Hey everyone! There's something I missed out in this video - The S5 has a recording limit of 30 mins when recording 10bit 4K, however there's no record limit when recording 10bit 4K in the S1. Please bear in mind that this is only for 24/25/30p though.... Both camera's have a 30 min record limit in 4K 50/60p Hope this clarifies things!
Yes and you also missed a few other stuff. I too am deciding between the two so I have done some of my research. So if you wanna do more run and gun handheld shooting the s1 has better stabilization than the s5. You did just mention the no recording limit on the s1 that the s5 doesn't have. Besides the difference in flip screen its objective and I think both implementation are good. The s5 flip screen does have a disadvantage when it comes to connectivity as the screen is then obstructed when u have a Mic and headphone plugged in the socket where the s1 doesn't have that problem. To the credit of the s5 which is what's bizarre to me, is the s5 is a lower end camera but comes with v-log pre-installed, whilst the s1 you still need to pay for the upgrade. That's one of the main differences for me where the s5 wins especially when you factor in pricing.
For micro-hdmi cameras, get a SmallRig Ultra Slim 4K HDMI Adapter Cable (D to A) 3021. You screw the fullsize HDMI plug onto your cage and then there are no forces on the hdmi d plug.
I think your reviews are very thoughtful and intelligent. I have the S5 and would love the S1R for its viewfinder and 47.3MP, but I have no issues with the S5 viewfinder, and it's great for manual focus. And the 24MP is plenty enough for my actual needs. Btw, while I bought the S5 for it's fully articulated LCD screen for driver's licence selfie, I find the screen gets in the way when all I want to do is take a low shot with the camera held both hands down low. A simple tilt screen is easier to us. I should mention I'm 84 and some body movements are not possible for me which are easy for you who are young, so far.
I have an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II. It too has a flippy screen, and I do sometimes put the body on the ground. The flippy screen on that's fine. I haven't done the same with my G9 (yet). I'm only 74, mostly OK earlier in the day.
I'm just 55.. but also have the S5 and e-m1ii. The s5 has become a favorite, esp as I do a nightly photo walk after work when light level drop, the sensor and ibis work great. I'm used to pentax gear esp the k1 do don't mind bigger sized bodies as I prefer ergonomics over slightly smaller. But like the op I'm interested in the s1r but I don't want to have to support the qcd cards just for that one camera. Maybe I just have to wait for an s2r version that takes both qcd and cf type b ...
@@Tomoldchannel yep, I got the s1 and vlog upgrade for same price as the S5, maybe even a tad cheaper. S1 is the slightly better camera imo, just for the build quality, full hdmi and 6K, better evf and screen. I was going for the S5 originally.. I like the flip screen and the dual SD slot, but meh.
If anyone cares, from a long time user: The EVF turned out to be a big deal which I did not expect in the beginning, which is why I now own both S1 and S5. If you're into video and use manual lenses and/or make use of the excellent adaptibility of vintage and manual lenses like M-mount lenses - you WILL want the better EVF. The same is also true if your eyesight isn't 100% anymore. Both screens are super fast and lag-free, but with the focus peaking being so-so on the S5, the EVFs resolution is not enough for critical focus with manual lenses or makes it a LOT more tricky to be spot on. Also, if you do not film/shoot yourself all the time or spend most of the time taking pictures in the most extreme poses - the screen of the S1 turned out to be much more ergonomic for me after all (esp. with cables running out of the left side of the camera).
S1 - with firmware 2.0 (and now 2.1) - 90% of the features and capabilities of an S1H at a substantially lower price. All the S series cameras have superb image quality.
Thanks for your well done Video! Weight, Flippy Screen and 2 SD card slots might be preferrable for many users. One downside of the S%, that the excellent 24-105 f4 is the kit lens for the S1 only. If you want a 1 lens kit to start with I prefer the S1 with said lens. The tank like built quality plus the full size HDMI is very appealing. This is a camera that lasts. Flippy screens are always delicate to handle. For criticalVideo focus an external monitor is anyway the way to go.
If the S5 and S1 are this powerful, I cant imagine the next models of this cameras. If they improve the autofocus and a next generation ibis , they will be MONSTERS
I would agree but there’s no incentive for LUMIX to push the limits. They have a user base that’s willing to wait so they’ll juice them for as long as they can with subpar features and incremental upgrades. Look at the GH5mkii and the supposed “second coming of Christ” camera, GH6. I want M43 to live but it’s on life support while they keep claiming “M43? Oh, everything’s fine”.
@@eduardocardona6608 True but prices can be competitive if there were more players in the market innovating. There's no incentive for that. I remember Nokia claiming that Apple will fail in the phone market because "you can't just walk into the phone market with no experience and be successful". This is where Nokia's market research killed them. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you with what's happening now, but if a big company that was bored decided to buy say, Blackmagic Designs or Lumix's imaging division (which makes jack for money and doesn't even show up on the yearly report. It's lumped into the "other" revenue slice beside home appliances slice in the pie), lose a bunch of money at the start only to come through with a camera breakthrough, that would be great. Unfortunately, that breakthrough would only be worth it if it were mainstream. And the mainstream want better phone cameras, not interchangeable lens mirrorless. Your statement about the art proves this. It doesn't matter about the gear. It matters what's made WITH the gear.
@@elephantgrass631 If you think Panasonic tries to milk their customers what about Sony? The "cheapest" camera with 10bit recording costs 2800€ and thats a shame
@@Milan-cf1xe Sure, Sony. Add them to the list. These are all companies that are competing for a bigger slice of a quickly shrinking pie. Innovate, or enjoy a wide piece of a small pie that's only getting smaller.
We just got ours at work two days ago. Just started testing it out and I'm already exited to be working with this camera. We got it with the Panasonic 24-70 2.8, and the quality is just great.
That’s the main reason why I own an S1. I can focus my large collection of manual focus lenses with ease using it’s amazing EVF. Plus, I get highly effective IBIS too. If only it wasn’t so heavy.
Thanks for these videos. I realize I'm late to the S5 / S1 debate but really wasn't paying that much attention to either until the GH6 was released and I went down the rabbit hole of - do I upgrade my GH5? GH6 vs GH5 comparison videos got me into GH6 vs S5 and I started paying more attention to the new full frame options that weren't the S1H, and that I could afford. Somewhere along the way I bought a Ninja V thinking it would at least get me 10-bit 4K60p for my GH5. Maybe I was still ok in MFT land. Nope. I realized what the Ninja V can do with the full frame cameras and it's back to camera-envy time. At any rate, I just shipped off my GH5, my BMPCC4K and a bunch of glass and adapters for an S5 and the Panasonic f/4 24-105 to try out the ecosystem. I probably found your channel, consumed most, if not all, of your videos within a very short period of time, and they were a big help understanding the developing full frame landscape, the limitations and best practices for AF, and understanding most sides of most debates just a little bit better. And the reality is: I'm still not sure if I want to swap my order last minute for the S1 just because of the full size HDMI. Had a GH4 and was thrilled to step up to full size HDMI with the GH5. Nothing a cage and clamp can't solve though. 90% sticking with the S5. Don't care that much about the record limits and the EVF as a more video-centric shooter with a Ninja V.
Great review and I'm pleased you endorse the S5 because I really like it for the qualities you highlighted. Got one coming in the post soon hence my bias 😂.
Thanks for the video, Josh. One other thought is that the S5 has a 30-minute time limit on some of the internal recording modes (I think it's the 4K 10-bit modes), while the S1 doesn't. I guess that is the main reason I keep my S1 instead of trading it for a (second) S5, in case I want to record an interview or a wedding ceremony and I expect it is going to go longer than 30 minutes. On the other hand, kind of bummed the internal 6K of the S1 is only 8-bit and has a 15-minute limit, because I would have liked to use the 6K for re-framing those (long) interviews and ceremonies.
Hey! So if you want to record longer than 30 mins with the S5 you totally can, but only in 8bit. Personally I never shoot longer than 10 mins at a time so for me it's never been an issue, however I can understand where you're coming from!
Your videos always make me love my S5 even more! Thank you! :) Sometimes tempted by the S1R, but the S5 is soo good and so sharp with the two sigma lenses I have (35 and 85 1.4 dg dns), I have a hard time justifying it. Very happy S5 shooter here too!
Thanks Joe! Yeah it’s already amazing, I’d only recommend a higher resolution camera if your work demands the highest level of detail possible. Otherwise, I’d say that 24mp is a sweet spot for resolution and lowlight performance :)
Full HDMI port is the biggest argument for S1, if you use external recorder/monitor. The micro HDMI port of the S5 will break, it is just a matter of time. With full size HDMI the S5 would be perfect.
Yeah I agree with you here to be honest. I use external monitors all day every day with the micro HDMI port and so far it's handling it just fine. But all it takes is one knock and then it's an expensive bill to get the Micro HDMI port fixed or replaced. Honestly though, we can't complain too much since the form factor of the S5 is so much smaller and it's a lot better for my work. Let's just hope the micro hdmi holds up!
Hi Hugh, thanks for watching mate! The S1's IBIS is moderately superior, but I don't think that comes down to specs... I think it comes down more so to the added weight of the camera. Even if the spec sheets say it has an extra 1/2-1stop of IBIS (I'm unsure at this point because it's different everywhere you look), I think that makes less of a difference than the added weight does for handheld shooting. The S5 has marginally better AF i'd say, but only in video. the difference isn't too major though when you've set up the AF settings properly for the situation you're shooting in, and, in my testing, I've got very similar results!
Got the S5 for 1200£ with the kit 20-60mm included. The S1 is 2k right now so for me with this deal the S5 was a no brainer. I'd had preferred a full size HDMI on the S1, but with a cage and a hdmi clamp I've secured the cable on the port. Also I really don't like the the top LCD on the S1, looks very old in terms of aesthetic.
good review but you should mention the paid vlog update for the s1. i think its already in the s5 but you need to purchase for the s1 to have the best video features.
Might be the biggest deciding factor! I have had the S1 since launch, and plan on adding a second body. The limited recording time means the S5 can't be an unmanned B cam for interviews or concert shooting. I really love the small form factor, but the 30 minute limits in 10 bit modes are a non-starter. Not to mention, the S1 can be found for a steal on eBay these days.
@@nickharris5231 Just to be fair, if you use a ninja V with the S5, then the recording time is unlimited. (up to the capacity of the SSD drive, of course.)
@@KeithSklower of course, but that's a significant extra expense, especially considering batteries and SSD's, not to mention having to ensure those batteries are charged, the extra weight in the bag, and having to rig it all up. I prefer gear where I have the option to keep it stripped down. Hell, I spent nearly $30,000 on a Sony F3 kit when it was brand new, with a KiPro Mini recorder and Anton Bauer Gold mount plate that mounted neatly behind the camera on rails, (this was all to get 1080p prores 10 bit 4:2:2,mind you) and I still hated how bulky/unwieldy it all got. The appeal of these cameras (for me) is the 4K 10 bit 4:2:2 internal recording, combined with the IBIS. Simple, compact, and run and gun right out of the bag. I have the option spray it all down with extra gack, but I'm not forced to if I don't need it.
Great video! Help me make my choice, going with S5 ii. I saw an S1H used but for my application I think the S5 II. Feel better about it after your video. Thanks for the work!
Good job. Straight to the point! Please, if you can display what type of handle you use, attached to the cage, also what external monitor you use. Thank you!

I have owned Canon cameras with battery grips. The battery grips hold two batteries external to the camera body. Those batteries are held in a cartridge which is easy to remove and replace. I would like to see a similar implementation for memory cartridges, a field-replaceable cartridge system. I might be offered one or two CFExoress cards, one or two SDXC cards with the obvious one of each. I don't think I need the speed of CFExpress, but having two monster SDXC cards would be cool. Conceivably, the cameras could have permanent SSD storage, 64 or 128 GB perhaps, to serve as a buffer while data are transferred to removeable memory cards. The SSD should offer all the speed (and more) of CFExpress, while allowing the use of lower spec SDXC cards.
Comparing *v60* card and XQD is like compare Toyota Corolla and Lamborgini. Compare 300mb/s WRITE like "Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC UHS-II" and CF-Express B (XQD does not make sense now, when you can use CFE) - CFE will be cost the same, but waaaaaaay faster. For photo it is like unlimited buffer in burst mode. Regarding 5K etc on S1, it is available only after +200 bucks software update.
I agree - it is an unfair comparison.... However it's something that is often compared quite a lot and some people like having inexpensive media storage! I can definitely see the pro's and cons to both!
@@JoshCameron "some people like having inexpensive media storage" they want a lot of features like dual slots, and this and that... literally wanted too much. *The same people* in case of 2xSD will complain that "why it is so slow SD" :) At least it has 1 normal SD card and even UHS-I works very well. So. there is no the *second* cheap card option. In general do think S1 upgrade code is worth 200 bucks to buy?
Thanks for making such a direct video about all these topics you’re one of the few videos I didn’t have to keep skipping +20 sec bc other ppl don’t get to the point. Anyway, how do you feel about the flip screen on the S5 vs tilt on S1. My decision is basically down to this Bc all the video specs I care about now seem to be pretty matched on both cameras. I do 80% photo 20% video. I feel like I’m going to get so annoyed having to flip out and over just to look down vs the tilt screen I can just pop out quick and look down. Do ppl just get used to the flippy screen after awhile being off axis? I personally think the S5 is a tad too small but it can always be built up with grips etc so it comes down to that damn screen decision for me 😩
Hey Joe, thanks for watching and thank you for your kind words! So, as you heard in this video, I shoot both stills and video (and at very equal amounts too - 50/50 i'd say). The flip screen has never been an issue for me for stills. It allows you to be a lot more flexible when shooting at different heights and angles, and can also be used in the same conventional ways as the standard tilt screen. Granted, you may have to use it off to the side for some angles, but this really hasn't bothered me at all! Hope this helps :)
Finally thanks I finally will be now able to make the decision the only thing that had been bugging me was that hdmi port for the S5 and the Vlog update that I need to buy for S1 also is there the linear focusing option in the S1 that is what is bugging me the most
This video has come at the absolute PERFECT time for me! I literally just ordered the S5 a couple of hours ago after A LOT of research between the two. Thanks for the great video Josh! Looking forward to more!
Josh, thanks for your presentation--clear and concise, and I appreciate the time stamps, as I only do video. You are right about the EVFs. On paper it looks like the S1 takes the prize, but in reality the EVF of the S5 seems, well, not that bad. You can certainly see well enough for most of what you do. Going on regarding the EVF, there are some significant differences a young guy like you may not take note of. The S1 diopter falls well short of +4.0. That's a real problem for someone like me, who hates to shoot with my glasses and MUST have the +4.0 diopter in order to see focus. To solve the problem I had to buy the top quality S1/S1H rubber eye cup and place a +2 diopter over it with some Sugru---THEN the EVF looked great. Very remiss of Panasonic to make an expensive camera and short customers on the Diopter adjustment. ....but there's more. The Peaking feature on the S1 is TERRIBLE. It seems to work fine when setting focus (I'm primarily a manual focus shooter). But the minute you hit record the peaking shockingly diminishes---in some profiles it seems hardly viewable---to the point of vanishing. BIG problem if you want to track a subject with manual focus. The sum force of the diopter issue and the horrific focus peaking were deal breakers for me. The S1H was great...but the menus were FAR more than I needed, and there was so much I did not use that got in the way of finding what you actually needed I sold the S1H...sad to say. Plus, it was too heavy, and would wear me out in the Texas summer. The S5 strikes a wonderful happy medium, with good (NOT great) peaking, an adequate EVF with sufficient diopter strength---so for me, it's a keeper---yet I have not found any of the full frame cameras with such an elegant image and colors as what I get from the GH5S---what a great camera! Image and colors out of the camera that exceeds what I can get from the Canon cameras. Panasonic great company. But, perhaps you can answer one question for me: did Panasonic FIX the terrible peaking on the S1 with the updates? Finally, I want to say to you I'm NOT the Lone Ranger. There are lots of run and gun shooters who prefer to shoot manual focus and reply on focus assist tools like punch in and peaking. Let me encourage you to include information that would be helpful to them in your subsequent videos. I think the big companies don't really want that. They want you to spend a fortune on their ULTRA expensive lenses---most of which are focus by wire and, by definition, useless for video. I actually don't own a native Panasonic full frame lens. For me creative video is crippled by enslavement to AF systems. Results are almost always more "cinematic" and creative when you pull focus manually. Sorry this is so long. Thanks for wading through it and for a good, clear presentation.
Hello William, thank you for your lovely comment and for taking the time to watch my video! The EVF thing I haven't noticed at all actually, but that's largely due to the fact that I don't need to adjust it much at all and it's already pretty clear for me straight out of the box. I can see what you're saying though and that must be so frustrating! The focus peaking on both the S1 and the S5 is a little weaker than I'd like to be honest, even with the update. I normally use an external monitor and the peaking options are a lot better for me and my workflow. I have seen the same phenomenon where the peaking seems to diminish massively once you press record... very strange!
The master pedestal level is specifically for broadcasting use. Of course, you can get creative with it. I did that a lot on the Gh4! But it is at least by design, very much a broadcasting feature to sync multiple cameras in live environments for those wondering. Nerdy talk aside, thank you whole heartedly for this video. This cam is 1900 euros now including the 16-20mm and 50mm f/1.8. This helped me by a lot with deciding to pull the trigger. Such a good deal!
Excellant video. Just purchased the S5 myself, looks amazing. A question, can you clean the sensor with a sensor swab and eclipse fluid and also should i lock the sensor Ibis and if so , how do i lock it? Thanks :)
The live crop is just 20 or 30 second clips. You can’t set it to just go back and forth for an extended time like you would with a slider (at lest as far as I know). You would be better off just recording a static shot and adding those slider effects in post I think.
Hey Josh, thanks for all the info, wow you packed a lot in! I had to take speed to keep up ;-) I see elsewhere in the comments some concern about the micro HDMI port being vulnerable to damage. Do you think a cable clamp would help? Also, at 11:00 - that's a bonkers rig! I have the Tascam DR 70D which I fix under my camera where it's easier to see the controls and display and it doesn't become a destabilising side-weight. I'd consider the Panasonic XLR attachment thingy (very nifty), but then if I ever switch away from Panasonic, it wouldn't work with anything else plus I like that the Tascam can run a parallel track at a lower volume to give me a safety track should the main audio clip out unexpectedly. You've put my mind at rest about a few things. I was looking at the Canon offerings, but they're either a bit meh, or hopelessly expensive for people who need two bodies (preferably matched). I think the S5 will be my first non-Canon work camera since the mid 1990s!
Hahaha! Yeah I need to slow down sometimes hahaha! Yes defo, a cable clamp will alleviate that issues nicely since it'll make the cable more secure in place. I actually never use my camera like that haha - that rig was just for illustration! ;D I think you'll be a very happy camper with the S5. You get a lot for your money and it's built to last!
@@JoshCameron Haha well I've calmed down now and my head has stopped spinning :D I'm on the cusp of buying two S5 bodies. However, I'll keep a couple of Canon lenses to use with my EOS 1N film camera. Now THAT'S a camera built to last! Keep up the good work. I hope shooting work is picking up for you too.
Bought S5 after S1, particularly with this nice review, *and totally disagree with you.* ("I would go with S5 over S1"). Image quality might be the same, BUT...... and this is very huge "but" - S5 is like a toy and build construction is MUCH cheaper in quality. Viewfinder as well is not comparable to S1, at all. I knew that it's lower res, but actual qulity difference is drastic. I would defenetelly and absolutely go with S1 instead of S5.... Difference in the build quality is dramatic. It's like another brand and another level of camera. The only pros is turnable monitor.... Size is not much smaller as well, just about the same. So the only one single point to buy S5 over S1 if you very limited in budget, but even if this case I would borrow the rest and buy S1..... So, review is kind of misleading a little bit.
I went for the S5 too over the S1, but I find the viewfinder hard to work with. Especially when you were glasses. It’s also so dark when you compare it to other camera’s.
Josh, I’ve just bought an S1 after selling my S5. I wanted unlimited 4k 10 but so had to. Just bought a used S1 and it’s just arrived. The d pad buttons are way harder to press than the S5 and also when you touch them they rattle a little. Is that normal? Also just taken the lens cap off to check the sensor and there is a few marks on the top left part. Is this the actual sensor or just a curtain that protects the sensor. If so then not too fussed. If it’s the sensor then it will go back. Cheers.
Is there any noticeable difference in sharpness between the two cameras with the same lens? Imaging-resource and dpreview studio samples show S1 significantly sharper than S5.
Nice and straight forward video, so internally apart from the 6k capability on the S1, the normal 4k quality would look the same between these 2 even in low light situation?
Really good comparison! I do love S5 but S1 is a real contender now, especially if you need a high end B-Cam. Do you get shutter angle and red frame when recording with this new S1 firmware update?
Hey Pav! Thanks mate, glad you liked this video. I can confirm that both shutter and angle and rec frame are present on the S1 now which is AWESOME. It actually feels very similar to the S5 in terms of the features it has for video now. Albeit there's a select few that are still missing, but it's such a step up from what it used to be!
Hi Josh, thank you for very informative videos! I become more fan of Lumix because of yor content. Do you know if its possible to use external power bank connected to usb ports on S5 and S1 to be powered while prolong filming? Regards
Hi Dmitri, thanks so much for the kind words! Really appreciate it! So it's not possible to power the camera via USB-C while the camera is on... You'll be able to trickle charge, but that's not the same as actually powering or charging the camera. The camera charges via USB-C when it's switched off, however. I will be making a video on externally powering the S5 very soon, so keep an eye out for it!
@@JoshCameron Thank you Josh for swift reply, some of your comments and advises on camera operations/use and setups are much better to digest and understand than official Panasonic tutorials for me anyway! Definitely be eyeing up new ones, Regards
Josh, I appreciate your content! How big of a deal is the S1’s weight for fatigue? Among my other work, I want to be able to carry around the camera me in my back pack throughout a day and shoot things as I feel inspired. I slightly prefer the S1 but it’s coming down to that one question of weight for me.
@@Directorvhim it’s been awesome! The autofocus has been great in landscape and street photography once I got more familiar with the system. Figuring out the best modes for each scenario was really helpful. It works for portraits just fine but I haven’t had enough time in those situations to dial in the settings and learn what modes to use. The eye is blurry more often than I’d like, but I know others who have tons of success in those scenarios, it seems.
I use MF most of the time, Mark! Just stay at the same distance away from the subject, or if I do need to push in/out then I’ll pull focus manually 👍🏻 Thanks for watching mate!
Awesome explanation, btw is it true that variable frame rate (slow motion) on the S1 is still manual focus compaerd to the s5 which is already have autofocus for slowmo
Thanks mate!!! Great video. Just a couple of questions....Am I correct in thinking the S5 can only continually record in 4K 8bit? The S5 only has the red recording square on the monitor whilst recording and in regards to how the camera records footage to Media, does it break the footage into 4gb chunks similar to the GH4??
Hey James! Glad you liked the video - yeah sure would love to answer these questions: Yes, you'd be right in saying that you can only record 8bit 4K for over 30 mins. The red square is an option you can set in the menu and it'll only appear when you're recording as a bigger/better way to ensure the user that. it is indeed in rec mode. I haven't had the S5 break the footage into 4gb chunks... It all records as one file! Hope this helps buddy!
I can't believe that you dont find using the S5 viewfinder vs the S1 a bid deal. The viewfinder in the S5 is awful and impossible to nail focus when shooting video. I've updated from the GH5 to the S5 recently, and although physically they look quite alike the Gh5 feels so much nicer and better ergonomically when working with it. With the S5 I found myself changing the shooter speed and pressing buttons by mistake all the time. The grip doesn't feel as good as the gh5. I'm regretting not have been able to test the S1, It seems to fix all problems I found with the S5.
Hello, nice video! In your opinion, after the firmware update, do the cameras have same autofocus? I ask more from photography point of view, both afs and afc with face and eye detection. Thanks
I’ve used both extensively for client work on a photography basis and honestly, they’re pretty similar in terms of photography AF. The newest firmware updates to the AF has made the S1 better than it was before from my understanding, and I’d say they’re pretty similar now. Hope this helps!
I watched the whole video. I think you missed the recording limit part. I know it is kind complicated. In certain mode, you can record unlimited in certain mode you can record up to 30 mins and in certain mode I think only 15 mins. But I know s5 is inferior to s1 regarding record limit.
@@JoshCameron Thanks for the quick reply. I hesitate a bit which cameras to buy :). Actually, it will be equipment for my daughter who works with me, she currently has 2xGH5 and a whole set of Cine SLR Magic lenses. By weight it comes out that the S5 is better, but I do not know if I will buy the S1H and also the S5. I am an old Canon user :), but I also like the picture from Panasonic.
Have you noticed any evf lag and rear display lag on the S5 I'm low light or shooting at night . The lag is so bad that the camera is pretty much unusable at night .
@@JoshCameron Thanks for the information. And with 6K internal recording, which is the right memory card for S1? That should be a XQD or Sd Card U3 is just fine? Thanks again! (I already have a S5 and want to try some cool features that only have in the S1)
Josh thank you so much for the video!! Probably I also gonna choose the S5, it is lighter, newer body and ,i know it's not that impartant but, for the card slots. I would rather spend the money on lenses and not on memory cards! hahah
Hey mate! You're welcome, really happy you could get some value from it. The S5 is a superb choice! Haha, I feel you on that one ;D If you want my recommendation for the first lens to get for it, it'd be the 24-105 F4. Awesome lens for the money and it's very versatile!
Got myself the s5, arrived yesterday, hope we'll see some firmware magic like 6k internal (if you happen to have the info, please tell me i have 30 days to send it back ^^)
Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about any future plans to roll out the internal 6K to the S5.... sorry buddy! BUT , don’t send the S5 back. Remember it’s still a very new body that’s less than a year old, and if Panasonic are willing to give such a massive update to their oldest FF camera, then who knows what they’ll do with the S5 in the future !
@@JoshCameron I was kidding, the body size and weight are great ! If i really need 6k i'll buy into the Ninja V. It just feels unnatural to me to get a video oriented camera >
@@Robin.F96 You're like me as well - I shoot a lot of photo too.... And where the S5 is definitely more video centric, it has all the features and more for photogs as well!
I got an s5 and use your AF recommended settings mixed with pav saying to use 1area human detection. So far I’m happy! Does the s1 perform the same with AF or is the s5 better because it’s newer?
Hey everyone! There's something I missed out in this video - The S5 has a recording limit of 30 mins when recording 10bit 4K, however there's no record limit when recording 10bit 4K in the S1. Please bear in mind that this is only for 24/25/30p though.... Both camera's have a 30 min record limit in 4K 50/60p
Hope this clarifies things!
Video recording battery life not mentioned.how much difference is there and which is has better battery life for video.
@@sylvesterpeterrameau702 Everything you've said here is correct - and should've been stuff I touched upon on this video. Sorry about that !
@@cdprasad4u The Shot rating can also be comparable to the video recording usage in my testing :)
Wow! Recording limits! What a pain! I have two GH5’s. This is an important step back!
Maybe I just have to wait for an s2r version that takes both qcd and cf type b ...
with recent firmware update.. S1 is clear winner. Admit it Josh 😏😏🤣❤️
Hahahaha! For many things yes... But I would still grab my S5 over the S1 since it has a better form factor for me :D
I had a s1 in hands recently and it is really heavy though. But on the second hand market they are at the same price
what happened in the firmware?
@@Tomoldchannel yep, I got the s1 and vlog upgrade for same price as the S5, maybe even a tad cheaper. S1 is the slightly better camera imo, just for the build quality, full hdmi and 6K, better evf and screen. I was going for the S5 originally.. I like the flip screen and the dual SD slot, but meh.
@@Tomoldchannel how much does it cost you now on the secondary market?
Thank you. I think I will go for the S1. 😉
S1 - with firmware 2.0 (and now 2.1) - 90% of the features and capabilities of an S1H at a substantially lower price. All the S series cameras have superb image quality.
Totally agree, Nick - Panasonic have done a great job :)
V2.2 in the meantime ...
They're both awesome cameras and have their pro's comparatively .... I'd take both if I could ;)
If the S5 and S1 are this powerful, I cant imagine the next models of this cameras. If they improve the autofocus and a next generation ibis , they will be MONSTERS
Let's see what the future holds!
I just ordered my S5 and can’t wait!!
We just got ours at work two days ago. Just started testing it out and I'm already exited to be working with this camera. We got it with the Panasonic 24-70 2.8, and the quality is just great.
Wahey! Exciting times ahead! You’re gonna love it!
I find the S1 EVF very helpful for manual focus photography, especially when shooting with wider apertures.
I agree, I picked up an S1H to test the EVF, same as S1 and it blew me away,
Great point! The higher res and bigger size is defo helpful if you do manual focus in photography!
That’s the main reason why I own an S1. I can focus my large collection of manual focus lenses with ease using it’s amazing EVF. Plus, I get highly effective IBIS too. If only it wasn’t so heavy.
@@Muchtoobizy, that's a fair point, wonder when the GH6 will come out with new EVF technology.
Sold S5 due to terrible EVF
You made me feel better about my S5. Love it overall a small but powerful camera that rivals most cinema cameras!
Hey! haha happy to help! It's a fantastic little camera :)
Don't care that much about the record limits and the EVF as a more video-centric shooter with a Ninja V.
for stills and flash photos - the 1/320 sync speed on the S1 is a nice upgrade
You can buy a coldshoe with external flash inputs as I did for my two S5.s. Works well.
Both the Panasonic S5 and Panasonic S1 are on my shopping list
@@JoshCameron S1 video 4K 10bit no limit ?
Your videos always make me love my S5 even more! Thank you! :) Sometimes tempted by the S1R, but the S5 is soo good and so sharp with the two sigma lenses I have (35 and 85 1.4 dg dns), I have a hard time justifying it. Very happy S5 shooter here too!
Thanks Joe! Yeah it’s already amazing, I’d only recommend a higher resolution camera if your work demands the highest level of detail possible. Otherwise, I’d say that 24mp is a sweet spot for resolution and lowlight performance :)
So glad you made this video. I've been trying to decide which one to get.
It's my pleasure! Makes it worthwhile if I can help at least one person make an informed decision. Do you have a better idea of what to pick now?
@@JoshCameron I was already leaning towards the S1.
Nice one Josh, great comparison. Maybe the S1 has better IBIS and the S5 has better autofocus?
S1 is a special camera. My go to
good review but you should mention the paid vlog update for the s1. i think its already in the s5 but you need to purchase for the s1 to have the best video features.
Noted - I should’ve mentioned this! Thanks for watching mate!
@@nickharris5231 i am thinking the same but leave the s1 unmanned and have something lighter for gimbal. maybe the s5 but the af ...
Great round up , very helpful , thanks .

Well done on all those numbers! 👏👏👏👏
Finally thanks I finally will be now able to make the decision the only thing that had been bugging me was that hdmi port for the S5 and the Vlog update that I need to buy for S1 also is there the linear focusing option in the S1 that is what is bugging me the most
The S1 does have linear focus settings.
This video has come at the absolute PERFECT time for me! I literally just ordered the S5 a couple of hours ago after A LOT of research between the two. Thanks for the great video Josh! Looking forward to more!
Hey buddy! Thank you so much, glad you found this video insightful and I hope it’s given you more confidence in your purchase :D
Thanks a lot. Very nice comparison video
OMG what a nice comparison.
Excellent review/comparison.
Josh Cameron yea. That doesn’t happen on the GH5 or 5S. What a strange crippling.
I recommend buying both.
Me too!
That was really interesting and helpful. Thank you.
Thank you very much! Glad you found it helpful :)
BRAVO ! I would say absolutely same , U just forgot to say the limit of time recording in 10 bit of S5 :) , ...unless I missed it
I've pinned this as the top comment on this video! Thanks for pointing this out!
That's an amazing deal! defo worth pulling the trigger on! Hope you enjoy it!

Excellant video. Just purchased the S5 myself, looks amazing. A question, can you clean the sensor with a sensor swab and eclipse fluid and also should i lock the sensor Ibis and if so , how do i lock it? Thanks :)
Do you think you could use the live cropping as a replacement for a slider in interviews? Hmm????
I’d say you definitely could....
I had to take speed to keep up ;-)
I see elsewhere in the comments some concern about the micro HDMI port being vulnerable to damage.
I actually never use my camera like that haha - that rig was just for illustration! ;D
I think you'll be a very happy camper with the S5. You get a lot for your money and it's built to last!
@@JoshCameron Haha well I've calmed down now and my head has stopped spinning :D
I'm on the cusp of buying two S5 bodies. However, I'll keep a couple of Canon lenses to use with my EOS 1N film camera. Now THAT'S a camera built to last!
Keep up the good work. I hope shooting work is picking up for you too.
Master Pedestal Level is in the GH4 as well.
Ah my mistake!
I have the S5 and I got the sr1 and you can feel the difference in every way. I’m so happy with my sr1 now.
When do you think the EVA2 will come out? That's the only reason I'm buying into the L mount system, lol
Thank you for your video. You very help me
Thanks for watching - glad I could help!
Cheers.
I think you should do a video about the photography side in the S5 ... MOst people ignore that...

Is there any noticeable difference in sharpness between the two cameras with the same lens? Imaging-resource and dpreview studio samples show S1 significantly sharper than S5.
I haven't noticed any differences in sharpness between the two cameras... Very strange!
Nice and straight forward video, so internally apart from the 6k capability on the S1, the normal 4k quality would look the same between these 2 even in low light situation?
I'd say so yes. They're built off of the same sensor and both have the same dual native ISO capabilities!
@@JoshCameron I think I want it 😉
Hi Josh, thank you for very informative videos!
What about S1 vs S1R for videomaking? Wich one should get?
sooo good video!!! true, honest, simple... the best!!!
Thank you! Really happy it came across that way. Really appreciate the support buddy - have an awesome evening :D
make a vid for how shot cinematic or how you shot cinematic with S5. thanks
Approx 300g difference in back pack, not noticeable unless in hand
@@clearlyconfused9194 thanks for the info! I ended up getting the S1. It’s a big boy but I love it!
@@justinmayfield6579 how is the camera treating you and how's the Autofocus?
@@Directorvhim it’s been awesome! The autofocus has been great in landscape and street photography once I got more familiar with the system. Figuring out the best modes for each scenario was really helpful. It works for portraits just fine but I haven’t had enough time in those situations to dial in the settings and learn what modes to use. The eye is blurry more often than I’d like, but I know others who have tons of success in those scenarios, it seems.
This will help a lot of people out! I’d say get both 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Hahaha not everyone is baller like you 😉🤪
Can u tell us about lens choice ?
I hace EF lens ( Canon + Samyung ) , How about your experience in using ef lens on S5
Hi Ahmad, I plan on making video about this topic very soon, I'd like to show what using adapted glass is like on the S5 :)
6:50 josh you say you do a lot of gimbal work - do you preset your AF and keep a consistent distance.
I use MF most of the time, Mark! Just stay at the same distance away from the subject, or if I do need to push in/out then I’ll pull focus manually 👍🏻
Thanks for watching mate!
@@JoshCameron thanks Josh - keep up the good work
@@markshirley01 Cheers Mark!
Awesome explanation, btw is it true that variable frame rate (slow motion) on the S1 is still manual focus compaerd to the s5 which is already have autofocus for slowmo
It all depends on the frame rate you choose... Anything above 120p on the S5 is Manual focus only (so 150 and 180)!
Hey James! Glad you liked the video - yeah sure would love to answer these questions:
Yes, you'd be right in saying that you can only record 8bit 4K for over 30 mins.
The red square is an option you can set in the menu and it'll only appear when you're recording as a bigger/better way to ensure the user that. it is indeed in rec mode.
I haven't had the S5 break the footage into 4gb chunks... It all records as one file!
Hope this helps buddy!
@@JoshCameron So to clarify you can set the red square option for both the S1 and S5?
@@JoshCameron Or just the S5?
@@jamomorrissey Yes you can set it for both! Which is really handy :D
@@JoshCameron Awesome!! Thanks mate. Keep up the great work. Loving your content.
Ah really? For me it's always been fine. Have you changed your diopter to suit your eyes?
@@JoshCameron yes, the magnification is poor, and you can see the pixels on the viewfinder.
Can you recommend a good upgrade from the 20-60mm S5 kit lens that gives a bit more range? Cheers 😉
24-105 F4 :D
@@JoshCameron thanks dude 😉
Hi, you say that the native ISO. is for Vlog, is diferent for Natural and the other profiles? I just dont use vlog.
@@JoshCameron Thanks! For sure it helps! Both are similar also in afc eye/face detection?
Yep! Even in those modes :)
Live Cropping = Ken Burns Effect?
Sort of, but better ;D
I watched the whole video. I think you missed the recording limit part.
I know it is kind complicated. In certain mode, you can record unlimited in certain mode you can record up to 30 mins and in certain mode I think only 15 mins.
But I know s5 is inferior to s1 regarding record limit.
Hey Kai thanks for watching - yes I did actually miss this out completely! I'll make a pinned comment about it.
Thank you!
Superb
Thank you!
Do you have Lumix S1 you wan to dispose?
Both are great camera's
I agree! You'd be set with either of them :)
Very nice movie :) Please tell me if both cameras have a synchro scan function to compensate for flickering lighting?
Hey Michal! Thank you for the kind words - yes both cameras have something called "flicker decrease" that essentially does as you described :)
@@michalmacpro dont buy the s1h now, s1 is almost the same. maybe wait and hope for the successor with a better af
Only s1 has synchro scan as per my knowledge and that’s why I chose it over S5.
Josh when u publish the review 24 70 ... ???? 😇🙏
Have you noticed any evf lag and rear display lag on the S5 I'm low light or shooting at night . The lag is so bad that the camera is pretty much unusable at night .
Thank you for such a detail video. Does the Lumix S1 change to crop area for 4k50/60fps as same as S5?
Hey Kien! Thanks for watching! Yes it does crop in at 4k 50/60p :)
@@JoshCameron Thanks for the information. And with 6K internal recording, which is the right memory card for S1? That should be a XQD or Sd Card U3 is just fine?
Thanks again! (I already have a S5 and want to try some cool features that only have in the S1)
Which one of them has the best image stabilization?
Hmmm this boy will go for the S5
Josh thank you so much for the video!! Probably I also gonna choose the S5, it is lighter, newer body and ,i know it's not that impartant but, for the card slots.
I would rather spend the money on lenses and not on memory cards! hahah
Hey mate! You're welcome, really happy you could get some value from it. The S5 is a superb choice! Haha, I feel you on that one ;D If you want my recommendation for the first lens to get for it, it'd be the 24-105 F4. Awesome lens for the money and it's very versatile!
@@JoshCameron totally agree with you! 24-105 f4 and then all Sigma glass! hahah.
Awesome job on the videos Josh! Keep up!!
@@tasos_enis just got the s5 hehe 😁
With the Ninja V to the S5 there is no limit time with 4 k or what ?
I believe that’s the case. You should be able to record for as long as you have storage with the Ninja V 🙌🏼
Hey, I was watching your video and I noticed I don’t have master pedestal or SS/gain operation on my s5. Did I get a fake camera?
Just copped a S5, just watching a bunch of S5 content.
Please enjoy the channel - if there's anything you'd like me to cover then just ask! :D
What lenses you using?
Just the 24-105 F4 :)
Got myself the s5, arrived yesterday, hope we'll see some firmware magic like 6k internal (if you happen to have the info, please tell me i have 30 days to send it back ^^)
Even if we get 10 mins of internal 6k, that'll be more than enough for me should I ever need to shoot 6k!
@@iandenoronha8782 me too, 5 minutes would be enough 😂 (actually the 6k photo mode can be used to that extent)
Is there still a crop with 4K 60p
Indeed there is :)
How to Change the brightness of EVF on S5?
Good information, slow down though my friend
Haha thanks mate! Will slow down next time ;)
S5 over heating problem man...
I've never had the S5 overheat on me....
Which one got better autofocus? Or are they both dookie
They're pretty similar to be honest! The S5 would probably have the slight edge though for video :)
HELP! Lol…does the S1 have the Luminance Spot Meter like the s5 and now GH6?
Hello any latency when using external monitors with the s5? Thanks.
Hi Charles, there may be a VERY slight amount of latency, but nothing that i've notice while shooting and definitely not anything to worry about :)
Do S1 has 4K 60 in crop mode like the one on S5?
Correct!
Do you use a specific HDMI to micro HDMI cable for the S5?
Hi Jack, nah I just use the ones that came with my external monitors :)
I got an s5 and use your AF recommended settings mixed with pav saying to use 1area human detection. So far I’m happy! Does the s1 perform the same with AF or is the s5 better because it’s newer?
Hold on, I was JUST watching the other guy in the video lol. Is that Russell Kent Nichols?
It is indeed haha!
Is this firmware available if I don't have a Vlog ?
How about video AF ability between s1 and s5 ?
They're running with the same AF algorithm now so they're pretty similar!
