My husband and I was scammed twice last year, totaling losses over $550k. It was a lengthy process involving federal intervention to get our money back. We need more people like Retrievebackteam taking a stand against these criminals. Much love and support from California.
There is immense pain in losing a large amount of money but to garner courage to speak about it says a lot about the person’s great character.
I got scammed out of my retirement money but I was new to it. thanks for sharing will definitely get in touch with them
Thanks for the Info. Got scammed this past week out of 2.25 Bitcoin
This was very nice of him to get out there and share his story.
i bet he lost millions
Yeah...most ppl wouldnt broadcast their stupidity like this
@@rondaallen7211he wouldn’t have kept millions in a regular bank account.
@@rondaallen7211 This is just one account that was hacked. He probably has several bank accounts.
A client of mine almost had $39,999 transferred out of his one account. Fortunately, the financial institution realized the transaction was suspect and automatically blocked it.
Yeah so nice to take time from ripping off housewives women for profit
It takes courage to talk publicly about one is scammed. Thank you Andy Cohen.
he is lying dude
Courage? 😂. Y'all be throwing out charged words for anything
@@derick3482Maybe you scammed Andy,thats how you know he’s lying!!👍😂😂
I always hang up and call my bank directly when I get an alert. Scammers are getting really good at it.
Good advice.
Thank you❣️ EXCELLENT advice!!!
I never pick up the phone to someone I don't know.
Such a good idea!! Hang up and call your bank directly.
But didn’t he just say they forward your calls to themselves when you try to call your bank ? I didn’t get that part. If u are supposed to call your banks number 🤷🏼♀️
Andy is a good human being for sharing this. Someone could find this embarrassing but it could happen to anybody.
hes so not a good HB. he's evil af haha
@@alikaatar8927hope you find happiness kiddo
No he is not
@@beafee725why do you say that?
He wasn’t sweating about the scam… he’s got millions of dollars….
One of the key things he said was don’t get caught up in the urgency. All scammers use urgency to their advantage. Whether they are trying to get your bank information or telling you you’ll miss out on this amazing investment opportunity. Try to walk away and take a breath or even run it by a friend to get their take because they won’t be as emotionally charged.
True. I think after having so many serious life-or-death experiences, I've become completely immune to time pressure. I never take calls, I always initiate contact when and if I want to. Another benefit is that people perceive me as not being needy, because I'm not.
Get a service like LifeLock so that you have some recourse outside of your bank.
A scammer called my mom and said they were Amazon saying, "a Mac book will be delivered to you in a half hour, did you make this purchase?" .... they tried to scare her into thinking she had a half hour to cancel. As if Amazon EVER calls you to see what you ordered or can tell you you're getting ANYTHING in 30 minutes. Lol😂 Thankfully she thought my dad ordered it and didn't care, and hung up... but I explained things to her bcz she doesn't really use Amazon much.
@@bbrands49 ...this is why I tell everyone: ACT LIKE YOU ARE A CELEB. People NEED you, not the other way around. On WHAT planet does it make sense that someone wants to give you a macbook, but they HAVE to give it to you asap? Unless it's a time-sensitive bomb, there's no reason someone NEEDS to pass off a laptop to you. USE LOGIC!!!!!! I feel like logic is on short supply these days. Skepticism is crucial.
One thing to keep in mind is that there are malicious people working in the real bank's call centers. They could be responsible for alerting the scammers when a person's card is reported missing/stolen... which initiates this scam process at just the right time. All they need is your email address which is often not considered private info, so it is often accessible to many levels of employees at these call centers.
Totally right it definitely is not a coincidence. This has happened to me with USPS
Didn't think of this. Thanks for the info!
I think you’re on to something. These scams could definitely be inside jobs. Especially when bank employees know all the details about your activity and balances.
Most of the disappearing money from people's accounts and them using the ATMs - are, most likely - done by people working in the bank. OR - they give the information to a friend - who learns how to be a SCAMMER. Can't believe the banks can't track his money - and others.
@@allthingsnu4673they are really "bank employees" through. Most big banks hire out third party call centers in India. These call centers are the scammers not the bank. If the banks only hired Americans in American call centers, you wouldn't have this problem.
Wow. I am so glad Andy is speaking about this and raising awareness. Just goes to show you that ANYONE can fall victim to scams and you ALWAYS need to be on alert
Thats how they get you. We all think we're too smart to fall for scams until your IT department sends phishing emails and half the compsny falls for it 😂
I am glad that he was bold enough to discuss this!
Me too❣️
yeah a lot of people would be embarassed
Sickening. Thank you for alerting us to this sort of scam.
Andy, I’m so sorry this happened to you. You’re a smart man, but these criminals were conniving on a whole ‘nother level.
He aint smart😂😂😂😂😂
‘not required
BEWARE!!! THESE HACKERS ARE GETTING MORE CLEVER!!!
Unfortunately, when you give them the information it's not hacking.
Thank you, Andy, for sharing this with us! This will help many.
Appreciate him sharing the story. If it saves one person, it’s worth it.
The details were helpful. Very elaborate scheme😢
Andy Cohen, you are awesome to use your platform to make awareness.
I’m not a fan of Andy Cohen, but really respect him for this, people should be alert of that kinda scams, especially elderly people
nobody cares if you're a fan or not.
I’m not a fan of fans
I perfer haters
Andy is sooo nice. There’s something wrong with you. Sorry to say.
Being a fan or not is such an ego-holic statement in a serious situation like this.
It’s seriously annoying how there’s so many scammers posing as usps, Amazon, your phone company. It’s totally out of control.
My boyfriend lost his ID, and the amount of bank accounts that these fraudsters were able to open up UNDER HIS NAME ONLINE was astounding. Why are people able to open up bank accounts online without being VERIFIED first!?
Exactly!!!
Not enough t protection for customers just want to make money that the bank job
It truly is unbelievable, yet these animals have found sophisticated ways to destroy people’s life.
Years ago my purse was stolen. This woman went to Best Buy and bought a computer using my credit card. When the cashier asked for the license she gave my license. The cashier saw that the two names matched but never bothered to check if the the picture on my license matched the person giving it to her.
Don't you need a social security number to open a bank account?
Him losing his debit card was not coincidence- these corporations have so many slimy employees who are connected with criminal gangs for a fee - disgusting
How great of him to share this with the world. Kudos! He’s a celebrity and celebrities are the worst at sharing anything negative in their lives, even if it’s something minor. Pretty much every single one of them puts up a front, to basically project the image that their lives are so perfect and without the struggles and troubles that everyone else on earth cannot escape. My impression of him has now completely changed.
It's also important to realize that ANYONE can fall for these scams. All it takes are the right circumstances, being in a poor state of mind, and something that looks convincing at face value to get caught up in one of these scams. Even scam-baiters like Jim Browning have fallen victim. Just be alert, take your time, and don't be bullied into making snap decisions. And if you're ever not sure if something is a scam, ask your bank or ask a trusted friend.
Thanks for sharing Andy. Sorry this happened to you. You helped people by sharing.
Thanks Andy. So sorry this happened to you.
Thanks for sharing the PSA Andy! No shame and I’m glad you were transparent with showing how even the best of us can be sucked into something like this.
I had a friend fall for the same thing. Scary how real they make it!
And when I was on the phone with the scammer, he said his name was Michael from my credit union fraud department. He even said he made me an appointment the next day to go into the credit union and get my new debit card. I get there and they just look at me like first of all you don’t have an appointment and we don’t have a Michael in the fraud department and I about died. It was so believable.
It's great to have this personal story from Andy as a reminder/warning, but they really should've had 1 minute with a bank/cyber security expert to clearly outline the do and don'ts.
Most people, sadly, don't listen to experts. They listen to celebrities. That's why this was probably more effective, and kudos to him for doing it.
This happened to me too. I lost some money but I called my bank immediately and was able to stop the withdrawals before it got out of control. Be vigilant, these scammers are quite sophisticated.
So good of Andy to come forward and alert other people to these scammers. Sorry this happened to you. But thank you for sharing the process, Andy!
How scary.
It happened to me too and I went into the bank and they also told me that if that ever happens and supposedly your bank calls from the fraud department to just hang up & then call back the number on the back of your card
I’ve so nearly been caught. Two emails looked so right. Thank you.
Please do more of these! Parents don’t believe me when I tell them. Thank you. ❤❤❤
There are UA-cam channels that call the scammers and they can see the scams happening to them without any risks. Also - Scamfish by Social Catfish is real people telling their stories
Why isn’t anything done to stop this? This world is insane.
This is wild. A very similar thing just happened to me two weeks ago. They were so savvy and sophisticated. When I was on the phone with my bank they continued to call my phone pretending to be my bank. It drove me bonkers and I didn't sleep for a few days.
That is awful.
Ugh! So sorry that this happened to you but thank you for sharing
It tells you on the alert “ we will never call you for this code”
Basically, if you get anything like this at all, don’t respond to anything or your phone, call your bank directly
This is awful!, even hearing about this I’m still worried that I could fall for it .
shared this story to my young adult children who just inherited money from their deceased dad. That money is for their future
Thank you for having Andy Cohen share his story. I've heard several scary scam stories in recent months. I know it's embarrassing; it's so good of him to warn others.
Andy, I am very sorry this happened to you. Thank you for sharing your experience, so others don’t get scammed 🙏🏻❤️!!
This is very great of him to share. The nearly same exactly thing happened to me. I just happened to get a gut feeling about 15 seconds prior to the wire transfers and hung up. It’s so sad, really!
I almost did that but my daughter overheard my conversation and told me to hang up
Happened to me 6-2-22.
They contact you and pretend that they are trying to help PREVENT fraud...when THEY are actually the culprit. It's Scary & Sad.
Thrilled he came forward! No one can say “what they would do”, scammers are out of control.
There’s only one way to shut this down, junk email has to go away. No one should be allowed access to us
Don’t answer phone calls or sign into anything from an email address EVER. No one from the bank, IRS, or license bureau is that nice or helpful 😂
I have to keep reminding myself about that.
It definitely wasn’t a coincidence his email was probably already compromised and once they seen he was getting a new card they could do the plan.
Great job Andy for putting your embarrassment aside to highlight this. Very sophisticated scam
I work for a credit union in online fraud.... people fall for this all the time. We have told members in every way possible over and over to not give out codes texted to you... yet they just keep doing it!!! Slow down and think people!!
Sorry can you explain more what you mean.
@@mrscitrine3592 we're trained consumers: we're conditioned and that gets played.
Thanks for the head's up. I appreciate getting informed about this. I don't answer my phone at all if I don't know who is calling. If it's important, they'll leave a voicemail. If "a bank" called me, I'd hang up and call the number for my bank that is on the back of my debit card just to be safe.
I wish Hoda and the other host would let him speak without interrupted
They don't know how to shut their traps. I'm watching this out of curiosity. Otherwise, I don't watch what I call "fluff brain" TV.
Love all three of these wonderful people! Thank you all for the PSA.
I’m so sorry Andy . I was scammed myself on social media. It was so terrible and really hurt my family especially my mom . After 5 to almost 6 years I’ve been more happy being off social media and doing things I love. I hope other people who are using social media. Tell your family and cancel social media
4:28 “When money is wired out of your account, it’s gone.” What an elaborate bank/fraud scam Andy was subjected to. This could be anyone.
Andy,
This was so helpful-thank you for sharing this.
So sorry this happened to you.
Scammers have upped their games big time. I work in marketing and tried to place an order for custom packaging. Almost got scammed by not one but two different companies. It’s crazy out there. Be extra vigilant.
wow...thank you for sharing this with us, Andy...so sorry this happened to you!!!
What I’m tired of is law enforcement claiming this stuff is beyond their ability-no its not-its not funded and we are past the point we can consider this division optional
This is so important! Thank you so much for talking about this. So sorry for what you went through.
Years ago i got a call saying they were fraud alert
I hung up and called the company directly.
Remember to NEVER trust the caller ID. I know exactly how this can happen. I would tell you how it is done here, but I dont want another potential crook to try it. Years ago I was getting calls on my caller ID and when I called the number back, they were baffled. I called the phone company once I suspected how it was done. They put a supervisor on the phone. I asked can this be done like this. She said yes. So do not trust the caller ID
Always go to bank if you lose your bank card. The threat actors know more than you do.
😮 Almost sounds like insider activity... gotta be extra suspicious and vigilant these days. Thanks for sharing.
My conclusion: Do not answer anything over the phone : just go in person into the bank -- one on one -- do not talk to anyone over the phone.
Something similar happened to my husband and it's always these types of situations where you lose a debit card or in husband's case expecting a package from overseas. He only gave them his social but we had to put a freeze on his credit account to ensure no identity theft. They phish for information and get you when you least expect it.
Your bank won’t email you. Ugh so frustrating.
Banks do e-mail though
Totally sucks . We’ve all been scammed at some point. Losers!
Thank you for sharing this story. 😢
My dad was the victim of a gift card scam in December 2019. We got our local Cyber Crimes unit as well as the FBI involved but the money was gone - never to be recouped. I was able to settle some of the credit card charges, but then he had to pay federal taxes on the amount that was settled out. He lost about 100K when all was said and done.
Oh no! Sorry to hear that.
what?! please share how the scammers did it
@@thatnikkadaman yeh, gift card? 100 GRAND? Sounds like a Bail Money scam: you relative is in prison in Zimbabwe and you need to bail him out, with Gift Cards! Dad almost fell for it, as ABSURD as it seems. Dad ALSO had dementia creeping up on him. That's does not help.
Scam artist are sooo good! I’ve had to think twice a few times before responding! Especially when I order something on Amazon and get a text saying there was issues with delivery! I’m like wait a minute, how did Fed Ex get my phone number! Amazon isn’t allowed to share that 🤔
Huge thank you for sharing this !!!! How horrific. Love your advice to take a breath and call the bank yourself.
Even I’m smart enough to call my bank immediately! NEVER open any emails that you’re not sure of.
The banks number should be saved in your contacts so if you lose your card you can still call the bank.
You can also sign into your account via the bank’s app and report your card lost.
That automatically puts it on alert.
I just got a call yesterday from "my bank". They spoofed the number. Thankfully, I hung up on them. Used my known app, and called them through the known phone number. They confirmed that they didn't call me.
Sad for Andy. This is so real and it happens to a lot of people including my own family.
Be careful and thanks to Andy Cohen for sharing.
Thank you for sharing @andycohen your experience!! Unfortunately scammers are becoming more resourceful, which makes it so much more important for victims to share.
Thank you for sharing this.
This happened to me but I didn’t have enough money my bills bounced and it took 30 days to get some money back . I fell for it. It was devastating to see my money gone . Be careful and I think the most important thing like Andy said don’t fall for the urgency
It sounds like bad timing in this case. Under normal circumstances, I don't think he would have fallen for it but he had already lost his card giving the scammer an opening.
The scammers probably stole it and called him knowing he would be more receptive.
I think the SOP is, if u lose a card, just call bank hotline and have it blocked. They prioritize this. At that time, you can also ask if there are transactions that u did not make. If there is none then just wait for the new card to be delivered.
Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for sharing Mr. Andy! Yes, I go into a slight panic mode when I get scam emails/texts but I never click on links or reply. I close my phone/computer and walk away. Then I report and block. Horrible people who steal $ from hard working victims.
This is why online banking sucks. You NEED a physical branch to conduct business, especially if you suspect fraud.
These scammers are gettiing more clever. They used to give you hints that they were fake with misspelled words so they only got gullible people. Now they have wisened up. Be careful and never do banking business on a cold call. Always say thank you, hang up and/or call the bank directly .
Thank you for sharing. We are all vulnerable
I feel for him, it’s so easy to fall prey to these people once! Never again.
Ohhhh Andy no!!! So sorry to hear this happened! Thank you for being so open to let everyone know about this!
Thank you for sharing your experience!
Wow, Andy, thank you so much for sharing this with the public. This same thing happened to a friend of mine, as well as her hairdresser! I almost fell for one that involved "USPS" in an email telling me that they -- the post office -- couldn't verify my address to send on a package addressed to me. Then, they wanted $.86 (yes, eighty-six cents!) to cover extra postage. Most people would say, oh, I can pay that small an amount. I almost did, except then I -- as Andy recommended -- took a breath and realized that if anybody knows my address it's the Postal Service! So, I deleted and balocked the email. All this is so scary. I'm going to show this video to people that I know as a warning of what can happen. Again, how wonderful of Andy to talk about this.
Big respect to him for speaking out
Don't ever click on a link unless you are certain the domain is valid and legitimate. You can see the domain without clicking on it.
Something similar happened to me. Thank you Andy and Today team for bringing light to this
Very useful information.. scammers are everywhere… rule of thumb… when in doubt don’t
I'm so sorry this happened to Andy and to anyone' else, be careful.
Wow amazing ! Thanks Andy for giving an important heads-up 👍🏻😮😮😮 how terrible!
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for talking about this. People are so embarrassed and ashamed for failing for a scam. That happened to a family member of mine. The money was reimbursed the money from the bank. It took 5 month and 2 days but got it back plus an extra1500.00 because the lack of the Bank's due diligence. I've posted a video how to get your money back on youtube. I hope you got your money back.
Wire transfers can't be reversed. The bank also considers him liable since he "authorized" the charges by giving them the codes.
@gumdrop27 they said that about debit cards, too. But banks are supposed to detect unusual activity. Again, where there's a will, there's a way.
After getting a number of obviously bogus emails from companies, such as Xfinity, Norton, PayPal and so on, I noticed very quicky the email addresses were totally wrong, I'm glad Andy stressed that. I would have also liked to have asked Andy if the person that he spoke to had an accent, because the majority of these fraudulent call centers are located overseas.
Report them as spam so the email provider can flag them for other people.
This literally happened to me two years ago. The way he’s explaining is how this happened to me. Such a horrible violation. 😢
great info, thanks!!
Yes Andy…. We listened! Thanks so much for sharing and alerting us to this crime🙏
This is so important!! Glad he is speaking out and is not embarrassed!! I’ll forward this to family and friends..
