Not as easy to refuse, with a broken femur...Luckily, they are honest near me, and only charged $80...Got a customer for life. Anything I need towed, and I call James Jr( His dad retired)...
Call your insurance company first and find out where they want the car towed to.That is if it needs to be towed . kIf the vcar still rolls and the radiator holds water you probably can drive it.Slowly with flashers on. You might just drive it to your house until you talk to you insurance company . They may want to evaluate it first.
tell me about it. I am an insurance adjuster and body shops and tow companies hold cars hostage. They even trick drivers right after they wreck to sign paperwork to get them to take it to their body shop. Its a big scam. Imagine being in your first accident, standing in the middle of the intersection waiting on police and all you want to do is just go home. The tow driver comes with a smile and says he will take care of everything for you. He has you sign paperwork right then and there while you are still upset and havent had time to research body shops. He then takes it to the body shop that they have deals worked out with and gets a piece of the action. Believe it or not but most big name insurance companies are on your side. Its the body shops and tow companys that are the swindlers and tricksters. The body shops that are partnered with the insurance companies are among the best. We want our customers to be happy in the end so we only partner witht the best shops. Also notice I said BIG name insurance companies. The little insurance companies are nightmares for their customers and take months to inspect your car.
Lesson of the day: if you DO accept to be towed, ask to get towed HOME till your insurance appoints you an auto-shop, then talk to the auto-shop to see if they have a tow truck.
So glad they exposed these scammers. Im glad I got to share my story on this segment. Another tip for everyone in GTA area. if you get into an accident, and the car isn't drivable (such as mine) and a tow is available, and you choose NOT to take it, the cops can give you a ticket after a couple hours for impeding traffic or some BS. so your very first call should be to CAA or insurance and get a tow on its way. not only will you be protected by cops that pressure you (like mine did) can be kept at bay. safe driving everyone.
+Sahil M thanks for sharing your story Sahil - I too suffered a problem with Lyons Auto Body too, unfortunately they know the system too well and prey on folks like us. Be safe!
+Abdallah Timuroglu how did the car end up there in the first place? If you took it there, go to the court house literally down the street from them, and file a lawsuit or complaint. They cannot hold it hostage. If you signed a work order and the insurance isn't involved, you might need to speak with a lawyer as that can make things difficult.
Most "nice" cops (or cops in a good mood) will actually give you a verbal warning, but that one who wanted to argue, if I was a cop there, I would have asked "are you seriously trying to push your luck?, you really want a ticket/fine?"
or the cops can help release the vehicle of poor victims who fall for this scamm ... the problem is the laws do not support intervention of police in such matters .. which is why scammers win ..
@reshi p Not all of them, but most take cash where it gets to. There are some very good police men and honests, but it's very rare to run into a good, nice and honest man and if he'd thrived in business they always push them to ruin... It's very difficult to survive and stay honest and normal, there's a lot of pressure from all sides...
most people are naive to the laws, with the operator claiming the company has a contract with the police. Isn't misrepresentation for gain illegal? Especially if you claim to be with the police?
@@1foolishcaribou195 they are not naive only to the laws, they are naive in general. People still tend to trust others, even when they know they just can´t trust anyone. But its easy and comfortable to let others help me, even if i don´t need their "help". Someone even told me he feels sorry for me that i don´t trust others. My question is, HOW can i trust anyone in this dirty world? Only people still doing things just for their own beliefs are fanatics... Real trust is always hard to get and easy to lose. At least it should be...
The issue is every ticket they issue is a court case, eventually it just gets too impossible for the officer with 2000 cases a month to deal with them all, or they take too long and the ticket gets thrown out because it took so long and isn't a "fair trial".
I love how they all talk about how they have kids and families that they need money for, but they are perfectly fine taking money from others that are in the same situation. Just shows how much they care
@@JacobLozano-mr8ll Oh, it most certainly does. The key difference is that most impound yards have either their own armed muscle, or a cozy relationship with the local cops. Sometimes they have both.
This happened to my elderly dad 2 yrs ago. He rear-ended a car, minor accident. But the lady wouldn't get out of the car, and instead called a tow truck, who insisted he take my dad's car, even though both cars were totally fine. Dad, being 85, was nervous and complied. He didn't call me till later. When I talked to the tow truck driver, he said the car was in a lot, and that his people have to fix it. When I went there, the car was parked in the back behind so many cars, and he said you can take your car but we're not moving the other cars. I threatened to call the cops. Anyways, long story short, we finally got the car. So yes, be very careful with tow truck drivers.
@@ciaran4962 Well, they kept it for 2 weeks, and all the while, I told the tow truck driver that what he was doing to an elderly man was very wrong. He must've understood that, because then he released the car. If dad wasn't elderly, I think we would've been in real big trouble.
100% agree AND None of us make good choices when we are stressed and/ or hurt, your insurance company should treat you with respect and care if they do not fire them after the event, vote with your money! I had my Jeep stolen from my work in downtown Detriot in the early hours of 2 or 3 am and my insurance agent had her husband come and pick me up, I still send Christmas cards to them ten years after the fact. FYI I could not even get the Detriot police to come to my shop to make the report, I had to find a ride to the station only to wait for hours to have the report filed.
Australia too. Probably the world over. I have concluded that Towtruck drivers are generally nasty people, afterall they are the ones who tow for something as simple as a parking infraction. Just no empathy.
I have kids, so it's ok if I'm a paid hitman because I have bills to pay. Criminals will 99% of the time self justify their crimes, regardless of who they hurt, they excuses are completely worthless.
I have kids and yet I have a legit job. I'm not ripping people off, so try the correct way. And you will get much farther and maybe a thank you along the way
I wonder how these towing companies would feel if, in addition to being fined, THEIR tow trucks were towed away for breaking the law? Hmmm. Towing fees, storage fees, the fine itself, loss of income, court appearance.....
@@nisha2536 Smith and Wesson said he's not surprised the service lady is Indian. Not to be confused with an Indian with a feather but an Indian with a dot. Hope this clarifies things for you. 👌👍
My son hit a deer not long ago, the tow bill was 800.00. I found out it is in how they write it up so insurance companies will pay. They list it as a "recovery" not a simple tow. After finding this out I called a different tow company and said I broke down and needed car to be towed home from same location to very near the location where sons car was towed. Was quoted 145.00. The tow truck companies are committing Insurance fraud and getting away with it.
That is quite a bit for the deer accident, and your broke down car, but as a tow truck driver myself people don't take into consideration the company has to bill for fuel, time and they have to have really good insurance due to some people having super nice vehicles and that way if they were to get into a wreck or something else happen they can cover the charge through insurance. I do agree some tow companies charge wayyyy too much, but that's why you do your research and see who is priced the best!
I know I am late to this, but I'm curious as to what the itemized charges, not the amounts, just the list of charges, were on the tow bill for the accident. Also, were the police the ones that called the tow company, or did you call them yourself? If the police called, it considered a non-consent tow, and the fees are usually higher then a "private" tow for a broken down vehicle. The term "recovery" can be very broad. The tow company I work for, in order for it to be considered a recovery, the vehicle must not be drivable, and has to be winched up onto the flatbed.
I'm in the US and I've been in the bodywork industry for about ten years now, I have seen this done a few times and we confronted the customers about it and then contacted the authorities. Needless to say, the tow dudes lost their jobs and fined. what I'm seeing here just makes me sick to my stomach and severely angry.
I mean for what...."stealing" back your own car? lol i was wondering if the guy in the vid "stole" his car back at gunpoint n left...would they come after him to steal his car or what
The practice of holding a car until payment is common, our company does that as well, however, the way they go about it is sketchy... Normal tow fees are much lower, A normal crash call is 160.50 taxes included for our company, our storage is 25 a day, winch out is 50-100 an hour additional, if it goes to our shop you pay when you pick it up, including storage or you don't get it back and we file for title, we have to be paid for our jobs, however, I will tell you ahead of time if I will only be giving you the option to go to our shop (depends on the circumstances) usually at night I will only give you the option of going to my shop, In which case I will tell you and you can choose if you want to continue or not, and we will see if the police will allow it or if you are a road hazard and need to be towed either way, although a lot of times you also have the option to choose where you are towed to and you will pay when I drop it, the idea of just showing up towing the car to a shop and holding the car hostage with a 500-1000 dollar bill is dishonest and seems like it would be illegal.
This is still a problem 5 years later, got approached by 3 tow truck drivers and all told me my car was undrivable, ended up driving it 5 hours back home. These guys are crooks, call insurance and get a tow truck # through them
that was my point and it was a good point so WTF was yours? you said the same F _ _ KING thing I did just different words so just calm the F _ _ CK down
? what does Canada have to do with my comment? he said there extortionists and I said like us government what does that have to do with the vid being made in Canada??
If your confused worried and don't know what to do just after a crash, just make sure you agree a price for a tow and the destination is your home (if that is possible). Once you have calmed down at home, and had a chance to call your insurance company and or found a reputable body shop to repair the car - then get it towed by them from your home to their shop for an agreed fee. Although it seems like double handling - actually towing is cheaper than paying over priced towing and storage and then waiting 90 days for over priced repair work. Certainly much cheaper than getting caught in scams like those shown. A tow fee in a city should be $100-$250 - if its more - be concerned
It's probably because running a business isn't against the law...Especially when they pay their taxes. Funny we never hear of this problem at a strip club...
The bylaw is just recently introduced at that time period so they prefer educating them or warning them until the law becomes in full effective. Also do you really want to deal with an accident and ticket 7 tow truck drivers at the same time? Some already fled when the cops showed up.
@@Armor23OnPatrol I'm not sure how they do it in Canada but I live in Florida tow truck driver and they have us on a rotation system which the police control if there is an accident and they assessed the vehicle cannot be moved safely or driven then they call whoever is next in line that has already been certified by either the local police are handling it or the state police and by certified I mean everybody's IDs been ran that runs with them all the trucks of inspected to make sure they are safe proper impound yard must be established and all fees our uniform set buy them the state police or the County Police that's how you stop that crap real quick
in my country, the netherlands, when you crash you call your insurance company. they send a tow truck to you free of charge and you can choose where you want your car to go. if you don't want to get it fixed you can take the damaged car home. If you want to get it fixed immediatly you can choose which repair shop they have to bring your car to. as long as it is whitelisted ( which almost every shop is) insurance will handle everything from there on, even a rental car is usually free of charge.
Jules It’s like that where I live in the US. I’ve gotten into multiple accidents and I call police first the insurance second. “Free” tow for me yaaaaay!
Most people in Canada also have some sort of roadside assistance. It's just these tow trucks are literally there within minutes usually before the police because they sit on the shoulder of the highways illegally. So most people just accept their tows out of convince and regret it later on. These guys are also pretty intimidating too.
Yup, most insurance policies in Canada will cover the tow. You're also free to use whatever repair shop you choose, the insurance companies do have preferred shops they deal with. But you're under no obligation to use them and are free to use any shop you choose as long as they are licensed. You can even have a quote provided from a licensed shop and choose to do the repairs yourself, so long as you prove they are completed and do not exceed the initial quote.
@@csrb338 well now you know what these scammers are up to. So if you were in a small collision and they tried to tow your car you would know better. So it seems it's both.

I've only been towed twice in my driving life, both times were with CAA in Canada, and both times were free. Both times towed to my house, one of the times with almost 100km away, obviously they were accidents, one my engine blew and the other was with a flat and had no spare tire with me or flat fix kit
They tow truck drivers trick you into signing the work order. You can't sue because you gave them permission and accepted the terms and conditions of the contract without realizing it. Also, that 190 dollar ticket is garbage. It needs to be 1000 dollars for it to work. Each tow truck driver can make anywhere from 800-1500 per accident tow they bring to the body shop. Who cares about the 190 dollar ticket... it's still well worth it for the tow truck drivers to not follow the law.
In the states you can be shot for stepping on a an overhanging blade of grass on the sidewalk. In Canada you can't sue intill you have already been killed.

I suspect there are contributions to the Police Benevolent Association in that town from the Tow Trick Association. The cop kept talking about enforcing the law, but did he ever actually issue a ticket?
thats whats great about america lol...a couple years back i was nailed really good in a parking lot by a woman going 40 at an angle across the lot. My car was probably fine to drive but it was pretty bad so i didnt want to risk it. I called AAA and used a FREE tow, to drop it at my house. The next morning i called my insurance company which was also AAA and asked where they recommend i take it for the $7k repair, then they sent another tow truck free of charge to pick it up from my house. The police report showed the other driver at fault so they told me to rent whatever i wanted for the 3 weeks of repair as the other drivers insurance has to pay it. Got myself an Escalade for 3 weeks. Not a dime out of my pocket and insurance didnt go up. Still a spotless driving record.
@@jacoblloyd3 Perhaps you missed the point. No tow trucks randomly pulled up, i called a truck and got towed to wear i wanted to go no questions asked or suggestions on where to take it. That was the point. The rest was rambling.

I had an accident where my door got dinted in so I couldn't open the door from the outside. But it would still open. I asked the cop if it was legal to drive my car like that with the tow truck driver right there. The cop was stuttering about it a couple times, until I pressed him again and he reluctantly said yes. Like he was in the corner of the tow truck driver. But I drove it away and didn't pay a dime for an unnecessary tow.

Just watched 2 videos this and car rentals and I am amazed. Even though I am in the USA they do the same here. I just called my insurance company and checked everything. My ins covers ALL rentals and towing under my policy. They said any accident call them 1st and they will make everything work right.
The main point is at the very end of the video 16:43 - if you get into an accident call your insurance company on which garage to take the car to. Don't trust the tow truck guy. I'll just add - consider getting CAA.
no. motor clubs are bad, and try and pass off services to the lowest bidder. jjust call a tow yourself or ask who the police recommend. make sure they're affiliated with a towing association
@@Commissar0617 CAA is NOT bad. Can't imagine why you would think it is. I'd be much more suspicious of any insurance company giving honest advice. We were members of SMA when we were living in SK. then AMA in Alberta. Held off joining BCAA because they were charging Alberta members for maps at one point. Worked for years for shops that were contracted to tow for BCAA. The tow rates were noticeably lower than we were paid by other companies.
I agree to call insurance company first...give them the name off the tow company...most insurance companies will know if the tow company is legit or not...as for CAA on a quiet day you might wait 30 minutes but on a bad weather day it is not uncommon to wait 3 or 4 hours for service.
He probably did since they stayed and other guy ran. He probably their to wait for the other officers to show up and just scare away tows. Kinda like if a ambulance reaches the scene they have to wait for police to clear it before entering. What puzzles me how does the tow trucks get faster to the scene than a police car when police cars literally can skip lights and speed.
Always have it towed to your house till insurance tells you where they want to take it even if it’s completely destroyed sidenote whenever you call a tow truck or if one just randomly appears always ask them about their pricing if they can’t give you a straight answer don’t let them touch your carMy car recently was totaled and I called about seven tow truck companies before I finally decided on one and had the best pricing and would tower across state lines without being a little bastard about it

Omg! He refused $300 illegal money because he's Muslim?!!!! He's breaking bylaws is that not illegal?!!! I think the guy that commented on the tow truck driver's religion is just as crooked as the tow truck driver!!!!
I was in a accident back in 1995, and the officer asked who I would like for the tow, and I told him the body shop that I used, and that shop came right out, remember if you use a shop, they ( the police ) will try to work with you, otherwise use the police (Duty Tow), lots of areas, police duty tow is rotated so often between different shops, or they have regs regarding fees, etc..
I absolutely LOVE how every time they confront these crooks on camera they just keep filming and demanding answers regardless of consent you guys are awesome

How is what Lyons is doing legal? They're literally holding the car for ransom. Couldn't the driver have gotten the police involved? If he did not authorize the work done, he should not be on the hook for the bill.
This has all the makings of a serious law suit. Where repeat offenders such as Lyons should get punished if they withheld the property for that amount of time.
Storage fees if they don't pay you don't have to release and since it was 8000 for 2 days your going to end up getting it fix there so u don't pay 8 k and then another 15k to someone else

Wow! I didn't know this was happening. I only call BCAA for towing because I have membership, and it's been well worth it -- calling your insurance company or a roadside assistance firm that you're a member of is always the safest approach.

In WA, USA the State regulates police tow rates and all impound rates. Private rates we can charge whatever but you dont want to over charge and get a bad rep. Its about being honest.
Yeah I currently drive a tow truck. It is nothing like this here in MN. No company will respond to an accident until the customer or the police call it in... The vehicle simply goes to our lot after a collision and the insurance company handles everything for the person involved from there. It's the customers car and they are able to do whatever they want with it, bring it to any collision center and get anything from the vehicle whenever they want. These Canadians are shady AF
When it comes to automobile accidents and inpoundments, the local jurisdiction(s) should either have their own tow trucks or contract with one or two tow services
Actually if you have said you don’t want them to work on it and they do it is a violation of the law. Although you will probably need evidence you can report it stolen.

Depends on the company and area. Last time I called a tow truck (it was -30F and my engine wouldnt start), the truck driver offered to give me a jump instead and only charged ~$15 when he could easily have just towed me and made more. A while before that I had to get towed across the city and only spent about $45. Both of these were late night btw when they usually charge higher rates. In the U.S. I've never heard of this problem with tow truck drivers, probably the incentive just isn't there. Yeah I'm glad somebody said the u.s. is unregulated. If taxes were unregulated we'd be outraged why let businesses be unregulated in what they charge?
im so glad, i grew up with a mechanic family and actively involved with it, so i know whats wrong with my car and what will fix it, and if its still drivable, im not gonna be paying over 1k for a tow when i can just make a call to my parents or grandparents for a free tow to his shop and fix the repairs my self
I remember the one day I had a tow truck driver ask if i needed a tow. i said no, the driver kept telling me that i shouldn't drive it, told the driver that i will call my work to get the truck towed, worked at a machine shop and got a co worker to bring the loader, and well the tow truck driver left.
exactly! The city let it get out of hand and now they have a wild fire they're trying to control. Do it the way we do it in my city. Tow trucks have to register and they get put on a tow list. They work rotation via there ability-like heavy tow. When the police get to the scene they'll request a hook. It's logged who gets the car. And there's approved range on tow & storage rates. And you can tell them where to tow your vehicle. Their yard (secured storage) a shop or even to your house
had an accident 3 weeks ago the Cop that arrived at the scene told me its a punishable crime to offer towing services if they haven't been called by the involved parties.
Here tow trucks are either called by the person needing them, or pulled from the police rotation (several companies sign up and the police rotate through them, with the dispatcher actually contacting them). If you were involved in an accident and didn’t call one, be it roadside assistance or whomever you chose, then the police will ask you do you want us to call a specific tow company or do you want the next available. It is against the law for them to just show up and solicit their services. Honestly I don’t see why everywhere doesn’t do it like this, would solve problems like this. Basically you don’t self dispatch, you either wait for the person needing the tow to call or you wait for the police to call.
My advice is don't call the police at all if possible so that nobody gets a ticket. If a policeman shows up and they get you a tow you also get a ticket and a mark on your record along with a visit to traffic court. Lots of money and time wasted in court when you could just exchange insurance and info and call your insurance company for a tow.
I had a tow truck show up first, call police, say police ordered me off the side of the road. Tried to ask the cop and he drove away. I didn't have the money so they were trying to have me sign over ownership. I brrowed the money from cashmoney then was left at timmies for 7 hours. My tow bill was $900 and to fix my truck was only $1300
Thank you so much for not blurring out the shops and names and everyone's face so we don't get scammed as well. Great video and detail of how there evil scam scheme is. :)

tell me about it.

The cop needs to stop giving these drivers breaks and ticket them every time they see them..

He didn't call me till later. When I talked to the tow truck driver, he said the car was in a lot, and that his people have to fix it. The tow truck companies are committing Insurance fraud and getting away with it.
Is he alright?
That is quite a bit for the deer accident, and your broke down car, but as a tow truck driver myself people don't take into consideration the company has to bill for fuel, time and they have to have really good insurance due to some people having super nice vehicles and that way if they were to get into a wreck or something else happen they can cover the charge through insurance. I do agree some tow companies charge wayyyy too much, but that's why you do your research and see who is priced the best!
@@cardboardtruck1009 yes he was fine thank you for asking.

A tow fee in a city should be $100-$250 - if its more - be concerned

in my country, the netherlands, when you crash you call your insurance company. they send a tow truck to you free of charge and you can choose where you want your car to go. if you don't want to get it fixed you can take the damaged car home. If you want to get it fixed immediatly you can choose which repair shop they have to bring your car to. as long as it is whitelisted ( which almost every shop is) insurance will handle everything from there on, even a rental car is usually free of charge.

It’s like that where I live in the US.

They tow truck drivers trick you into signing the work order. You can't sue because you gave them permission and accepted the terms and conditions of the contract without realizing it. Good thing to remember at all times, don't ever trust any business or person if they are the ones trying to reach you.
Always have it towed to your house till insurance tells you where they want to take it even if it’s completely destroyed sidenote whenever you call a tow truck or if one just randomly appears always ask them about their pricing if they can’t give you a straight answer don’t let them touch your carMy car recently was totaled and I called about seven tow truck companies before I finally decided on one and had the best pricing and would tower across state lines without being a little bastard about it
never leave your car out of your sight, the drivers like to stop and rummage thru your car for stuff to steal
I wouldn’t bring the car to any insurance shop they cut so many corners it’s crazy I suggest asking family and friends and going from there
teosins if u dont go in house it can give them reasons to deny your claim or just make your life miserable for trying to get money from them.

How is what Lyons is doing legal? They're literally holding the car for ransom. Couldn't the driver have gotten the police involved? If he did not authorize the work done, he should not be on the hook for the bill.
Yeah , I want to know that too. laws are crazy , Sometimes you get serious jail for something much lesser while big crimes go unpunished.
This has all the makings of a serious law suit. Where repeat offenders such as Lyons should get punished if they withheld the property for that amount of time.

Most of the time the tow truck companies are friends of police chiefs or otherwise have agreements with police to charge exorbitant prices.
AAA (Triple A) in the U.S. is worth every penny. Tip: take note of anything the tow truck driver says or does, like tearing off part of your bumper, because their insurance is liable and your insurance company will fight to have them pay to fix it.

Marketplace is what ABC 2020 used to be
Im no longer a collision & impound tow driver & drive a 2 car carrier for auctions & dealers but going back to my original role in Towing. This article barely scratched the surface on the dozens of angles & scams pros. use. All we want to know is. " Do You Have Full Coverage Insurance " ? I've even towed cars I KNEW were perfectly safe to drive home. But goes the saying. If it isn't me. There's 20 other companies & 60 other drivers on duty that will. I live in Ca. USA. My advice is DO NOT LET TOW CO GIVE YOU ADVICE. DO WHATEVER YOUR INSURANCE CO. INSTRUCTIONS ARE !!! Just FYI to all that reads this. Im now a well paid tow operator for a Transport Co. & I specialize in High End & Classic Cars at about $1.10 per mile. Should your car end up in our yard. There are zero additional charges. Caveat emptor
How in the world is that even legal? How can those businesses even operate?
"Legal" means nothing when there's no cops around.
Criminals have a free pass in Canada. I've been legally robbed for $5000 in the last 8 years in Ontario. You can't fight, you lose. Courts don't ever say a company was wrong. Even with evidence. You wouldn't believe how easy it is to get a judgement and wage garnishment. You cant do nothing, if they even tell you about it. I got my wages garnished with 2 days notice
Capitalism.
It isn't technically legal.
If you must have the vehicle towed have it towed to your home or arrange your own tow truck and then arrange the repairs with the insurance company yourself.
Best excuse of all time

In WA, USA the State regulates police tow rates and all impound rates. Private rates we can charge whatever but you dont want to over charge and get a bad rep. Its about being honest.
Faxxs the tow trucks over here are only like 95 to $150
Yeah I currently drive a tow truck.

This is Canada. But in the states, a tow truck place kept my car for five weeks. After that I called the Better Business Bureau. I got my car in two days...NO CHARGE!!
In Australia it is $180au to have your car towed after an accident. I live in small city America though, not a metro in Canada.
In the U.S. I've never heard of this problem with tow truck drivers, probably the incentive just isn't there. Yeah I'm glad somebody said the u.s. is unregulated. If taxes were unregulated we'd be outraged why let businesses be unregulated in what they charge?

had an accident 3 weeks ago the Cop that arrived at the scene told me its a punishable crime to offer towing services if they haven't been called by the involved parties.
Basically you don’t self dispatch, you either wait for the person needing the tow to call or you wait for the police to call.
it makes our life as a tow operator easier honestly
