Sad scene. This is basically Tommy’s last ditch effort to find some meaningful connection with his friends before he dives off the deep end. And they couldn’t care less. He deserved better than them.
They were all addicts apart from him. It's all they cared for really, but most of them coped with it and were somewhat functional. Was inevitable he would want to join in with his friends to not be left out. Yet he was perhaps the least mentally capable of dealing with the addiction. The cleanest person gets the dirtiest when they fall, their image shattered, their motivation questioned, their impulses tested. Sometimes a drowning man doesn't want to be saved.

It's well written and much easier to "read" as an audiobook, but the subject matter itself will never not be terrible.

Mark Renton's state of mind and worldview was created in this environment, so yeah, he's not very enthusiastic about being Scottish.

Trainspotting was very popular in Scotland at the time. Except it was clearly mostly filmed in Glasgow. You can tell by the colour of the buildings.

It's hard to judge what's playing in the Scottish soul. However this scene is so 1000% Polish what we were feeling in 80's 90's in the previous century. The only change is to replace English with German/Soviet and Renton would express all the grief, frustration of Polish soul that time. So miserable. That vodka he's drinking & anger fit so well.

When I'm down in the southern United States, people have problems with my accent, and when I was in Aberdeen, for some people I needed a translator, I couldn't understand them at all. Orkney Islanders, and they guy I had translating swore they were speaking English.
