I think there's a huge message in this clip about leaving toxic people behind if you must to. (TALKING HERE ABOUT THE FILM NOT THE BOOK)
Tommy was a great guy, he didn't do drugs, he had a good job, he was relatively happy with his girlfriend, he was an athletic bloke, loved nature, and in all, he loved life in his own way.
And yet, for some reason, he insisted to stick around with Mark, Spud and Sick boy: a bunch of depressed junkies that didn't contribute anything to him. What's even worse, Tommy's eventual death resulted from a chain of events of his friendship with this guys.
In conclusion, one must honestly check if one's mates are the kind of people one must hang around with.

Changing Tommy into some average guy for the movie was a mistake. In the book he has his own issues, he's a massive speed freak who drinks a lot but in the movie he's completely straight and it makes no sense that he would still hang out with these guys.

Actually, Tommy was never the perfect man himself. In the book, he takes party drugs as often as Renton and the gang take heroin, but they toned that down in the movie in order to make him more sympathetic. Also, in the prequel to Trainspotting, Skag Boys (which I'm reading now and have almost finished), it shows that before Tommy met Lizzie, he committed as many crimes as Begbie, but not to the same psychopathic degree. In other words, he still beat people up, but more as support for his mate, rather than for the same reasons as the psychotic Begbie.
Later on in the book, when he and Liz finally hook up, he realises that he doesn't want to get old and keep doing that same sort of shit for the rest of his life (AKA, be like Begbie). Apparently, the term for those sort of people like Begbie that he uses is MALT: Middle-Aged Leith Team. Happens right at the end of the fourth/sixth volume of the book. (I'm right at the start of the fifth volume)
I highly recommend you read both the original book, Trainspotting, and then if you liked it and want to find out more about the characters and how they wound up being who they are, then the prequel Skag Boys. I'm loving Skag Boys almost to the same extent as the original! (although it is a MUCH longer book)
