Humminbird Helix Waypoint SD Card Export, Storage, Data Backups, Uploads, and Delete

  • This helpful video will enable you to use a SD card with your Humminbird unit. Hardcore anglers who use Helix units and store lots of waypoints will avoid maxing out their waypoint storage. Solix users should also back up data. Even if you don’t max out your storage, it’s a wise idea to back up your data on a regular basis. Waypoints are valuable data you never want to lose! Whether you’re doing an update, making specific lake cards, or selling your unit, using a SD card with your Humminbird unit is an important skill all users should understand. You will learn to export, upload, and delete waypoints on your unit. Don’t make the mistake of doubling, tripling, quadrupling... up waypoints and maxing out your waypoint storage!

    Had a humminbird helix 5 on my kayak previously and didn’t save a lot of waypoints but I also knew storage was limited. I’ll probably do this now with my new helix 8. I have a lot of smaller lakes so I will probably organize them by area or the main road they are off of.

      Helix store a lot of waypoints so if you save a limited # you should be fine. If you’re going to start saving a lot more then I would go this route.

    Steve, thank you for all of this great information you share! Couple questions:
    1) Do new SD cards need to be formatted prior to use? What format?
    2) How do I delete stored autochart info from the unit's 8hr memory? I don't want that information to conflict with the stored info on my zero lines card.
    Thanks

    • @stevechiassonfishing5876

      The format is Fat32 and you can see how to do it in the video linked below
      ua-cam.com/video/4dJFPCg_v0w/v-deo.html
      As for the Autochart question, I don’t believe that you will have any issues, if you are not using the Zerolines card, it will use the internally stored information. If you have the Zerolines card, it will default to the card as far as I know. I would recommend you confirm that with Humminbird tech support since I am not 100% sure at this time. If I come across the answer later, I will get back to you.

    I quit skipping over any of your vids just because I read the title and think, "I already know how to do that". Your so thorough, that I always learn something, and usually a lot! And on the topics I know I need help on, you make it very clear and easy to follow. So, if waypoints are on the Helix 12 AND the card already, uploading from Card to Helix will duplicate the waypoints on the unit. But after adding new waypoints while fishing on the Helix, and then downloading data to the card, it only adds the new way points, and doesn't duplicate the ones already on the card? Thank you for all the time you put into these vids!

    • @stevechiassonfishing5876
      @stevechiassonfishing5876  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for the kind words! You are correct, adding waypoints will be exported to the card overwriting what was previously on the card. If you have 500 waypoints when you upload the data from card to unit, then save 25 new waypoints, when you select all and export to card, you will have 525 waypoints on the card.

    • @stevechiassonfishing5876
      @stevechiassonfishing5876  2 роки тому +1

      If the waypoints have been uploaded to the unit, do not upload again or you will duplicate waypoints.

    HI Steve. I am moving from Lowrance to Humminbird and this process of getting waypoints under control has me scrambling and in a pinch. I had 3450 waypoints on my lowrance units (no waypoint limitation, 10 years of waypoints). The 2500 caught me by surprise and I am trying to figure out a way to 'see' my lowrance waypoints visually so I can edit them down, and carve them out into 'lakes' as you suggested. Any help finding utilities to do this appreciated. The hard part is getting a visual before deleting. That is question 1. Question 2 is let's say I managed to get this figured out, when I load the lake SD card, update it with new waypoints on the water for a day....., am I going to have to go to each of my 3 helix units to repeat the upload/delete at the end of day process described in this video?

    • @stevechiassonfishing5876

      Getting Lowrance waypoints onto Humminbird is a pain because they are not in compatible formats. I just started over when I converted to Humminbird a long time ago. I always save my waypoints on one unit that shares to all other units through the 5 port Ethernet switch therefore you have to do this on one unit only.

      The waypoints are only saved on the unit where you save the coordinates. The waypoints are shared by the Ethernet cable. I save waypoints to one unit only. You only need a sd card in the unit you save the waypoints. If you want to take screenshots on the other unit then you will need a sd card in there as well.

      Hey Steve I'm confused, probably not absorbing your answer correctly. In a previous post you commented: Steve Chiasson Fishing
      5 months ago
      Thank you for the kind words! You are correct, adding waypoints will be exported to the card overwriting what was previously on the card. If you have 500 waypoints when you upload the data from card to unit, then save 25 new waypoints, when you select all and export to card, you will have 525 waypoints on the card.
      if the waypoints have been uploaded to the unit, do not upload again or you will duplicate waypoints.
      Are these 2 situations not the same?

    • @stevechiassonfishing5876
      @stevechiassonfishing5876  2 роки тому

      Hi Gary, these are not the same situation. If you upload the data on your sd card to your unit, let’s say 300 waypoints. Those 300 waypoints are now on your unit and will remain there until deleted. If you upload the same card again, you will now have 600 waypoints with the original 300 waypoints now duplicated.
      The other example I referred to was you had 500 waypoints plus you wanted to add 25 points manually to your unit for a total of 525 waypoints. When you export the data to a sd card, you will overwrite the original data with what’s on your unit, the 525 waypoints.
      Uploading is transferring the data from your sd card to your unit. Overwriting data happens when you save the unit’s data to the sd card. Hopefully this helps eliminate the confusion.

    • @stevechiassonfishing5876
      @stevechiassonfishing5876  7 місяців тому +1

      The sd card will only save the waypoints that have been saved on that unit. Any waypoints from other units will not be saved. This is why I save my waypoints on one selected unit. If you only have 1 sd card, you save waypoints from 1st unit, they are on the card. If you want to save both sets onto one card, you’ll need to upload the waypoints onto the second unit first before you save. That puts all waypoints onto one unit. If you have two sd cards, you can save the waypoints from each unit onto each card. Hopefully that makes sense, if not let me know. My understanding from your question is that you wanted to save them on one card.
