Humminbird Helix, How to Manually Enter a Waypoint

  • I was recently asked a question by a gentleman who watched a video of mine. Steve wanted to know how to manually enter a waypoint while not being on the water. This video answers Steve’s question as I enter a random, made up set of coordinates (waypoint) into my Humminbird Helix in my garage at home. My channel, Steve Chiasson Fishing, welcomes video suggestions and, where possible, I will try to accommodate requests. Humminbird Helix waypoint entry skills can be a very useful skill when waypoints are shared with you from various resources.

    Hello, I am confused, if you were creating a new waypoint, why were there coordinates already posted? I truly was expecting a blank space where you were supposed to enter the "new" coordinates.. Thanks for any help

    • @stevechiassonfishing5876
      @stevechiassonfishing5876  8 місяців тому +2

      Good question, as far as I know, the unit recognizes recently visited or current location and that makes it easier to input the data. Your question does make sense as you would expect a clean slate when you start.

    Another great vid Steve. Could you possibly do one on proper transducer placement

    • @stevechiassonfishing5876
      @stevechiassonfishing5876  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Jeff, transducer placement is tricky because all boats are different. Keeping the transducer out of the turbulence is best. Using a transducer plate is a great idea as it gives you some leeway to move transducer right or left. I won’t promise I will do video but will look into it. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Steve perfect! Straight forward, step by step. No assumptions that I know how to use a Humminbird (any unit). Here is my question... Can I enter a "waypoint" (Lat/Lon) in simulation mode? I have a setup to power on my unit on my computer desk. It would be great if I could input information in simulation mode. I have a Humminbird Helix 9, G3n, CHIRP, MEGA DI+, GPS. Bernie

    • @stevechiassonfishing5876

      I would turn the sonar off, leave it in normal mode, put in your waypoints. You can try it in simulation mode but just do one to test. I always do my waypoints in normal mode.

      @stevechiassonfishing5876  Рік тому

      You’re quite welcome Jim, glad you are finding the videos helpful. The background map was showing very little detail in this video. Zooming in would definitely bring more detail into play. The Humminbird Basemap will give you the basic details of larger bodies of water. To get more detailed maps you would get a Lakemaster or Navionics chip. Do some research for your area to see which chip will provide the greatest detail for the area you fish.

    • @stevechiassonfishing5876
      @stevechiassonfishing5876  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Ricardo, I am glad the video helped you out. By going to the map or chart view, use the -,+ keys to zoom in or out on the map view and you will be able to find the waypoint number. In the video, you saw the waypoint recorded on the map after you saved it. That will give you a reference of the entered waypoint location.

    I have a question about entering the waypoints. I tried to enter in WP for some wrecks near BocaGrande FL and the entries seemed to not match the locations. They seem far south of where they show on a map. Am I entering them wrong somehow?

    That was a nice job explaining that! I have a question, I have a Helix 7 to help track my way point for when I am up front fishing. I have it communicatting with my Helix 10 at the steering wheel. I marked a waypoints with my Helix 7 but not on my 10. It shows up on my 10 when both are hooked up, but I will not let me rename it . Do I manually enter the latitude coordinates from the 7 into the Helix 10 even though it shows the waypoint on my 10? Or do I create a new waypoint and put the same information in the 10?

    Hi Steve, How do I create a route to follow using multiple way points?! Where I go out from, there are multiple reef walls and structures with few channels going in between the reef. Is there a way to program a route to go first to waypoint A, then B, C around the first reef structure, then to go straight through the channel to point D? I am sorry if this is a very basic question to you..
    Also I notice that most of the time I find the boat keeps going out the screen boundaries, and have to keep using the cursor arrows underway to get the boat to the middle of the screen.. Any idea how to change the settings to always have the boat in the middle of the screen? for navigation I try to keep one zoomed in map for half of the screen and the other half another map zoomed out. Thank you YT

    • @stevechiassonfishing5876
      @stevechiassonfishing5876  9 місяців тому +1

      To create a route, use cursor control key to move cursor to a Waypoint or position on chart. Press the GOTO key twice. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to add more waypoints to route.

    • @stevechiassonfishing5876

      If the boat is leaving the screen boundaries you probably have the cursor activated. Hit the exit button and that should solve the problem. My video on the +, - keys will help you with map navigation.

    Waypoints that I enter from a fishing hotspots map into my helix are not accurately reflected onto my lakelink map (they seem to be a few hundred feet off). I have the position format setting on the helix set to the hotspots format. Not sure what is going on....Has anyone else successfully transferred a hotspots coordinate into a helix lake master chip map?

      I haven’t used Hotspots Map but I know with Navionics or mapping chips in general, it’s hard to chart every inch of the lake. Autochart will be most accurate when making your own contours. I suspect it’s just error from the hotspots map. Use your Autochart to map the area you’re interested in and go from there. You will be pleasantly surprised by the detail of your own maps.

    • @stevechiassonfishing5876
      @stevechiassonfishing5876  6 місяців тому +1

      If they simply forgot the 3rd number, likely add the zero if they left it off intentionally. If you’re not sure you could add a 5 and that would be in the middle creating minimal error high or low. If it’s a West coordinate for example, many people, in the beginning 3 numbers, would leave off the 0 and just put 79 instead of 079. In turn that could explain why a number is missing on the end. Just a couple of my thoughts, hopefully that helps.
