Kaizoku is Japanese for pirate. The characters mean sea thief! This game made me cry as a kid and taught me to save often!!! When monsters used rub it gave me a panic attack.
My first real video game love. I adored this game, and had the Nintendo Power Strategy Guide before ever knowing about the game, buying it at Roses department store with my allowance because it looked cool. It wasn't until 6 months later when I actually rented the game, and my life was changed forever. Literally. I spent so much fucking time on this game that I can't begin to fathom.
I love how they named the random pirates "kyzoku" in the English translation. It's the Japanese word for pirate (well, kaizoku is) but their name in Japanese was just the English "pirates" written in kana. The pirates you fought in Pravoka were called "kaizoku" in Japanese instead. Basically they just flipped them around. That's some good localisation right there... and to think Tom Slattery and Koji Fox weren't at the company yet.

This is also why the Defender Sword is just named Defense among many others. Though I just now realized that Pairatsu could have been renamed to Kaizoku, probably, given the name of WarMECH at seven letters...but they might've intentionally misspelled it so Western kids would _pronounce_ it correctly instead of going "kay-zockoo"
Honestly, I didn't think you would make more jRPG-dedicated episodes after Dragon Quest I (which is relatively a short game). Double respect for that. Actually, triple... because Final Fantasy is my favorite video game franchise.

It can be good to pick up the Steel Armor if you can raise enough money before the Earth Cave, but if you've already beaten the Earth Cave and gotten the canoe you may as well just save your money and dive into the Volcano and pick up the Flame Armor (which has equal defense + additional perks) or get the Ice Armor from the Ice Cave, which is also just as good.
@@takigan Agreed. Steel armor is wholly unnecessary. The armor you have is more than enough for the Earth Cave. And I like to do the Castle of Ordeals right after, which gets you some DAMN useful equipment and is a very quick and easy trip if you know your way through the teleport maze. The volcano and ice cave are a breeze if you make that side trip first.
I cannot express how much I love that the graphics for the video are straight out of the Nintendo Power strategy guide for this game. That issue of the magazine is 100% responsible for my love of this genre of gaming. I read it over and over and over and over and over.
I always thought the experience for the monsters was a misprint in the Nintendo Power strategy guide because the experience listed was never what you got after battle (e.g. 3 Zombulls = 3150). It wasn’t until your video when you mentioned the awarded experience is PER CHARACTER that it finally clicked (3150 / 4 = 787)! Wow! Mind blown! And it only took me 32 years to figure that out! 🤣 I just assumed it was something else in the game that was bugged.
Good job, one of my favorite games. When I was 10 I remember beating this game. I will never forget the big map that came with the game and basically gives you a walkthrough during the part parts of the game. Used to make weird party combos and beat the game with em.

My meta was; Fighter, Fighter, Thief, Red Mage. Once you're adults, having Ninja and Red Mage both cast fast on the fighters in the first turn of any boss battle is a guaranteed win. You won't regret Red Mage's limited cure abilities because you won't get time to use them. Fighters can learn a bit of heal magic, saves on potions, good reason to be a secondary damage dealer. Ninja sucks but he runs good and gets a cool sword and Red Mage is two guys in one how could you say no? Nightly Warmech hunts to lv99 - good times.
I wasn't paying attention to the time stamps on this video, I just saw it was 3 hours long and thought. "Man, this a speedrun of Final Fantasy?" Hehe. Looking forward to Part 2!

The one game that started it all. The one game that got me hooked onto videogames. The one game that got me into RPGs. Final Fantasy! The 4 characters I like picking is fighter, thief. Black mage and white mage.
@@princesssprinklesthecat4192 yes so I can have ninja. In the long run my fighter becomes a knight which can use some white magic and the ninja can use some black magic. My fighter, thief. Bl mage and Wh mage set up actually works very well for me.
This game defined my childhood. I played it so much. If anyone wants to undertake the original FF in its NES form and wants to enjoy all its challenges in its pristine form, and wants a recommendation on a starter party, you can’t go wrong with a fighter, white mage, and black mage to form the basis of your party. For the 4th character it can be just about anything, but with a F/WM/BM you already have a strong , well rounded party with access to all the spells in the game, the majority of the which will help you early and and very much throughout the game. I’ve seen videos and have had discussions with others that the black belt is stronger than the fighter but from my understanding you’ll only reach that level of power when you max out at level 50. For the most part you can beat the game by the time you’re lvl 32. Personally i rarely used a red mage because not having access to all the spells and having a smaller MP pool and learning higher lvl spells slower was a big turn off. He’s much more useful early to mid-game, but i found him not that great late game.

Great classic RPG, loved FF, and great guide. This lead me to play Destiny of an Emperor from Capcom on the NES. Another great RPG you should cover here on your channel.
It’s a great game and a great walkthrough. Watching this brings back a lot of memories playing this game over and over with different parties as a kid. I found using 2 fighters and 2 black belts was the best party to easily beat the game.
Nowadays I feel like a mixed party is more fun to play (I like playing F/BB/WM/BM myself) just for the variety. But in terms of just raw power I pretty much agree. I like having some mixture of Fighter/Black Belt for 3 of my member slots and then having the 4th slot be either a White Mage or Red Mage just for the support spells (EXIT is so nice to have in some of those later dungeons after the Volcano. And the FAST spell will allow your Fighters/Black Belts to utterly murder some of the bigger enemies).
The thief is a great character. He lets you pick and choose which battles you want to fight so you can spend more time fighting the lucrative ones while avoiding the less lucrative ones. You can actually level up faster by running. Also, the Luck stat is not bugged on the thief as long as he is in the first or second row.
Just wanted to give a shout out. You really do put a lot of time, effort, and research into making these videos. Its quite impressive the work you do and can easily see why you have 67.2 k subscribers and counting. When you run out of video game titles to make guides for what are you planning to do next? I'm also curious, the game play footage that you share is that all yourself playing the games, or are you using someone else's game footage? ( Total respect regardless which way it is. ) I owned a NES as a kid and haven't played half of the games you've posted about let alone beaten the games. And yes, the first turtles game is excruciatingly difficult, nor had I known anyone who'd beaten the game before. Bravo!
when i was a kid, as soon as you get the canoe, you can take a boat to the river north of the trials castle (rat tail castle), go from boat to canoe to land on the north shore and you can enter the trials castle super early and get light axes and a bunch of other powerful items long ahead of time.
If you're playing this game using a NES ROM I'll assume you've obtained legally, I very much recommend looking up the Final Fantasy 1 Randomizer for the website's ability to enable JUST "improved" vanilla patches to your ROM. Bugged spells work. Weapons that are strong against particular monsters actually work that way. All four characters can run. The thief isn't a loser. Characters will tell you if they can learn spells or use equipment in the shops. You can buy quantities of items. And you can see weapon stats before buying them. Stuff you can do in later games basically.

Hi! Great video! I myself am a long time veteren of Final Fantasy for the NES. The only thing I do differently when starting out with the Black Belt is that I actuially DO equip him with a set of Nunchucks, but then drop them when my hit power gets high enough when un equiping them. I tried starting out with him using only bare fists, but he just wasn't doin enough damage. Back in the 90s, I got him so powerful using only his punches, that I took out Chaos with one hit!
My favorite NES game and despite how many times I've beaten it, I'll never stop loving this game. I do want to somehow, someday get a sealed copy of this game.
I completely missed out on FF and all RPGs really. As I get older I think about going back and knocking at least one of these out. This would be a good place to start. Great video.
Dude, I’ve never beaten this game because i get soo lost. Ty for the help man. Especially, with the monk and the diminishing returns on duplicate characters. Did kot know that. Bought the pixel remake yesterday and enjoying a masterpiece again.
Long time veteran player of this game, I actually think the thief is legit good. Running is very useful early game when in dire straights, and is almost mandatory for the ice cave level. When upgraded to ninja, he gives you another class with the "fast" spell, which is a huge deal at endgame. Lastly, his ability to usually attack earliest is nice when you give him "free" magic spell use items, particularly the healing ones. As a combatant he is more in line with red mage if slightly better, and in the early game thief and red mage aren't too far behind fighter in damage. I think the utility and quality of life makes thief the best 4th option over black mage, a class that is a little redundant with red mage and noticeably declines late in the late game.
I believe you can make money real early real quick in the game by doing a boat trick that involves saving and getting the first encounter on the boat. It works only with the NES version, but if you save, hop on the boat, the first encounter will always be the Kyzoku which are big money mobs. Easiest to do it at Corneria since its cheap. It might require a restart, but its a means to manipulate the spawn. Try it sometime.
My first RPG was Dragon Warrior for the NES, but Final Fantasy was the very first game I purchased for a console. I loved this game on that christmas, I was 11 or 12, about 30 years ago. And of course I later purchased FFII and FFIII for the SNES.
So here's another thing you missed. . When choosing characters, the thief is not as useless as you think. Each time you run, the character that you pick to have run has their speed / evade checked against the character 2 slots below them. So if your fighter runs, and below him you have black belt, then red mage, then black mage, it means your fighter's stats are checked against the red mage's stats to see if running will be successful. In this case, it usually won't be. And because of the way you intuitively order your characters, it's often the case that you won't have a good chance of running. . Their has a major boost on these stats. If you're deep in a dungeon, and you really need to get OUT, and you have theif and fighter in your party, you can put the thief as leader and your fighter 2 slots down, and you should be able to run from every battle. Of course you don't really need to do this either, since thief's run-chance stats are better than everyone else's, he can help the party run no matter where you put him. . Now you might ask, what about the last 2 characters? There's no one 2 slots below them, so what are they checked against? The game checks them against a RNG (random number generator). So if thief is in the last two slots, it's not clear if he'll be able to run since it's random. But if there's a slow poke 2 slots below him, you'll run nearly every time. . Anyway that's the real use of thief. You can go deep into dungeons, get tons of treasure, then get out by avoiding all the monsters... kinda what you'd imagine a thief actually doing.
It always bothered me if all four of my party members didn't have exactly the same experience point total, so I would always save and reload outside the Northwest Castle until Astos's RUB spell failed, LOL. Great playthough, and very informative.
The left side screen info is why I come to this channel over ones like Sakyomog, who play like Gods and never miss. It’s real, and it’s a way better way to gauge what you’ll ACTUALLY NEED here or there. Just because the guy I’m watching can finish the game without ever using a Potion, doesn’t mean I can. I've played through this game so many time, my favorite unique party was 2 Black Belts and 2 Red Mages, a bit of a struggle to start but by end game they're an absolute offensive force.
At roughly 13:30ish, when talking about Blackbelt, i'm surprised ya didn't say something more along the lines of "Blackbelt doesn't get a weapon... he IS the weapon!". :P

I bought this at a Micro Play store. In box with booklet+ black sleeve too! I found it kinda hard at the start but after grinding to level up buy better weapons and armour it's great. I like that they released it for GameBoy Advance along with all the sequel titles up to FFVI/6. FFIV[4] (3 in US on SNES) was my favorite and in my opinion one of the greatest oldschool RPGs out there along with Dragon Warrior, Dragon WarriorIII, Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals and this FF. Even among modern RPG type games. Final FantasyVI is amazing too, didnt get to beat it but got pretty far.

I did a playthrough with 3 and a warrior once, got a little tricky in the final push but as long as I had plenty of potions it was pretty doable

I knew this was gonna be a long video. Covering every nook and cranny of this OG Final Fantasy game was gonna take a while.
Get the steel armor in Melmond. It has the highest absorb percentage until you get the Opal/Dragon armor later in the game. It's expensive though.

Was always a bigger fan of 2/4 and not so much of 3/6. Couldn't get in to it as much.
FF6 on the SNES (III in the US) is my second favorite, only behind FF4 (II in the US).
The only reason we let the black belt come along is he brought 100G like everyone else and agreed to getting nothing. I about died

@@princesssprinklesthecat4192 yes so I can have ninja. In the long run my fighter becomes a knight which can use some white magic and the ninja can use some black magic. My fighter, thief. Bl mage and Wh mage set up actually works very well for me.

This game defined my childhood. I played it so much.
If anyone wants to undertake the original FF in its NES form and wants to enjoy all its challenges in its pristine form, and wants a recommendation on a starter party, you can’t go wrong with a fighter, white mage, and black mage to form the basis of your party. For the 4th character it can be just about anything, but with a F/WM/BM you already have a strong , well rounded party with access to all the spells in the game, the majority of the which will help you early and and very much throughout the game.
I’ve seen videos and have had discussions with others that the black belt is stronger than the fighter but from my understanding you’ll only reach that level of power when you max out at level 50.
For the most part you can beat the game by the time you’re lvl 32.
Personally i rarely used a red mage because not having access to all the spells and having a smaller MP pool and learning higher lvl spells slower was a big turn off. He’s much more useful early to mid-game, but i found him not that great late game.

Love this channel! My favorite NES game; beat it at least two dozen times but watching the entire video because my guy always has new secrets.
It’s a great game and a great walkthrough. Watching this brings back a lot of memories playing this game over and over with different parties as a kid. I found using 2 fighters and 2 black belts was the best party to easily beat the game.
Nowadays I feel like a mixed party is more fun to play (I like playing F/BB/WM/BM myself) just for the variety.
But in terms of just raw power I pretty much agree. I like having some mixture of Fighter/Black Belt for 3 of my member slots and then having the 4th slot be either a White Mage or Red Mage just for the support spells (EXIT is so nice to have in some of those later dungeons after the Volcano. And the FAST spell will allow your Fighters/Black Belts to utterly murder some of the bigger enemies).
The thief is a great character. He lets you pick and choose which battles you want to fight so you can spend more time fighting the lucrative ones while avoiding the less lucrative ones. You can actually level up faster by running. Also, the Luck stat is not bugged on the thief as long as he is in the first or second row.

I'm also curious, the game play footage that you share is that all yourself playing the games, or are you using someone else's game footage? ( Total respect regardless which way it is. ) I owned a NES as a kid and haven't played half of the games you've posted about let alone beaten the games.
And yes, the first turtles game is excruciatingly difficult, nor had I known anyone who'd beaten the game before. Bravo!

when i was a kid, as soon as you get the canoe, you can take a boat to the river north of the trials castle (rat tail castle), go from boat to canoe to land on the north shore and you can enter the trials castle super early and get light axes and a bunch of other powerful items long ahead of time.
If you're playing this game using a NES ROM I'll assume you've obtained legally, I very much recommend looking up the Final Fantasy 1 Randomizer for the website's ability to enable JUST "improved" vanilla patches to your ROM. Bugged spells work. Weapons that are strong against particular monsters actually work that way. All four characters can run. The thief isn't a loser. Characters will tell you if they can learn spells or use equipment in the shops. You can buy quantities of items. And you can see weapon stats before buying them. Stuff you can do in later games basically.

Hi! Great video! I myself am a long time veteren of Final Fantasy for the NES. The only thing I do differently when starting out with the Black Belt is that I actuially DO equip him with a set of Nunchucks, but then drop them when my hit power gets high enough when un equiping them. I tried starting out with him using only bare fists, but he just wasn't doin enough damage. Back in the 90s, I got him so powerful using only his punches, that I took out Chaos with one hit!
I had a lot of success with a party of two fighters and two red mages. This game was only $10 new at the end of the NES’s life cycle! Great video!
My favorite NES game and despite how many times I've beaten it, I'll never stop loving this game. I do want to somehow, someday get a sealed copy of this game.

Dude, I’ve never beaten this game because i get soo lost. Ty for the help man. Especially, with the monk and the diminishing returns on duplicate characters. Did kot know that. Bought the pixel remake yesterday and enjoying a masterpiece again.

I never had my entire team stunned, but that is an interesting condition for the whole team.
Long time veteran player of this game, I actually think the thief is legit good. Running is very useful early game when in dire straights, and is almost mandatory for the ice cave level. When upgraded to ninja, he gives you another class with the "fast" spell, which is a huge deal at endgame. Lastly, his ability to usually attack earliest is nice when you give him "free" magic spell use items, particularly the healing ones. As a combatant he is more in line with red mage if slightly better, and in the early game thief and red mage aren't too far behind fighter in damage. I think the utility and quality of life makes thief the best 4th option over black mage, a class that is a little redundant with red mage and noticeably declines late in the late game.

I believe you can make money real early real quick in the game by doing a boat trick that involves saving and getting the first encounter on the boat. It works only with the NES version, but if you save, hop on the boat, the first encounter will always be the Kyzoku which are big money mobs. Easiest to do it at Corneria since its cheap. It might require a restart, but its a means to manipulate the spawn. Try it sometime.

My first RPG was Dragon Warrior for the NES, but Final Fantasy was the very first game I purchased for a console. I loved this game on that christmas, I was 11 or 12, about 30 years ago. And of course I later purchased FFII and FFIII for the SNES.
So here's another thing you missed.

When choosing characters, the thief is not as useless as you think. Each time you run, the character that you pick to have run has their speed / evade checked against the character 2 slots below them. So if your fighter runs, and below him you have black belt, then red mage, then black mage, it means your fighter's stats are checked against the red mage's stats to see if running will be successful. In this case, it usually won't be. And because of the way you intuitively order your characters, it's often the case that you won't have a good chance of running.

Their has a major boost on these stats. If you're deep in a dungeon, and you really need to get OUT, and you have theif and fighter in your party, you can put the thief as leader and your fighter 2 slots down, and you should be able to run from every battle. Of course you don't really need to do this either, since thief's run-chance stats are better than everyone else's, he can help the party run no matter where you put him.

Now you might ask, what about the last 2 characters? There's no one 2 slots below them, so what are they checked against? The game checks them against a RNG (random number generator). So if thief is in the last two slots, it's not clear if he'll be able to run since it's random. But if there's a slow poke 2 slots below him, you'll run nearly every time.

Anyway that's the real use of thief. You can go deep into dungeons, get tons of treasure, then get out by avoiding all the monsters... kinda what you'd imagine a thief actually doing.
Nah the thief is garbage. Best setup is 2 fighters a black belt and a red mage.
It always bothered me if all four of my party members didn't have exactly the same experience point total, so I would always save and reload outside the Northwest Castle until Astos's RUB spell failed, LOL. Great playthough, and very informative.
The left side screen info is why I come to this channel over ones like Sakyomog, who play like Gods and never miss. It’s real, and it’s a way better way to gauge what you’ll ACTUALLY NEED here or there. Just because the guy I’m watching can finish the game without ever using a Potion, doesn’t mean I can. I've played through this game so many time, my favorite unique party was 2 Black Belts and 2 Red Mages, a bit of a struggle to start but by end game they're an absolute offensive force.
I come for the intros, history and culture, I stay for the gameplay and good background noise to study to.

I bought this at a Micro Play store. In box with booklet+ black sleeve too! I found it kinda hard at the start but after grinding to level up buy better weapons and armour it's great.
I like that they released it for GameBoy Advance along with all the sequel titles up to FFVI/6.
FFIV[4] (3 in US on SNES) was my favorite and in my opinion one of the greatest oldschool RPGs out there along with Dragon Warrior, Dragon WarriorIII, Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals and this FF. Even among modern RPG type games. Final FantasyVI is amazing too, didnt get to beat it but got pretty far.
Ive beaten this game three times. Had a white mage and thief in one run and two red mages in another. This video probably has the most powerful group.
