    Episode 52
Most of the time when you'd beat a game on the NES, that was all there was. A few games added extra challenging modes, but for the most part these were just minor variations to the original. Super Mario Bros substituted some enemies, and Ghost N' Goblins instated that you replay it a second time.
The Legend of Zelda wasn't like those at all - Once you complete the game, the developers included an all new Second Quest! The dungeons were completely new, the overworld had a new layout, there were new enemies, and even a new dungeon mechanic that lets Link walk through walls!
Adding this much extra content was practically unheard of at the time, but Nintendo was known for going above and beyond. So what is this Second Quest all about, and what if you've already played the first quest years ago, but don't have a save file ready to play the second quest now? in today's episode we'll find out, and then we'll dive deep into Zelda's rarely seen Second Quest where we'll learn:
    * Where are all of the NEW dungeons?
    * The SECRET to starting the Second Quest with Bombs!
    * How to find EVERY item and upgrade!
    * SECRETS of the RECORDER - It works differently in the Second Quest!
    * Get TONS OF RUPEES - Find ALL of the HIDDEN caches!
    * The best way to NAVIGATE the new Overworld!
    * Where to find EVERY HEART CONTAINER - Max out your Health!
    * Secrets of the Second Quest's POWER BRACELET - It's mandatory this time!
    * DATA on all of the Second Quest's ENEMIES with item drop tables!
    * How to SHORTEN THE FUSE of your BOMBS for precision accuracy!
    * The Roocorder GLITCH - How to do it!
    * Where to get the BEST DEALS at stores in the Second Quest - Save your hard earned Rupees!
    * How to deal with the dreaded RED BUBBLES!
    * Where to find the MAGICAL SWORD this time - its not in the same place!
    * How to cheat at the GAMBLING GAME and GET RICH!
    * The SECRET to passing the "Grumble Grumble" guy WITHOUT giving up your Bait!
    * How to defeat EVERY BOSS... even Ganon, AGAIN!
    Thanks for watching!
THE LEVEL 6 MAP: I forgot to get the level 6 map in the video, so if you're looking for it: Go UP 2 screens from the starting point and BOMB the TOP WALL to get to the next room. From here go LEFT 1 screen and defeat all of the enemies to get the map. The room you're looking for has a rectangular river of red water (blood), and this is the only room in the dungeon that looks this way. Hope that helps!

For some reason this reminded me of the scene in The Wizard where Beau Bridges is *playing* Zelda 2 [I think? It was audio only and my memory is shredded by bong resin] but he’s mashing the buttons in such an awkward way that didn’t correlate whatsoever with what a human being would do with a controller.

Oh man my dad was the same! He never recorded his runs but he loved playing through the first two Zelda games. I think he figured out the Shadow Link crouch in the corner trick before it was even common knowledge. He never touched another video game since then sadly.

God the second quest of Zelda. You never know just how much Nintendo's designers were holding back in their other games until you see what they produce when the gloves are off. Those money-or-life rooms are diabolical.

Technically Zelda II does have a 2nd quest but it falls far below the bar set by its predecessor. You still get the raised sword Icon by your name file and everything. You start off with all the spells you learned and the levels you had when you beat the game. Otherwise, is basically the same game again. Maybe it's more like a New Game+ than a second quest now that I think about it.

Hot too for second quest: you can sneak into Level-6 to get the ladder early. It’ll give you that heart container on the east coast, and get you the magic sword before level 5. The ladder and the sword make level 5 WAY easier.

It works roughly the same way as despawning the locked door in the opening room of the first dungeon in the first quest. After using the recorder only defeat one of the mini eyes, then walk out of the room and back in. That will despawn all the remaining mini eyes and because one mini eye was destroyed the game will be tricked into counting Digdogger as defeated and will not respawn the larger version.

So many new things Ito try next time I play. There is one thing I do to make the midgame easier. When you are in the graveyard grinding rupees before Level 4, grab the stepladder from level 6. It is pretty easy to get to from the entrance though it does cost a key. It makes navigating much easier(especially level 4) and you get a heart container on the pier with that and the HC that can be gotten with the raft, the best sword is available after level 4.

Whoa..coincidence! I'm in the middle of playing through the 2nd quest on my switch right now. I remember only being able to find dungeons 1-3 back in the day but the internet wasn't a thing soooo 30 years later I'm finally gonna beat it!. Great guide!

My brother and I called the Nintendo hot line in Redmond WA so much that my Mom made us do crazy extra chores for punishment when she found out. Finding the raft was one of those calls. So sneaky. We made our own maps on grid paper so we wouldn't forget what we checked and didn't check in every room. Did the same for Metroid and lots of games actually!

I first beat this game when I was 7 years old, now 37 years later I've finally beaten the second quest. It was like getting to play the legend of Zelda for the first time again and it's largely thanks to You Can Beat Video Games! I always thought the second quest was just the first quest with everything moved around, I had no idea until I started watching this video, you've basically doubled how much I love my favorite game. Thank you so much!

I was definitely one of those kids who didn't know about the Second Quest. I remember working together with my friend to complete the game on her dad's NES, we even bought one of those posterboards you get for school projects and used it to map out Hyrule. So it's been fun to see what I missed out on!
Thanks for all your hard work.

Hands up if you still have your original graph paper map of both quests in this game. I remember painfully mapping this out by memory until my parents bought me the "Win At Video Games" book that listed the points of interest on the map. You know. Before the days of the internet, we had to either take a notebook into the book store or hope the local library has a copy of it, which was rare.

For some more advanced second quest strats. The stepladder is easy enough to get from level 6 you could get it after level 2/3 once you have the recorder. Then just go straight to level 8 which is surprisingly easy for the second quest and unlike the other late dungeons doesn't require the bow. Just the bombs and recorder. so you can get the magic key and rod before doing levels 4-7 to help with the red bubbles.

This was wonderful to watch, and the voice of the narrator was so calming and knowledgeable. Thanks for showing me the end of Zelda 1 second run. I remeber first beating Zelda when I was very young, and in grade school hearing about a second adventure in LoZ. Course when I got home I entered Zelda as the name and played and I remember being super lost after the first dungeon.

I remember the first time my sister tried to play the second quest. SHe evidently missed the message about how another quest would start from here, so a while later she actually started playing it and thought the Nintendo was messed up because things weren't where she remembered them, so she eliminated the character. This game did so many things right and inspired so many other action adventure rpg games that tried to mimic even a fraction of its grandeur (sorry I couldn't resist an Invincible reference). It is the one of many reasons I have been a Zelda fan my entire life. The level of polish was unsurpassed and this was only the first/second adventure we shared with Link throughout the years. This was a wonderful look back at my childhood and I just recently found my own copy of this legendary video game in my garage. Thank you YCBVG for taking us back to those halcyon days. Game on friend!

I gotta say back in late 01 when I was nostalgic for Zelda 1. I played the second quest like crazy. I made it through the first 5 dungeons and I did find the raft. But I never figured out you had to play the '' the whistle'' in the cemetery to get to level 6. I did actually find level 7 by accident. Never went through it though. And I never found level 8 either. And honestly, I would have never found level 9 either.

After all these years, I had no idea whatsoever that you could use the water of life to cure yourself from the red bubble attacks until I watched this! I actually just picked up the game just to get a screenshot of the old man who says “Ones who does not have triforce can’t go in”, and then just kept playing, 1st and 2nd. Then after that, I watched this, since I’d never really seen anything like it, and based on your other videos I knew it’d be an excellent guide-and it was!
