This is the best SNES game I found in my adulthood. I wonder what an amazingly diverse and fun library we would have if more snes games were produced by good companies in the late 90s and early 00s. DK series was just the tip of the iceberg of what we could get in the 16 bits era. I really think it died too soon far away from its full potential.
I saw the anime a million years ago, and boy was it funny. I never knew they made a game about it. I am glad I ran into your channel man, you have amazing content.
+vdogaymer Since you've seen the anime multiple times, I was wondering if Flute wore any costumes in that.I knew she wore a couple in the OVA, but I think I recall that the anime series is a bit different than the manga.
@@e-mananimates2274 they probably mean the OVA. the anime series is only funny if you enjoy trainwrecks. It took the character names and designs and completely changed their personalities and the plot into some wannabe shakespearean tragedy. It would have been better as an original IP...

@@e-mananimates2274 the real tragedy of the anime is that they tried so hard to be dramatic and serious but their darkest and most somber moments did not hold a candle to the manga's equivalent. The manga went HARD. Underage prince being tortured and killed on the battlefield? You get a play-by-play with no censoring. Mother and child being lynched by a bigoted, paranoid mob? The anime had the original scene right there to use as a basis and it STILL pussied out. In trying to paint the story with a "mature" coat they just sandpapered all its edges into a bland, inoffensive shape. I've been a fan for 20 years and I have, uh, *many* thoughts on the matter.
The game is actually based on German folklore about a rat catcher who lured rats out of the Northern German city of Hameln (English: Hamelin) using his flute. After not getting paid for his work he took revenge by luring the kids out of the city and later got paid in double for his original job.
In English we know this story as well, and most know it by the name "The Pied Piper". Though most people don't seem to know the dark twist at the end, they just know the part about a guy who lures rats away with music... Those Germans sure do love horrible things happening to kids in their fairy tales
@@chompythebeast We love horrible things happening to any- and everyone. Please understand that we are not evil by choice. It's just how we were designed. Cheers.
The manga series this game was based on was hilariously fantastic. The main character Hameln is a selfish asshole, who only thinks of himself and money. His sidekick, the crow, is the only one with a true heart, and keeps Hameln in check by beating the shit out of him.
@@Soft-Shell No. This game was developed by Enix. Kirby's Dream Land 2 was developed by HAL Laboratory. Interestingly they both came out the same year (1995), Kirby's Dream Land 2 came out in March and this game in September so it's quite possible it was 'inspired' by it.
The manga this game is based on has been fan-translated years ago and is really good and hilarious, although towards the end it changes to a more serious plot. Totally recommended.
This may be obvious, but the manga this game is based on appears to be itself based on the German fairy tale "Der Rattenfänger von Hameln" (The Pied Piper of Hamelin). It's about the town Hamelin, i.e. Hameln, a real German town in Lower Saxony. In the tale it is plagued by rats, so they employ a professional rat catcher. He plays a flute and all the rats follow him out of town, ending the rat plague. Thinking this was too easy, the people of Hameln decide not to pay him. As revenge he plays his flute again, but this time the children of Hameln follow him out of town. So they got rid of the rats, but also lost their kids. I didn't know this was adapted as a Japanese manga! Though it appears to be a very loose adaption.
I found this game in a pack of Roms translated to portuguese (I am from Brazil) and added it to my Snes Classic. I actually feel bad by how much the violinist is mean to Flute LOL
Agreed, one of the best SNES cames that never left Japan and it's quite cheap. But yeah, I had to pause it, go eat dinner, and come back to complete it.
it is a preposition in Japanese. It can mean multiple things like 'of' or 'my'. In this case it means Violinist OF Hamelin. I'm not sure what the Hiki means. I'm guessing it is the '-ist' part of violinist.
@@jaymethysell5111 www.linguee.com/japanese-english/translation/%E5%BC%BE%E3%81%8D.html hiki means player (of an instrument). Zelda no densetsu can either be translated as "Legend of Zelda" or "Zelda's Legend", which actually mean the same thing, one just sounds cooler so we translate it that way.
Anita Sarkeesian would cream herself over this game. English translation available for this btw. Going to pop this into my Everdrive and give it a play.
Well it turns me off too to be honest as a feminist gamer. I respect the artstyle and expressiveness but I prefer a game like Musical Pop'n for SNES since I can get different power ups via neat exploration of the levels. I'm pretty into that more so.
I prefer it because instead of beating a female character up for laughs I get to play one (which is less common) and just explore levels and gain power ups. There's nothing wrong with preferring a female character either. I've already played as plenty of male characters. Astro Boy (Astro Boy Omega Factor), Mario, Mega Man, Simon Belmont, Shulk, Donkey Kong, Cloud Strife, etc etc. Actually pretty excited to have found games like Alisia Dragoon, Sailor Moon Another Story, Advanced Busterhawk Gleylancer, Twinkle Tale, Trouble Shooter, Eternal Filena, and couple more titles I never heard of. It's cool.
it's a running gag in the manga that his violin is more like a cello which mysteriously plays in a violin range, and that no sane human would play it over the shoulder like he does.
I respect this game's artstyle and expressiveness but I'm not into the poor kid getting abused as the core humor. I'll skip the title. I'm super into Musical Pop'n which is another anime style game on snes. I'm really digging it.
I have played a bit and I can't think of a darkest game. I would not let a kid play this game. The dialogs are especially brutal. The whole casualness of it all makes it even darker. The mechanics of the game and the level design are very good tho. Magical Pop'n is a very cute and visually pleasing game but it's much simpler in terms of mechanics and level depth imo.
1:16 That looks exactly like when Kirby is inside the fish in Kirby's Dream Land 2 LOL

Hamelin the Violin Player. We digging up the throwback videos now.
And it has a working translation now :D
The manga this is based on is incredibly funny (and somewhat dark towards the end).

That fish costume for flute made me go look up the developer. It's a dead ringer for kine the fish in Kirby's dreamland 2. Nice one as usual man!
Agreed. made me do a double take!
+Game vs Game Believe it or not, that's an actual species of fish, called a Mola Mola or Ocean Sunfish. Very strange and endearing.
Yeah, and also don't forget Manbo from Link's Awakening. Seemed to be a slight obsession with that fish with Nintendo games of the early 90s.
So was it the same developer?

"Oversized violin" Sooo a cello?
According to others here, it's a running gag of the series that his violin is cello sized but still sounds like a violin
So apparently it got an anime release too based on the manga
Domestic Violence: The Game
maybe gender violence. They dont seem to cohabitate in a common home
That is a pretty over-the-top hilarious username and pfp lol, makes for good parody
Anyone know if there is an english patch for this game?
This looks like how the anime would play out... I'm going to have to check this Classic out 4sho!
Can anyone say how there is called The Nutcracker's music?
I am going to speedrun this game.

the level design looks very similar to megaman
