You're 100% right about the devs not really caring about this game. The dog's name is actually Jonah, but that somehow got completely ignored by them. Doesn't even show up in the manual. That said, you also taught ME something in turn. How the heck was the show a Steven Spielberg/Tim Burton collab, yet still THAT BAD?
Even crazier is that the ‘pilot’ (I guess? I’m not really sure what’s the right term for an episode from an anthology series that kicks off its own separate series) was written by Brad Bird, and besides the third act it’s still mostly terrible. I have no clue why Family Dog was such a black hole for massive talent, it’s like the inversion of monkeys typing out Shakespeare.
I have a core memory tied to this game. When I was like 4 my parents left me home alone for the first time. My dad told me he would lock the door and be back soon, but I wasn't listened because I was playing family fucking dog. Well like 15 minutes later I was bored, so I went outside. When I wanted to go back inside I found the door was locked and freaked out. I was only 5, I was home alone and locked out. It was a nice day, so it wasn't awful. I went to my neighbors house and jumped down their stairs until my dad came home. I refused to play family dog after that because of the trauma lol, it scared me. We returned it to blockbuster and life went on. Thanks everyone.
They left u home alone for a whole year!? (U said u were 4 when they left but 5 when u got locked out lmao) Also, a 4 or 5 year old should absolutely never be left home alone, wtf!?
Family Dog began as a short on Amazing Stories, and was one of the most popular episodes. That's what lead to the series getting green-lit, and the game going into development.
@CSGraves i was eight or nine when the original episode came out, and like you, I taped it and watched it a bunch of times. Fortunately, I've forgotten everything about the 1993 series, so I can remember the 1987 episode with fondness instead of the pile of dung that happened six years later.
The proportions of the car compared to the dog and driver at 4:07 are absolutely insane, why are they seemingly driving a pair of conjoined plymouth superbirds
The most amazing thing I can take from this video is being reminded of that "Capital Critters" was a thing. I don't really remember it, but I do have a vague memory of watching it at my grandmother's house.

Swamp Thing on NES is based off of a cartoon that only ran for 4 episodes. Family Dog is probably second place for the shortest lived TV series to receive a video game.

"... But THE DOG WAS HERE! Weren't you!" My dad taped the very first episode back in the day. No idea it even had any other episodes or even a video game.
That dog character is an invention of Tim Burton. His was reused for the 2012 animated movie Frankenweenie, which itself was a remake of a live action short film Tim Burton directed. I always wondered how Family Dog failed so hard. It had such a good crew behind it.
I've never heard of 'Family Dog' (the video game or show). But after looking it up... No wonder Tim Burton was executive producer. The dog looks like Frankenweenie.
Don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but some of the hype was due to the Family Dog shorts that were aired on the old Spielberg show Amazing Stores. Those shorts were done by Bird (music by Danny Elfman too!) and based off animation design by Tim Burton. This would have been 86? 87? Also the doggo had a name in that; Jonah. There are three of them if I'm remembering correctly and all were pretty legit in both concept and animation. The tv show came much later and other than being produced by Burton and Spielberg, no one else involved with the very successful shorts were involved. In fact, Bird didn't get involved because he couldn't fathom how to make a good/successful episodic tv series based off the original shorts. Even the animation studio was different.

YAAAY! BONUS DOGS! Boo for the whole Family Dog fiasco. The very first episode was actually an episode of Spielberg's Amazing Stories in '87 and was hilarious. Everyone talked about it and rumors circulated that it would be a primetime series. But it seems like they just weren't convinced they could get the ratings and just let it languish. Then the Simpsons came along and showed that a primetime cartoon actually could get ratings. They rooted around for whatever they had in the ideas pile and squeezed this show out. Not only was its buzz wasted by having it come out FIVE YEARS after that initial episode on Amazing Stories, but they made it unapologetically a kids' show. But that's not a mistake exclusive to this. All of those shows you mentioned were kids shows where they aired it in primetime and added in a couple of "damn"s and "hell"s to make it for grown-ups too. Because that's all the Simpsons did, right? That means our show is gonna be a hit too, right?

To be fair, ONE positive about this game aside from the cute-ish dog sprites? Made someone stick to asking for a review from you for a decade, no? Dedication like that is rare.
I remember all those Simpsons wannabes from the early '90s. "Family Dog" was a particularly egregious example, because it had a lot of hype (and they threw Spielberg's name around a LOT when talking about it) but no legs when it actually made it on the air. The people who made it didn't seem to understand that you can't have an entire series based on one joke and expect it to last past the first episode. Fun fact: it started as an entry on Spielberg's anthology series "Amazing Stories," and apparently fell victim to the "this-is-popular-let's-make-it-into-a-spin-off" fever that was rampant back then.
I’ve never heard of this game or cartoon but apparently it ran from June to July 1993 and everyone hated it. And the dog was named Jonah according to Wikipedia! I will now never think of Family Dog again!
Good video! Thanks, Drunk, for unlocking a core memory of awful animated shows like Family Dog and Capital Critters. 😅 Yeah, it seemed everyone and their grandmother wanted to capitalize on the success of an animated prime time show like the Simpsons in the '90s. Duckman and The Critic were actually really good shows, though. It is weird they even bothered with a Family Dog game. In the words of Jay Sherman, "It stinks!"
I remember nearly every animated cartoon for adults in the 90s and early 2000s seem to fail badly, even when they were promoted well. I remember The Critic seemed to last a little longer than the others, but not by much.
I'd known of Family Dog because of the Spielberg/Burton connection, but had never heard of either Capitol Critters or Fish Police. Might check them out just for curiosity sake.
Often when I get asked “what is a terrible game for ‘blank’ system” I often reply “90% of any game based off a movie/show franchise” and this is a shiny example of that! A simple attempt at a cash grab where the developer didn’t even care too much. Sure someone put some love into making sure it LOOKED the part, but no one cared t make sure it had decent gameplay
I remember Family Dog being part of a Late-Night show... Amazing Stories or SOMETHING... It was a WEIRD THING to have amidst all those horror stories... BUT THAT'S WHY IT'S SO MEMORABLE!!! Scary stories with a Dog Cartoon tossed in! Excellent video!😁👍
Fun Fact: According to Wikipedia, the Dog character in the “Family Dog” Cartoon actually has a name. His name is Jonah, but for some reason, it was never mentioned in the show.
The bonus dogs at the end were better than the game itself
I thought so too😅
It's offensive to even suggest it could be otherwise

Executive: won’t it be kinda hard to make a game based on a show that’s already cancelled?
Pitch guy: Actually it’s gonna be super easy, barely an inconvenience.
To be fair, ONE positive about this game aside from the cute-ish dog sprites? Made someone stick to asking for a review from you for a decade, no? Dedication like that is rare.
I mean .. at least the dog spite is good and it has good animations. So that's something.
Oh HELL yeah
Hell yeah!
The dog sprites are kind of the best, honestly. Too bad they couldn't be in a better game.
man this unlocked a deeply hidden memory lol
The Bonus Dogs mini game looked good.
"Nintendo tape". Dear God I remember that 🙄
"History is doomed to repeat itself...and I hope you have a great rest of your day!' -SNES drunk
I never saw the show this is based on, but I knew of its existence. I'm glad I did not waste my time watching it
"Ohhhh, making licensed Nintendo tapes is TIGHT!"
Much love to the bonus dogs.
Thanks for that bonus, you should add more cameos like that
Where's the 'Clyde the Dog' AAA platformer?!
Clyde the Dog walking simulator! SNES Stranding.
I used to rent this game from my local Blockbuster video. Along with Earthworm Jim, I used to re-rent this more than most.
I actually had this game and watched the cartoon as a kid. The cartoon was okay and the game was NOT easy.
After hearing Tim Burton being attached to this, I was thinking the whole time, that looks a lot like Frankenweenie
The kid looks like Chuckie (I think)
Watching Pitch Meetings is TIGHT
Yeah, great and underrated short-lived cartoon series, not-so-great game.
3:21 JESUS THAT BACKGROUND
I'd play "Bonus Dogs" much rather than Family Dog
One of the bonus dogs has a fluffy tail!
One of the rare games mentioned on SNES drunk that I have played that I wholly agree with the review on. You hit the nail on the head
Fun Fact: According to Wikipedia, the Dog character in the “Family Dog” Cartoon actually has a name. His name is Jonah, but for some reason, it was never mentioned in the show.
I remember hating the show because the Family treated the dog like garbage and the dog was so loyal to them, which was the point of the show.
NES and SNES era licensed video game IPs are many times truly baffling :D
