Just one kick note: Kouta Azuma becomes Fighter Roar when the events of SRW OG Gaiden take place. The Fighter Roar that appears in the Great Battle games is a ciborg created by Dark Brain who rebelled against him and while pursuimg Dark Brain, he crossed over to the SRW OG universe, losing his physical body in the process. That's when he merges with Kouta, allowing him to turn into Fighter Roar
Some interesting bits (1) The Gundams here actually their respective pilots wearing powered armors based on their respective mobile suits, for example. Gundam F91=Seabook, V2 Gundam=Uso, God/Burning Gundam=Domon. (2) The rather thin plot of these games ended up being very important in Super Robot Wars OG The Moon Dwellers.
Actually, even before Moon Dwellers. Fighter Roar and his villain, Dark Brain were both in SRW OG Gaiden and Roar has been an important character ever since.
Great timing...I literally just started playing _Great battle IV_ two days ago, and I'm thoroughly enjoying myself. Years ago I came across a GBC game called _Super Robot Pinball_ ,which is a spin-off of this series that even features Evangelion, Mazinger Z, and Getter Robo to name a few. Crazy franchise mash-ups that don't sacrifice quality game play for the novelty!
Not so much a spinoff of *this* series, but it is a spinoff of Super Robot Wars, which is another great turn-based strategy series you should definitely check out if you're a fan.
Very nice overview. A friend recommended the first one, so I've played it. I recall that you've mentioned some of these in your import videos and I've since briefly sampled each one. It's a cool series with good production values. The fourth made an impressive first impression. The first mech fight was a jarring surprise, though. This series looks like it's my style as I tend to like less popular, obscure games on the SNES over the popular stuff. This video gave me a better idea of what to expect when I get a chance to play them properly. Great work on this video. I like your style.
It's also worth noticing that Great Battle is canon within the Super Robot Wars: Original Generation series, since Fighter Roar (now known as Warrior Roar) goes to the OG world, finds a different Kouta Azuma, becomes his spiritual guide and helps him fight Dark Brain's forces in the brand spanking new Compatible Kaiser. So technically, SRW: OG Gaiden is a sequel to the series.
If this is a BanPresto game it is likely way it didn't come over. That company makes super mash-up games even to this day, including the very long running Super Robot Wars series. Most of the Super Robot Wars never hit North America because of all the different licenced anime content in them.
Chase Strolenberg They are starting to get English subtitle releases because of Hong Kong and the other English speaking Asian countries that Japan sells to.
Great video, as always! soooooooooo you should tackle the super robot taisen series. It's also made by Banpresto, and it's a tactical strategy game series with mechs from a ton of anime!
They made A LOT of those games, Soccer, Dodgeball, racing, baseball.... and even Pachinko ! Also there are some spin-offs like The Great Battle Gaiden series and RPG :-)
The Great Battle IV is awesome! Picked it up at a favorite local retro shop, mainly because it had a Gundam on it. I've been hoping to play it in one of our future videos (perhaps after Halloween time passes, since we gotta show love to spooky movies and games first).
@@fidelsolis6070 Actually, you can use an American SNES, but you'd have to break the two small, plastic tabs inside the place where you insert cartridges (they're just behind and to the sides of the pin connector). I didn't want to break anything on my SNES, so the alternative I use is a SNES Game Genie with those two tabs broken off (or ground down). I feel better doing that on a cheaper piece of hardware like the Game Genie. The SNES's region locking is all physical, nothing related to any chips or electronics (same with the N64).
Awesome video!! I've had these games for a few years now and I've been waiting for someone to review and hear their thoughts on them. I absolutely agree that the last 2 games are the must plays. You should cover Ushio to Tora for the super famicom. It's a decent game and it's not expensive! Haha. Keep up the great work!
Interesting games, I'm not into the mentioned series, so I never heard about those games. The first one looks like it plays similar to Pocky and Rocky, I'll give it a try!
It does seem that way, because I did forget, and you're the first person that pointed it out. Scroll to "Compatible Kaiser" gamefaqs.gamespot.com/snes/571200-the-great-battle-iv/faqs/58827
This is what happens in Japan, when a major toy company holds all your toy production rights (and in fact owns 100% at least one of these franchises) they go to the others and say ask 'Hey we need money, can we use your characters and split the profits'? And the other companies say "Sure go ahead". You will NEVER see this kind of thing going on anywhere else in the world. Its nice to see this level of camaraderie between companies, though again it helps if the same toy company owns the rights to produce toys of all of these franchises. Only in Japan. :)
Thnx SNES Drunk!! This series is part of my collection because of you. I ordered the whole series by a tech guy I know who made the Great Battle games for me out of my crappy SNES sports games. I call it transgender carts: They were born as a crappy sport game to transform in an epic must have game!!
A lot of games were not released in certain regions simply because they did not think the games would sell well enough to justify the localization costs, marketing budget and all that stuff. In the case of these, I guess a big reason might be the characters. They were simply not very well known in the west. They were not completely unknown, but they were not so famous that it would help move a lot of units.
I think this series would have done better than that not so great ultraman fighting game we got in the USA lol They are really fun games we missed out on.
Why is Japan the only country that makes big mashups of its various totally-unconnected IPs like this? Can you imagine if someone made a game where Harry Potter, Clarissa Fray and Percy Jackson all teamed up to wage war on the Sabbat while trying to maintain the uneasy peace with the Camarilla?
Japan are culturally, artistically and intellectually superior and therefore able to make these concoctions in earnest where others might pretentiously attempt something along the same lines but flounder among predictable, trite, materialistic, sellout guff without ever appreciating the vast gulf between their meagre output and their obvious superiors.
There's a game that I forgot the title. Can you help me find it. I played it one time at a friend's house. It's Super Nintendo it's a turn based RPG. I believe there was seven Heroes could have been more. You pick one you play his story line or hers or it's. Then you picked another one's and play their story line until you did all of them's storyline. And then you play as a group and finish the game. That is what my friend told me about it it was over 250 hours worth of gameplay he said. He would not let me borrow it but I did get to play it one day. I remember a furball type character a little alien animal. A robot and a guy who had a sword I believe and his name was hero. I played him I believe it opened with him driving a car and being in an accident and then you fought the bad guys who caused it. Sorry that's all I can remember
Most of your description bears a strong resemblance to The 7th Saga - it's for the SNES; it's a turn based RPG; there's seven playable characters to choose from, including an alien and a robot. It's been quite a long time since I last played it, but I don't remember having to do each of their storylines so they unite as a group to finish the game - you might be confusing it with Octopath Traveller there. They also don't have completely separate storylines either, as the main objective remains the same (instead, it mainly affects who you fight and where). You are also able to recruit some of the others (I think you can only recruit one?) later in the game to join your party. I don't remember anything about a car accident either, so you're probably confusing it with something else entirely there. I hope that helps!
But Gundam isn't a superhero... Characters from Ultraman & Kamen Rider are but Gundam/Mobile Suits are mecha. Not sure about that fourth character... He looks like a Gundam but dressed/styled after a hero of sorts. That blue hair gives me Goemon vibes.
I guess you didn't find the motivation to play the first game of the series. You would have find out that you rescue a new hero at every boss fight and end up with 5 heroes to control instead of 3 ;-)
Just one kick note: Kouta Azuma becomes Fighter Roar when the events of SRW OG Gaiden take place. The Fighter Roar that appears in the Great Battle games is a ciborg created by Dark Brain who rebelled against him and while pursuimg Dark Brain, he crossed over to the SRW OG universe, losing his physical body in the process. Fun Fact: There is a soccer game on the Super Famicom featuring Gundam, Ultraman and Kamen Rider that also includes Godzilla characters.

There are a lot of sport games with them. I know there is dodgeball too.
I was just gonna mention that one, Battle Dodgeball

This is exactly what I wanted to say so +1 to your 5 year old comment 😉
You are the best SNES channel on UA-cam. I must have 20 super famicom games on my classic bases entirely on your recommendations.
You can see the progression of competence in the developers.
Your videos have shown me tons of Japanese games to load on my everdrive

Dido for my SNES Classic.

It'll likely be part of a Super Famicom RPG video, the 4th SFC game doesn't have a finished translation yet however
These games have English patches now for anyone interested. They are available on romhacking.net.
NES has some tittles too, sd hero soukessen taose aku no gundan is a great plataform game.
Awesome. I loved Great Battle IV but couldn't figure out the mech battles and then gave up. Will try again with that list.
I remember seeing Great Battle import toys back in the 90s at a comic shop. It blew my mind!! I was like "these guys look awesome!! I want them!!"
I was never aware of this gem series, thanks for showing this.

oh wow ive seen quite a few carts of this series at various retro shops around Tokyo but never picked it up. i may just grab one of them next time!
Wow, I had no idea these games were any good. What a truly hidden gem! Soooo many gems on SNES.
Ultraman Towards the Future and it's SFC exclusive sequel Ultra Seven might make an interesting video.
Yeah, I've heard of these, IV and V definitely seem worth the go. Good picks, too bad they didn't come over.
The Great Battle IV is awesome! Picked it up at a favorite local retro shop, mainly because it had a Gundam on it. I've been hoping to play it in one of our future videos (perhaps after Halloween time passes, since we gotta show love to spooky movies and games first).
But how can I played them. U need a new retro duo console or a Super Fanicom

Finally a awesome review of this game
I picked these up based on your recommendation awhile back. I still haven't found 5 though.
Wonder if the Gundam SD anime was tied in with these games. Pretty cool, def one ill have to check out
I'll have to check out these games. They look fun.
Actually Ultraman is like1 to 2 buildings high, a gundam is lke 20 meters high, and a kamen rider is human size.

the lil bug character is masked rider
