@@SodaCanTabletThe Japanese version also has genuine arcade controls and a special port for a wireless adapter. Weirdly enough, the batteries go into the stick and not the wireless adapter. The American version has a blanking plate where the battery door would be. My first SNES stick was the awful Quickshot followed by the Fighter Stick SN. Fighter Stick SN was basically a Super Advantage with the proper layout.
OHHHH holy crap that makes a lot of sense. I saw the blank plates for the battery and wireless adapters and I was wondering what they were. Thank you for letting me know about that. I've seen the Quickshot does not look good at all. I've seen the Fighter Stick SN too and I like that it at least has proper button placements.
Man im so glad the algorithm recommended your channel! I really love your style. I love how everything is just very personable laid-back. Kind of gives me that vibe of when you visit a friend's house and you're just hanging out. Im definitely subscribing have a great day!
First of all....YES with your hair! 🤘🏻 As someone who grew up with the SUPER Advantage...it was all I knew and I made it work for me. U.K. was lucky to get the much improved Score Master fight stick! Later in life, I modded my SUPER Advantage with Sanwa buttons and I microswitched the stick. As a North American boy, ball tops are okay, but I'm bat top all the way and fortunately most of fight sticks of the era can have their tops swapped out for a bat! Great Job on the DIY sticks you created. Many people go crazy with sticks, but I'm much more impressed when people "re-create" existing sticks from the past. Great video and...Great Job!
HAHA thank you. I think I was spoiled from using the HORI RAP4 as my first stick because I don't think I can get used to the Super Advantage. And that's so cool you modded your Super Advantage! Do you still have it? I love that controllers have regional preference to them. It's really interesting. I noticed in your previous comments that you wrote some Korean too, so I wonder if that also adds to your preference for bat tops haha. And thank you yeah I love being able to recreate stuff from the past because it's almost like you're traveling through time to experience how things used to be. Thank you for the support! I always appreciate and enjoy reading your detailed comments.
@SodaCanTablet Yes! I still have the modded SUPER Advantage as well as a duplicate to keep as stock/OEM. And yes as it pertains to Korean!! My fiancée is Korean so I've learned the language for her and her family! I noticed your rice cooker in a prior video too..haha! Their sticks (levers) are fantastic! Years ago there was a "re-release" of the SNES Score Master rebranded as "Emio Edge SUPER Joystck" fir the Super NES mini (They released an NES variant too). Modded it with sanwa buttons and a "Samducksa 309 Crown" and couldn't be happier! Thank your for appreciating my comments! I'm not one to leave short 1~2 sentence comments. It's too "robotic " to me. Your content is great and very organic. Work at your own pace and have fun. Those of us that enjoy it...will always stick around with praise and support! 화이팅~~!!
Ohh congrats on the engagement! I didn't think the Super Advantage had enough space in it to be modified so that's really cool. I haven't used Samducksa sticks before, but a controller I built for a friend used Sanducksa buttons and those were really nice. I saw the Emio stick before it looks really cool! I really like that they use good parts. Kind of surreal in a way to see the retro styling and the modern buttons, but it looks good. And thank you! I will always appreciate all the support. :^) ( `・ω・´)9
@SodaCanTablet Thanks! 😅 Long story short-ish...nothing was just plug and play and swappable. I had to sand out the button holes to 24mm. Then after manually pinning out the main chip that handled all the button inputs, I drilled 24mm holes directly into the board. Then with my pinout, I wired all the buttons to traces that the original buttons fed through and my buttons worked! For the stick, I strategically cut the white plastic base that the stick ridess along with a dremel. I cut spaces just enough to fit microswitches where the rubber membranes were. The stick is stock Advantage...but now it swivels and rocks on the microswitches instead of rubber pad. Put a bat top on it, hot glued everything and with luck...the bottom base plate closed! Success!
Dang makes sense that it was a long process. Nice work. What kind of games did you play with it? Beat em ups, shmups, or 2D fighters? And do you have any pictures of it online? Really interested in seeing it.
9:54 you see where it says CPS FIGHTER SET at the bottom there? that's so you could one click set the controls to CPS Fighter style, and that same option is in all the other SNES SF2 games. Another cool feature of that stick is that you could swap the cable and use the stick in 2 button mode on NES, beats the hell out of the NES advantage. Also I thought the layout was kinda dumb at first too, but then I played through Megaman X with it and realized how easy it was to do every combination of jump/charge/dash which is kind of difficult on a normal pad.
OHHH I didn't notice that. That makes a lot of sense. I knew there was one for the Sega Genesis, but I didn't know there was a cable for the NES. And I can see how this sort of layout is more universally compatible with games and not just fighting games. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Some of the Sega options included a white version of Capcom's CPS stick specifically for MD. Also a variant of the C&L Controls stick called the Arcadian. Pretty similar to expect except the start button was a switch rather than a button for some reason.
@madspunky Haha yeah I definitely prefer the stick as well, but I think it's cool to see people succeed with what they have. Players like Punk and Anakin being as successful as they are using pad is pretty inspiring.
@kabbusses Ohhh yeah I really like the color scheme of the MD version of the CFPS. Also the Arcadian looks interesting. Looks a lot smaller compared to the SNES version.
This was a very comfy video! I like the clarity of your narration and I learned a lot regarding controllers! Thank you for all the hard work you put into this.
Capcom Fighter Power Stick is so underrated. Although you have to adjust the SF2 button options, I think they went with the layout so it could work well with regular titles. Also, as a bonus, it came with a NES cord option. It works well for playing the Mega Man series.
Yeah upon reflection, I actually think the layout they went with is a lot better than what I suggested haha. Because like you said, it works a lot better for regular titles like MegaMan. Since that was also made by Capcom, the layout was definitely intentional. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Bean bag chair, OG Nintendo hardware and cartridges, a CRT, *and* a Snorlax plush? Do you live in heaven? This also reminds me that I need a fight stick for my PC.
HAHA yeah I'm trynna make this a personal heaven. I always wanted the rooms like those kids in those Nintendo Power ads in their room fully decked out with gear. Hope you enjoyed the video!
I think the debate of using standard controllers vs sticks is really interesting. People who mostly played at home got used to using the D Pad and preferred that and vice versa, and today there's a lot of fighting game pros like Punk that prefer pad to sticks because they grew up with standard controllers. I also started off with standard controllers but grew more used to stick.
@@SodaCanTablet they got use to it because everything in the west was fking expensive and alot of these arcade controllers weren't mass advertised, they were rarely sold especially western shops because they don't get the good stuff (at least not at places like eg australia) i was surprised even the psx had a arcade stick, you definitely couldn't get that at a regular retail store that sells consoles/tvs etc (maybe game stores) even to this day those retail stores only sell regular controllers not arcade sticks, also the west are slow and hate adapting to technology, hk had vcd and svcd, the west didn't adapt to it and skipped from vhs to dvd
Y B A ; L X R makes sense for most games honestly, it most accurately represents the controller IMO, and to be fair SF2:HF does have completely custom controls. Anyway, great video, and super awesome that you made your own fight stick. Yes i'd love a build vod 😍
Yeah you make a good point. Since most games didn't let you customize controls, it makes sense to make the layout work well with the majority of games and just let SFII controls be customizable. I can imagine for platformers like Mario, it'll be comfortable to be able to run with your index finger and jump with your middle finger, with the Y and B buttons on the same row. Thank you and glad you enjoyed the video!
Idk whythis video was recommended to me because I don't play fighting games, but I love this style of videos and idk why it was delayed but the video turned out amazing! New sub
Thank you so much! I plan to release more videos on more general video game controllers and not ones focusing on ones for fighting games, so hopefully those will be even more enjoyable for you. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I appreciate you talking about SNES controllers that I never knew. Even in the past they were trying to emulate the arcade experience and more. Really good video. The silly editing to replicating and modding a fight stick. Enjoyed my time 😂
Thank you! I'm glad you like the editing and the custom stick haha. The stick is definitely one of my prouder builds so far. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Great look at SNES sticks. Hadn't seen some of these before! The button layout with L/R in the top-right and top left, and the SNES Advantage's weird layout is explained by one thing, I've found: The peripheral makers didn't want to simply make sticks that only work for a select few fighting games, and didn't think parents would buy them for their kids if they only worked well with that select handful of titles. With the L/R spaced on either edge, you could still get away with playing games that didn't allow button rebinding and relied on the positional aspect of those- think Mario Kart and F-Zero, for instance. Fighting games all allowed the buttons to be re-bound but a large amount of the games on the system don't have these options, so it was logical from a sales standpoint to maintain this positional layout for folks that wanted to play things besides fighters with these somewhat-expensive peripherals. Cheers
Yeah in retrospect, I think that was the right move since like you said, it makes the controllers compatible with a wider range of games and fighting game buttons could be remapped anyways. I think a good example is Mega Man since that was also made by Capcom, and the layout makes it easier to jump and shoot with your middle and index fingers respectively. If it was in a more fight stick focused layout, the buttons would be on top of each other rather than next to each other.
9:16 Interesting fact for those that didn't know: The Capcom Fighter Power Stick is the same stick that was also made for the extremely rare Capcom CPS Changer, a console that Capcom made that was similar to the Neo Geo AES that utilized the Capcom CP System arcade hardware, or CPS1. The CPS Changer used Super Nintendo controllers (included the Fighter Power Stick) and it worked more like a Supergun than a home console, and it was sold only via mail order, which why it's so rare. Only 11 games were made for it, including an extremely rare version of Street Fighter Zero/Alpha
Oh huh I didn't know the CPS Changer used SNES controllers. Interesting that it worked like a supergun. Does that mean it takes JAMMA boards? It seems like it was more like the AES like you said since if it just used JAMMA boards, it would have more than 11 games compatible with it.
Lady Decade and Geekstorian have good commentary on the CPS Changer, I would suggest looking those up. UA-cam keeps removing my messages for no reason so I had to make it like this
Awesome channel, happy to have found it. One stick I really like on SNES/Genesis is the DOCS arcade stick. It uses a pretty decent Seimitsu clone lever with a square gate and it actually uses IBM Model M-esque buckling springs for the buttons, which is super unique and actually feels quite nice.
Oh wow those look really cool. I really like the color scheme on them. Reminds me of the Sega Genesis version of the Capcom Fighter Power Stick. I'd really like to try them one day. Maybe if I make a part 2 to this video, I'll try to get my hands on one of those. Thanks for the support!
Really enjoyed the video. Super well made! To be honest, your delivery, pacing, and filming/editing made something I was already fairly interested in even more enjoyable. If you ever do anything involving arcade sticks with other consoles I’ll be ready :)
Thank you so much! Really happy to hear that. I don't have plans to do more videos related to arcade sticks in the immediate future besides the padhacking one, but someone commented a list of interesting arcade sticks so there's definitely a chance I'll revisit it in the future. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Yeaaah I'd really love to try using the trackball one as well. Looks really fun, but my local arcade doesn't have it unfortunately. Hope you enjoyed the video!
@@SodaCanTabletHey man. In one of the pictures i noticed you have an AiAi plush. How much did you pay for it? I have one of those exact plushes and i happened to get it for 30 dollars. Just wanted to know
I actually hadn't heard about that one til now, but it looks really cool. I love how big the base is. Seems to be a more deluxe version of the Ascii Fighter Stick SN? I hope I can get them to compare if I ever make a part 2 to this vid. Glad you enjoyed the video!
great video bro, i normally dont kno shi abt fightsticks so its real informative for sumn who dont use em despite likin fgs, really hope u cover sega next.
Thank you! Glad it was informative. So I really love SEGA, but I don't have too many accessories for it like with the SNES. I hope in the future I can cover it though because the SEGA sticks look sick. The official 6 button arcade stick for the Genesis looks so sleek. I'm also really interested in the later SEGA consoles like the Saturn and Dreamcast so I hope I can cover them as well.
Some of these sticks look absolutely nuts. Nice job with your custom one though, looks very professional. One other SNES stick out there worth looking into is the HORI Fighting Stick HSJ-12, which I think was only released in Japan. It's got an all metal shell with a nice HORI-branded stick and buttons. Even has turbo switches. Great video!
Thank you so much! Yeah the HORI one looks awesome, especially since the stick I use on PC is also from HORI so I'd really love to get my hands on one some day. Just a bit too expensive at the moment, but if I ever make a part 2 to this video, I'll definitely talk about that one. Glad you enjoyed the video! :^)
Yeah I would've if I had them. I've tried the Fighter Stick SN and I didn't think it was too interesting, but I've never heard of the PsychoPad KO and it looks super cool. I'll definitely try to get it if I make a part 2. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Yeah someone pointed it out in another comment I didn't notice it. If you press the button at the bottom of the screen at 9:54 that says CPS Fighter Set it automatically sets the buttons to match the Capcom Power Stick which is what the CPS stands for.
That is why for classic Mortal Kombat on the SNES and Sega Genesis need to be made by the fans. Because MK is very different layout of buttons. The center button is to bl;ock, the bottom right of your joystick have a button that is he run button. Again very diferent from other fightig game button layouts. Also the CAPCOM arcade stick is perfect to play other games too. I know the layout is odd. Most SNES games uses the Y, B, and A buttons As the X button is usually for some sub weapon or something that you usually never use. The L and R buttons are usually rarely use. But when it does, you usually press it one or some few times. So the layout of Y, B, and A for the buttom, while the top is L, X, and R are in the top. IT works. Trust me I played a lot of games with that stick. You rearely will ever use L, X, and R buttons. By the way that Capcom layout is almost the same layout front buttons use on the Gamecube. However it's B, a and X for the botton, the top have one more button the Y button. The Left trigger and right trigger are analog, and one small Z button. Wait... where there ever any fighting sticks release on the gamecube? The N64 fightstick sucks.
I never played MK on the traditional MK stick layout but yeah fanmade is prob the best for that series in the earlier consoles. The Capcom stick layout makes more sense with that explanation. Especially for Mega Man since that was also made by Capcom. Shoot with index and jump with middle. Apparently there was a fight stick for GameCube made by HORI for Soul Calibur II. Seems pretty rare though. There was also one made by Nuby but those don't seem too good. The N64 fight stick I actually own 2 kinds. 1 is the more common Arcade Shark, but I also have the Mad Catz Dual Arcade stick which I made a video on. I actually really like the Mad Catz one because it uses microswitches and doesn't feel squishy like with the InterAct one. Hope you enjoyed the video!
That's exactly what I plan to do. Recently, I customized my Neo Geo ASP, I swapped out the stock parts with Sanwa stick and buttons. Now I want to build a second arcade stick by using its still working stock parts and a SNES PC-controller PCB. I have all I need, so why not! 🤷♂️
The QJ SN stick is my favorite of these purely for how gimmicky it is. I'd be down for someone to make the ultimate version of it with modern improvements. This was such a cool video though, definitely subbing for more. This is the kind of thing Derek from "Stop Skeletons From Fighting" would be all over.
Yeah I think the Capcom one is my favorite to actually use, but overall the QJ is also my favorite. I love gimmicky stuff that's why I prefer collecting peripherals to collecting games. And thank you! SSFF is definitely part of what inspired me to start making videos so that means a lot. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Yeah I like the Capcom one when playing the games, but overall the QJ one is also def my favorite. That's why I prefer collecting peripherals to collecting games because peripherals tend to be more gimmicky and quirky. As for a modern version, I feel like since you can program macros already, it would definitely be possible to also program combos and lever macros. And thank you! SSFF was one of my inspirations for making vids so it means a lot.
Yeah I feel like even with mass manufacturing, it'd still be pretty difficult to produce good sticks. I think that's why people appreciated the MAS sticks so much. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Haha yeah I feel like it's because this is before good quality sticks were common, but with Playstation onwards, there were easy to find sticks that are actually good so there wasn't really a point to making your own. Hope you enjoyed the video!
I did sacrifice a snes controller for a custom arcade stick, with dual output (+ a brook UFB) but the controller pcb didn't like much being along the brook pcb, played for a good time like this but then I got an brook wingman adapter which accepts many controllers, even some wireless. If you already have an arcade stick I would go for it, also you can use it on a NES too. great video, cool to see all those old options
Ohhh that's really cool. The dual output reminds me of those third party controllers that had 2 controller plugs so you could use it with different consoles. Using an arcade stick on the NES seems great since there's a lot of arcade type games on it. And thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video.
I found one called the top fighter QJ and its all metal and has actual clicky arcade buttons. No idea when it came out but the thing is built like a tank
Oh huh it seems like a reconfigured version of the QJ Digital Action Learning System. The A1, A2, and A3 buttons are the macro buttons. Very interesting that they made an updated version of their controller. Thanks for letting me know about that. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Another great video man Love the deep dive and explanation for newer people without making it slow or annoying to veterans haha Ive been building controllers for a decade and none of my look as good as yours 😅 haha This inspired me to want to make more vids based controllers / accessories As far as these for horn sticks , the hori series has always been my go to. I use the hori Saturn arcade sticks on my supergun currently because of how well they feel stock and I’m lazy Anyways keep up the good work
Thank you! Yeah I'm glad the explanations weren't too slow for people who already know haha. Practice makes perfect with any sort of craft. Happy to hear my vids inspired you to make your own vids. I saw the Hori stick and I really wanted to try it out too, but those were a bit expensive as well. The Saturn HORI stick is really cool and I'd like to get a Saturn one day. I have a few JAMMA boards but still need to buy a Supergun. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I haven't played SF6 so I'm not entirely sure, but it seems like the modern controls is pretty similar to the macros. The special macros are like the special move button and the combo macro is similar to the assisted combo feature. I hope I get to try SF6 one day to see haha. And thank you for the support! Glad you enjoyed the video. :^)
Oh damn I didn't know that. I wish I had the manuals for these so I can see if any of these other controllers have hidden features like that. Hope you enjoyed the video!
I own the Capcom stick but I just have trouble with joysticks generally as they move when I play and it throws me off. I have an arcade cabinet which doesn't move and only then can I play well.
Ah yeah I'm guessing the spring in the lever isn't stiff enough for your liking. I think you can replace them with stiffer ones, but honestly if you have a full arcade cabinet it's probably better to just play it on there haha. That's awesome though. I have some non fighting game arcade cabinets, but I want to get the Neo Geo fighting game ones some day. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Bruh why is it so hard for companies have the buttons layout on those be like: Y X L B A R Where the actions would be from the left to right: Light,Medium,Heavy Punch Light,Medium,Heavy Kick That's just silly to see 😅
Yeah I was confused too, but a lot of commenters brought up a good point. Fighting games let you configure the controls, so it's not TOO big of a deal if the button placements aren't optimal at the default settings since you can just tune them to your liking. Other games that don't let you configure the controls would benefit from having the button layout like L X R Y B A because the Y, B, and A buttons are very commonly used action buttons so it'd be easier to have them in a straight line. Imagine playing Mega Man and you want to jump and shoot. You just have to use the 2 buttons on the bottom left which are easy to access using your index and middle finger. If it was a layout that focused only on fighting games, the Y button would be above the B button so pressing them at the same time would be a little more challenging. I think that's really cool that the designers had the foresight to make that decision which initially seemed weird to us.
@@SodaCanTablet I mean, good point but I couldn't see myself playing megaman on an arcade like controller 😂 Well except for ones released for it I guess.
I have a couple of "Top Fighter" joyticks with all metal casings. I feel like the joysticks on those are a bit awkward feeling, but there is something nice about, well, the all-metal casing. I would like to try a Hori Fighting Stick SFC sometime.
Oh wow I didn't know about the Top Fighter. They look really cool and sleek. Kind of reminds me of military equipment with the all black look and bright buttons. I like the little groove on the ball top stick for your thumb to rest on too. I'd like to try the HORI stick as well. If I ever make a part 2 to this video, that'll definitely be in it. Hope you enjoyed the video!
I got those big fancy ones and the glass one with sfxt SC4 SF4 mvc3 and blazblue lmao edit: well HAD; I sold them over time :/ couldnt hold on to them. those homies that brought them better treat them well; I had the boxes and all for them still :(
Thank you! Do you remember what model they are? I'm interested in seeing them especially the glass ones. Are they the Mad Catz ones? Sad you had to let them go though. :^( I'm sure they're being taken good care of.

13:36 the Customization is an Extension of their original Purpose. These are called Fight sticks but they are Arcade Sticks & Buttons which were designed to be modular to be able to simply replace parts for commercial use. So the benefits to customization is just the DNA of these parts. Their existence extends beyond the FGC and pre dates it, it isn't a benefit due to the FGC.
Ah yeah that's true. That's my bias for fighting games showing I guess haha. I really like how you put it how customization is engrained in the DNA of these parts too. Very poetic. Thanks for watching!
Don't worry, you didn't miss much with the c&l sticks. They used the Happ Ultimate lever & buttons, which were extremely stiff and uncomfortable compared to the later Happ Competition ones. Surprisingly, they had quick disconnects instead of soldered wires like the old MAS sticks had. There was a c&l genesis & snes combo stick too, but it was even worse because there was no room for your wrists at all.
Ah that's pretty cool. Pretty cool they had quick disconnects probably so people could swap them out without soldering. I wish there was some more info on the C&L stick for the Genesis. I'm really curious what it looks like. Thanks for watching!
oh man that asciiware stick... and worst of all they put that layout over the SF2 arcade control panel like it was an exact match in the magazine ads! like who are they trying to fool with that stuff?! I did own the genesis version of the CPS fighter, was a pretty solid stick for playing special champion edition, that's for sure!
YEAH I remember that ad. They really thought we were that stupid HAHA. The Genesis version of the CPSF looks sick I think it looks cooler than the SNES version. One thing I think is interesting is how Genesis was associated with black coloring and SNES usually with the off white, but with this it was reversed. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Yeah I can't even beat the 6th opponent if I'm playing on normal difficulty, so I will likely never make it to M Bison HAHA. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Man I had no clue just how many snes fight sticks were made. I knew about the first one, but barely anything about the rest lol. Btw do you think you’ll ever cover the sega Saturn fight sticks? They seem pretty interesting. Btw nice CRT
Yeah it's wild this barely scratches the surface of SNES fight sticks. I would love to make a vid on some SEGA Saturn stuff but I don't own a Saturn. I'm really hoping I can get one in the future though. And thank you I love this CRT.
@@SodaCanTablet Wait there’s still more? That’s insane to me lol. Also I hope you’re able to get a sega Saturn soon. I recommend the model 1 because the model 2 can be incompatible for about a third of the library for some reason lol
Yeaaah that's a really good point I didn't think about that. It makes sense too since pinball machines are common in arcades. Thanks! Hope you enjoyed the video!
Great video, more of this! I’ve got the Hori Fighting Stick for SFC. Do you know if there’s any way to make the stick’s movement more smooth? Mine is creaky but otherwise in great shape. I love that it’s got a metal frame
Thank you! As for the stick, the most likely thing is that it's just dirty. I'd check this video out to see how you can disassemble it and do a deep cleaning. If it's a different reason, taking it apart will still let you see what's causing the problem. Might be that the spring popped out of place or something. ua-cam.com/video/vaf1DHMYBz4/v-deo.htmlsi=qR1Av1ifyzor72Ng And yeah I don't have one myself, but it looks awesome. Thanks for watching!
@@SodaCanTablet this is perfect, thanks! I’ll tear it down this weekend and see what it needs. This just gave me another question. I just installed a JLF stick on my 8bitdo arcade stick and it came with 2 identical plastic washers for. I’m wondering, do you prefer to keep both washers on the top side of the controller? I took one off and it seems fine
Can you do NES Joysticks for the NES Advantage, Shinsei Corporation's, Hyperstick Controller, the Beeshu line of joysticks Jammer Joystick, Superstick, Ultimate Superstick, Remote Ultimate Superstick, Gizmo Joystick, Zinger, and Zoomer, Camerica's Supersonic: The Joystick, Nexoft's The Dominator Master Control, Suncom's Mother Ship Control Enhancer, the QuickShot/Bondwell line of joysticks QuickShot Joystick (Deluxe Digital Joystick model QS-130), Maverick 2, Python 2 Deluxe, and IMN's The Game Handler (a.k.a. The IMN GH-001), etc.?
Wow thanks for the suggestions! Those all look really interesting I think my favorites are the Beeshu Superstick, Gizmo Joystick, and the IMN GH-001. The IMN GH-001 in particular since it's motion controlled really intrigues me. I would have to buy them all, which is definitely going to take a lot of time, but I'll keep that video idea in mind. Thank you! And hope you enjoyed the video!
I had one that worked on both SNES and Genesis (it had swappable cords) that I never see anyone mention. I have no idea what the brand was. I just remember it was kind of purple. Six button Street Fighter style layout.
@@SodaCanTablet Yeah, I did some searching and that's the one. I probably still have that thing in a box in my parents house. I don't think it used microswitches or anything nice like that but the layout was perfect and it worked decently enough.
I also enjoyed using it while playing Turtles in Time in the video, but I just don't like it for fighting games because the finger placements are weird.
The best snes fighter controller was a fight pad by Capcom (I think?) that came out around the time of Killer Instincts release Pistol grip under the directional pad (left hand) and flat right with 6button layout. L&r to the right of Y and B, default SF2 layout worked great, and you could keyboard tap with your right hand while pistol gripping the left Comfortable, responsive, proper layout. I think I still have it in a box with my snes somewhere…… hmmmm…..
Ahhh yeah the Capcom Pad Soldier. It looks really interesting and I'd love to get my hands on that one day. I really love when different control schemes are combined like with this one left hand like a traditional controller and right hand laid out like it would be on an arcade stick. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Thank you! I don't have ANY training, so I appreciate the tip. I'll keep that in mind next time since I like my fingers attached to my hand. Glad you enjoyed the video!
i know you're still covering mostly 5th 4th gen gaming accs but i was wondering if down the line you could do a vid on PS1/PS2 sticks ive never heard much about what was good what wasnt and alot of people have said sticks were very gimmicky back then i think it would be great to have a resource to look upon to know and understand whats good as someone who wants to buy one for that gen of fighting games
Ohhh yeah I currently only have 1 arcade stick for the PS2 but if I get more, I will definitely consider making a similar video for the PS1/2. One stick I can recommend for PS2 is the 10th anniversary Tekken stick. It's made by HORI and I honestly didn't buy any more sticks after getting this one because I love it so much. But yeah thanks for the suggestion! Hope you enjoyed the video!
I guess they thought the US market needed something edgy so they made the console into a block. Kinda reminds me of how they make Kirby look angry in the US releases haha.
@@SodaCanTablet Yes that's definitely one of the reasons! I just remembered I THINK another reason was to reduce American kids spilling their drinks on top. They would put them on top the NES. (Was it to make it easier to balance drinks or stop them? I haven't seen a US model in real life to try). But yes they also thought the Super Famicom design looked childish compared to the US market Genesis. I still can't get used to the US design though lol
Yeah that's one of the sticks I definitely want to try to get if I ever make a part 2 to this vid. I already love HORI so it's perfect for the subject. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Haha thank you! I have actually made controllers for people irl, but shipping costs were a bit too expensive for it to be worth it for most people online. My next video was going to basically be a tutorial for making custom controllers, so if you're comfortable with it maybe you can try your hand at making one. Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@SodaCanTablet I know it'll be a bit expensive to make my own... But I want to make my own. Making the whole thing to work with a USB port would be functional for a lot of retro games. Even just the box itself would be pricey to make. Then there's the motherboard, the buttons, stick... It's gonna be pricey.
I made a Hitbox style controller for a friend not too long ago for PC that uses USB. I used a Raspberry Pi Pico for the logic board with the GP2040 code you can find online. I prefer the Pico to the Brooke UFB mainly because Picos are only $5. If cost is the main hurdle, I'd look into the Pico board. It's definitely a big portion of the cost down if you use that instead of UFBs. And yeah the buttons and the stick are definitely the most expensive parts. Sticks being $30 and each button being $2, it can add up quickly. But since the Pi uses a standard USB cable, you can use it with your pc and any emulators. Also for the case, you can use wood like I did, or if there's a thrift store near you, I'd recommend dropping by occasionally and seeing if they have any good boxes. My local Goodwill has small wood boxes that I think were for jewelry that would make good arcade sticks. Whatever you decide to do, good luck with it I hope it turns out well. Lmk if there's some way I can help with your build too.
@@SodaCanTablet Thank you for the input. I have been wanting to put my Shop Class skills back into work for a custom fight stick. Though the work is gonna be a bit timely. I'll need to save up for the stick and buttons. I saw a good bundle for a stick and buttons on Amazon. The board though will be a separate expense. I plan to map the buttons and set it up to be like an SNES controller. Problem is I'll need to put the L, R, ZL, and ZR buttons appropriately. It'd have to be an 8-button style stick, and in the case of emulation, I could easily map the buttons. I just have to save up the money for the stuff on Amazon. For the art, I'm thinking of trying to get an artist to do some stuff of my favorite anime girls as something of a pinup style.
The Capcom stick was also used for the CPS changer, which explains the high quality components.
Oh shoot that's really cool. Crap I should've mentioned that in the video. I'm gonna pin your comment so people know. Thank you.
That Astolfo body pillow fight stick kills me 💀
Awesome video man
HAHA same. And thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video. :^)
Man im so glad the algorithm recommended your channel! I really love your style. I love how everything is just very personable laid-back. Kind of gives me that vibe of when you visit a friend's house and you're just hanging out. Im definitely subscribing have a great day!
This comment said it the best. Glad i found this vid
@ Aralis97 Thank you so much! It really means a lot that my vid gives off that vibe. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Hope you'll have a great day as well!
@ Michafrar Glad you enjoyed it! I really enjoy your art as well, so thank you for them. :^)
First of all....YES with your hair! 🤘🏻
As someone who grew up with the SUPER Advantage...it was all I knew and I made it work for me. U.K. was lucky to get the much improved Score Master fight stick!
@SodaCanTablet
Yes!
@SodaCanTablet
Thanks! 😅
Long story short-ish...nothing was just plug and play and swappable.
Sega fanboys always say their 6-button pad was better for Street Fighter. Sure, but if you took it seriously, you had the Capcom stick.
Some of the Sega options included a white version of Capcom's CPS stick specifically for MD.
Also a variant of the C&L Controls stick called the Arcadian. Pretty similar to expect except the start button was a switch rather than a button for some reason.
We had to beg mom to buy us a 2 six button controllers let alone a fight stick.
@ SECONDQUEST Relatable. I used to just skip school lunch and save my lunch money to buy new games LOL.
This was a very comfy video! I like the clarity of your narration and I learned a lot regarding controllers! Thank you for all the hard work you put into this.
Glad you enjoyed it! I appreciate your support. :^)
So many good memories fighting my older brother in SF2 back in the day!
We just had the standard controllers, they were aight.
Nice work on the custom stick man, looks great!
Thank you so much! When I saw your comment on my last video, I thought you'd like this video because of your name and profile pic haha.
Algorithm W. I like ur style kid
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. :^)
Glad you enjoyed the video!
thank god you uploaded i straight up couldn’t find your channel and wasn’t able to watch your other videos cuz i forgot your username
Haha thank you for enjoying my videos!
What a well-made video. You're also super likeable. I don't seek out content like this but you made it easy to understand and fun to watch.
Thank you. :^)
Cheers
derp mario kart is a bad example because both buttons jump/slide the same, but you get the idea- many games used positional left/right actions on L/R.
I loved the video! Very informative. I like to see review about the classic arcade sticks i like those better than the new ones.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. :^)
You made this old guy laugh
And I learned a lot
Haha happy to hear that!

Interesting fact for those that didn't know: The Capcom Fighter Power Stick is the same stick that was also made for the extremely rare Capcom CPS Changer, a console that Capcom made that was similar to the Neo Geo AES that utilized the Capcom CP System arcade hardware, or CPS1.
UA-cam keeps removing my messages for no reason so I had to make it like this
1:57, ooooooo that feature is so cool. Fight-fight-fight-fight. The visual design is definitely a home run.
Yeah that feature was really common in this era for third party controllers.
Hey man idk if you internet famous yet but I believe in you.
Thank you so much! That means a lot haha.
@@SodaCanTablet Conveniently works great for either an SNES part 2 or a Genesis video
Whoa that's a weird looking monkey ball arcade The one I saw had a giant trackball on it which makes way more sense.
Yeaaah I'd really love to try using the trackball one as well. Looks really fun, but my local arcade doesn't have it unfortunately. Hope you enjoyed the video!
The one you saw is the Ticket Blitz arcade game (from around 2015 i think). That Monkey Ball stick is from the original 90's arcade game
@@SodaCanTabletHey man. In one of the pictures i noticed you have an AiAi plush. How much did you pay for it? I have one of those exact plushes and i happened to get it for 30 dollars. Just wanted to know
@@fran5678can 90's? I thought Monkey Ball was a GameCube game and I thought the GameCube came out in like 1999 or 2000.
really enjoyed that mate .. you are really relaxed on camera. great video buddy
Thank you! I'm actually really introverted, so I'm glad I still manage to seem relaxed on camera haha. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I wish i had a "stick extender" in for myself...
Don't worry king, it's not the length that matters, it's about technique. The motion of the ocean ya know.
This is such a great video! One you didn't showcase that I highly recommend is the ASCII Fighter Stick Special.
I actually hadn't heard about that one til now, but it looks really cool. I love how big the base is. Seems to be a more deluxe version of the Ascii Fighter Stick SN? I hope I can get them to compare if I ever make a part 2 to this vid. Glad you enjoyed the video!
This video feels like it was made years ago and I mean that in a good way. Loved this
Thank you! Yeah I think a lot of my inspiration are from older UA-camrs I used to watch so it means a lot. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Asciiware Fighter Stick SN has always been my go to SNES controller for SF2. Comfortable layout and appropriately responsive.
Yeah it's definitely a way better layout than the Super Advantage. It's just too bad the stick is also squishy.
great video bro, i normally dont kno shi abt fightsticks so its real informative for sumn who dont use em despite likin fgs, really hope u cover sega next.
amazing video i really love it thumps up
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. :^)
You forgot to mention AsciiWare's Fighter Stick SN and ActLabs' PsychoPad K.O. for the SNES.
Yeah I would've if I had them. I've tried the Fighter Stick SN and I didn't think it was too interesting, but I've never heard of the PsychoPad KO and it looks super cool. I'll definitely try to get it if I make a part 2. Hope you enjoyed the video!
@SodaCanTablet tutorial of how to make the street fighter 2 Ce edition arcade stick for snes
It's in the works! Sorry for the long wait!
@@SodaCanTablet alright
One of the SF2 ports had a pre-set configuration for this stick specifically, where L and R are jab and fierce respectively.
Dang I love Neo Geo. One day I'd love to get an MVS or AES. And that sounds cool! Let us know how that goes. I'd really love to see how it turns out.
Nice vid big dawg
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. :^)
SSFF was one of my inspirations for making vids so it means a lot.
the monkey ball replica, looks awesome
Thank you so much! It's definitely My proudest build. My next video will be about how to make one, so maybe you can build one too if you want haha.
I can imagine that making a product of that calibre is EXPENSIVE.
Yeah I feel like even with mass manufacturing, it'd still be pretty difficult to produce good sticks. I think that's why people appreciated the MAS sticks so much. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Yes! The best stick for any of the old 8/16 bit systems is always build your own!
Haha yeah I feel like it's because this is before good quality sticks were common, but with Playstation onwards, there were easy to find sticks that are actually good so there wasn't really a point to making your own. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Cool video man
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. :^)
Glad you enjoyed the video.
hahah yes, looked exactly like those lol
the extra cable was a bit annoying too, was another reason for getting the adapter thing @@SodaCanTablet
Another great video man
Love the deep dive and explanation for newer people without making it slow or annoying to veterans haha
Ive been building controllers for a decade and none of my look as good as yours 😅 haha
This inspired me to want to make more vids based controllers / accessories
As far as these for horn sticks , the hori series has always been my go to.
I use the hori Saturn arcade sticks on my supergun currently because of how well they feel stock and I’m lazy
Anyways keep up the good work
That one with macro is awesome, I wish I could play this on SF6 with modern lol, I subscribe! what amazing content
The SN Programmable stick can rotate it's face buttons, that's why it's a raise circle.
Oh damn I didn't know that. I wish I had the manuals for these so I can see if any of these other controllers have hidden features like that. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Good shit dude!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. :^)
I'm not big on Pookeymans or plushes, but that Snorlax plushie is pretty rad.
I had to think for a bit what you meant by Pookeyman. Yeah I like it a lot it makes for a good pillow or punching bag occasionally HAHAHA.
liked the vid lots of great info keep it up
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. :^)
My Super Nes was literally a sf2 machine. I bought it just to play that game... It really was a fantastic port.
Haha yeah I also want to get SF2 turbo because of the added characters. And Street Fighter Alpha 2 was a miracle they got that ported to the SNES.
Nice vid even if it took you some time. Looking forward to more.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it. :^)
Already watched this video twice I love it
Haha thank you so much for your support!
Your welcome
You know I think you have the right idea with the monkey ball and capcom stick being made combined.
Yeah that's what I'm leaning towards so that I won't make 2 videos that are basically the same content haha. Thanks for watching!
I got a Snes Fighting Stick HORI HSJ-12, it's a metal body stick with an actual arcade stick ❤
Those look sick. I'm hoping to get one if I ever make a part 2 to this vid. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Extremely comfy video
Thank you so much! And thank you for the shout out on Twitter as well.
This is so chill.
Awesome video
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
i like your blahaj
Haha thank you. I actually have 2 more and I want to get some of the smaller ones one day.
Great video!
Thank you so much!
Bruh why is it so hard for companies have the buttons layout on those be like:
Y X L
B A R
Where the actions would be from the left to right:
Light,Medium,Heavy Punch
Light,Medium,Heavy Kick
That's just silly to see 😅
Yeah I was confused too, but a lot of commenters brought up a good point. Fighting games let you configure the controls, so it's not TOO big of a deal if the button placements aren't optimal at the default settings since you can just tune them to your liking. Other games that don't let you configure the controls would benefit from having the button layout like

because the Y, B, and A buttons are very commonly used action buttons so it'd be easier to have them in a straight line.
@@SodaCanTablet I mean, good point but I couldn't see myself playing megaman on an arcade like controller 😂
Well except for ones released for it I guess.
Good video man; I've brought and sold like 5 sticks in my life; honestly over 1 grand in all in my lifetime lol
I got those big fancy ones and the glass one with sfxt SC4 SF4 mvc3 and blazblue lmao
edit: well HAD; I sold them over time :/ couldnt hold on to them. those homies that brought them better treat them well; I had the boxes and all for them still :(
Thank you! Do you remember what model they are? I'm interested in seeing them especially the glass ones. Are they the Mad Catz ones? Sad you had to let them go though. :^( I'm sure they're being taken good care of.
@@SodaCanTablet -SOULCALIBUR V Arcade FightStick SOUL Edition (I had the 5th one not 4th lol)
-SFxT Cross Edition PS3 Madcatz
- THe blazblue one was Arc Sys/Aksys’ Blazblue arcade style controller has eight buttons with optional turbo built with Sanwa Denshi parts; I had the blue one.
-the mvc3 was madcatz too
I tried looking for the glass sf4 one I had but couldn't find the same ver I had; It was one of the first arcrade sticks I got and broke lol I think it may of been custom I brought it off ebay
The Capcom Fighter Power Stick also works with the NES. Just got one this weekend, but missing the NES cord
Ahhh that's cool. Playing NES games with a proper arcade stick reminds me of the PlayChoice 10 that must be a fun experience haha.
But it is an easy drop in with a comp stick i got one. def not worth paying over 100 bucks for just to mod tho
Ah that's pretty cool. Pretty cool they had quick disconnects probably so people could swap them out without soldering. I wish there was some more info on the C&L stick for the Genesis. I'm really curious what it looks like. Thanks for watching!
RIP this channel
oh man that asciiware stick... and worst of all they put that layout over the SF2 arcade control panel like it was an exact match in the magazine ads! like who are they trying to fool with that stuff?!
The original cheat box. I have one of these. Beating M Bison was tough
Yeah I can't even beat the 6th opponent if I'm playing on normal difficulty, so I will likely never make it to M Bison HAHA. Hope you enjoyed the video!
only time ive heard of a controller echoing like that is the freaking nintendo zapper
OH I can't believe I forgot about the Zapper. Yeah it's really similar haha crazy how loud it is. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Yo dawg i love videos about videogame controllers you just got a new sub from me homie B)
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. :^)
I’ve watched all your videos twice
Thank you so much for your support! Hope you'll enjoy this one as well.
Methinks the SN Programmable has those L+R buttons on the sides to mimic a pinball setup, no idea if SNES pinball games use L and R for bumpers tho

And yeah I don't have one myself, but it looks awesome.
As much as i wanted a fight stick at the time, i only had the capcom fight pad; its still the only one i use
Ohhh yeah I've heard good things about that one too. Definitely a great option.
@@SodaCanTablet Thank you.
I had one that worked on both SNES and Genesis (it had swappable cords) that I never see anyone mention. I have no idea what the brand was. I just remember it was kind of purple. Six button Street Fighter style layout.
Is it the Arcade Pro by InterAct? That one has a swappable cord and half the buttons are purple.
@@SodaCanTablet Yeah, I did some searching and that's the one. I probably still have that thing in a box in my parents house.
I don't think it used microswitches or anything nice like that but the layout was perfect and it worked decently enough.
I had 0 issues with the super advantage. I liked it
I also enjoyed using it while playing Turtles in Time in the video, but I just don't like it for fighting games because the finger placements are weird.
I'd be super interested in more pad hacking videos, I've been looking into making a Mega Drive and SNES arcade stick for a minute
Sounds good I'll try to touch on all the points in my next video so that it can help with that.
The best snes fighter controller was a fight pad by Capcom (I think?) that came out around the time of Killer Instincts release
Pistol grip under the directional pad (left hand) and flat right with 6button layout. L&r to the right of Y and B, default SF2 layout worked great, and you could keyboard tap with your right hand while pistol gripping the left
Comfortable, responsive, proper layout.
I liked this video.
I did not like watching you almost lose a finger on your little table saw. Fingers stay on one side of the blade.
Thank you! I don't have ANY training, so I appreciate the tip. I'll keep that in mind next time since I like my fingers attached to my hand. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Yes more videos!!!!
i know you're still covering mostly 5th 4th gen gaming accs but i was wondering if down the line you could do a vid on PS1/PS2 sticks ive never heard much about what was good what wasnt and alot of people have said sticks were very gimmicky back then i think it would be great to have a resource to look upon to know and understand whats good as someone who wants to buy one for that gen of fighting games
The SNES outside the USA looked like the Famicom. So It's also the "SNES" design. I don't know why it was changed for the US market.
I'd recommend the Hori Fighting Stick. The design is pretty basic, but it's sturdy and uses good parts.
Yeah that's one of the sticks I definitely want to try to get if I ever make a part 2 to this vid. I already love HORI so it's perfect for the subject. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Savage 🦍✊
I had the programmable snes arcade stick.
Dude I wish i could commission you to work on an arcade stick! I love your stuff
I still wish I had some of these fight sticks. I'd even be fine with a USB fight stick. But I gotta save up my money and invest with care.
Ah yeah. The good thing is that modern sticks are really accessible and have tons of options. Hope you can get one you like!
