My husband and I regularly went out for dinner with another couple who knew I loved St. Elsewhere. We got in the car one night and my friend hit a button on the CD player. They had bought me Dave Grusins cd and preset it to St. Eleswhere. It was a great surprise.
Love this music and the TV series. Those medical hospital dramas. You'd know that doctors are humans too! The music brings me fond memories! Thank you Dave Grusin. Genius!
I could listen and watch this over and over. Such talent, from writing the music to performing it by everyone there. I sure wish I could have been involved, but God didn't give me that talent. Oh well, at least I can enjoy listening..
This so takes me back to the 80’s. I was a mental health nurse but was once asked to special a patient on a nearby burns unit. Another patient was admitted who set himself on fire. Only in his twenties he was. I helped restrain him from wanting to leave. He died later that night. I watched St Elsewhere when getting home after work on video. I found myself breaking down in tears. Something ill never forget.
My neighbor back in 82 had an uncle who was a cab driver. He picked up guy who wrote Cheers themesong from LAX. Drove him to the studio to record Cheers theme. My neighbors uncle drove Cheers guy to studio. I am practically a cast member on Cheers at this point.
I was in residency for surgery. I fell fir the show. My daughter called it “Sink Whussaire”. I am retired and am beginning my piano lessons. I played wind instruments of all kinds except oboe. Imitating my favorite melodies with great chord progress makes piano all the more enjoyable.
This takes me back to the 80’s. Now April 2022 still in this horrible pandemic I am thankful I still remember the 80’s although now it all seems a vague dream with glimpses of the past here and there.
I was a huge st elsewhere fan watched on Friday nights 1-2am because was the weekend no school. But when on school vacations I stayed up each night 1-2am to watch the show. My favorite was mark Harmon playing bobby Caldwell. Others too
The early 1980s and all things Boston were all the rage... not one but two brilliant TV shows on NBC took place there, St. Elsewhere and Cheers. Bands such as The Cars, Til Tuesday and J Geils were in their heydays. Boston even produced a presidential candidate (failed, though he was) and a Heisman Trophy winner (Doug Flutie and Boston College). I had the privilege of being a college kid there during that time. It was great to be alive.
St Elsewhere, Hill Street Blues, LA Law were just ahead of theirs time, simply avant la lettre...and the theme music of all of these 80ies shows was just brilliant!
I saw St. Elsewhere when i was a child in the 90's in a catalan tv. I saw it because my family want to see it. But every day i wanted to see the intro, i like so so much the music, i dont know why, i liked it.
i remember watching this tv show as a little kid on a late friday night...or was it a saturday. it was past my bed time so i snuck out of my room to watch this w/ the adults
I just love this - one of the best composed theme tunes I have heard - always brings back memories of a young woman I loved and sadly lost ! - We both worked in a hospital - around the time this was on TV - I should have married her I really should!
I am a proud RN from Boston and was glued to my set when this show came on!! It paved the way for other '90s hospital dramas such as "er" and "Chicago Hope".
I was 11 years old when I fell in love with that theme to St Elsewhere but I never get to see if they have a complete song until now what an amazing piece of work
Love this song ! - From Saint Elsewhere - Hospital Based Drama - Just looking at details on Wiki and I didnt realise that it ran from 1982 to 1988 - I worked in a psychiatric hospital from 1981 to 1988 and on two seperate occasions I lived for 6/7 months each time l lived in the nurses home - And when I had finnished my shift and was back to my room (which was on the top 5th floor next to the end room - Which could be very spooky at night with dim lights) - Some Nurses would leave the doors open & be sociable and then some would lock them selves in their room and you'ed never see them ! - But this song when I had finished my shift - Many nights you would hear this theme tune to St Elsewhere belting out from the Nurse's tv's ! ... as if they had not had enough drama at work - They would have to watch it on TV too ?
This is one of those songs that gets in your bones and you want to move and groove and Dave Grusin and Lee Ritenour bring out the perfect sound along with the rest of the band.
St elsewhere was one of my favorite shows I would watch it on Friday nights at midnight during school so I could my homework first before the weekend, then when on school vacation stayed up to 12am to 1am to watch it. Miss this show great cast I had a few favorites of the cast. 😊
I never watched the TV show, but knew the theme song from a Grusin CD a few (?) years back; even picked up some of the piano part. There's such clarity, optimism (without banality) and pulse of life in this tune. I’d forgotten about it till my sister just emailed the link! What a pleasure to watch this video and see Grusin & Ritenour & their professional session guys do such a nice job all while conveying their joy in performing. Need the healing these days! (wasn’t the show about a hospital anyway?…)
What makes this not just a great tune, but a great *theme* tune, is that the qualities you've identified in the music - clarity, intelligent optimism, and life - are the selfsame qualities of the show, which was about, not just a hospital, but an aging, underfunded hospital in the inner city during the Reagan administration; a last stop for the hopeless with nowhere else to turn, and the doctors, nurses, and staff that tried to make it work. It was sweet and sad and humane, and it's a testament to Dave Grusin's skill that he found a way to evoke all of that in sound.
I remember this show I 'd finish on my ward at night walk down to the nurses home to my room - And as walked through the corridors (I was on the top floor - I was on the psychiatric wards! - so they put me up there with the born again christians & Cliff Richard fans !!! ) - As I walked my way up to the top floor - You could hear this shows intro starting on the 8other nurses tv's as I walked past their rooms ! - Loved that intro - Brings back fond memories - Didn't watch much of the show fhough ! - I'd already seen too much of the real thing !
Sadly , I remember bitching at my ex, for talking during the into music to the show. There being no internet at the time, it was real work to research who the artists were, and one could only hear music like this during the intro to a show. At the ending credits, they had some annoying voice stepping on the music, telling you to stay tuned for whatever else they wanted you to watch.
It's July 4th, 2018. "St. Elsewhere" has been gobbled up by a HMO and basic medical care is as far away as the moon and costs as much. At least the music is still here, to encourage and uplift.
I used to stay up late watching the show, thought the theme song was cool. Miss this show a lot of the actors I have seen appearing other shows or movies
This is an awesome song. I wish someone had & would up-load his album from 1981/82. If someone does, please send me a post or email, thanks. It had this hit, plus the theme from "Arthur", & of cause other great Crusin hits. Mr.Crusin is the standard for Jazz-Fusion!
One of the greatest TV theme songs ever written!
My husband and I regularly went out for dinner with another couple who knew I loved St. Elsewhere. We got in the car one night and my friend hit a button on the CD player. They had bought me Dave Grusins cd and preset it to St. Eleswhere. It was a great surprise.
One of the greatest ensemble casts in the history of television
One of my Mom's favorite shows, she was an RN. This theme song is fantastic. The "quality" of music was so great then.
Music at that time ever better than today
There was a time when the average TV theme song was better than any Top 10 hit in 2023
My music teacher in high school In the early '70s made it a point to tell me to forget about the TV show; listen to the music!
👍😥 Indeed!
Agree! Definitely miss those days
Beautiful Decade!
Taxi, St Elsewhere, Magnum PI, Vega$, SWAT, Rockford Files, Most Wanted (Robert Stack).
Love this music and the TV series. Those medical hospital dramas. You'd know that doctors are humans too!
The music brings me fond memories! Thank you Dave Grusin. Genius!
Wonderful performance. Thank you to everyone who was involved and played their part in creating this amazing show.
The best TV theme song ever done!! I listen to it over and over!
Who needs a time machine when a score like this can transport you anywhere - magic!
Too true !
It’s a sign of being an “older” person if you can remember when TV themes were actually good. Do they even bother writing them anymore?
I could listen and watch this over and over. Such talent, from writing the music to performing it by everyone there. I sure wish I could have been involved, but God didn't give me that talent. Oh well, at least I can enjoy listening..

Thank you for your time in Medicine. The 1980s to early 90s were amazing
Our favorite song while we were in th OR saving lives. Great song!! Great song. It really kept us going!! Yeah!!
Thank you for your service and efforts ... Nurse or Physician?
Thanks for saving lives❤. Whenever I hear this song I picture lives being saved in reality ❤
This takes me back to the 80’s. Now April 2022 still in this horrible pandemic I am thankful I still remember the 80’s although now it all seems a vague dream with glimpses of the past here and there.
This was always an absolute banger, coming from a kid born in 1998
A song and a television series with something no one portrays anymore-tenderness. Still my favourite show and one of my favourite songs.
I was a huge st elsewhere fan watched on Friday nights 1-2am because was the weekend no school. But when on school vacations I stayed up each night 1-2am to watch the show. My favorite was mark Harmon playing bobby Caldwell. Others too
Omg. This is unbelievable. I absolutely loved the TV series and this vid brings back amazing memories.
Used to watch this in the 80s sitting in the TV room with my folks after dinner...First time I ever saw Denzel

Just beautiful. A immensely talented bunch.
Beautiful. Wow a lot of old memories.
Love this version ❤ a beautiful theme song. This and Greatest American Hero!
2 great shows from a better time !!
St Elsewhere, Hill Street Blues, LA Law were just ahead of theirs time, simply avant la lettre...and the theme music of all of these 80ies shows was just brilliant!
Agreed, along with Miami Vice & Hunter.
A Team was pretty good.
JUST great!! I LOVE THIS. Great 2 listen while working in the OR#21
The Cagney and Lacey theme was pretty decent, too!
I saw St. Elsewhere when i was a child in the 90's in a catalan tv. I saw it because my family want to see it. But every day i wanted to see the intro, i like so so much the music, i dont know why, i liked it.

It's a great song, everyone searching for the St elsewhere tv song theme led them to this masterpiece
I just love this - one of the best composed theme tunes I have heard - always brings back memories of a young woman I loved and sadly lost ! - We both worked in a hospital - around the time this was on TV - I should have married her I really should!
u bloody fool
If you really, really want it, you'll get a chance next time around. I truly believe that. I don't know why, but I do.
You can always catch up with her! You never know! Just tell her about this song reminding you about her ...
Been there as well Steve, a resident fighting sleep deprivation and waiting that midnight call from a woman I loved, keeping me going
Absolutely fantastic! Dave Grusin is amazing ✨
Brilliant...............Long live the late 70's/early 80's
Sony Kroket b
Great tune. Found my love of smooth jazz
Wow! ❤ I discovered this show on Hulu a few months ago and fell in love with it. This theme song is fantastic even 30+ years later.
Same here. What a great surprise in life to have. A wonderful show and great music.
You just couldn't keep your eyes off TV screen without hearing that familiar theme of St Elsewhere being heard elsewhere in the 80s
This is an iconic Grusin recording. Simple yet layered. The driving bass sets the tone and holds everything together.
I am a proud RN from Boston and was glued to my set when this show came on!! It paved the way for other '90s hospital dramas such as "er" and "Chicago Hope".
ブルーノートTokyo ステキでした😊
I was 11 years old when I fell in love with that theme to St Elsewhere but I never get to see if they have a complete song until now what an amazing piece of work
That's great Buddy!
I was 11 too
I was 12
This number is the very definition and quintessence of "pop" music, but it is so catchy and engaging that it can be forgiven for that.
A lovely tight sparkling performance from some of the best muso's on the planet. RIP Carlos Vega, such a sad loss.
Great version!!!!
Incredible music. Everytime you hear it it puts you in a positive mood.
Carlos Vega ,Jeff Porcaro and Mike Porcaro in my heart !!!
I always feel better when hearing this tune.
Uplifting song, one of a kind.

This so beautiful and great song of all time think about it
This is one of those songs that gets in your bones and you want to move and groove and Dave Grusin and Lee Ritenour bring out the perfect sound along with the rest of the band.
One of the best TV tunes I've ever heard. Need to play this track in the ambulance on duty next time.
After Rockford Files, it is the best TV theme music ever!
Thank you for posting this
The quality of this theme song matched the quality of the show..... St. Elsewhere, one of my all time favorites. Great song, great memories!

This was like a pre ER . Cause St Elsewhere is in Boston . ER IS FROM Chicago
My fave!!! In the world!!!
Flat at :42! Truly a live performance!!!!
No, that was on purpose. He does it again in the same phrase, a departure from the usual recording. I like it when composers vary their chords a bit.
@@gregorypope1717 Right. The key signature is merely a suggestion, after all.
素晴らしい✨🐇

Amazing what musical genius can create......try listening to this without a simple tapping of the foot. Pretty much as good as it gets.....
Amazing!

I did, and that turned out to be a huge mistake.
i love that guitar
Wonderful.
I love GRP's THE GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA In the Digital Mood.
It's July 4th, 2018. "St. Elsewhere" has been gobbled up by a HMO and basic medical care is as far away as the moon and costs as much. At least the music is still here, to encourage and uplift.
CARLOS VEGA on DRUMS!!! :) R.I.P.
Unos genios!
Lol, one of four songs I ever learned to play on clarinet in 1985...before I switched to drums and discovered Rush.
Que guitarra es esa????
My father used to say "This is a very human series". And he never accomplished any1.
I used to stay up late watching the show, thought the theme song was cool. Miss this show a lot of the actors I have seen appearing other shows or movies
Why the end of this song is so short? It make me sad every time.....
