I can't believe this man is 88 years young! Today is July 7, 2022. Mr. Grusin, this song forever will be in the soundtrack of my life of joys and heartbreaks. Thank you for touching my heart and soul with your beautiful music. 🙏🏼❤
CeeCee, Didn't realize Dave G. was 88yrs in 2022. Certainly one of the greatest treasures in American music. Sad how few people probably realize how influential he's been & how big a force behind the scenes of the music world! This now being 2023 means he will be turning 89. Hard to believe I've been listening & loving his style for 50 yrs. That's right. I believe his album Dave Grusin "Discovered Again" on his own "direct-to-disc" label, Sheffield Records dates from 1973 if I'm correct. I and another friend at the time both owned copies & in the 1990s I updated by purchasing the CD re-release. Sheffield had turned out a number of direct disc recordings in the 1970s & into the 80s. Absolutely some of the best sound ever put on a vinyl disc. After the Sheffield project came a new label under which many famous jazz musicians recorded yet how many people know that Mr Grusin is the "G" in "GRP Records"...?
I couldn’t agree more! I am professional jazz musician and he has had more influence on me than any other composer. I flew to see him in Oakland a few weeks ago performing at yoshi’s and it was a priceless moment I will never forget
I had given up piano in middle school. It wasn't until I heard the soundtrack to The Firm that I realized how much I enjoyed playing, just not the music that my parents wanted me to learn. So, I bought a used piano and started lessons again after not playing for nearly 30 yrs. Two years later I played Ray's Blues in recital and purchased a new Yamaha upright studio. I'm still playing today.
I don’t know if this is the correct place (but if not here, then I wonder where?) to reflect in appreciation of Dave Grusin for his spectacularly unique creativity and magnificent musicianship. It has given me unending joy over so many years - I think going all the way back to when, as a boy growing up in Australia, I first heard the theme music to “It Takes A Thief” in the 60s. I believe I fell in love at that very moment; and I know for certain that I have remained faithful ever since; with my wonder, amazement and delight only increasing over the years with each new miracle of yours. Thank you, Dave Grusin
Yes from what I was told by a music writer was that the best film score writers were composers that could easily and smoothly transition from one dramatic scene to an entirely different mode of a movie were best fitted for production. Musical sound tracks were essential elements on the success or anticipated failure of a film. So I was informed or say it was the magic of the film industry at the time. Now it's more digital than human composition where as using musicians on real time in a studio while a large screen in the background to time the scenes or needed emotional engagement with music. Grusin was all that and kept his sanity from the film industry success by performances mixed-in with small jazz menus with guys like Dave Ritinour seen above - ua-cam.com/video/JErq8BuIMn8/v-deo.html
Too few people know of & appreciate the true musical treasure this man is. I've been following nearly 50 yrs, since the early 1970s & someone else commented on some of his music back into the '60s. Truly a legend!
Dave Grusin and a solo, live performance of his best movie theme song, IT MIGHT BE YOU (for "Tootsie" with lyrics by The Bergmans, Marilyn & Alan). One of my guitar heroes, Lee Ritenour, standing stage right, head bowed in awe at his friend's solo performance. That's Ritenour's Gibson ES-335 on the guitar stand next to Dave's Yamaha. But you knew that. There are two pianistic giants who composed great film music -- both described as "jazz pianists" but really, more than that: they are what I call 'spontaneous arrangers' -- a cut above all the others. We lost one of them, Andre Previn age 89 in January of 2019; here's the other one, as great as ever, you may agree!
SHOCKED... i just realized that Dave Grusin, writer of the legendary St. Elsewhere theme, also wrote this song! That moment when you realize that 2 of your all time favorite pieces, that you had never associated with each other, come from the same composer. Thanks for the wonderful upload. Dave knocked this performance out of the park.
Will Ritter, If you can find one, try to get a copy of his Sheffield label album from, I think, 1973. It was re-released in the 90s on CD. One of the best albums in the history of music. I've been listening to it for nearly 50 years. Love it to this day!
I always thought Stephen Bishop wrote this - how wrong can a guy be? Grusin has to be one of the goddamn loveliest pianists to listen to...I play his stuff to death on a daily basis.
Amazing ..!! . Dave's chords in this song are so wonderful... I can't catch it so perfectly, eventhough hearing this performance again, again n again.. 👍👍👍😯😍
I absolutely love it when a bridge just "fits". So many times, composers tend to use a bridge as an afterthought. Mr Grusin almost builds this composition around it. Such an amazingly talented songwriter, composer, and musician. Just saw him @ the Jacksonville Jazz Festival. He's an 89-year-old wonder. Thank you for the many years of beautiful music, sir.
"It Might Be You" Time... I've been passing time watching trains go by All of my life Lying on the sand watching sea birds fly Wishing there would be Someone waiting home for me Something's telling me it might be you It's telling me it might be you All of my life Looking back as lovers go walking past All of my life Wondering how they met and what makes it last If I found the place Would I recognize the face Something's telling me it might be you Yeah, it's telling me it might be you So many quiet walks to take So many dreams to make And with so much love to make I think we're gonna meet some time Maybe all we need is time... And it's telling me it might be you All of my life I've been saving love songs and lullabies And there's so much more No one's ever heard before Something's telling me it might be you Yeah, it's telling me it must be you And I'm feeling it'll just be you all of my life It's you, it's you I've been waiting for all of my life Maybe it's you (it's you), maybe it's you (it's you) I've been waiting for you all of my life Maybe it's you, maybe it's you I've been waiting for all of my life
I remember an interview in Keyboard magazine with DON Grusin, his brother... (Paraphrasing here...) On arranging - "He's the only guy I know who will start straight in writing a score IN INK ! On playing - "So precise - you can hear that the stems on the notes are absolutely vertical....." Listen to this number on the album "Cinemagic" - same lovely chords, but with huge strings.......bliss !
I'm correcting myself on my other comment. I thought Uwe Karcher played Dave Grusin's arrangement, but it was Dave doing all those fabulous piano improvisations!
I attended this concert. My ankle cracked @ 2:06 as I shifted legs. I can't believe the microphone picked up the sound. Surprised it wasn't edited out.... god how embarrassing.

It's hard to find the words to express what a talent this man is, I know that my world is a better place with Dave Grusin in it.
The world is definitely a better Crusin with Grusin!

Dave Grusin is a treasure to the world!
Absolute eargasm, what a joy, just beautiful one of my favourite TV Series.
I love how sensitively Grusin plays. A true artist.

Dave takes you to surprise places. You feel like the chord progression is going one way, and he takes you another. No one does it like Dave Grusin.
Bill Evans
@@StripeRich Pretty sure Dave would agree that he was influenced heavily by Bill Evans.
Divine! Fabulous pianist and composer.
❤️🙂👍Grusin's the best!!!!
How wonderful, to walk the planet with Dave Grusin.
Our Wedding Theme song, always loved Dave Grusin and of course Stephen Bishop.

Lovely, lovely, lovely, ... ! 😊👍 Who are those 10 people to fault this brilliant mans' playing?! 🤔
Splendid! 👍

Dave cowrote this song with Alan & Marilyn Bergman. I think Dave & the Bergmans go way back to the days of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66.
Very beauty tones and melody from Dave Grusin 🎹👍🎶🎵😘
I always thought Stephen Bishop wrote this - how wrong can a guy be? Grusin has to be one of the goddamn loveliest pianists to listen to...I play his stuff to death on a daily basis.
I also thought Stephen Bishop wrote this. Always thought it would be a great wedding song. Love Dave Grusin 's music.
@@tamaraclaw Imagine this as the couple's first dance.....

"It Might Be You"
Time...
I've been passing time watching trains go by
All of my life
Lying on the sand watching sea birds fly
Wishing there would be
Someone waiting home for me
Something's telling me it might be you
It's telling me it might be you
All of my life
Looking back as lovers go walking past
All of my life
Wondering how they met and what makes it last
If I found the place
Would I recognize the face
Something's telling me it might be you
Yeah, it's telling me it might be you
So many quiet walks to take
So many dreams to make
And with so much love to make
I think we're gonna meet some time
Maybe all we need is time...
And it's telling me it might be you
All of my life
I've been saving love songs and lullabies
And there's so much more
No one's ever heard before
Something's telling me it might be you
Yeah, it's telling me it must be you
And I'm feeling it'll just be you all of my life
It's you, it's you
I've been waiting for all of my life
Maybe it's you (it's you), maybe it's you (it's you)
I've been waiting for you all of my life
Maybe it's you, maybe it's you
I've been waiting for all of my life
