I love how Herbie and Pat give each other space. Guitarists and Pianists can sometimes struggle to play together though masters know when to drop out or play softly. I love this band more than life.
Tillery: Dave Holland continues to be one of the best jazz bassists. Hard to believe he's been playing jazz since the 1960s, challenging all the musicians and drummers he's performed with to play even better than they usually do.
I saw the same tour in Milan few weeks later, at that time I only knew Pat Metheny and Dave Holland cause I had a cd with Pat, Dave and Roy Haynes. After a couple of tunes I said WowI who's playing the piano? I remember some audience watched me saying Are you kidding?!? what the hell are you saying ,,, That concert changed my life ! These are titans at the top of their game. Dave Holland just killed on that solo and Pat is still playing his magical ES-175 with that satin-y pillow tone which he unfortunately moved away from some years later

Robert Langer That show in Toronto was at Roy Thompson Hall. The tour was in support of their album Parallel Realities. What I remember best about that night was the other shows that was going to happen later in the night. Mike Stern at George's Spaghetti House & Eric Johnson at The El Macombo. I was fortunate to see this show and cabbed it to be in time for Eric Johnson. A night I will never forget.
I dreaming to see these guys together again. Specially Herbie and Pat is my favorite musicians. And this repertoire is good: 9 over reggae, cantaloupe island, indigo dreams, jack in ... I searched different concerts of this band, because I wanted to hear different solos of each melody. They are super great. Interesting, how these guys together will sound now.

Herbie Herbie he absolutely killed it (IMO). The way his solo developed and the tension he creates then of course Holland comes in and he smashed it. Sorry I forgot to mention they are all monsters 😅

Reminds me of Tony William's drumming on The Sorcerer album. Appropriate considering Herbie. I even hear Herbie play some phrases I recognize from that album. That's cool, I guess in a way it's a slight homage to Miles Davis's memory since he made the tune his own, or so it's said.

I have so many experiences at gigs and jam sessions where the opposite happens and the two comp over each other. infuriating.

The snippet from 4:32 to like 4:40 from all 3 is off the hook.. I thought they would mess up first time I heard.
The best rhythm section, the best soloists all rolled into one.
The musicianship of these four is amazing. Equally amazing is how seamlessly they blend together, as if they had been playing together for a decade.

Dave Holland's solo is really musical and fabulous. Everyone on the band stand is great of course but to do that on Acoustic Bass is wonderful!

And a later Metheny collaborator, Antonio Sanchez. Sanchez used his left hand quite differently than De Jonhnette, but close your eyes and listen.
the way he sometimes hits the crash reminds me alot of the great Lars of Metallica, he was probably influenced by him.
