One of the few quality reels that i've had the pleasure to use. Not only is this a strong sturdy reel but if you adjust the magnetic cast control correctly to your correct settings you can really get some casting distance! I spooled it with 50lb blue braid backing to a 50lb top shot. I did this for increased lineage. In hindsight if i had to do it again i'd go all 30lb monofilament line or 65lb braid.
During casting practice i was only averaging 80-90yds. Going with a lighter weight line with smaller line diameter means less air resistance that should increase your casting distance greatly. My intent was to cast this from shore but you can either troll to bottom jigging off a boat with the Avets. I noticed this reel is extremely popular for jigging for tunas off charters.
I was only practicing casting this day. Used a 4oz bank on a 11ft Daiwa Heavy Emblem from Charley's Fishing Supply. I would've increased my casting range by using a 13ft MH Ulua Rod and increasing the bank weight to 5-7oz. I was at Waipio Soccer Field, the only area that i can practice near my home.

Try reading free spool then adjust your drag setting
That was on my first week so i really learned by doing that week. Thanks. Way different from my Newell 447's.
I use 65 braid on the MXL G2 and Raptor and get 90-120 yards in the surf with a 12 ft Battalion and 8 oz sinker. No reel is perfect. It is a set of design compromises, the quality of the Avet is very nice. I'd love it if Okuma put cast controls on the Cavalla.
Want my honest opinion? Look at Okuma's Alijos. Best casting reel for distance that has a beefy drag system. I tested the 12 & was told the 10 cast farther?! But a CC on a Cavalla might be a winner!

You don’t set your drag q on strike but on freespool setting. You will ruined it. Always turn your drag button on freespool.

Chris we caught a 5 pounder this weekend. I want to try the conventional reel. Are there other reels that have a magnetic braking system I can research?

Whats the difference between the MXL Raptor and MXJ Raptor?
Units are virtually identical in stats & price. If i was bottom jigging both are ok though the MXJ tends to be more narrow. If you cast more go for the usually wider MXL. Like i said all personal preference.
Hi have avets and the only thing I don’t like about them is the handle bind at high drag.
Is that on certain models? After a year i kinda gave up on them.
