  • The One Thing People NEVER Understand About Fat Cyclists.
Most people seem to think that the only reason us fat cyclists ride is to loose weight. I can tell you now, this is not always true.

I'm in my late sixties and, luckily, I have never been overweight. I have, however, suffered from anxiety and depression for most of my adult life. The bike has been my prescription! I've taken a range of medication over the years but none comes close to what the bike does for me. It,as you say, makes me happy. Thanks for the videos.

Fair play to you sir, I may only be 47 but I hope not only to make it to 73 and beyond but also to still be cycling like you. You remind me of a chap of a similar age that was riding in a charity bike ride with me of a similar age to you that I rode in many years ago and I said the same thing to him as I said to you that at the same age I hope I'll be able to do the same thing myself as it's a thing I really enjoy.

Weight loss requires a caloric deficit, eat less calories, and combine with riding and resistance training. This past year i lost 60lbs, and it required eating less and moving more. The prior 2 years i rode the same distance, but didnt change diet, only lost 10lbs and gained it right back.

Im 62 as well. To rattle around Englands bumpy rural roads is a tonic for me, for all the reasons you pointed out. My bike currently shod wirh 40mm tyres inflated to 60 psi. I dont concern myself about potholes. A lot of my mates are on Zwift and they seem to enjoy it which is nice, ive tried but its not my bag. Occasionally i cycle on very windy days, very wet days and even down a very muddy bridleway just to see if i can. At 62 i laugh at the whole situation and am thankful i can do it. I genuinely spare a thought for all those who for whatever reason are unable to endulge in our pastime. Leonard, im sure you deliver joy and make people happy. Great job boi!

Another "heart to heart" video, Leonard. I couldn't have said it better & couldn't agree with you more. I am 59, overweight, and have been cycling for about 15 years. I do it for no other reason than the pure enjoyment of it. Driving through an area and riding a bike through the same area are two very different experiences. There's something much more intimate in the latter. I'd have to say that cycling also does indeed boost my mental/emotional well-being, not to mention feeds my sense of adventure. After all, there are so many more places one can explore on a bicycle than in a car. Thanks for expressing it so well. It's always a joy to know that someone else "gets it/us!"

Now, it's 2023 and I feel pretty much what you're saying. I’m not out to prove anything, I have a 3-speed Brompton and can often be found cycling and walking beside my little bike along the country lanes around where I live. I’ve done several tours on the little Brompton, including LeJog, walking any hills I couldn’t ride - who cares? It’s all fresh air and exercise and it keeps my head free of stress and worry. Nothing justifies a good bevvy like a bike ride.
It's great to do some sort of exercise to get fit, and cycling is the only one that ticks all these boxes:
    - you can do it on your own or with other people
    - you can do it on the way to work or to the shops
    - you can be competitive or not
    - you can start at home and stop at the pub on the way back home
    - you can learn more about the places near you, and be like a tourist in your own county.
I get loads more smiles when I'm riding my bike than either walking or driving,
and I see much more good driving when I'm on my bike than in my car.

I've done a fair amount of personal maths concerning weight-loss and cycling with my weight struggle. (Actually let me rephrase that. I struggle to stop eating/drinking too much).
    My maths.....
People who think they can cycle a bit, recreationally, to lose weight are kidding themselves. 1 Pound of fat = 3,500cals (k/cals to be accurate). Fat is where the weight is.
Unfortunate fact #1: 3,500cals is equivalent to 3.5 hours of EXTREME cycling. My guess is that you may burn 1,000cals an hour by climbing Alpe d'Huez, and even then you'll get to the top in under 2 hours.
Unfortunate fact #2: You don't burn fat when you have carbs in your belly. So, if you have a nice breakfast, to set you up for that recreational hour cycling, your body will burn those carbs first. Rewarding yourself with a nice lunch on your return will keep you away from your fat reserves. Burning fat is a bit of a last resort for your body.
In my Audax days I would genuinely lose 1 pound of weight/fat for every 100km I rode. (That held pretty much true for 100/200/300/400/600/1200km Audaxes).
People say that you can't out-ride your mouth. That's not the case. You CAN out-ride your mouth, but you need to cycle a bloody long way. It's still a lot easier not to eat 1000cals than it is to cycle it away from your fat reserves (remember that you need to get through those carbs first).
So yes, cycle for pleasure and overall fitness, but don't get depressed. or surprised, if recreational cycling doesn't make the pounds fall off. That needs a lifestyle change.
Fasting and Intermittent Fasting works for me, because it directly targets fat, and therefore weight, but without the negatives of "Reduced Calorie Counting" (which genuinely never works long-term).
Great channel.. Keep cycling. Hope to see you out on the road one day.

Great video and you have really got the essence of why a lot of people ride a bike. Not just fat or overweight people all sorts of people. Riding a bike is simply fun and it gets you out and about in the fresh air and countryside in a way that only rambling or hiking does. The media loves to make cyclists a target of abuse because of the enrage and engage marketing that makes them money but cyclists aren't any different than motorists or pedestrians they are just people moving about actually. I keep riding into my 60's now and I do it because I like it. No I am not fool enough to think I am going out to beat anyone or prove how fit I am I realise that is all past me now. I admit overtaking cars stuck in traffic is fun though makes me happy to see those sad miserable fat in a can types complaining about cyclists not giving them 1.5 m passing space. Never too late too fat too unfit to cycle just enjoy dont set big expectations for yourself just do it and if you like it keep it up

First, this comment is not my intent to put you down because you are over weight. I have followed you for over a year now and I know you ride a bike Hell of a lot. So it would seem to me that naturally you should be losing weight. This makes me think the reason you haven't lost weight is because your food choices or eating habits are poor. I don't understand why you focus on being fit by exercising but don't apply some of that mentality to the foods then too. I guess in a sense I do understand because I ride a lot too and I justify being able to eat cinnamon rolls or sweets and just tell myself I will work it off on the bike. But then a lot of times I can't go out for a ride because of the weather and then I start to gain weight. I think eating habits and diet are a tough one to control. I also tell myself you only live once and I want to enjoy some of the culinary pleasures life has to offer. I too could stand to loose about 25 pounds because I am starting to experience difficulty keeping my pants up. 😁All that said, I think it's cool that you do go out and bust your butt on the bike everyday. Keep it up.👍👍

Even though ive got a strong cardio system im slow on a bike so can identify with this. There is this big tendency with many cyclists to treat every ride like its a bloody race and not really enjoy being in the moment and the journey itself.

Yep. You’re absolutely right about cycling for enjoyment and our own mental health. Sure I like getting fitter or like working up an appetite (esp if there’s fresh pie) or sometimes challenging myself, but even if cycling had no impact on my physical health, I’d do it just because it’s enjoyable. I work from home too and it’s the enjoyment of cycling that gets me out.
Our big lake is now frozen and Tuesday was sunny, calm, and the snow/ice crust was firm. The lake is about 870 square km, 65 km long, and can be wide enough you can’t see the far shore. I cycled on it for three hours, visited a small town, looped around some treed rocky islands (think Group of Seven style paintings).
I loved the freedom of being able to ride anywhere and still not see people. Theoretically I could maybe ride down a major river and end up in Georgian Bay on the Great Lakes (that’s over a 100 km one way, and there are rapids so practically I probably couldn’t make it the entire way). But just the idea of winding my way up some river in the middle of mostly unpopulated country is exciting enough to drag me off the couch and/or away from the computer. It’s all about the enjoyment, not about calories burned or fitness goals attained. And cycling on the lake under a full moon so far out you can’t hear any city noises…well, it’s an experience I try for every bright moon, even if I can only ski out rather than bike. I could also bike in another lake and series of rivers/small lakes and end up in our nation’s capital 300-400 km later (great canoe route in summer). Not that I will but the idea that I could go on that adventure gives me goosebumps (and no cars to worry about).
Tomorrow will be different enjoyment. The local cycle shop owner said they’ll have the riding trails along the ski hill and the escarpment groomed by Saturday. I’ve never cycled them, not even in summer (just hiked). I’m excited to try it (maybe even a bit of socializing with the cycle shop folks if I see them).
What makes these things more precious is that I’m now early 60s and I know these type of rides will increasingly run up against the frailties of aging. But I’ll keep going out till I can’t, and then I’ll do different types of rides till I can’t, and then adapt again to easier rides still, because cycling is so enjoyable I feel slightly sorry for people who don’t cycle. They’re missing out on so much.

Many people say doing some exercise, helps you feeling stronger and better. Also my doctor said I should exercise more. I'm 6'1" and weigh 10st 3lbs so not overweight but I am prone to health anxiety but a couple of hours/20 miles on the bike makes me think that if I can do that there can't be much wrong with me. As a sole carer I am not able to get out more once a week depending on the weather, sometimes it is less than that in the winter but whenever time and the weather allows I do go out. The majority of those overweight are not at blame for being overweight.

    • @GTMarmot
      @GTMarmot Рік тому +1

It's ALL genetic. Why did you (like most of us) give up skateboarding, roller skating, ice skating, etc.? People forget when they get old. Only the best in any activity ever persist, because the fact they're so good at it (because of genetics) means they get much more reward out of it. If you're no good, you try and try and then stop and do something else... Now, what happened to those people who were naturally good at sports? They got older, and they're still the best at every athletic activity. They can turn their hand to anything new and will be the best at that, too. So why start competing with them at 50+. You already did it, decades ago. Life is a genetic lottery - some will be better and some worse - and it's no good playing the same games with the same boys (only older) as you once did. Longevity is also genetic.

If it is really just about enjoying your ride, why do you ride a road bike? just about the most aggressive and unhealthy possible geometry (short of something aerodiculous) for your physique? Why do you wear aerodynamic clothing? When faced with cycling choices, you are, at nearly every juncture, choosing to model yourself on people who are paid to race bicycles professionally of all things - young people with 32kg upper bodies! Hi Leonard, I stumbled across your UA-cam channel recently. Earlier this year I had a neurological issue (probably caused by stress) and consequently lost my driving licence (Medically) as such I was forced to find alternative transport to work and decided on a bike. To start with it was absolutely exhausting and I didn't think I could carry on - however as time went on I got fitter and stronger and then got the cycling bug (bigtime) - but I do carry a bit of weight and always have done and have always been comfortable with it (never caused me any health issues). Anyway long story short I now ride a GravelBike (only on road) and am obsessed (in a healthy way) with watching cycling videos and ALL of your have really inspired me to just be me and not try to be the stereotypical lycra clad Adonis that I thought you had to be - There needs to be more positive people like you in this world!
