  • Why Are You Still Fat?
Many people take up cycling to lose weight and for a lot of them, riding a bike has certainly helped them lose a few kilos. However, for some people, it doesn't matter how much they ride their bikes or how hard or fast they cycle, they are still overweight.
One of the question I am frequently asked is why are you still fat if you ride a bike? The answer s very simple: its because losing weight is more about what you eat than how much you cycle.
Losing weight is actually 80% diet and only 20% exercise so even if you cycle hundreds of kilometres a week but don't eat healthily, it will be very difficult to lose weight.

Great video! I was literally 100kg when I started cycling around 5 years ago. I was pretty self conscious at the start and just wore t shirt and leggings but soon got fitter and the weight dropped off. I'm around 65kg now so lost so much weight and it's cycling and plant based diet that have helped do that :)

I got back into it more to build my conditioning back up. I've done hiking and mountaineering for years, but it has gotten really hard on my feet so got back into mountain biking as a way to build my endurance back up (and hopefully lose some weight) without pounding my feet to hell and back.

Leonard, your videoes became my inspiration for taking up cycling for longer rides and with more intensity, and yes, I lost a lot of weight this year, fine, but first and foremost, I became a much more happy 60-year young guy because I re-found cycling in nature, filming wild life, and enjoying the tours and the exercise. Thank you, Leonard, for your always well made, eloquently narrated cycling videos - I always look forward to your next video !

Dear Leonard, you are very articulate. When i was young and skinny racer...yes i looked down on fat people. Little did i know i would join their ranks in my 30s. highest lifetime weight ever was 245. mostly since 2020 i have been in the 215-225 range. However last christmas and this spring i ballooned up to 240. Honestly i felt dreadful. so i determined to go for 180 pounds, a whopping 25 percent decrease in body weight. Joined weight watchers (been on it before). dropped 15 pounds in 2 weeks but eating under my "points" and then stabilized at 225 for a week. My schedule is to drop 2 pounds a week. Feeling better already. by the way, at 215 this last year i could ride 100 km at 26 / km / hour. did 4000 km. this year with the extra weight i go about 1 -1.5 hours at 20 km/ hour. also have a sore neck (unrelated). So for sure baggage slows me down. Now i view rides as gentle workouts to gradually start getting back into shape. If anyone is reading this far, a steady sensible pace that you can keep maintaining is better than trying to zoom (for overweight people)... just put time in the saddle.
Please keep up the good posting.

I think this ordinary overweight is totally lost in the extreme narratives between buff dudes, anorexia and my 600 lbs life. I think most on social Media really don't consider that maaaaany people that are slim in their 20 s don't know how to lose weight either, that it's always hard. Many will slowly but surely gain 3kg here 5 there until it's a bit of an issue. I always notice this looking at old photos of older folks. They all were slim in their 20s, 30s often 40s.

'No one is perfect' A truer word never spoken Sir! I have had weight issues since a chubby 15 years old, being good at football and cricket, the 'slim' kids used it as a weapon to bring me down. I'm 58 now and still have body issues. I know it's a mental thing cos others tell me different. I cycle train and weight train for my other track sport and still beat myself up every now and again. Scarred by my tormenters - it's stuck with me 'mentally' for good now! The fact that you're getting out there on your bike and riding it like a proper rider is very inspiring to many. I would be honoured to ride along side you Sir! Keep with it and ride well!

As a person who has been obese most of his adult life, but managed to lose 50 or more pounds five times, I know for a fact your comments about diet in addition to exercise is spot on.
I'm now a senior citizen who had ignored diabetes for a decade before having a mild stroke in 2015. When in the hospital with the stroke, they detected that I'd also previously had a heart attack due to two completely blocked arteries. After having an ICD installed in my heart in early 2016, I asked three doctors (GP, Cardiologist and Cardio surgeon), if I could start to exercise at least slowly. All three said yes but rolled their eyes. I just love motivation. At that time I was 233lbs (6ft tall).
I made three major changes, I started to walk(6 days) and eventually run/walk (3+3) six days a week, started eating healthier (mostly stir-fries) with reduced portions and cut out all bread and junk foods. I still eat meat but included more seafood than before.
This worked well and I got down to 180lbs by 2020. The winters always messed up my workouts (Arctic Vortex is as bad as it sounds) and I'd end up gaining 6 or more pounds during that time. Not to mention lost motivation after the holidays, which is historically dangerous for me.
In the fall of 2020 I purchased a bike (Trek FX2 workout hybrid) and an indoor trainer Saris H3. Those purchases were a revelation as I no longer gained weight in the winter plus am down to 165-160lbs with a body fat 14-12%.
I ride either indoors or out, weather dependent, 3 days a week and run 5km on the alternate three days (all year around). I've reduced my diabetes meds down to 25% of the 2015 amount with an A1C in the "pre-diabetic" range.
In 2020, when I first road my bike I was on a wide open stretch of bike path when I noticed that my face was hurting. It took me a moment or two to realize I had been grinning from ear to ear for so long my face muscles hurt. That was the moment I realized I'd found an enjoyable low-impact sport, that I could do when high-impact running was no longer an option.
My Grandfather was known to have cycled at least until he was 83 years old but he'd never been obese. This last December I picked up my first road bike (Trek Domane Gen4 SL5) as I've focused on endurance riding doing 70+km three times a week and hope to do that this outdoor season as well. Being retired you consider every day to be Saturday ;)
I hope others, who struggle with weight loss, can derive some inspiration from my own experience.
Thanks for your contributions to the cycling community.

I lost more than 40 pounds once around 15 years ago. It was funny though since it wasn't planned at all, I wasn't really dieting, and I was only at 182 to begin with for 71". I was just running a lot and I randomly changed some things for what I was eating. I did gain all that back after a couple of years, and that was mostly due to dropping the running for a few years, before I started with the bikes again. But I'll tell you, when I was keeping under 140 pounds at my height, it looked kind of scary! Anyway, I'm right in the high 170s now and that's reasonable for me and under 25 BMI.

Hi Leonard, i´ve been watching some of your videos and what caught my attention was your positive disposition and just wanting to do something that you love, in this case riding a bike. In all my years of cycling i met several people who just gave up on the exercise because they weren´t getting any results ie weight loss, and they don´t realize riding a bike is so much more than just losing weight.
I am a 42 year old man who loves riding a mountain bike everywhere, i´ve been riding all my life and started with an old rusty second hand bike in my sixth birthday, it was a present given by my loving Mom.
Since then i just got more and more in love with the idea of just going anywhere without spending any money for the trip, i mean the sense of freedom is just amazing and having fun with friends is just so rewarding, if you are planing any trip soon just spend a week or two in Portugal, thats where i live, here you can find amazing routes for all your bike rides, try Sintra, the Lisbon area and Algarve, the route to Fatima, and the amazing region of Douro the wine country.
So keep riding, keep making the videos, i think you are an inspiration to people who are not sure if riding a bike is a good idea, the videos will help them make the decision.

leonardmlee, 53 years old lost 25 kg going low carb diet 5 years ago and kept it down. . Then started once I got into cycling a lot more to take carbs but restricting them more to when it made sense, just before, during and immediately after. Or for events in days preceding too.
What the low carb diet did for me is to allow me to loose fear of fat, stick to good ones of course, and also I lost the fear of going hungry and thinking of food as much. I think you will find it equally useful. Give it at least a try for 5 weeks, winter now is perfect time.

I’m going to tell my story about losing weight. I started with a weight of 127kg.......my wife has been diagnosed with diabetes type 2 in april this year. The advies to her was to look after what you eat, how much you eat and def no sugars anymore. We’d also eat first white bread......now we eat coarse whole grain bread instead. I support her diet plan she was given....so I started the same as her......(sorry for my bad english.....dutch guy) in the period from april to july I lost about 15kg of body weight by only to keep an eye on my food......in july I bought a bike to fasten up the losing weight proces. .....it kinda works....I was a bit bummed why my weight didn’t go down as fast than i didn’t ride my bike.....but that was pretty simple .....muscle development. Now in about 8 months time, I lost 23kg of weight! Just by watching my food and riding my bike. I try to go out on my bike twice a week and do about 50 tot 75km’s per ride.....
Another thing.....if i’m on my bike...i use sugars...like an enerybar or energygel......my drink while i’m on the road is an isostar drink wich also contains sugar.....as said...I use this only when i’m biking! If i’m not on the bike is evertything sugar free......as much as possible though.
But I understand your point Lennart.......if you are feelings happy as you are ...be that way.....do nothing what other people expect from you. Do what you like! Best regards Rob

I just turned 60. I used to race MTB and did well until my heart decided that it had had enough and slowed me down. My retirement plan included racing in 100 mile races in the states and basically do all the races I couldn't do while working. When I realized i wouldn't be able to do that I got a little depressed and developed some unhealthy habits( beer) and put on a bit of weight(currently 230 lbs). I'm coming around now tho. I couldn't care less about what people think of me...I'm old, fat and bitter (smile) but I love riding a bicycle. I really enjoy your channel and wish i was a well spoken as you.

When I started cycling I was hoping to loose weight but it wasn’t my main motivation, I actually ended up putting on weight due to overcompensating with my food following a hard effort on the bike.
After a couple of years of static weight despite cycling improvements, I came to the conclusion that trying to get better on the bike and loose weight at the same time are not compatible goals.
I’ve spent the last three months focusing on weight loss and not done very much on the bike at all, no hard efforts just very low intensity turbo sessions.
I’ve managed to loose 60 lbs and am now looking forward to putting in some real training on the bike, and being able to fuel properly before and after.
I may be able to fit into regular size cycle clothing now, but will probably always see myself as a fat cyclist, anyone on a bike has to be a good thing.
Keep up the good work Leonard.

I agree 100 percent. Ride more-eat less will result in weight loss. Exercise alone (from personal experience), usually will not. For me, following the Weight Watchers program (I got their printed info and never joined or attended any meetings), resulted in a 30lb weight loss over several months (I continued to ride, of course). Weight Watchers is simply a "portion control" program that worked for me (it may not work for others). Anyway, maintain that positive attitude and keep on pedaling! Best regards.

At 61, I'm 5'9"and weigh around 89 kilos. Last year I was 93 kilos so I have lost some weight, but at 89k for some reason it's stopped. Not that I'm complaining or on a major crash diet or anything, but my weakness is that I am a chocoholic, always have been, I just love the stuff! But watching this vlog I've definitely decided don't worry too much about it. As you say, exercise regularly and don't stuff yourself too much and you should be OK! Next summer I may try to attempt to get to 85 kilos, but I'll still be eating a small amount of choccy!!

I am very fit, strong and athletic looking as i am lifting weight, swimming and running too (although cycling is my fave and i cycle regularly even during winter), but i don't judge anyone by its look - especially because most of the cyclists i know are taking all kind of chemicals and sugars to get some extra performance (i wonder how long they'll live), so for me the most important is HEALTH, so do what you like and eat what you like and as much as you like but stay healthy my friend! Try ketogenic diet if you want to lose some fat and build muscle but eat enough, lack of nutrients make damage not surplus - carbs are exception though as carbs create gut inflammation, insulin rise and belly fat build, so lower the carbs in any case, especially grains!

Once again a fabulous video full of honesty and good humor. Maintaining a great self image and accepting who you are is mandatory for physical and mental health. I am 67 and started cycling heavily about 3 -4 years ago when I had several close friends get sick suddenly and die in short order and others started with the knee and hip replacement procedures as sports injuries, excessive jogging, and obesity beat the hell out of their joints. Cycling brings an enormous amount of joy and sense of accomplishment after climbing the steep grade, finishing the long ride and enjoying nature.I also modified my diet significantly and suddenly BP became perfect, cholesterol dropped to very low levels and blood work became perfect. Weight fell to same weight I was when I graduated college 45 years ago. If you feel comfortable with yourself and your general health is good then you are doing it correctly. I ride as much as my schedule will allow (about 50-60 miles/week at my best and less 10/week at my worst). My love of cycling outweighs my concern for what others may think of me in lycra, but I do admit that when my weight pendulum is in the upswing, the depression creeps in and pushes me down. And yet, I will ride; today, tomorrow, next week, whenever I can manage the time for it. I will ride because it makes me feel good. Thanks for making a video on this topic. I hear so many people make the same mistakes over and over. Even fitness apps and programmes talk about "fat burning zones". I even still hear people saying that exercising their core will focus weight loss on their tummy. Sigh.
But what frustrates me more is then people use the information that exercise doesn't have much direct impact on weight to justify a bad lifestyle. Exercise is still incredibly important. The three main improvements being circulation, mobility and mental health. And all of those have knock-on benefits that create a virtuous cycle (no pun intended). And as you touch on in the video, mental health is key to losing weight, especially if you have a lot to lose.

    • @jollygoodvelo
      @jollygoodvelo  5 років тому

Well, there is the fat burning zone but it only works if you aren't adding to the fat stores at a greater rate than you are burning it. Must admit that I fell into that one too.

    • @IAmCharliemouse
      @IAmCharliemouse 5 років тому

leonardmlee Sure. It’s not total fiction. There are heart rates that optimise calorie consumption, but it’s a percentage point here and there. Overwhelmingly one should care about intake for weight loss. Fussing over heart rate, one could argue, might actually cause stress to the point of just giving up, especially for the marginal gains. And it’s been shown stress hormones block weight loss mechanisms.
Anyway, I feel we have gone down a rabbit hole. Your message, and video, are spot on!

A great many true words there Leonard. I've been a keen cyclist all my days. I've also been a keen beer drinker and cake eater, but I never let my passion for food interfere with my cycling. The doctor however didn't care much for my philosophy and told me one day I was a mere fraction from being diabetic. That was over six years ago so I took control and lost over six stones. I dropped the weight and carried on with my cycling. I do however look back on my chubbier days with much fondness, those days when I ate what I liked and just kept peddling. Now when the temperature drops I almost freeze to death and the wind blows me about like a leaf. I'm healthier, I look better, but I do miss the stops at the odd cafe for coffee and cake.

First off, I would never knock anyone who rides. Cycling is consider a "thin person's" sport by most outside of cycling, but in reality it is a great sport/exercise for about anyone ages 3-103 due to the fact that it is fun and is low impact. There are very few medical issues that prevent you from riding a bike.
As for losing weight, I think cycling is one of the best exercises to lose weight. It is fun, thus easier to stick to. Almost anyone can do it. It burns calories faster than almost anything else. At just a moderate pace you can burn anywhere from 400-1000 calories an hour cycling. Of course, like you said, it only takes a donut or two (or other poor choice) to undo that hour ride. Weight loss should be mainly achieved through diet, but not too restrictive. If you greatly restrict your caloric intake you will eventually fail. Instead, cut down 200 calories or so off your BMR a day and let exercise, such as cycling, be an added caloric deficit "bonus".
Also, even if you don't lose weight exercising, the benefits of exercise are not limited to potential weight loss. You will be happier, more energetic, stress levels will go down, you will be healthier (even if still overweight), you'll find activities done in the bed room improve, and the list goes on and on. It is depressing to see people focus solely on weight loss when they start exercising and then quit when they don't see weight coming off as fast as they want.
I think you hit the nail on the head towards the end of this video. Your happiness is what is most important. What others think ultimately means nothing unless you allow it to bother you.

Love the way you talked about the acceptance issue. So many people seem to think in extremes either way. My only addition (kind if a critique) is that excessive fat is usually a symptom of a health issue and not a health issue in itself. It may not be a huge health issue but just imbalances. Which are usually fixed with moderation, clean eating, staying active and sleep. So your still spot on but it changes the angle you look at it a bit.

Superb realistic and self-aware video. Whilst cycling on its own will not shift the lard it is always a good start. A minimum of 150 minutes of getting mildly out of breath per week has massive health benefits - especially blood pressure, stress relief, and the warding off of type 2 diabetes. Cycling is also low impact on the joints and this is very important if you are on the chunky size.

Spot on. I’ve been both skinny and fat while being an avid rider. One thing regular riding will do that helps is to build muscle which increases the amount of calories you burn at rest. A regular riding habit also helps with the motivation to sustain healthy changes in diet.

I like and subscribe to the term Clydesdale. I took up cycling last year because of a diagnosis of congestive heart failure on top of my diabetes and morbid obesity. My health issue's are self inflicted and also self correcting. I am thoroughly enjoying riding my ebike and am grateful for the available pedal assist that make my daily rides less work and more fun. My weight is a big issue because there are few bikes with the payload capacity l need. I'm 66 and plan to ride until my last days. I even use my bike for grocery shopping and all short distance (under 10 miles) errands and using my car and truck less.

A lack of fitness does not make you fat, stuffing your face on the other hand does. Great video Leonard. I'm in my 50's, I love all the wrong foods but I enjoy my cycling :)

For me it was stomach surgery that changed my life (and weight). I used to be 125kg and was down to 70kg in a year after my surgery, I just managed to do it by my 50th birthday (fit by 50 as my wife said) and now 2 years later I am sitting around 72kg constantly with cycling daily. Bariatric surgery (sleeve surgery in my case) in Cyprus was under $5k and it was the smartest money I spent in my life. You say you would go bonkers with a new diet and I understand that, but when your stomach is smaller and you cant eat as fast, it takes just as long to eat smaller meals and you feel just as full so the experience is very similar. With surgery there are also no limits on the type of food you can eat after the first year so its not a "diet", I never feel like I am missing out on anything, in fact I find I can treat myself more than I used to now because the portion sizes are so small. I still have a sugar addiction but its very easy to control now.
Surgery is not for everyone of course but I am here to say that in my case (and my wife's too) it has been absolutely transformational and I have no regrets whatsoever.

I went from 170 lbs to 125 lbs this year. I did change my eating habits as well as biking. I am definitely not on a DIET. I too like to eat! I encourage anyone to get out and just enjoy their ride. The weight loss is secondary. Thanks again for being so transparent.

I think the word diet can be very misleading as it suggests something hard for a shorter period of time. It should be more of a lifestyle change.

@@jollygoodvelo I agree wholeheartedly. That is what I respond when people ask if I'm on a diet. I say to them no I just changed my lifestyle! Thanks again.

Leonard I admire how you get out there and grind it out having a great time. I'm overweight too. People riding just to lose weight are missing out on a lot. Wednesday out on the KATY trail in Missouri; an absolutely glorious sunny fall day riding with my friends. Thank you for your videos.

To be fair, I think many people who ride to lose weight also enjoy their cycling. I’ve heard a lot about the Katy trail. I must look it up.

I get this question all the time. I run daily for a year now and actually lost 50lbs without changing my diet. But I think it's because it was such a slow steady lost that no one really noticed. Either way, I'm happy to stay active and thankful for my body to allow me to do the things I want to do.

    • @jollygoodvelo

50lbs is still a lot of weight to lose. I'm surprised no one has really noticed it.

I am still fat but I really enjoy riding my bike. I did lose about 20lbs, though, I really wasn't trying. I think it's because on long rides I lose my appetite. Keep making videos, you are an inspiration.

As always Lenny you’re honest & humorous, (politician comment made me spit my tea out laughing.) I like you am in my 50’s, I’m fairly over weight but love to ride bikes. Uphill I’m one of the slower ones in our group.
But having done lots of power lifting as a youngster, I still have quite strong legs. So I can normally burn most of the guys on the last couple of mile sprint even the younger ones. It seems carrying a little weight and having bigger legs has its benefits. I’m no Peter Sagan but I really look forward to that last couple of mile, it really does make the ride for me and normally leads to lots of friendly post ride rivalry & banter.
I don’t think you have to be as fit and as lean as a GC contender. Just enjoy riding your bike, what ever shape you are. As you say it has to have more health benefits than sitting on the sofa. It definitely has with me, I feel better now than I did in my 40’s!
    Cheers. 👍

Yes i entirely agree but like u said it’s what you put in you’re mouth that makes the difference and you are what you eat and I’ve always believed moderation in everything you eat and drink I know I have lost weight since getting back on the bike I used to weigh around 80 kg now iam around 75 to 76 kg .i eat pretty well and not a big drinker iv always been pretty active ever since I was 8yrs old .great channel you make a lot of sense very informative Leonard good one stay safe keep doing it .😊🚴‍♂️

You are spot on as regards diet , Lance used to say he often went to bed hungry
I live in Cornwall and subject to freedom of movement I am looking to retire and relocate permanently to Piedmont in Italy next year by renting an apartment close to Turin .
The Alps are on the doorstep for brilliant cycling, hopefully some good groups to join also .

You can not lose a lot of weight by exercising. You must change your eating/food lifestyle. Many people that change one habit, start to change others. I love your honesty, and these videos.

Good video. Now that I'm 75 it's getting harder to keep the weight off. I'm 6'2 and 200lbs. I still ride 60-80 miles a week, but I like my snacks. My story when I was 40, I was out of shape and 215 lbs, then I started riding in earnest. I entered my first 2 stage bike race after only 2 weeks training (not recommended) but managed to come away with a medal for my age class. I joined a local cycle club and piled on mega miles with nearly 4000 miles ridden in that first year. By the end of that first year I weighed in at 160 lbs. I could eat everything in sight and could not gain. Now, with the effects of age and fewer miles, I ride to maintain my health and clear my brain.

I'm turning 50 in 5 years. I'm a cycling enthusiast (XC MTB), a musician, and obviously obese. But my disposition in life is happy and content. I believe I have accomplished much at my age, career-wise and I'm lauded within my social circle. Best of all, I'm blessed with a wife 5 beautiful children. So at this point, I don't care what negative people think about me, just let them be until karma hits. Plain and simple. More power to you, kind Sir!
