  • Why Are You Still Fat?
Many people take up cycling to lose weight and for a lot of them, riding a bike has certainly helped them lose a few kilos. However, for some people, it doesn't matter how much they ride their bikes or how hard or fast they cycle, they are still overweight.
One of the question I am frequently asked is why are you still fat if you ride a bike? The answer s very simple: its because losing weight is more about what you eat than how much you cycle.
Losing weight is actually 80% diet and only 20% exercise so even if you cycle hundreds of kilometres a week but don't eat healthily, it will be very difficult to lose weight.

Great video! I was literally 100kg when I started cycling around 5 years ago. I was pretty self conscious at the start and just wore t shirt and leggings but soon got fitter and the weight dropped off. I'm around 65kg now so lost so much weight and it's cycling and plant based diet that have helped do that :)

I got back into it more to build my conditioning back up. I've done hiking and mountaineering for years, but it has gotten really hard on my feet so got back into mountain biking as a way to build my endurance back up (and hopefully lose some weight) without pounding my feet to hell and back.

leonardmlee, 53 years old lost 25 kg going low carb diet 5 years ago and kept it down. . Then started once I got into cycling a lot more to take carbs but restricting them more to when it made sense, just before, during and immediately after. Or for events in days preceding too.
What the low carb diet did for me is to allow me to loose fear of fat, stick to good ones of course, and also I lost the fear of going hungry and thinking of food as much. I think you will find it equally useful. Give it at least a try for 5 weeks, winter now is perfect time.

I’m going to tell my story about losing weight. I started with a weight of 127kg.......my wife has been diagnosed with diabetes type 2 in april this year. The advies to her was to look after what you eat, how much you eat and def no sugars anymore. We’d also eat first white bread......now we eat coarse whole grain bread instead. I support her diet plan she was given....so I started the same as her......(sorry for my bad english.....dutch guy) in the period from april to july I lost about 15kg of body weight by only to keep an eye on my food......in july I bought a bike to fasten up the losing weight proces. .....it kinda works....I was a bit bummed why my weight didn’t go down as fast than i didn’t ride my bike.....but that was pretty simple .....muscle development. Now in about 8 months time, I lost 23kg of weight! Just by watching my food and riding my bike. I try to go out on my bike twice a week and do about 50 tot 75km’s per ride.....
Another thing.....if i’m on my bike...i use sugars...like an enerybar or energygel......my drink while i’m on the road is an isostar drink wich also contains sugar.....as said...I use this only when i’m biking! If i’m not on the bike is evertything sugar free......as much as possible though.
But I understand your point Lennart.......if you are feelings happy as you are ...be that way.....do nothing what other people expect from you. Do what you like! Best regards Rob

'No one is perfect' A truer word never spoken Sir! I have had weight issues since a chubby 15 years old, being good at football and cricket, the 'slim' kids used it as a weapon to bring me down. I'm 58 now and still have body issues. I know it's a mental thing cos others tell me different. I cycle train and weight train for my other track sport and still beat myself up every now and again. Scarred by my tormenters - it's stuck with me 'mentally' for good now! The fact that you're getting out there on your bike and riding it like a proper rider is very inspiring to many. I would be honoured to ride along side you Sir! Keep with it and ride well!

As a person who has been obese most of his adult life, but managed to lose 50 or more pounds five times, I know for a fact your comments about diet in addition to exercise is spot on.
I'm now a senior citizen who had ignored diabetes for a decade before having a mild stroke in 2015. When in the hospital with the stroke, they detected that I'd also previously had a heart attack due to two completely blocked arteries. After having an ICD installed in my heart in early 2016, I asked three doctors (GP, Cardiologist and Cardio surgeon), if I could start to exercise at least slowly. All three said yes but rolled their eyes. I just love motivation. At that time I was 233lbs (6ft tall).
I made three major changes, I started to walk(6 days) and eventually run/walk (3+3) six days a week, started eating healthier (mostly stir-fries) with reduced portions and cut out all bread and junk foods. I still eat meat but included more seafood than before.
This worked well and I got down to 180lbs by 2020. The winters always messed up my workouts (Arctic Vortex is as bad as it sounds) and I'd end up gaining 6 or more pounds during that time. Not to mention lost motivation after the holidays, which is historically dangerous for me.
In the fall of 2020 I purchased a bike (Trek FX2 workout hybrid) and an indoor trainer Saris H3. Those purchases were a revelation as I no longer gained weight in the winter plus am down to 165-160lbs with a body fat 14-12%.
I ride either indoors or out, weather dependent, 3 days a week and run 5km on the alternate three days (all year around). I've reduced my diabetes meds down to 25% of the 2015 amount with an A1C in the "pre-diabetic" range.
In 2020, when I first road my bike I was on a wide open stretch of bike path when I noticed that my face was hurting. It took me a moment or two to realize I had been grinning from ear to ear for so long my face muscles hurt. That was the moment I realized I'd found an enjoyable low-impact sport, that I could do when high-impact running was no longer an option.
My Grandfather was known to have cycled at least until he was 83 years old but he'd never been obese. This last December I picked up my first road bike (Trek Domane Gen4 SL5) as I've focused on endurance riding doing 70+km three times a week and hope to do that this outdoor season as well. Being retired you consider every day to be Saturday ;)
I hope others, who struggle with weight loss, can derive some inspiration from my own experience.
Thanks for your contributions to the cycling community.

I lost more than 40 pounds once around 15 years ago. It was funny though since it wasn't planned at all, I wasn't really dieting, and I was only at 182 to begin with for 71". I was just running a lot and I randomly changed some things for what I was eating. I did gain all that back after a couple of years, and that was mostly due to dropping the running for a few years, before I started with the bikes again. But I'll tell you, when I was keeping under 140 pounds at my height, it looked kind of scary! Anyway, I'm right in the high 170s now and that's reasonable for me and under 25 BMI.

Dear Leonard, you are very articulate. When i was young and skinny racer...yes i looked down on fat people. Little did i know i would join their ranks in my 30s. highest lifetime weight ever was 245. mostly since 2020 i have been in the 215-225 range. However last christmas and this spring i ballooned up to 240. Honestly i felt dreadful. so i determined to go for 180 pounds, a whopping 25 percent decrease in body weight. Joined weight watchers (been on it before). dropped 15 pounds in 2 weeks but eating under my "points" and then stabilized at 225 for a week. My schedule is to drop 2 pounds a week. Feeling better already. by the way, at 215 this last year i could ride 100 km at 26 / km / hour. did 4000 km. this year with the extra weight i go about 1 -1.5 hours at 20 km/ hour. also have a sore neck (unrelated). So for sure baggage slows me down. Now i view rides as gentle workouts to gradually start getting back into shape. If anyone is reading this far, a steady sensible pace that you can keep maintaining is better than trying to zoom (for overweight people)... just put time in the saddle.
Please keep up the good posting.

I think this ordinary overweight is totally lost in the extreme narratives between buff dudes, anorexia and my 600 lbs life. I think most on social Media really don't consider that maaaaany people that are slim in their 20 s don't know how to lose weight either, that it's always hard. Many will slowly but surely gain 3kg here 5 there until it's a bit of an issue. I always notice this looking at old photos of older folks. They all were slim in their 20s, 30s often 40s.

My retirement plan included racing in 100 mile races in the states and basically do all the races I couldn't do while working. When I realized i wouldn't be able to do that I got a little depressed and developed some unhealthy habits( beer) and put on a bit of weight(currently 230 lbs). I'm coming around now tho. I am very fit, strong and athletic looking as i am lifting weight, swimming and running too (although cycling is my fave and i cycle regularly even during winter), but i don't judge anyone by its look - especially because most of the cyclists i know are taking all kind of chemicals and sugars to get some extra performance (i wonder how long they'll live), so for me the most important is HEALTH, so do what you like and eat what you like and as much as you like but stay healthy my friend! Try ketogenic diet if you want to lose some fat and build muscle but eat enough, lack of nutrients make damage not surplus - carbs are exception though as carbs create gut inflammation, insulin rise and belly fat build, so lower the carbs in any case, especially grains!

At 61, I'm 5'9"and weigh around 89 kilos. Last year I was 93 kilos so I have lost some weight, but at 89k for some reason it's stopped. Not that I'm complaining or on a major crash diet or anything, but my weakness is that I am a chocoholic, always have been, I just love the stuff! But watching this vlog I've definitely decided don't worry too much about it. As you say, exercise regularly and don't stuff yourself too much and you should be OK! Next summer I may try to attempt to get to 85 kilos, but I'll still be eating a small amount of choccy!!

Leo. Love your videos. I agree with everything you say about weight. You are who you are and much of that is genetically predetermined.
If I can put my Dr hat on. I’ve recently had great success treating weight loss. I use ozempic. Best results I’ve seen in my career. I also look at hormones. Now I know people in the Uk will vault at this. But the rest of the world seem to feel it’s fine. It’s certainly something to consider as nature would have us pushing up daisy’s at 50 or so.

Love the sarcasm as usual. Let's not forget genetics plays a role in body type and mass. It takes a lot of exercise to burn significant calories in order to effect weight loss. Reducing caloric intake especially as we age is the quickest way to effect weight loss. I've been riding close to 100 miles per week year round for 35 years. When I was younger I could eat anything and not gain weight. Now, I'm 58 and I have to pay more attention to my caloric intake even though I'm riding my bike as much as years past. Likely my metabolism has been slowing so I don't burn calories as efficiently. Many people are unaware of how much food they're actually consuming daily. Keeping a food diary for a few weeks is a real eye-opener to see how much food you're consuming. Let's not forget that thin does not necessarily mean healthy. I would submit that an overweight cyclist eating a healthy diet can be healthier than a thin person who is sedentary and eats unhealthily.

    • @jollygoodvelo
      @jollygoodvelo  4 роки тому

Yes, I didn’t mention genetics but they do indeed play a huge part. Unlucky for me, everyone in my family is on the chunky side so that’s not a good place to start from.

Hi Leonard, i´ve been watching some of your videos and what caught my attention was your positive disposition and just wanting to do something that you love, in this case riding a bike. In all my years of cycling i met several people who just gave up on the exercise because they weren´t getting any results ie weight loss, and they don´t realize riding a bike is so much more than just losing weight.
I am a 42 year old man who loves riding a mountain bike everywhere, i´ve been riding all my life and started with an old rusty second hand bike in my sixth birthday, it was a present given by my loving Mom.
Since then i just got more and more in love with the idea of just going anywhere without spending any money for the trip, i mean the sense of freedom is just amazing and having fun with friends is just so rewarding, if you are planing any trip soon just spend a week or two in Portugal, thats where i live, here you can find amazing routes for all your bike rides, try Sintra, the Lisbon area and Algarve, the route to Fatima, and the amazing region of Douro the wine country.
So keep riding, keep making the videos, i think you are an inspiration to people who are not sure if riding a bike is a good idea, the videos will help them make the decision.

Your kind of right and wrong regarding Lossing weight. it isn't so much about what you eat it about how much you eat. And this its what annoys me about vegan/plant-based diets, in fact going vegan can really bad due to the oils, emulsifiers, and excessive sugars used in place of fat and binding agents, well-proven and true but when done right really impressive results can be had. Any to much of one thing will lead to being overweight just change one thing and the pounds will shed. Ie drinking a lot of sugary drinks, well, cut them out. But portion size is the biggest one. It really doesn't take a lot. You/we/I just need a deficit of calories, so the average man needs around 2500 calories just to function and stay stable. Let's say you go on a ride and burn 1200 calories that leaves you on 1300, say you have a banana and some toast when you get back that's 1500 leaving you a 1000 calory deficit. You do that 3 days a week and eat sensibly in between you'll for sure lose the weight eating what the hell you like (and just cycling) as long as it's balanced. Your statement about "out exercising a bad diet" isn't really right, "out exercising an excessive diet" is the way it should be said. The key to losing and staying stable is moderation. The way i lost weight was to ride the gym do a class like, boot camp and the bike home (riding to the gym is a 14mile round trip) sure your knackered the first 3 or 4 times but man you get fit quick and lose the weight. I go rain or shine 2-3 or more times a week depending on work and other family commitments : EDIT sorry to sound harsh but there really isnt any excuse regarding weight lose I've been following you 2 years now and you must of noticed some wight coming off even if its a kg here and there.

    • @jollygoodvelo
      @jollygoodvelo  4 роки тому

I did mean the amount you eat rather than what you eat specifically, although eating the traditional healthy foods will be much better for you.
My weight fluctuates but while I will occasionally talk about losing weight this is primarily a channel about enjoying cycling regardless of size or age. I you want to watch someone’s weight loss journey, there are plenty of channels that have exactly that.

    • @gaza4543
      @gaza4543 4 роки тому

leonardmlee no I like watching your journey and your story’s but sometimes it comes across/you make sound impossible to losses weight cycling alone yes you also have to adjust the diet slightly but not much and even a fast 20min cycle round the block as fast as you can you muster is all that’s needed to make a massive difference, and what’s 20mins in the day. And there’s even research out there that suggest that’s even more preferable than going on a 40 miler. Personally I couldnt give toss how large you/we are. But in all honesty there should of been a difference by now no matter how smaller difference. Probably not weight as muscle is heavier but certainly waist size/body dimensions. But great vid anyhow and keep it up

Being overweight is a choice. Everyone knows how and why we get fat. It’s up to the individual to stop consuming more calories per day than they need.
It is absolutely a choice to eat that cake, or that packet of biscuits, or 4 mars bars in a row, a tube of Pringles or whatever.
10 years ago I was obese, my Wii Fit told me so and I was mortified. From that day onwards I stopped drinking gallons of Coca Cola, I stopped eating all of the chocolate bars I could see, I stopped eating packets and packets of crisps. I lost 3 stone.
5 years ago I started cycling on top of sticking to not eating everything in sight as per the 5 previous years before that. I started using a fitness tracker and monitored my calories burned in a day.
Since making these changes in total I’ve went from obese to ideal with a body fat percentage somewhere between 13 & 14%.
I changed for life, I still eat things I like and have treats, but I don’t exceed my calories for the day. I ride a few times a week at a hard effort and the weight isn’t coming back.
10 years ago I was a different person. I changed because I wanted to for me. I have no pity for anyone who is overweight and complains about it, yet takes no action to change it.
If I could do it, anyone can do it. The simple truth is the majority can’t be bothered to try. Or they go on fad diets.
Changing for life is the only thing that works and it has to be wanted more than anything else in your life, otherwise stay fat.

    • @jollygoodvelo
      @jollygoodvelo  4 роки тому

You are, of course, correct that it is a choice but its not as easy as you make it sound. Its basically an addiction and ask any addict how much of a choice that is. However, I truly am impressed by your weight loss. It must have taken a lot of will power and effort.

I agree 100 percent. Ride more-eat less will result in weight loss. Exercise alone (from personal experience), usually will not. For me, following the Weight Watchers program (I got their printed info and never joined or attended any meetings), resulted in a 30lb weight loss over several months (I continued to ride, of course). Weight Watchers is simply a "portion control" program that worked for me (it may not work for others). Anyway, maintain that positive attitude and keep on pedaling! Best regards.

After many years of Audaxing and long-distance rides it became clear that I would lose 1 pound for every 100km cycled.
The weight loss came 2 or 3 days after the ride (since I was full of food and liquid after the ride).
So a 200km Audax would guarantee a permanent 2 pound loss, 300km ..3 pounds .. and so on, right up to Paris Brest Paris, when I returned almost a stone lighter and fit as a fiddle.
The maths add up. 1 pound of fat = 3500 kcals. Let's say you take 5 hours over a 100km Audax. It's easy to imagine burning 600-700 kcals an hour, especially if it's cold (that makes a huge difference).
Here's the problem (that you correctly pointed out in your video)...to paraphrase.... You can't out-ride your mouth.
People would be horrified to learn about the effort it takes to exercise a Take-away Curry off.
I totally agree, and can back you up (as someone who has battled weight gain forever) that, if you want to get fit, cycle. If you want to lose weight, eat less..AND cycle,

Another coffee induced comment from me, sorry. Cycling for me is FUN first and the rest is a side benefit. A while back I gave up sugar in an effort to lose weight. Normally I'm 185 lbs. Well I got down to 161 and yes I could go quicker uphill and my average speed was better. But I was miserable on long rides and bonking. Always hungry and not in a happy mood like I usually am. Thanks to Duiranrider I learned to CARB THE ****** UP! I went back to my normal diet minus soda {used on long rides for energy only} and got back to 185. I'm riding at my old 25 yr old pace and doing better all the time. It's important to eat during long rides, something I learned late but boy does it make a difference. At 63 I find its better to ride 20 miles 5 times a week vs. 100 miles on the weekend. I no longer bonk on the long rides and my heart rate has dropped significantly. Keep on truckin" and keep your head on a swivel.

When I started cycling I was hoping to loose weight but it wasn’t my main motivation, I actually ended up putting on weight due to overcompensating with my food following a hard effort on the bike.
After a couple of years of static weight despite cycling improvements, I came to the conclusion that trying to get better on the bike and loose weight at the same time are not compatible goals.
I’ve spent the last three months focusing on weight loss and not done very much on the bike at all, no hard efforts just very low intensity turbo sessions.
I’ve managed to loose 60 lbs and am now looking forward to putting in some real training on the bike, and being able to fuel properly before and after.
I may be able to fit into regular size cycle clothing now, but will probably always see myself as a fat cyclist, anyone on a bike has to be a good thing.
Keep up the good work Leonard.

I don't ride specifically to lose weight, although I do hope to shed a few pounds. I'm basically eating the same diet and trying to ride at least twice a week (preferably 3x week but I'm working on that). I lost a lot of weight and my inflammation disappeared. I haven't taken a painkiller since. Last year I bought a second-hand £200 Trek hybrid bike off eBay and rode from Coventry UK to Galway in Ireland. I rode right through the middle of Snowdonia, and the trip took me just over ten days. I did it solo, unsupported and carried all the camping gear on the bike. I did it because someone told me I couldn't do it. To prepare, I did three months of riding the towpaths and lanes of Warwickshire. I cannot recommend the combination of cycling and veganism enough.

One thing to take into account is genetics and metabolism. I went to the gym, nearly every day for 3 years. Maxed out most of the resistance machines. One and a half hours a day. Didn't lose much weight. Body reproportioned, looked better. Lockdown comes. Cycle every day, 20 miles a day , in all weathers, gales included. Weight loss marginal. Got tanned, body reproportioned. Its not all about eating. We are all made to slightly different sizes. Its a lottery.

Unfortunately, there are a small portion of people that are morbidly obese that cannot get on a bike.
Also, it's about how much you eat vs. how much you burn that ultimately dictates weight loss vs. Maintenance vs. Weight gain.

Some people say keto, others say the opposite e.g. lots of lean carbohydrates. My enemy seems to be foods with lots of carbohydrate and lots of fat in it at the same time. Personally I'd gravitate towards the carbohydrate side of things, just for not feeling sluggish on the bike although not stuffing them down like durianrider with lost of sugar unless I'm out on the bike all day. I've found eating small bowls of pasta throughout the day (500g bag is 1750kcal) with some form of tomato sauce, but without oily pesto and cheese seems to satiate me. I'm trying to avoid the rumbling stomach, as that is when I'm tempted to shove a load of brownies or pizza in my gob. Another trick is to eat a small portion and wait. There is a time delay between eating and the hunger pang being satisfied. Also weighing my food. Also not trying to lose too much weight too fast or I'll feel like Jesus in the desert.
As I'm giving 3 people lifts to work, I'm thinking I could park my car in town and cycle out to it. I have a plastic bag for my bike as I've ruined enough of them in the rain. Obviously my e-bike

I've always been slim because of genetics, and I have a classic cyclists figure, long legs etc, but I quickly found out that I have no stamina, and struggle to keep up even with slow groups. Maybe I don't have the lung capacity, but I'm a lot less fit than you. You can never judge someone's cycling ability from body shape as there are too many other factors which we can't see. Also I agree about the charms of more voluptuous female figure.

It's easy to forget the small victories that cycling provides to me at age 60: 1) walking down & back up the hill to fetch the mail, without needing a break to catch my breath 2) not having to rally myself to go up the stairs to get a piece of paper off the printer.
I live on the edge of the Appalachians and, at 93 kg, the cycling scenery makes it worth the long slogs; I'm much more suited to throwing down huge watts for a few seconds. In the end, the scenery is a good trade.

The US army confirmed in the 1950s that carbohydrate is to blame for weight gain, almost exclusively. Carbs and their close relative sugar, is all you need to get rid of to lose the pounds. Greedy beggars can console themselves with enormous steaks and creamy coffees, and so long as they don't accompany them with chips, bread rolls and ale, will be fine.

Having the will of a British politician doesn't show anything of getting on a bike. ;) if you want to try something great for your diet iron man John Joseph has a great channel of vegan recipes which are HCLF, having a high carb density in energy source feels great while riding. I do that with BMX, moutainbiking and with roadbikes. Going vegan doesn't mean necassarily you lose weight you can eat potato chips and drink cola all day. a

For the going vegan point, it has to be for the right reasons. People who go vegan (or rather plant-based) for health reasons are more likely to relapse or have a hard time with it than those of us who switch for moral reasons - simply because we're not doing it for us, we're doing it for other individuals. It's easy to refuse to eat something that will harm someone else.
Ignoring that, a plant-based diet won't automatically help you shed weight. There are plenty of plant-based foods that aren't the best for you, all sorts of snacks and even the replacement meats. Going wholefoods plant-based combined with changing eating habits is the way to go in order to lose weight. Cutting out eggs, dairy and meat will help you become overall healthier however even with the vegan junk food - reducing your risk of certain cancers, high cholesterol, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and a few more I can't remember.
I've lost a little bit of weight but that is only because I've been watching what I eat - oreos are vegan. Send help.
Point is being vegan and being plant-based are two very different things, you have to do it for the right reasons for it to stick. It's super easy to be vegan as far as I'm concerned, because failing to be vegan is directly causing a grotesque amount of animal cruelty. People telling you to go plant-based with regards to your weight don't really know what they're talking about.
Also sorry for commenting on older videos, UA-cam is throwing them at me and I am happily catching them!

For me it was stomach surgery that changed my life (and weight). I used to be 125kg and was down to 70kg in a year after my surgery, I just managed to do it by my 50th birthday (fit by 50 as my wife said) and now 2 years later I am sitting around 72kg constantly with cycling daily. Bariatric surgery (sleeve surgery in my case) in Cyprus was under $5k and it was the smartest money I spent in my life. You say you would go bonkers with a new diet and I understand that, but when your stomach is smaller and you cant eat as fast, it takes just as long to eat smaller meals and you feel just as full so the experience is very similar. With surgery there are also no limits on the type of food you can eat after the first year so its not a "diet", I never feel like I am missing out on anything, in fact I find I can treat myself more than I used to now because the portion sizes are so small. I still have a sugar addiction but its very easy to control now.
Surgery is not for everyone of course but I am here to say that in my case (and my wife's too) it has been absolutely transformational and I have no regrets whatsoever.

That exercise automatically equals weight loss is a common fallacy. Losing 300 calories is a lot faster by not eating a slice of pizza than by riding for an hour. What I've found is that when I try to lose weight by eating less, my metabolism tends to slow down to "make up for it." What exercise does isn't so much to use calories, it's to kick my metabolism back into "normal" so my body will use some fat. I also notice that exercise tends to moderate my appetite as you mentioned. Regardless of whether one changes one's diet or not, or loses weight or not, cycling is great for the health and mental outlook at any weight.

What honest video. My opinion his, it’s my body my choice what I do with it. There are alot of factors to loosing weight, not just food and exercise.
I like to go out cycling for my well-being and to catch up with daughter. But need to find some new areas to ride, any tips 😂. It’s not just about weight loss, you can give your heart a good work out.

Superb realistic and self-aware video. Whilst cycling on its own will not shift the lard it is always a good start. A minimum of 150 minutes of getting mildly out of breath per week has massive health benefits - especially blood pressure, stress relief, and the warding off of type 2 diabetes. Cycling is also low impact on the joints and this is very important if you are on the chunky size.

I like and subscribe to the term Clydesdale. I took up cycling last year because of a diagnosis of congestive heart failure on top of my diabetes and morbid obesity. My health issue's are self inflicted and also self correcting. I am thoroughly enjoying riding my ebike and am grateful for the available pedal assist that make my daily rides less work and more fun. My weight is a big issue because there are few bikes with the payload capacity l need. I'm 66 and plan to ride until my last days. I even use my bike for grocery shopping and all short distance (under 10 miles) errands and using my car and truck less.

Agree with your comments about Posh spice and Keira K. It would be better if there were more curvy models out there. For one thing it would help young girls feel good about their natural selves! Your videos are inspiring, sometimes quite beautiful and relaxing to watch. Is that drone footage at the start? Thanks!
