What I really like about your channel is that you are a regular person talking about what many of us go through day to day. Thanks for keeping it real!
Don’t underestimate the value of positive feedback from those around you. As a newcomer to cycling and having my own gravitational field- 140Kg back in January 2022, your positive attitude motivated me to make a start. After the first 10Kg, the compliments started trickling in. Probably 70% diet change and 30% consistent cycling have been the method. Now the weight is fairly static at 93Kg and my focus is no longer weight loss, but weight redistribution. Never a day passes now without some positive comments about how I have changed, which in turn adds to the increased self esteem, confidence and happiness. If you can motivate a 65 year old misery guts who had consigned himself to gravitational hell and unhappiness, I’m damned sure you can do it for yourself. Besides, you have thousands of followers and I only have 3 friends! Thank you Leonard.
I’m mildly autistic. One of the manifestations is habit. I follow almost exactly the same pattern week to week. It’s a constant source of amusement for my coworkers. “It’s Monday. So, you’ll be eating a bean and cheese burrito at La Hacienda?” My autism does, however, have advantages. Riding is par of the routine. Motivation never enters the equation. Yup, I’m weird.
It's something that happens to many at this time of year Leonard! The change of seasons, the clocks going back has a rather depressing effect. But the first step in fixing the problem is recognising that you have one! ✅ Looking forward to riding with you in 2023!!!
Don’t be too hard on yourself Len.. you’ll soon get your fitness and motivation back. But I can relate to the loss of fitness. 3 weeks ago I collapsed with severe head pain.. rushed to hospital for CT/MRI scan and it turns out that I have a brain tumour. Constantly being topped up with steroids to reduce swelling on brain ready for op in few weeks, but ive gained 3 stone in the process, legs are swelled and I feel as weak as a kitten with zero motivation. Determined to fight back I setup the trainer and managed a whole 1k and it nearly killed me. Now ive been grounded from trainer until my consultant deems me to be fit enough to try again. Its been a long journey to get from where I was 3 years ago to the point before I collapsed and I cant say that im really looking forward to going through it all again.. but so long as I can get out and enjoy a few short rides again ill be happy.
“Post event depression” is real. I’ve found it valuable to plan a recognition/coping strategy as a part of the event planning itself. Keep up the great content Leonard.
I have had a little bit longer of a lay off of 3 yrs. With covid and being so busy and exhausted. I went from 180miles a week to nothing and weight went from 67kg to whats now 90kg. Really need to get back into it, so maybe your posts will motivate me...and will end up posting my own journey.
One trick I use to motivate myself in the winter is to do errands on my bike - little things, like go to the bank to deposit, or post a letter or buy a packet of custard, just those little things trick you into actually getting out the door, which is the biggest challenge of all when your motivation is low. Also, join a local cycle group or join several. That way your Strava/Discord is always buzzing with options.
I can relate to you totally. The weather is one of my 'excuses'. I now plan to go out for small rides, so no pressure to do long distance. A small ride is a good ride, and once I have gone a mile, I then start to feel more motivated. Small steps Leonard.... , keep up the good work.
Good plan, " I'll just do a short one" then once you are out you are already out and may as well extend it, and you feel better once you're going! Drew.
Now I can really relate to this. Like losing weight. I've lost the same 10-15 pounds numerous times over the years. I have one month before snow gets here and I'm down on the trainer. Thanks for the video and let's get at it. Take care, Al
Motivation is a strange beast Leonard. After shattering almost all categories of personal bests in 2021, I mustered up 5 rides totaling 79 miles from January-August of this year. My appetite ran loose and I became the heaviest I’ve ever been. Since August 21 I’ve rode 1060 miles, got the eating under control, and dropped 30 pounds to get back to the mid-160’s. I am almost back to 2021 form. I can’t explain the turnaround in motivation. I just decided it was time to take up Rule #5 and get back at it.
Truth! And it’s easy to ride when the weather is perfect, you’re well rested, and feeling good. It’s a whole different kind of thing when the weather starts to turn, and your not feeling your best. For me, that’s when I really have to dig deep, because I know that once I’m moving I love it. That initial push to get my butt out the door has to come quickly so I don’t talk myself out of it. I also found that if I look ahead for the best weather days, I already have it in my head that I’m committed to cycling on a schedule.
I find the turbo trainer especially useful at this time of year in the UK. It's not the same as riding outside but easier to get motivated when it is warm and dry inside. My other tip to maintaining baseline fitness is to mix it up with other activities just for some variety. In my case that's running and badminton but hiking, swimming etc. would be just as effective (Robin)
Thanks for your honesty. After the hot summer my fitness level degraded, less power more weight. I went to Mallorca couple of weeks ago and I was confronted with that, climbing the beautiful climbs. I know that I need a goal that I can focus on to improve my fitness. And I want it not only because it improves my cycling, but also because I know that I feel better, more energetic, in my 55 years old body. So I registered for the Mallorca 167. It will be challenging, but I am working towards it for the next 6 months. Persistence is key. So I get on my turbo trainer (very efficient) or on my mountain bike (a lot of fun). In my head there is not "I try to", there is only "I will". 💪
You continue to inspire me! Nutrition is next on my list. Goal is 25 lbs by March for the 20th and last Celebrate Half Marathon here in the lower Catskills. I continue to cycle every day and have truly come to LOVE it. Love that you put yourself out there so we ALL can relate. Good luck to you. Hope to cycle in Italy with you some day. Have a great time!
I completely understand what you mean Leonard. This whole year has been challenging to say the least. For the first half of 2022 I had a series of mysterious infections, which stopped me riding completely. Then there were family health issues, and other obligations associated with these health issues which also prevented me from riding more regularly. The second half has been better thankfully, but I've changed a few things. I bought a gravel bike, so spend more time on forest trails, and country lanes, and gone has any obsession I had with stats. In fact, the only stat I have kept is how far I ride in a year, and I don't use a bike computer like Garmin or Wahoo any more either. It's back to basics for me. I know I am on track to achieve about half of what I would normally, but if I don't make it doesn't matter.
Your journey is so close to mine it's scary. I will follow along and we can get back in shape together. I am targeting some 2023 rides beginning in March, so I am determined to not allow my fitness to fall back to square one. 👍
I was doing well for awhile and aside from chronic depression I was cycling daily....until the weather changed...I stopped riding for over two weeks lost my fitness and now I'm simply trying to recover...back at it but, fatigued also...
@@jollygoodvelo Your videos have been missed by the by, there are some folks in Manitoba and other provinces, who still bike through the snow, but most are more going to ride indoors if they have any sense or get the skates or skis out and enjoy the ice or snow. Sounds like you have a plan, looking forward to more videos to see how they work out even if they are what you call a short ride. Every day you get another chance to just get up and get er done.
hey Leonard, it's always difficult to get motivated and out on the lanes at this time of year with the weather and road conditions especially when youve been living it up riding in Italy! getting rid of the 3000km target is a good thing I think - chasing down strava targets really took the fun out of cycling for me last year and it became a chore to hit the distance milestones. It'll all come together for you by May but don't forget, IOW Randonee is end of April next year - I'll be finding a section of Portsdown hill to train for that one and might even tackle buns bent and hoe on my road bike again! cheers
Another great video Leonard. I share your frustration but but 4 weeks, see 14 months for me 😔 stuck in such a rut and a cycle of poor eating and no exercising. This video is going to be an inspiration to kick start me getting back in the saddle. Good luck!
Yes Leo I am sort of in the same predicament the reason why I am not on my bike, I just had bilateral 2 knee replacements it will be almost 3 months off my bike, I am doing pool work and leg exercises and physio I am about 2 weeks a head of where I should be can't wait to get back into it 🚴♂️🇦🇺
Good luck Leonard and your timing is excellent. I had a life issue 6 weeks ago and the wheels have fallen off my fitness regimen. At my age (60’s) fitness falls off quickly. Good luck to you and thanks for the inspiration.
That house at 6:58! Swoopy thatched roof! Leonard, I admit I felt relief to hear you say out loud what I had been thinking about myself. I've lost a lot of fitness from not being out on my bike; no one reason. It just kind of happened and facing the fact that I'm not in shape has made it hard to get back out there. It is heartening to hear you let go of a goal that would burden you and set new goals instead. Thank you for the inspiration.
A couple of months ago I converted to single speed and cycling has become far more enjoyable and relaxing, believe me try it and your bike will be simpler, lighter and you will be smashing up hills because you have to get out of the saddle and give some beans. I live in quite a hilly area and it is fine, start riding the kind of bike you had as a kid and ditch the lazy sitting in the saddle gears.Make cycling fun and different.
I wouldn’t worry too much, I regard this as the off season where I do some strength work instead, now I’m in my fifties I won’t ride in the cold and pissing rain anymore, it isn’t enjoyable so I pick my days and do shorter rides, I’ve got other stuff to do that I neglected because I’ve been riding all summer 😊
Good video Len! We all get highs and lows in our training weather it's cycling or any of fitness activities so don't worry. your only human and most people are the same. You'll soon get back into your routine.
Good luck with the next block of training! Don't forget to make use of the turbot trainer and app of choice - it's not the same as road riding, but it can help with the "winter dip" (and "winter inflation"). I've been dabbling with flat bars and knobbly tyres since the weather broke up here in Surrey - if I'm going to get wet and muddy, I might as well get properly wet and muddy!
I feel your pain. Nothing demotivates like a grey British sky, low clouds scudding across the horizon ready to dump the next load of wet stuff. However, once I have bullied myself to make the effort I only need to cover the first hundred yards to feel good about being out and on the bike. Knowing this makes the initial effort just a little easier. Thanks again for sharing the struggle.
I try to mix it up a bit, in the winter months I do more indoor rowing and light running. I don’t enjoy riding on wet roads! Even doing brisk hill walks can maintain you fitness.
Hi Leonard, I hope you are well,. I've been watching your videos for a while now, and there's so much relatable content there, especially with this video.. Just take things easy mate as we aren't getting any younger unfortunately so it takes our bodies a lot longer to recover than when we were younger.. Having said that, if you have been in Italy cycling with friends, having some really memorable moments and good times then coming back to drizzly England is enough to set anybody back a bit.. I think your doing a tremendous job with what you're doing,. Just remember to rest!! Thanks, Nick! 👍🏻😎
I have been off my bike since May due to an accident and have lost all fitness and put on weight but I look at my bike and love it, miss the peace and nature and am on the mend so looking forward to getting out for the pleasure of it. This. Video has motivated me to give it go . Do the things you can do while you can do them. ❤
Really enjoy your Vlogs and cycling journey. I'm not a great cyclist but enjoy riding and your journeys have been an inspiration. Here in Canada the fall weather is cooling down and more work is to be done inside on the trainer. I've downloaded one of your Italian rides to train with and it's inspired me to see if I can keep up.
Just stumbled across your channel. A real person riding a bike. 🌞 With the same problems most of us have. As I have collected a bunch of birthdays it gets harder to stay in shape. One thing that has helped. At 65 I took up gravel biking ( not to be confused with mountain biking). It has greatly improved my road biking a lot. As they say "20 miles on gravel equals 40 miles on pavement"😆
I gave it up for almost 4 years while we improved our property here in beautiful southern Utah and at 75 years of age I can tell you the road back is not an easy one. The winters here have turned cold quite early this year further hindering my progress and having come from a warmer climate it has taken a bit to get geared up but looking forward to seeing if I can catch up and try and match your progress. Best of everything. Keep it up. And real.
Another great video Leonard. Thanks for sharing your experience and the honesty. I’m also searching for my own motivation to get back at it - its tough to find! Good luck with yours!
My last ride out was a fortnight ago , Two Reasons , Replacing the old kitchen for a new one for the good Lady ,And the weather, as you know once those Westerly winds start coming of the Atlantic , Its Rain , Rain and Heavy Showers, and the Grey short Days which take us into the Winter. But still the bike is nice and dry , just waiting for those sunny days to come , and the Good Lady is well Happy .
Seasonal affect disorder (SAD) plus sunlight deprivation depression. We all have it. Changing our clocks here in two days and 430 pm darkness. Yuck .we’ve been very lucky with a warm and gorgeous autumn and I’ve been lucky enough to ride in absolutely beautiful conditions . It will all change any day and I will do what I must do every year…..head to Florida for four months of sun and warmth. Get off your couch and get motivated. I have my fleece suits ready for riding in the cold here until I head south. Plus the gloves , head coverings , face shields etc. get your spirits up and your butt off the sofa.
@@jollygoodvelo when the seasonal weather depression gets deep enough just buy a ticket and fly into West Palm Beach. You can be my guest for accommodations, cycling, beach, pool and good food.
I also work towards hilly cycling holidays. Done 3 this summer, 2 on Dartmoor. I'm 64 & improving year on year. My trainer had me doing hill repeats in preparation - a steady climb of around 8 minutes, then repeat... And repeat, gradually building on number of repeats. Did that once a week plus 2 x 30-mile rides & 1 x easy 20 miler before 6 consecutive days' cycling in Devon. Mind you, I was whacked for a full week afterwards!!!!
Nice refreshingly honest video. Thank you! Maybe you prefer Leonard to ‘do your own thing’ and cycle alone. Have you considered finding a conveniently local buddy who can pair up with you for spins? I do most of my cycling alone, bar big summer trips etc. It’s a pain and not easy to decide on routes, climbs and variety to keep ourselves interested and motivated. There’s nothing like getting that text to say ‘will we head out in the morning’. You enjoy the company in Italy so much and why not try and do that at home but with one or two others. Worth considering. I should listen to myself more often too. 😊.
Good luck with riding through the winter. I've put back on most of the weight I lost during Covid because I had other things going on that stopped my cycling. Tomorrow I start a regime that will enable me to ride to a friend of mine which will be my longest ride ever
Should have twisted it Leonard, the weather here in October was amazing, shorts and short sleeve jersey riding just mental. That alone should have given you a good reason get you backside out😊 No pressure on your self, just a load of goals. I’m with you, nice go to route and get the legs spinning😊👍
Its because youre human. Dont be hard on yourself. Youll bounce back im sure. Im rooting for you and i reckon many are. Im too scar3d to fly otherwise id love to join you. Good luck leonard
Hi Leonard, I’m hoping that you can find the motivation to get back to consistent training, I’ve been through times like that also, what I find works is to just put all of the negatives out of your head, when its time to go for a ride just don’t let your mind stop you, don’t think about the ride don’t set any goals keep it simple, just get up, get your kit on fill your bottles get on the bike and start peddling. I find if I focus on my fitness loss and the daunting task of getting it back it makes it harder to find the motivation. It’s just putting one foot in front of the other and don’t let any thoughts stop you. Once your out on the bike you’ll be glad you did! A coaching service might help also something like training peaks maybe. Good luck!
A smart wahoo kickr, an apple tv and zwift has overcome all these issues for me. Since 29th december 2022 when i started and now 28th jan 2023, with low carb diet and one group ride of one hour every day, I've gone from 92 to 82 kg and completed more riding in winter in the UK than the rest of the entire year and enjoyed it all. I l look forward to it. It's not a struggle on zwift, like going out in the dark, cold, wet, or the old dumb trainer used to be.
I can figure a few logical reasons if you're asking for feedback, Lenny. 1) In Italy you're living the highlife on holiday, compared to the boringness of the regular day to day life back home. 2) Back home it's a lot more I presume of going it solo. In Italy you've got the morale boost and extra motivation of riding with the other chaps. You did discuss that before though. 3)Weather as you described. 4) Perhaps you don't have a practical utility outlet for cycling. Commuting, or going for groceries, or whatever else. That makes a difference with me. In years past the only purpose was workouts or rarely dropping off a bill at the mailbox. Now I have utility uses which came from realizing I didn't have to lean on my car as much. So I'm out getting in smaller rides loaded with food and locks especially. Fewer chances to get slobby about it.
Sounds like a classic case of Velo blues, that happens to many of us, no shame there. Besides, taking a brake will allow to charge your battery again, make exiting plans for next season, starting with a clean slate. All the best Leonard.
Go Leonard! Do what you can do. Most people don't get off the couch and you are consistently pushing the pedals. I'm on a similar plan with you. Let's do this!
This is a tough time of the year for me as well. I’m going on the turbo more and decided to do some Zwift races which I’m quite enjoying at the moment. Watts per kg is a good way to go.
My last ride was 16 days ago. Due to a bad cold I haven't been on my bike since then. And the weather was so beautiful. Clear blue sky, nearly no wind and temperatures of 15 or more degrees. Slowly I'm feeling a little bit better now But now the weather has become worse. Rain during the weekend and temperatures below 10 degrees. During the weekdays I don't have much time. The mornings are chilly and in the afternoon I have other thinks to do. And it's dark before 5 p.m. I don't have any illusion about what is left of my fitness. But I hope I can still do some rides before winter starts.
Feel your pain and frustration. Just back from a 16 day, 650 mile bike tour in Spain. I look for any settled weather windows to get out. Back to having longer lunch breaks for 30km rides and relying on those longer weekend rides. Just taking it easy, enjoying the ride rather than head down pushing hard. I think I’m more interested in my enjoyment, mental health rather than fitness. Spring will come around again and so will the next ‘tour’.
I have a plan in place much like you, have a couple 25 mile routes that I know well and if I'm just not feeling it I'll ride one of them! Stay positive honestly you've probably helped more people than you know!
Hey Lenoard thanks for the video I bought a cheap road bike for a 2nd hand wahoo kicr snap all for £210 and its been a life saver I only started in cycling may 2022 but last month did 315 miles (my knees are bad) on the indoor trainer using Zwift. Although I love riding on the road having a indoor trainer has been a real time saver tbh.
Autumn is hard.. really hard. It’s already now (and getting earlier) 4.30pm pitch dark, temps are around zero and winter is coming. You can only try remember those warm, long, summer days.. I’d take 12C on any day; it would feel like summer. It’ll be almost half Year next time to get over 10 degrees.. Yep, it takes effort to go out, clean bike 10+ minutes after and try to enjoy. Still have managed almost 300km on this week! Wuhuu! 😁 Have included lots of kilometers on sand, gravel and even forest paths with road bike.. 😊 Playfulness is the key on days of grayness… 👍
Losing your mojo is just one of those things. Don't force yourself to ride if you don't feel like it. It will all come back and you'll enjoy it all the more when it does. I am going through a similar period post Covid. I have been riding long enough though, (nearly 40 years) to know that in the long term, a month or so off isn't going to make that much difference. Don't forget, riding is about enjoyment, not beating yourself up (physically or mentally) unnecessarily.
Me too Leonardo! Personally I work best if I have a target that will motivate me. And over this winter it will be the desire to get fit (build strength, build endurance, lose a few pounds 😢) to be able to join you and the others in Italy next May. I’m signed up and just delighted to have that goal to work towards. 🎉 I’m looking forward to both the preparation and the week cycling. Cheers!
I'm somewhat in the same spot, despite living in the area you rode in Italy. I guess motivation waxes and wanes, and work and life pressures can get in the way. Kudos to you for making plans to bounce back!
Hey Leonard, First thing's first: let me assure you we've definitely all been there at some point or another. The thing that has helped me greatly (and still does) is having the virtual world as an alternative to get some riding in the bank when the weather outside is bad or I can't make it in the bike in daylight conditions. Especially regarding the uphill challenges (I'm not a natural mountain goat myself) I found that it's easier for me to suffer in the trainer as he training takes much less time so the energy required is significantly less as well as the reluctance to spend it on training. Since I'm doing some trainings to increase my cycling power it's gotten a lot easier to shave some pounds off. Fingers crossed that you'll reach the goals you're setting for yourself 👍🏼
Thanks for posting mate. Being 68, my fitness disappears quite quickly. I have 2 or 3 events gran fondo events I want to enter each year that helps a lot with the motivation. Being in Brisbane the weather is usually very conducive to cycling, especially winter.
It’s good that you recognized it and you’re establishing a new game plan. I have been riding the same trail near my house almost exclusively for the past two years. I still love it, but decided to challenge myself and my fitness by driving my mtb to some more varied trails. Only 30 min from home, but I too thought about what will keep me entertained and motivated through some colder weather. I’m also working on improving my in the field repair skills on days too cold to ride. I’m confident that you’ll get your groove back soon as well. 😊🚴♂️
Solo motivation for me used to be a real problem until I joined the Cycle touring club - Wayfarers section midweek rides. Mostly filled with self employed, shift workers, and retired folk who looked forward to a bit of company to explore new routes and find a good pub lunch. When I retired my wife and I emigrated and moved into a huge retirement area with 3 cycling clubs which between them offers rides everyday so now no excuse to idle away watching the tv ! Guess that my original Wayfarers choice has paid off as I still ride each week. Miss those pub lunches though 👋
I motivate myself to ride with the Strava Consistency Challenges (e.g. 400/800/1,200 km/month). That works out well and I lost another 2 kilos once I did 50km+ rides only. So far I managed all monthly challenges this year. Also, great thumbnail pic!
I feel you friend. If I had to ride in that muck I wouldn't get excited either. I would procrastinate until it gets to late in the day then trash the whole idea. Do I feel bad about doing that, heck yeah. It's unfortunate I live in an aera that it rains more than it doesn't and I don't like getting my beautiful $11K bike trashed. I have a Tacx NEO trainer and I think I just need to spend more time with it.
I have 700 miles to ride by year’s end to hit 5,000 for the year. We are still experiencing really mild weather in Missouri and should make it. A friend and I ride in the cold and we don’t get snow. Without the goal I wouldn’t get out as much and I don’t dare take a break. I hope your mojo comes back quickly. I know how much you enjoy the rides.
For those long, 8% climbs, consider training at lower RPM, and maybe some squats or leg presses, as well as Zone 2 riding. As I see it, Zone 2 tunes up the engine for efficiency - good power without burning too much fuel or oxygen. 90 RPM high intensity adds a turbo, like an F1 car, which is great for sprints and short kickers, but it’s not sustainable. Squats can build V8, stump pulling power for developing low RPM strength. The thing about long climbs is that we have to keep the power sustainable. I find 4 mph to be optimum. 2 mph is like riding trials or doing track stands - it’s hard to balance. 3 mph is like riding drunk. I ride, but it’s wobbly. 4 mph is enough to keep it straight. With a 34 tooth chainring and cassette, that’s just over 42 rpm. For a 200 lb rider on an 8% grade that’s about 150W, which is very sustainable, if they can handle 42 rpm riding. Go up to 90 rpm, and that rider needs 300W, which few can sustain. Go up to 300 lbs, and 90 rpm on an 8% grade takes 450W! However, if one builds the strength to ride at 3 or 4 mph, we can keep the power in a manageable range for an all-day climb.
I know exactly what you mean ,I've been riding for 30 years on and off , but as ive gotten older now 62 riding in the winter is getting much harder mentally and physically, I've just got a wahoo kicker v1 ,it's wonderful, only problem I'm having is finding the right app with real videos of routes l want to do , I'm guessing you don't live far from me as you ride to Whitby and such , im near Stockton on tees, anyway enjoying watching your UA-cam videos, kind regards mike 😀
I think what happens when you go new places and do awesome rides it gets tough to do your daily grinding rides after some times. The regular ride just does not spike those dopamine levels in the same manner as new adventurous rides.
Stiff upper lip, Leonard. My best tip is to do something every day, even if that’s only a brisk 20 minute walk round the block. All you need is a bit of fresh air or a raise in your heart rate to keep the SAD demon off your shoulder. It’s amazing how quickly and sneakily that devil get his claws into you; the effect is mental way before it’s physical. I saw the bad weather lay-off coming this year and invested in gym membership. Three weeks in and the effect on my well-being is far more obvious than my physical improvement, so far. I’ve now had two days off with a tummy bug and I can sense that demon already. Don’t delay, Leonard!
Anyone that cycles more than half the days in the year has to go through that feeling of not today for too many days in a row til a week or two have gone by of no pedaling and then had to just endure the retraining. Your story had to remind me of the times we came back from the week long end of July trek across our state on the bicycling adventure called RAGBRAI or the Registers annual great bicycle ride across Iowa . After training for months to get in shape for 7 days of 60 miles of cycling per day, and then completing the ride it was no fun anymore to think of or do a bike ride again for sometimes months. So I think there is something deeper in the process of the long duration cycling event that does naturally sway us away from riding the bike again for awhile. Someone should put a name to the condition. The memories are enough for some of us for awhile anyway. Did you use an expression after refilling your tea cup , to the effect or something that "the difference is like chalk to cheese"? I'm still waiting for that video of when you come out of the garage with your bike ready to go, look to the sky and turn around put it away and go back inside to wait for a better day! Thanks for all your work in creating these reminders of our cycling life.
I've been training to complete another Festive 500 this year, had a slow week or two after covid booster and flu shot but I've had a good run of consistent zwift workouts as I work from home and trying to get in some longer rides on the weekends. After late 30s I've found I need to try to constantly stay active or all the gains disappear quick.
I’ve actually been to that area; it was a town that was half in Poland and the other half was in Czech Republic. Can’t remember the name. Very beautiful but I can image it gets very cold this time of year.
It's called old age. I threw in the towel and bought an E-bike. Totally loving it! Adds back the watts old age is taking away. I suggest test ride one for a week. Took me a week to get used to and appreciate the peddle assist.
@@jollygoodvelo Sounds like you need to uplift your spirits. Write an anonymous letter to a friend listing 10 things to uplift their spirit. Be sincere. Read it. You are your best friend.
You're lucky you can ride (almost) year round. Not in northeast US. Eking out the last few days of ride-able weather now, and will have to start (in seems as tho "from scratch") all over again come April.
Find a cycling goal that motivates / interests you, write it down, tell someone. Then work towards it. Look at the alternatives to outdoor riding, either cross training, and / or something like Zwift.
"Now, the beginning of October" - so even your video editing has slowed given today is 5th November! Seriously, a common issue at any timer of year but esp in Autumn. As a previous blog said, a riding buddy or group can really help with this aspect.
Yep I haven't riden for just over 2 weeks due to being knocked for six probably by covid and then a bout sciatica which means I can't even get on the turbo....lungs feel shot leg feels shot...can't even imagine riding a bike at this point. But from past experience the turbo will help getting back the fitness...once I can get back on it!!

If you can motivate a 65 year old misery guts who had consigned himself to gravitational hell and unhappiness, I’m damned sure you can do it for yourself. Besides, you have thousands of followers and I only have 3 friends! Thank you Leonard.
Look at thr good work you are doing,Leonard. You are a great fello.
Well done!
I’m mildly autistic. One of the manifestations is habit. I follow almost exactly the same pattern week to week. It’s a constant source of amusement for my coworkers. “It’s Monday. So, you’ll be eating a bean and cheese burrito at La Hacienda?”
My autism does, however, have advantages. Riding is par of the routine. Motivation never enters the equation. Yup, I’m weird.
Me too! You’ll always find me riding at the same spot at the same time on a given day. Some may call it boring, but to me it’s exactly what I need 😎
It's something that happens to many at this time of year Leonard! The change of seasons, the clocks going back has a rather depressing effect. But the first step in fixing the problem is recognising that you have one! ✅
Looking forward to riding with you in 2023!!!
Already looking forward to coming back in May.
Good luck Rob. Wishing you a speedy recovery to full form.
Hi Rob, I am truly humbled by your courage and determination. I sincerely wish you all the best for speedy recovery.
I’m not a fan of this damp, cold weather we have at the moment.
Good plan, " I'll just do a short one" then once you are out you are already out and may as well extend it, and you feel better once you're going! Drew.
It's a vicious circle the less you do the more you know its going to hurt going out so you don't bother so the problem gets worse
Now I can really relate to this. Like losing weight. I've lost the same 10-15 pounds numerous times over the years. I have one month before snow gets here and I'm down on the trainer. Thanks for the video and let's get at it. Take care, Al
It all seems like a bit of a grind this time of year.
I see you have been getting g out from time to time, Rob. Even some badminton sessions.
I can relate to everything you have said. Coming back from paradise into a Hampshire winter is always a tough one.
I quite like being in Hampshire but I do miss the warmer weather.
Italy and Spain get cold especially in the northern provinces.
It’s certainly tough to keep going, really appreciate the brutal honesty. Hope you feel more motivated soon. 👍
I’m sure it will come back.
This season can affect your mood, I've fallen behind the last month or so . Cycling raises your mood I know that so time to up the game.😊
The weather here at the moment is particularly bad: wet and windy.
Riding in the Canadian 🇨🇦 winter is always a challenge! Zwift keeps me in reasonable fitness. I enjoy the honesty of your videos!
Canadian winters sound tough.
@@jollygoodvelo They certainly can be!
I admire your openess and honesty.
hey Leonard, it's always difficult to get motivated and out on the lanes at this time of year with the weather and road conditions especially when youve been living it up riding in Italy! getting rid of the 3000km target is a good thing I think - chasing down strava targets really took the fun out of cycling for me last year and it became a chore to hit the distance milestones.
Great video Leonard, now remember good health and a plan can't loose. 👍
Hopefully.
I feel the exact same way sir. Your channel is so awesome. You are completely honest about your journey. I’m in the same boat as you. Thanks
I try to mix it up a bit, in the winter months I do more indoor rowing and light running. I don’t enjoy riding on wet roads! Even doing brisk hill walks can maintain you fitness.
Keep pushing forward Leonard 👍
That’s the plan.
Thanks Nick. I needed to hear that.
I have been off my bike since May due to an accident and have lost all fitness and put on weight but I look at my bike and love it, miss the peace and nature and am on the mend so looking forward to getting out for the pleasure of it. This. Video has motivated me to give it go . Do the things you can do while you can do them. ❤
Hope you are back on the bike soon, Yvonne.
Great vid, Len. You know what you have to do. Get out there and do it! You'll be fine, for Italy. Ride on, mate.
I think many of us are struggling this time of year.
So much sad stuff happening at home and abroad (as well as the weather), but you continue to inspire us with your openness. All the best mate!
I wish I could join you down there!
@@jollygoodvelo when the seasonal weather depression gets deep enough just buy a ticket and fly into West Palm Beach. You can be my guest for accommodations, cycling, beach, pool and good food.
@@markfeldman6509 If only, Mark!
Part of me actually enjoys the autumnal weather, it’s just that it’s not the best for cycling.
Best of luck with it Christopher. I see you’ve been doing quite a lot on Zwift.
This is a tough time of the year for me as well. I’m going on the turbo more and decided to do some Zwift races which I’m quite enjoying at the moment. Watts per kg is a good way to go.
I’ve done a couple of Zwift sessions as well and they are just as difficult
@@jollygoodvelo yea I think with indoor training if you don’t enjoy it is the same as anything else it’s really difficult to stick with it.
"I'm walking backwards for Christmas across the Irish sea" Spike Milligan. I'm a sack of spuds.
Not heard that one.
My last ride was 16 days ago. Due to a bad cold I haven't been on my bike since then. And the weather was so beautiful. Clear blue sky, nearly no wind and temperatures
of 15 or more degrees.
Great vid, staying motivated in November is tough.
Playfulness is the key on days of grayness… 👍
Well done on 300 kms this week. I don’t even manage that in the summer.
Cheers!
Hopefully see you in Italy in May!
Yoyo motivation = yoyo fitness + yoyo dieting + yoyo moods + yoyo guilt + yoyo weight. The equation of my cycling life!
I'm somewhat in the same spot, despite living in the area you rode in Italy. I guess motivation waxes and wanes, and work and life pressures can get in the way. Kudos to you for making plans to bounce back!
Lucky you. Hope the routes are slightly easier!
@@jollygoodvelo Rarely they are but usually they're not. All good.
Hey Leonard,
First thing's first: let me assure you we've definitely all been there at some point or another.
I’m very jealous of your climate.
Don't come to south oz the weather has been unusually cold and wet even in spring.
@@glennoc8585 melbourne boy ?😎
3:05 haha good one "element of motivation" take a look at the mug
Yes, the weather is rubbish here in West Wales.
I think it’s all pretty bad for the uk for the next ten days or so.
Element of motivation mug touch was spotted 👍😂
I know I feel your energy level, I think it is more about not having the group that says let’s go!!! I have that problem here so it is understandable
Come to Seattle and we can ride together. The weather is just like yours and we have hills everywhere.
Glad you’re back. Hang in there…”keep on spinning”…..
I never really went too far.
I stay gym fit all year and cycle more Mar-Oct. ideally I would weekend cycle maybe 2 hrs every other week with hills.
You are an everyday guy like the rest of us. Thanks Leonard
It's frustrating having good weather and feeling just a bit off, plus a recent injury. A few miles in 2 or 3 days is it. I'm seeing a doctor soon.
Best of luck.
Sometimes you just need a break, especially after achieving a big goal. Its a natural letdown. We all go through it. Don't be too hard on yourself.
Don’t they just!
I'm trying to cycle all year round and yes, it's kind of demotivating when the weather outside is dull (I live on the Czech-Polish border).
I already have an ebike. I think they are great but I mainly still ride my regular bike.
@@jollygoodvelo Sounds like you need to uplift your spirits.

Be sincere.
I already have Zwift. It’s the overall motivation I was lacking.
You’ll be fine because you have the Leonardo Power. One pedal stroke at a time.
Jump on Zwift during the winter months, keeps you going when it's cold outside and you're not in the mood
