Funnily enough, that's exactly what happened with the movies themselves. Peter Jackson originally pitched LOTR as a two-parter to Miramax (Harvey and Bob Weinstein's company). They started pre-production but the budget soon spiraled and Bob Weinstein demanded that the movie be condensed into a single film. Peter Jackson wasn't happy about cutting out "half the good stuff", so Miramax told him they would look for a new director. They agreed to give Jackson a month to find another studio to take over the project, otherwise, he would be off the movie and it would be released as a single film. Every studio that met with Jackson turned him down. They all wanted to make a single movie. A few of them agreed to a double feature, but they wanted most of the expensive scenes cut out, which Jackson found unacceptable. Jackson's last meeting was with Bob Shaye (the head of New Line Cinema at the time). He said, "Why would you do two films when there's three books? Why wouldn't you do three films?". Jackson immediately signed a contract with New Line and the rest is history.
20+ years later and I still can't believe these movies happened. Humanity is still in debt to PJ, weta, new Zealand, and the whole cast and crew for making these absolutely incredible films.

What sells it for me is the slight change of the LOTR music motif as the tower falls, subtle and suddenly with a positive inflection. Made me cry in the cinema…
Seriously! ROTK had as many VFX shots as the other two films combined yet we only get a taste of it???? Skip the The Hobbit video, we all know it was bad and should feel bad.
I love how every profession within the movie industry can fangirl over LotR. From musicians, writers, VFX artists, make-up artists, set designers - it truly is a masterpiece.
Yeah should've been one part per movie. The ents, the ringwraiths' flying steeds, the army of the dead (which are IN the thumbnail). Oliphaunts, horses, and the wargs. And Gandalf's fireworks!
You guys actually missed out on one of the coolest things about Massive: These characters had a premature form of AI... causing a few of them to actually run away from the battle at Helms Deep near the end when Gandalf appears. They mention this in the bonus material
Well, AI is not new. It's just recently popular. Most stuff you learn in undergrad today was techniques developed during the time of filming or earlier.
I'll never forget how Weta thought they made a self aware AI because they saw a few of them far off in the hills. An AI SO smart, that it saw the opponent army and thought "Bugger this, I'm outta here", when it was just a model that didn't collide with any of the opponents.
@@starllama2149 I don't believe it's machine learning if you mean it by undergrad techniques. At the time ML was pretty weak due to computing power and learning such stuff would be overkill (e.g. deep learning networks become viable around 2012). It was probably some rules made by engine authors (heuristics). But it's just my opinion.
This should be called good and great cgi. Also, the reason the effects in LOTR are so great is that they used cgi to supplement rather than to replace traditional effects. Whenever it was possible to use traditional effects they would, because they seem to have understood the limits of cgi (especially in the early 00s). Now, unfortunately, too many filmakers use cgi as a crutch to be used in 100% of effects shots.
@@st.michaelthearchangel7774 Fact is, the _Star Wars_ prequels, despite being derided as CGI spectacles, actually use tons of models and practical effects. Most people aren't aware that each prequel film had more models and practical effects than the entire original trilogy combined.
@Joshua Davidson Not only that, but there are problems with the current state of cgi in movies. Problems such as a single production using a ridiculous number of studios doing different things, visual effects staff being overworked and underpaid, and deadlines that prohibit the teams from polishing the finished product. You look at a blockbuster movie like black panther, and wonder how the final battle can look that bad from a studio that prints money. It's just a shame that some higher ups can look at that and go "good enough." That kind of passion for excellence in visual effects is lacking, but luckily we still have people like James Cameron that are pushing the envelope.
@@brandonanimations2915 Nope, not since CMike left as the editor/cameraman. . Also, it seems like the game is only on when CMike is rolling the camera, that's maybe the second and unspoken rule. The first rule being when you're in, you're in for life.
@@smaakjeks I remember going to cinema to watch these movies with my parents. I was 12 to 15 back then. Damn, I feel old. To be honest, about a year ago we gave a watch to all LotR movies in their director's cut versions. Almost 12 hours of high fantasy and great, truly epic story.
@@MiaogisTeas I am the keeper of the eternal grandfather clock. Its bell eventually tolls for all, and your time approaches with every swing of the pendulum. Live while you can, hapless mortal. Rage against the dying of the light.
6:26 Another Fun Fact: All animals with reflective eyes have this. The real interesting thing is that in reindeer, the reflection changes color depending on the season. In winter, the mirror turns blue so that blue light travels back through the rods and cones. In summer, they change to a golden yellow. This is because during the winter, the fluid in the eye expands, compressing the mirror and changing it to blue. In summer the fluid warms and relieves pressure off of the mirror, making it reflect yellow hues. This is beneficial evolutionarily because during those seasons, those are the most prominent hues of light, allowing them to see better (more sun in summer=yellow, more moon in winter=blue).
@@ResisterOfEvil They may not have created a Hobbit dedicated episode but I do remember them analysing the White Orc. Couldn't find it after a quick search, maybe it has been taken down.
Most people: “No way, dude. It’s one shot, I would never give up my Christmas break.” Clint: “Would I? WOULD I?? I WOULD THROW MYSELF AT THAT COMPUTER FOR THAT SHOT.”
It's emblematic of what made LotR so great - everyone working on it wanted to DO IT RIGHT. There isn't any one shot where you can't feel the effort and attention to detail just flowing out of it.
I would like to see a spot for Narnia, Why: The good & interesting: Aslan (Still holds up really well IMHO) Also makes use of MASSIVE For the practical effects they used RC controlled elements quite a bit (also, aslan lying on the stone table is actually a animatronic) The ugly: Poorly aged greenscreen shots (Bad lighting maybe?) Some cgi characters didn't age well
@@Ericbuddysquishytoad not surprising at all that they would just skip the Hobbit movies. They are the biggest example of VFX taken way to far. with Ian Mckellen saying how miserable he was acting on a greenscreen for the entire movie. To the point that he literally burst into tears and yelled "this is not why I became an actor" during one of the many scenes where he is acting on his own while the dwarfs are edited in. for the size difference. To the CGI orcs looking far worst than they did in LOTR. They felt real and grounded making them far more intimidating. the real orcs in the LOTR were capable enough to fool you into thinking you are looking at an orc but the CGI ones only reminded you you are looking at a computered generated orc.
I mean, there's also the fact that the Two Towers had a budget of 94 million dollars, which would be the equivalent of around 140 million today. In comparison to the Blackwater episode, which had a budget of 8 million. It's also important to point out that the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed and edited over around 4-5 years. All in all each season of Game of Thrones, excluding the final season, had only a year to complete an entire season, which was often longer than the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy in runtime. I have many gripes with Game of Thrones, and the final season was an unfortunate disaster, but we should also be fair to the hard working people who tried their best to bring us something amazing - and for the most part they did.
@@Bazoeti then why waste millions of dollars? At the start it was a fantastic show since it followed the books until they reached where they had NO book to use and so had to make it all original. That's the issue GoT has with the finale season or 2 (I forgot if if it was last season or last 2 seasons). Even so, we shouldn't just disrespect the artists, animators, those work on custumes that the show became bad due to the director's and corporate stuff. Like for example, you were hired to be one of the developers of a movie (doing modelling of stuff), how would you feel if they said same thing you said to them, you did not do it cause ya love but for the money. You be pretty heartbroken that people think you don't care but you do.
The LotR films are so much of an accomplishment that most people will never understand just how ground breaking it is and was at the time. It is literally mind breaking and industry changing stuff that is nearly indescribable. What a feat to accomplish and create these movies
The Lord of the Rings is a massive achievement. One that even the academy recognized when they gave Peter Jackson the Best Directing Oscar. While it's true that some of the VFX look dated, the trilogy is still one of the best ever made
watch the behind the scenes documentaries dude, most of them are on UA-cam and they are some of the most relaxing and fun videos there are if you're a Tolkien fan.
I've commented this so many times already, but the most recent the Planet of the Apes trilogy is worth a look. It had _unbelievably_ good CG and mo-cap.
“Those are probably CG birds.” Given the titanic work put into these films, I would not be surprised if Peter Jackson had Weta create miniature birds for that sequence.
Would’ve liked to see a breakdown of the Balrog and Gandalf fighting while falling. Love the shot right before they come out of the hole in the roof into the lake.
I actually think they have allready. I've seen it. But now I'm not sure if it was corridor or another channel that did the analyze. Pretty sure I saw it on this channel tho. But it's 3pm here, so don't take my word for it.
District 9 is still one of the standout VFX films for me. The photorealism is simply stunning. Perfectly composited with the life action footage. Amazing.
They never looked convincing. Though they got worse as the films went on, I think. I’m pretty sure the director wanted them to look cartoony and out of place.
Check out the appendices in the special extended editions. They’re really informative. If you want to know about it, it was a painstaking bit by bit time lapse essentially. They would film a bit of it with Bernard hill in the right makeup, change his makeup, and then line him up with the previous shot and then blend it all together.
I can’t copy the URL on my phone, but you might enjoy this video from another great UA-cam channel: ‘Sherlock Holmes - How To Do Visual Action | Film Perfection‘ 👍
me too! there's so much to unpack with all the practical effects and the models they build and thanks to the Warner Bros studios there should be a lot of material for the video
Random fun fact regarding Christopher Lee in the films: He actually made Peter Jackson change the script so he didn't scream when he was stabbed in the back. His reason: I have done this to people and they never scream. (He was a special operative during WW2)
And as cool as that is, it made me realise that other people scream when big things hit them. Like the dude who gets whacked in the chest by a ladder arrow in Helm's Deep. He screams, but his lungs would have been compacted instantly. But oh well.

Ya y’all gotta talk about the close up shot of the goblin puppet in the Moria chase scene
More please!!
Seriously! ROTK had as many VFX shots as the other two films combined yet we only get a taste of it???? Skip the The Hobbit video, we all know it was bad and should feel bad.
they didn't talk about the mumakils
I love how every profession within the movie industry can fangirl over LotR. From musicians, writers, VFX artists, make-up artists, set designers - it truly is a masterpiece.
I never noticed that Sam slide going into the mountian
Neither did I! But now I have the feeling I won't ever be able to unsee it.
me either and i've watched the films far to many times lol
Edit: never mind, I got it mixed up
@@Rhonu No, it's Sam.
@@UKBxnzh Yeah you're right. I saw the movie last week but somehow I had it in my head that that was Frodo
This was two parts and yet it feels like there was still so much left to be discussed or shown
Yeah should've been one part per movie.
They had to tweak the Rohan ai to not run away because they were so horrifically outnumbered
J P it’s fuzzy logic, which is not ML, since there’s no learning aspect but it can give the illusion of intelligent decision making.
Exactly why Lord of the Rings mostly looks better than the Hobbit films
And even when they didn't need CGI, like a gun in Spiderman: Far from Home.
@Joshua Yeah, I agree! Imagine if they made a new Star Wars video with the same techniques they did back with the original triology? Would be awesome.

This is beneficial evolutionarily because during those seasons, those are the most prominent hues of light, allowing them to see better (more sun in summer=yellow, more moon in winter=blue).
just saying that they never added the "The Hobbit" episode
I'm came down to look for this comment
Cos Lord of the Rings was better
@@tonigregory3240 dude in this video they said they were going to do a "the hobbit" video.
Ya, I'm looking for that. I hope that there was not a copyright claim.
@@ResisterOfEvil They may not have created a Hobbit dedicated episode but I do remember them analysing the White Orc. Couldn't find it after a quick search, maybe it has been taken down.
Most people: “No way, dude. It’s one shot, I would never give up my Christmas break.”
Clint: “Would I?
Just seeing how all the special effects and miniatures were done just makes me love lord of the rings even more.
WHY DOES IT HURT SO MUCH
So true. It's a masterpiece by any stretch of the word.
I would like to see a spot for Narnia, Why:
The good & interesting:
Aslan (Still holds up really well IMHO)
Also makes use of MASSIVE
For the practical effects they used RC controlled elements quite a bit (also, aslan lying on the stone table is actually a animatronic)
The ugly:
Poorly aged greenscreen shots (Bad lighting maybe?)
Some cgi characters didn't age well
I agree with this
“We’ll talk about that in next week’s video, about the Hobbit.”
Spongebob Narrator: 4 MoNtHs LaYtEr
8 MoNtHs LaYtEr...
yeah where is it
@@Ericbuddysquishytoad not surprising at all that they would just skip the Hobbit movies.
@@jimmystevenson3178 all the more reason to do it. To highlight the issues while also showing the great effects that were eclipsed by the bad.
WHERE IS IT?? I NEED THIS!!!!
Theodin being released of Saruman's influence still feels like one of the smoothest animations I've ever seen
So you're telling me that LOTR did a night battle way better and memorable than GOT using outdated technology?
Bro, that whole battle did not even make any sense :l
GoT focused heavily on cgi. Whereas Peter Jackson utilized both practical effects and cgi.
@@peterbabicki8252 no, got was all about money, they don’t know how to make the audience happy and they don’t care

District 9 is still one of the standout VFX films for me. The photorealism is simply stunning. Perfectly composited with the life action footage. Amazing.
Here's some VFX that haven't aged well: the Spy kids films
TBH those effect shots were outdated the day after they were finished.

I'm kinda really sad they didn't talk about king theoden's transformation in the second movie
Check out the appendices in the special extended editions. They’re really informative. If you want to know about it, it was a painstaking bit by bit time lapse essentially.
He actually didn't say he had done it, but he did suggest he knew the fact and Peter Jackson didn't press the matter 😂
