      It's the result of years of training, nutrition, tactics and the bikes definitely help. I might be able to get onto their wheel but the physical ability to maintain power and hang in a bunch like this is the big difference and the bikes just help that, really

      18mph avg after only 4 months of riding is really good! Jeff and the guys in these videos have years of racing experience and strong legs powering larger gears than what casual cyclists use. On an entry level bike with subcompact gearing you would need to pedal insanely fast (like 125+ rpm) to even reach 42mph.

    Is the judgement of "the break away group is too big" just a matter of "if it's big enough for people to skip pulls without being noticed it's too big", or are there more factors that could contribute?

    • @NorCalCycling
      @NorCalCycling  5 місяців тому +4

      skipped pulls are always noticed 😅 and if they're not that's an easy way to lose a race. There's no rule on the size of a functional breakaway, i've been in 10+ breaks where everyone is working and it's friendly. I've also been in 2 person breakaways where my breakmate is immediately skipping and playing games. when I say "too big" i just mean there's enough disruption to encourage people to either stop contributing, start attacking, or both.

      You can always shift, even when sprinting BUT it is not best practice as it puts much more stress on the drivetrain when you are putting a ton of power thru the pedals when shifting. I would say most shift to a smaller rear cog and then get out of the saddle for a sprint. Im not a racer and don’t have di2 so anyone please correct me. Love to learn new things

    • @ianbent0n
      @ianbent0n 5 місяців тому +1

      Jeff has said they look out for cars and will pause the race if cars get in the way. For the turn onto the main road, seems like the right-turning vehicles get their own lane so they wouldn't be interfering with cars on that road when turning. This is also a very lightly travelled industrial-ish area in the far outskirts of the city. We typically don't have the same level of urban density as you do in Europe, and that's especially true of San Jose, which is one of the most sprawling cities you'll ever see.

    We spend so much money looking for Aero and marginal gains and the clean up the front end of the bike and then we just have this huge item hanging off the front. The faster you go the more drag that has to slow you down. I wonder how much it negatively effects the aero of the bike

    • @NorCalCycling
      @NorCalCycling  5 місяців тому +21

      It definitely slows you down by making you heavier but I'm not convinced the out-front mount has any measurable impact on aerodynamics, especially compared to a gopro, or helmet mount. I'm making a video to test these different configurations 🤘

    great content, but as someone fairly new to group riding, I think stuff like this puts cycling in a bad light. Blowing thru stop signs with cars around makes for bad PR for the rest of us. I'm nervous enough with road riding as it is, and only idaho stop when I know no one can see me do it. I much prefer gravel riding with as few stop signs as possible. I already get grief when we ride 2-up on the road (which is legal here).
