The arrow and shape overlays during the video pauses were really helpful. Sometimes you'll describe seeing an opening and I'm not exactly sure where it is, so having it marked made it super clear. Thanks!
I was a bike messenger in SF for 10 years. I also used to do a bit of road racing and or crits. They had a messenger class one year. Anyway, that course looks fun with that left turn off battery onto Green, right on Front and back up Vallejo to Sansome.
This seems like not the greatest decision from Jeff's teammate who was in the breakaway. You're up there with these three great sprinters, why work with them at all when you have all your big hitters back in the field who just showed they can pop off a cheeky 1-2 in a field sprint.
@@Customisbetter2 I'm NOT a racer, but just from watching Jeff's videos I believe if the breakaway composition is not in your favor, you just don't work with them. So you sit on the back and don't pull turns, and then you can attack them in inconvenient locations and force them to chase you back. This breaks up their ability to work together and stay away, and it tires them out for when your teammates catch up. If they stay away despite all that, more power to them and maybe you have a leg up and can go from 2k or whatever because you sat on. Again, just armchairing here and maybe the dude had stronger chances than was suggested in the video, but he did get 4th so idono.
A classic example of why "never chase your team mates" is nonsense. There are plenty of situations where you shouldn't but there are also situations in which you should chase them. If your team is that strong like Mike's Bikes in this race, finishing 4, 5 and 6 is a big L. The guy in the break didn't stand a chance, so the much better option would have been going for the bunch sprint. With two good options (the guys who now finished 4th and 5th) the chance of winning would have been much higher. (also big mistake by the guy in the break to work with the others, they were faster while he had some good sprinters back in the bunch)
Id say that dont chase teammates has worked on different occasions. But everyone knows their motto because that was Jeff motto is. There are different ways to win and not everyone can be L3gion. Looking back at it now Team Mike's bikes recognizes the error here and I hope that they can make needed adjustments in the future. And also thanks for keeping it classy Jeff. I don't think you mean any harm to EJ in your videos. He will realize that some day.
Sometimes there is more to it than just the W. When you have guys who bleed out their eyeballs chasing down breaks, and stringing out leadouts for your team, many times a team will let you have your day and shoot your shot. I'm not saying that's the case here, but as a sprinter on a sprinter based Master's team, we often let our support riders stay off in the break to have their day. Especially in races that aren't as important. Just a thought.
I ride a cervelo soloist too - Pro tip you can run an R5 headset bearing dust cover and R5 spacers, it matches almost every integrated stem/bar perfectly including the Enve
I’ll never forget… Years ago I was watching a local Race, and there was a Break up the road, and it had a group of 5… Like your Race there was a Teammate in the break. BUT, the Team knew that if it came down to a Sprint that the Teammate didn’t stand a chance against the group he was with… So his Team chased the break down, and by the end of the Race went back to Plan A, and they Won 🤔👍🚴♂️🚴♀️🚴♂️
The hill is a great place to attack if you are sitting in like the top ten heading into that turn at the bottom of the hill. It’s nice cause you get to pick the smoothest line on that back section and into the last two turns that throws you out onto that sweet long stretch on the frontside of course. That back section and final turns are pretty rough pavement
@@NorCalCycling is that determined by the riders you’re trying to pass simply deciding not to close the corner off? If they were taking the grate would you still be able to go for it? How do you know they won’t cut you off before you go for it?
Thanks for tips on making up positions, I did the same course E4/5 and was trying to figure it out. A question about those corners where you made up the positions -- what's the difference between what you did and dive-bombing? I know dive-bombing is considered unsafe, where going into open space is safe... but with a dynamically changing field how do you know for sure there's space and someone isn't going to cut the corner tight?
if what you're doing is forcing others to change their position to avoid a collision you're probably doing something unsafe. You don't always know there's going to be space, but with experience you can identify those moments where there will be and take advantage of them.
Thanks for the informative videos. Can you please provide more insights on the No. 6 wheelset? I am debating carbon spoke lighter weight wheels and considering a number of chinese brands for my road bike - the concern I have in these is internal rim width at 28 mm. Will that force me to use a wider tire (32mm) or are 30 mm tires safe enough? I don’t tear down descents but still a bit concerned that I will have to use bigger tires which may not be all that optimal for my dogma f frame. Thanks.
Jeff I love your videos. Great race BTW. If I may make a suggestion, I really think you need to work with EJ when in these races. At least let him do the work of getting you into the breakaway. It would definitely increased your chances of winning this race.
How would you balance surging to stay on a wheel to maintain position to prevent left & right riders from stealing your wheel and maintaining that smooth is fast mantra?
Sorry jeff but i need to ask. Why is that nobody is using one crankset or even a more simple build of a bike? It seems that an 52x11-28 and rim brake are better at that type of races. Maybe im wrong i dont know.
1x is fine for crits but unless you live in really flat terrain it's bad for training which is where you're spending most of your time. rim brakes are fine, but given the choice I'd go with disc
