My man in the middle already knows how badass this was gonna be 😊
Eddie was a genius. He didn't let the instrument limit him. If the guitar didn't do what he wanted, he would invent and suggest changes like he did with the Fender. He was like Mozart in his time.
I have never thought I would ever hear someone; anyone play an electric guitar and make it sound like a violin or cello! Master class guitarist!
The only other guitarist that I've ever heard do that is Alex Lifeson.
The most common thing reactors say when he goes into the "blue light special" section with the swells(cello sound) is HOW?!?!?! If you actually watch, you can see how, but even seeing how he does it, doesn't do it justice to how difficult it is to do well.
Roy Buchanan “When a Guitar plays the Blues”
@@markh.7650can confirm, I play guitar and know all the correct notes, timing for the volume swells, delay pedal timings etc, but it’s impossible to truly recreate what he played. Simply doesn’t sound quite right
@@markh.7650
Yeah, he uses the volume nob and does not touch a string the whole time, just playing with volume.
The man created magic through his fingers. Rock on in heaven. Incredible RIP EVH
I'm a 61 year old guitarist. In 1978 my older and his wife took me to a Black Sabbath concert in Spokane WA. We had never heard of the opening band, it was some band from California called Van Halen. I was 16 years old, had been playing for only a few years, I was hearing Eddie Van Halen for the first time, and it was live. Here I am 45 years later, I'm still a guitarist, and I still get excited when I hear Van Halen. I just found y'all's channel, I love it!
Thanks for watching
They are entertaining.
Love seeing different generations react to his talent! There will be nobody like him!! The king lives!!
Eddie was a generational guitarist in the fact that when VH first album came out he literally changed the way guitarist approached the guitar. He didn’t invent the double finger tapping style, but he certainly brought it to the forefront and introduced it to the masses.
Obviously he was a game changer
Eruption? Volcanic!
Eddie made his own guitars by using parts from various name brands, always with an ear towards how those parts could make the sounds he wanted to play. With that much heart & dedication to his Craft, I wouldn't be surprised if the spirit of Eddie's guitars went with him to Heaven because he certainly played the Hell *out* of them.
Back in the day, when the group was still performing in the early stages, Eddie couldn't afford the more advanced gear like the foot pedal modulators & such. So he figured out how to wring every possible sound he could find out of his guitar manually...That gave him *technique* that he could turn into reflex, just like any Master would achieve in their field. In fact you may even have noticed that Eddie wasn't using any foot pedal modulators, auto-tuners or other devices during the filming of this solo...It was all just him & his guitar.
Eddie van Halen, born and raised in my homecountry the Netherlands. 😊 🇳🇱
Hardly raised there?? He spent 58 years in USA left Netherlands when he was 7 or 8
He never forgot where he came from or his language though !
I was at this concert. It was at the new haven coliseum in New Haven CT. Sad they tore the building but I understand. The concert was soo loud that parts of the ceiling came down like confetti. Wish they rebuilt a new place to have concerts, Monster trucks etc. Btw this concert was August 27, 1986
I got the VHS from this concert, Live Without A Net. They should re-release it as 4K Ultra HD with related audio.
Van Halen got me into rock and beyond. First heard them doing "You Really Got Me" on the radio. Got to see them. This, of course, after DLR left, was their 5150 tour in San Diego, CA..
We got a new Van Halen album every year 1978-1982, from grades 8 thru 12. My best friend and I grew up in the late 70’s, 80’s playing in bands throughout the 80’s, Brent on guitar and me on drums. Hugely influenced by VH. We were so brotherly close that we stopped using our given names. I called him Ed and he called me Al. We are both now 60 years old and we still refer to each other by those names. No musicians are closer than the brothers Edward and Alex Van Halen.
Legendary Tone. The King is Dead...Long Live the King. Watching him having so much fun as he loved to perform. Makes my eyes water up.
We Miss You King Edward Van Halen! RIP Brother..
Fun Fact about Eddie: Eddie never learned to read the sheet music, he later explained. Instead, he would mimic the instructor's hand movements and play by ear to realize works by Beethoven and Mozart. During recitals and competitions, he would use memory recall and improvise, earning praise from judges for his stylizations.
I saw an interview with him, and he said that when started out he could not afford the effect pedals, so he taught himself to do the effects without them.
Ah heck yeah! Good way to start off my morning
I saw Van Halen in 1982 during their tour in Philadelphia, PA at the Spectrum. What a scene, what a show, what a band! My ears rang for three days but I didn't care! I am so glad people of all ages come together over music, especially music I have loved my whole life. Great reactions!
Mean Streets, Take Your Whiskey Home, Everybody Wants Some and so many more....
Eddie was the first at many new things and a true legend . I was lucky enough to catch Van Halen twice live in the 80,s and they were SO good ! Just awesome to see generations discover this man and his many talents .. RIP Eddie you will be missed Sir ! Great reaction !
Simply the greatest. My opinion.
The best part... that's a 4 minute song on the "Long Version", most of this was improvised on the spot. Watch other live shows with the song, and it's different. It's different on the album version as well. This is just Eddie jamming, "Eruption" was in there but he improvised a ton every time he played it. Also, he was a multi-instrumentalist. He's best known for guitar, but that's him on the Piano in the track "Right Now", which while admittedly isn't hard to play, it's a masterful composition. Playing is one thing, but actually writing this music, and being able to improvise it on the fly, that takes genius.
I’m sure I was one of many in the comments who suggested this.
It was a joy watching dad just nodding his head in recognition, knowing what to expect as the ladies faces showed astonishment… Good stuff!
THE greatest guitarist to ever walk the face of the earth! No one can touch his tone or match his innovation. No one. RIP EVH 1955-2020 🙏 ❤️
Signed! And greetings from Germany!
@quecksilber457 Greetings 🙏 and thank you for watching! Rock on! 🎸 EVH RIP 🤘 1955-2020 ❤️ @jeffowens5150
Eddie was just incredible! One of the best guitarists ever.
Fun fact about his tapping technique:
Although he came up with the name of 'tapping', he wasn't actually the first guitarist to bring it to the rock scene. 😊
This tapping technique was introduced to the rock scene in 1971 by Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett, specifically on the songs The Musical Box and The Return Of The Giant Hogweed.
Eddie went to see Steve perform at one of his solo shows and was inspired to develop it for his own playing. 🙂
Steve's playing has influenced many different guitarists over the years, not just Eddie, but also Brian May and Nuno Bettencourt among others.
Definitely have a listen to Steve's solo song Shadow Of The Hierophant, from his 1975 debut solo album Voyage Of The Acolyte, where you will find him tapping. 😊
I had the Great fortune to see VanHalen Live 16 times and his solo NEVER disappointed...The Greatest of ALL Time...
Great Reaction!!!
I was lucky enough to get to see Van Halen twice over the years, once back in 82, and again in 2007... They put on a great show both times!!!
Lucky you
84 and 2007 were the two shows I saw.
Seen him in 84 watched him make the guitar talk , that’s how good he is….
Eddie was another pioneer in electric guitar playing
the guitar was an extension of his body. it’s like he was born with a guitar in his hand
Saw this live in the Orange Bowl at the Monsters of Rock show in 1988.
Excellent reaction!!! He makes it look effortless.
Yeah fantastic, sensational, awesome, incredible, greatness!!!! RIP EVH sooooo! Good rock N roll all the way love you ladies and LuLu your hair looks great 👍 keep on rocking ladies
Thanks so much!!
Man, I love watching people react to the official GOAT.
RIP Eddie Van Halen you will be missed.
Finally a video where Lulu isn't only concerned with the guys hair. Lol.
Get well soon Kathy. Miss your smile.
I saw Van Halen in Oakland Cal. 78' backing up Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne. Van Halen hit the air waves big time.
I enjoyed getting to see the often referred to Papa!
It was fun watching the three of you reacting to this video. You ladies looked mesmerized while he was just in the zone. Great job!
Thank you so much!!
Someone asked Eddie what it felt like to be the greatest guitar player in the world. And he said” I don’t know, you will have to ask Roy Clark”.
Did he really say that? That's cool.
such a delight to be entertained by such talent, wow.
That tapping stretch that he does at the end during the Spanish Fly segment is an absolute cramped-up tendon buster if you're not warmed up.😲
One of the greatest guitarists to ever exist,
My absolutely favorite
And there you have a master musician.
A lot of things people forget or don't mention not only did he come up or invented the tapping he does also he made his own guitar's. And fun fact Gene Simmons From KISS if you've been living under a rock😅 saw them playing a club and got Van Halen a record deal. But yeah Eddie designed these guitar's he's playing!! Just amazing and so sad he passed away so young.😢❤
Watch his face in the ending 🤣
I got to see them 5 times , 3 with David , 2 with Sammy . Was at the concert in 84 when they got their first No. 1 , I was lucky living in Rome , Ga. close to Atlanta ,Ga.. Between the Omni and the Fox Theater there was at least 1 concert a month to go to ! With tickets costing $ 15 , the tickets were usually cheaper than a t-shirt . So many great bands to see and my favorite place to go was the Fox Theater , not a bad seat in the place and the acoustics were the best !! Also the inside was beautiful . Usually the upstarting bands would play the Fox and the seasoned band would be at the Omni ,, which could seat larger crowds . What a great time for music !!!
I left 1 thing out ,,, NO PHONES or CAMERAS , just a cigarette lighter !!!
Great review! Thank you for NOT interrupting the performance every few seconds to add comments.
Jimi was the first guitarist to liberate the guitar from being a strummable, essentially backing instrument. Sure, blues guitarists and jazz guitarists took soloing to another level, but Jimi discovered that a whole universe of sounds was possible from the electric guitar, (plus massive overdrive and amplification!). When Jimi died Eddie Van Halen continued his legacy to take the guitar to heaven (and Hell) and beyond.
Loved pops sitting there like, "Yeah! That's how we rolled back in ancient times." Yes - I'm sure I'm pops age and I LOVE seeing the young people watching Eddie Van Halen in his prime! Pure genius!
One aspect of EVH playing guitar is the permanent boyish grin he had on his face every second. He LOVED his craft. I love watching him LOVE his craft.
I was fortunate to see him as an opening act at Day on the Green #3 in Oakland California.
He really was a game changer and one of the coolest people in the game.
That cigarette looked cool but his smoking is why one of the greatest music innovators of the 20th Century left us early.
I think he had more to give and more to live.
Kinda want to see Cathy's reaction she'd be blown away
love Lulu's reaction to this xD
I bought my first Van Halen 8 track tape when I was a young soldier stationed at Fort Eustis, Virginia. The first Van Halen album. I have every Van Halen album they've ever made. Eight tracks are stored in the basement for my Road Runner and upstairs I have the compact discs. Loved this band from the moment I heard them back in 1978.
Wow, you must be close to my age/ But I remember reel-to-reel.
@@Musicmanrobert I had a reel to reel at Fort Carson, and we used reel to reel in our junior high library..with headphones! I remember grabbing the Beatles and Three Dog Night on reel to reel in the eighth grade. Age? 67 is right around the corner!
Yes I remember recording performances on reel to reel in school. I'm 68 now as of December@@daveowens9849
Well done! Good to see someone with you that can fill you in a little about Eddie. Stay with it!
Thanks! Will do!
Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhodes were both Guitar Gods!!! May they both Rest In Peace...
The BEST reaction - thanks!
Thank you too!
You HAVE to do the van halen version of "can't drive 55" live from 1986!!!
Prayers for Kathy for a speedy recovery.🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks
He was 30 years old here ,watch him at 60 doing this solo in Tokyo dome 2015 to see how great he was 😊
He was 31 in this video
Eddie was a Guitar God! Absolutely amazing! Miss him so much!
P.S., I SAW THEM 5 TIMES ALL IN DALLAS TX. 3 W/ DLR, & 2 W/ SH,,, MUCH LOVE!...
Don't know how your channel crossed my feed, but that was a virtuoso performance. Thank you VH was the greatest
Haha a Classic EVH Himself....one of a kind
I often sincerely wonder how many guitarists, EDDIE Van Halen had inspired. Only musical instruments I can play, are all in my Imagination. RIP.
Eddie always makes me smile.. RIP ❤
THE BEST SOLO U WILL EVER SEE!!!!!!!!!! RIP EDDIE
I was at this concert, 10th row on the floor. Veteran’s memorial coliseum. New Haven , Ct. “King Eddie slaying it,.. drunk as a skunk. Grand reaction as usual.😀🤘✌️😀
Awesome
Ladies, you picked the right one!!! Van Halen Live Without A Net. From New Haven, Connecticut.
ROCK GUITAR GOD! Saw him live twice. He’s better live than any video you will ever see. Classical music background lead him to create sounds never heard before, or after. RIP EDDIE!!
RIP, King Eddie!
Have you all done "Mean Street" yet? It's my favorite VH song ever. It really rocks.
No, not yet. But hopefully we will soon.
Agree with Chad. I was mesmerized by him, and the band with DLR, from the very beginning. I absolutely loved Sammy before he joined VH, but it just wasn't the same obviously. He did bring a lot of positive influence to the band, and I definitely love many of their later releases. But that initial combination of musicality and lyracism between the original group was... well, it completely captured my young teens. Every emotion, every thought, everything - VH managed to reflect it right back to me. I will forever consider VH to be my first "favorite band" in terms of hitting me straight through the mind and heart. I'd never experienced anything like them before.
Eddie's death hit me hard, no doubt about it. Not the first of my youth idols to pass on, but the most impactful. The world is a lessor place without him, to be sure.
We all lost a treasure when we lost Eddie! I am so glad that we have the eruption on video for as long as mankind is alive ❤ we all miss you and WILL keep your memory alive ! RIP king Edward 😢🇺🇲
Thee greatest guitar solo ever!!
Actually when Eddie and his brother were kids they both started off playing opposite instruments. Eddie first started off playing drums while his brother started off playing guitar. Then they decide to try each other's instruments, and found out that they preferred each other's instruments. So glad they decided to change, right?
Eddie one of the best he will always rock.
🥰😍😘 love from Finland 💝
Only one way to Rock live from Tokyo is a must see!
Chad knows!!
EDDIE, the best ever. Rock in peace. 🤘❤️💯🇮🇹
Funny story, Eddie was asked about this solo at a clinic before he passed and if he practiced it or spliced bits on the fly as far as deciding what parts to play during this solo spot. He admitted that this night he doesn't even remember. He was so drunk because of nerves and stage fright from it being the first show EVER with Sammy, he remembers nothing of this whole night from the DVD.
So he played this not even remembering what he was doing as he was doing it. All muscle memory this point in the show.
Bits of songs in the solo: 316 at the start (Later on Balance album), Eruption (Van Halen 1), Cathedral (Diver Down), Spanish Fly (Van Halen II), Mean Streets intro (Fair Warning).
This "316" intro is priceless.
Pink Floyd "Comfortably Numb" 1994 Pulse tour
Agree 1000 percent the king the GOAT!
He was the King......The Greatest.....Legend.....innovator.......❤💣🤘 hail to the mighty Edward Van Halen
❤❤❤
Thank You Brandon...;o)
Eddie's cigarette thing came from jazz/fusion guitarist Allan Holdsworth who Eddie admired.
Kathy LuLu and Donna RULE❤ I subscribed because you're so cool!
Thank you
All right my lady friends with a substitute... I would like to send prayers to the one who is ill. There will never be another player like Eddie Van Halen. Always imitated, never duplicated. ‼️💯🔥🎸🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
