The bar, is referred to as a "whammy bar". It's connected to the bridge of the guitar, and when pressed bends the bridge, altering the sounds of the strings. 😊🎸
Rip to Eddie. The guitar goat!
Specifically a locking bridge like a floyd rose…..I learned that when I broke the bridge on my first guitar 😂
It raises or lowers the pitch in simple terms.
Whammy bar is slang although an accepted term. I even call ot that. However the technical term for it is a tremolo bar. 😊
And, just so you know, Eddie pretty much invented finger picking
@@marthafokker2071 Funny thing is, though, the term "tremolo" which was popularized by Fender when they introduced the Stratocaster in the '50s, is also technically incorrect. In classical terms, tremolo is the rapid reiteration of a musical tone to produce an effect characterized by or affected with trembling or tremors, or to emulate a sustained note (which Eddie does masterfully at 5:00 and 14:34 ). The more modern definition of tremolo refers to the modulation of an instrument's volume, like the guitar in "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" by Nancy Sinatra: ua-cam.com/video/qgDrpWWxuto/v-deo.html (we also get a nice example of the use of the *vibrato* bar on the last chord of the song! 😉
RIP eddie..you are badly missed here...
R.I.P. Eddie...GOAT and a legend in my lifetime. Great one to react with for sure!
A great guitar performance, that's all! But, à real boring musician! No creativity! Always doing the same! So far, from the real guitar gods, like Hendrix, or Page, bro! You're, just, a fan! Not objective! And, certainly not, à guitarist, who played since 25 years! So, please, calm down! 😂😂😂😂😂A Goat?😂No, certainly not
Worth you knowing that Eddie played piano first, then drums before playing guitar and becoming the GOAT. Also he couldn't read sheet music either, self taught, made his own guitar, invented & patented guitar part and developed his own amp and range of guitar. R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen, sadly missed but never forgotten.
He could read piano sheet music, but not guitar
One source actually said that as a kid his piano teacher was upset when he learned that Eddie couldn’t read music. According to this guy, Eddie had been playing by ear, at least, up until then. Is this false?
@@lydiapawlak8564 Incorrect. In his (fantastic!) interview on "Interview with Eddie Van Halen: Is Rock 'n' Roll All About Reinvention?" he says he never learned to read piano music. He memorized the pieces. It was 5 years before his piano teacher realized he couldn't read sheet music because he asked Edward to turn the pages for him as he played and he got it wrong and wrong and wrong. He never learned to read music. Amazing GOAT... Rock in Power, man.
ALL HAIL THE FRANKENSTRAT!!
It is a point of irony that both of the Van Halen brothers started on the opposite instruments and ultimately switched to what they each became famous for…Eddie on guitar, and Alex on drums.
He said he didn't have money for effects pedals when he was starting out so he figured out ways of reproducing sounds with the way he played.
This solo is actually 8 different solos he does on albums, just orchestrated together to make an epic performance. He perfected the tapping technique and built his own guitars. A pure force of musical nature. Check out some of tge album tracks, many different stykes but all uniquely Van Halen. His brother Alex is the drummer and also a great one. Im sure u will get many song suggestions from others, any are excellent. Also. Edward was a classically trained pianist and uses keyboards in many songs as the band evolved from its early days until its conclusion.
With some improv thrown in. Most of his solos were similar, but he always threw in some improv.
Yes, mom is right, he tosses the pick into the audience when he transitions into tapping/hammer on/hammer off. He does have picks taped to his guitar. There are probably picks attached to the microphone stand too. That Frankenstrat is one of the most iconic guitars in the rock n roll guitar word. Eruption is a song on the 1978 Van Halen album. It is only about 1:40 long, and slides into You Really Got Me.
Correction, the guitar he's using is not the frankenstrat. It is the Kramer 5150.
@@osukadesu Yes, I stand corrected.
both of you had a open mouth for about 15 min, thats reaction enough for me,glad you enjoyed him and respect the work he had to put in,to make it look so easy. im not sure, but the first part is actually eruption, the 2nd one (blue collered light) is called "cathedral" and it sounds like a chello or something.
I'll never get tired of watching Eddie play. To me he always looked like a grown up kid playing with his favorite toy. Rip
@Seven50ml, the guitar is/was Eddie’s favorite toy. Have a good day.
I'm a drummer, but he's my favorite musician of all time. I'm still so so so sad that he's gone. I got to see him live four times between 1984 and 1989. He changed rock music. RIP
BTW..."Eruption" is a guitar solo performed by Eddie Van Halen and the second track from Van Halen's self-titled 1978 debut album. It's an actual song, but the live version is different than the album.
To add to this comment. The solo IIRC, was originally Eddie warming up before a show. Was witnessed by a producer or sound guy and they convinced him to put it on the debut album.
Eddie melted my brain when I was 12 years old still gives me chills. Notice not a single cell phone the good old days. Great to see you two hanging out together watching a master of his craft. RIP Eddie thanks for the music
That was back in the OLDEN DAYS when we had to use fire to "light up" the crowd!
I saw all the David Lee Roth Tours from 78-84 and then 2013. I saw 5150, OU812, and BALANCE with Sammy Hagar. There will never be another Edward Van Halen! A Player’s Player, Guitar 🎸 God, and a Genius of imagination and talent that world sorely needs and misses! RIP EDDIE! ❤️😎🎸👍🏻
Very well said!
As a child, Eddie was taught classical piano, and you can hear that influence throughout eruption, and much of his playing in general. He really did change the instrument at the time, as there was nothing even close to this when Van Halen came on the scene.
To be able to leave behind a performance like this that will live on forever
That was so awesome 🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶. Eddie is the g.o.a.t. Of the guitar 💕💕. R.i.p. Eddie. . Thanks ladies 🤩🤩😊
A tremendous musician, gone way too soon 😢
R.I.P. Eddie. While he didn't invent "tapping" he was the best at it. Additionally, he built that guitar himself using parts from different guitar manufacturers
Dutch master and GOAT on guitar everrrrrrr Edward van Halen …….. Rest in peace Eddie!!
You left your legacy and you will remember.
You inspired thousands of musicians.
The Holy Grail of rock guitar solos. Epic virtuosity combined with one of kind showmanship.
What can I say that everyone else hasnt already said...he is GOD of the guitar...period.
the "handle" is a tremolo and it moves the lower pard called "bridge" and all the strings will be get lose or tight up,depends on wich direction and how much you pull or push on it.
I Cry every time I watch this. And I watch it Every Day. RIP Eddie. When and I get to Heaven, once I see my Animals and Family I want to Jam with Eddie!!!
Eruption was on Van Halen 1. He actually incorporated a few of his instrumentals in one solo. Greatest guitarist who ever lived!!!!!
Mic drop was invented here. what a musician. So sad he left earth. Will be missed.
Eddie was so intoxicated he later said he didn't remember his performance. This is just him on auto pilot.
Ladies, what you just, was one of the VERY greatest guitarist ever to walked the face of the Earth! He was on a different level a legend in his own right
*MORE* Van Halen please 😎
“Eruption” was somewhat an introduction to the the next song (You really got me) on their 1978 record album. If you listen to both together, it really is a great mix!!
It is so fun to watch peoples facial expressions as there brain tries to process it all . Eddie was the first at many new things and a true legend and KING of the hammer ons . I was lucky enough to catch Van Halen twice live in the 80,s and they were SO good ! Just awesome to see generations discover this man and his many talents .. RIP Eddie you will be missed Sir ! Great reaction !
I love mouth open, jaw dropping reactions. RIP Eddie, one the greatest individuals to ever play guitar. He influenced millions.
There will never be another like him - he changed everything. On top of that, Van Halen had the greatest music ever!! Listen to the 1st album - it will blow you away!! That album freaked every rock musician out completely! Great job Ladies!!
In addition to his musical talents EVH was one of the finest showmen to ever live.
When I was a teen in 1978, we had guitar heroes like Hendrix and Clapton etc...We loved them, but they were all from the generation before us having gotten famous in the 60's. When Eddie Van Halen came along, not only was there no one like him playing a guitar like he did, but he was from the 70's just like us and it was like he was ours.
The look of shock on your faces was beginning
Yall get it...God Bless EVH R.I.P LEGEND.
Eddie defined guitar playing for a generation of rock musicians, and his influence is still felt today. Even classically trained acoustic guitarists players like Marcin have incorporated techniques that he pioneered or popularized. RIP, Edward Van Halen.
Seen Eddie do this so many times live. He had such a kind soul, and was very shy. For years he couldn’t get on stage without drinking. He was never sloppy drunk…just settling his nerves. I used to be a DJ, and had to do the same at promotions for a long time. Thank God the shyness went away.
He was and still is amazing. He inspired so many. I'm sure I'll never see anyone like him again in my lifetime. Nice reaction ladies.
What makes Eddie so great starts @8:36. Those sounds he gets that no one else even thinks about doing. Yes, Jimi did a great job emulating the bombs and machine gun fire in his version of the Star Spangled Banner, but this is another level entirely.
The greatest rock and roll guitarist ever.
The metal bar hanging off the guitar is a tremolo or whammy bar, and it’s used to change the tuning or pitch of the guitar strings by either increasing or decreasing the string tension with the movement of the bar.
I like how her mouth is in awe of the way he plays
(R.I.P.) EVH...what a beautiful soul.
He was and will forever be my favorite guitarist of all time.
February 1978, 1 min 42 seconds changed the way forever how I looked at a guitar
He was a Master of the Guitar :D
If you want to be blown away by another incredible guitarist, and a performance that you will question what you're "seeing", I urge you to check out; "Jeff Healy" See the light (night music). It's truly mind boggling 🤯
Eddie is easily the Greatest Guitarist Ever. I had the good fortune to see VanHalen live 16 times and wish it could have been 16,000,000 times more. His son Wolfgang is also a musician and played bass for VanHalen starting when he was 16 years old and now has his own band called Mammoth WVH that you should check out. He has a video for a song called Distance that he wrote for his Dad before Eddie passed away and the video and song are both Amazing and Heartbreaking at the same time...
Greatest smile in Rock n Roll. He always looked like there was no place he'd rather be than right there with his guitar. RIP Edward, you changed my life.✌️❤️🎵🎶
Having attended (literally) hundreds of shows over the last 40 years, I can say one of my all-time favorites was Van Halen in 1984, the tour right before the tour on this video; absolute amazing show!
Genius level brain, you said all.
I grew up with these guys in socal, Eddie is three years older than me. I was fortunate to see them play before they ever got a record contract or open for anyone. I think it was 76 or 77. RIP Eddie. Best damn Rock and Roll guitar player ever. Period!
The cigarette had the best seat in the house. May King Edward rest in peace.
I was a teenager and a fairly new guitarist when I first saw this solo in the 80s. During the “Cathedral” section, at 9:37, when the lights turn blue, I burst into tears. It was beautiful, and I wanted so badly to be able to express myself through my instrument that way.
Cathedral gets me every time...his eyes closed with that contented smile...in that moment he's right where he belongs...
I was very honored. To be given a Frankenstein guitar autograph. He was in the parking lot in Hollywood. Last I remember he said. I will always be with you just press play ▶️ ❤️
There's a section in the middle where he's using a 'hammer-on pull-off' technique with his left hand, while manipulating the volume control with his right. He almost makes it sound like a cello at times.
The King..💣💣....innovator, Pioneer, Legend......r.i.p. man😢❤
Like many of you, I've watched a boatload of reaction videos on YT. I will say, out of all of them, this is the one I've watched the most. I NEVER get tired of watching and hearing it....people will be awe struck with this clip until the end of time. So glad I got to see him and the band live in the 70's and 80's.
EVH,the king dear ladies!
THE KING!!!!!
⚡👊🏻⚡
EDDIE the guitar king , master genius, I was 11 when first heard van halen 1, I was completely blown away by the entire band and the sound of his guitar and playing style, I grew up in a musical family my dad his brother and sisters would jam every family get together. My dad started teaching me guitar right after I heard van halen, I would practice for hours and hours till I mastered playing like Eddie. I've got several guitars, my wife bought me last year for my 55th birthday a Franklinstrat, I grew up with that guitar being like part of my family, a poster on my wall , saw VH with Dave 3 times, when I opened the case and saw my owe EVH Franklinstrat I just cried and cried like a baby, I felt like I had a real piece of Eddie with me , watching that guitar my entire life, now I have one. Those that don't know. EDDIE created all of that technical tapping, harmonic, use of the whammy bar , his sound his playing one of a kind, he's like the Elvis of guitar playing, my 2 favorite kings
Legendary.
may his soul rest in peace, a real Legend
Shredding and GRINNING the entire time -- a guitar "god" simply having FUN!
Eddie Van Halen, The greatest guitar player that ever lived, R.I.P. Eddie
I saw Eddie do this live in ‘81, about a decade before this show. Before that I had no idea guitars could make these sounds.
If it hasn't already been mentioned, he also plays the guitar solo on Michael Jackson's "Beat It".
Others have addressed the whammy bar. I LOVED this reaction - watching you both react first to his antics at the beginning, then running through all that amazing fret work. He is one of the very best of all time, no question. I saw him in 1984 and consider myself lucky. Thanks Gaps!
Thank U so much 4 doin' this 1First reaction!
Absolutely phenomenal!
*(Eruption)* is this specific guitar solo that he played at many concerts with some slight variations
Yeah, This is an actual guitar solo. SOLO! Solo means one. It amazes me when younger people think every rock song they react to has a guitar solo.
A Composition. As a pianist and guitarist he is the !Greatest!!!!!!!!!!
He made sounds with a guitar you never knew a guitar could make
Eddie was a self taught guitarist who became the GOAT(greatest of all time) when he completely revolutionized the way that people played the guitar. When he came onto the music scene in the late 70's no one had ever seen anyone play as fast or the way that Eddie did and it left people both in the music career and people just listening leave flabbergasted after watching one of their shows. He taught himself how to play after already learning to be a concert pianist and approached the guitar from his that way of thinking and that is h😢 he taught himself the technique of "Tapping" that you called finger picking. He didn't invent the technique but he did invent the 2 finger picking that he played with and he was so poor when they started their band and he could not afford to buy all of the expensive tricky equipment that the other guitarist had so he taught himself how to play and make interesting and crazy types of sounds from his guitar. Thar is the why guitar world magazine named Eddie Van Halen "The Guitar God!!" He was humble and kind and never saw himself as anything other than "a kid that plays a stupid guitar ". The music that he played after he jumped on to the first level after he threw his pick into your audience is the "Eruption" guitar solo and the part that sounds like he was playing the violin is a piece that he called "Cathedral " that he created by messing with the volume knob on his guitar and when he found the correct time to turn the volume knob it made the guitar sound like a cello. Eddie is and will always be the greatest guitarist that has ever lived. PERIOD!! KING EDWARD!!!!
Great reactions, I love the 😮 looks.
The best guitarist in the world. R.I.P. Eddie. 🎸
I LOVED this reaction you let it play through for a while, took it in, and commented and they were great comments...awesome job I'm definitely subscribing
Truly enjoyed your reactions. There was a genuine display of awe for a true master of his craft. Had the pleasure of seeing them in concert back in 1980.
effing loved it so much. insane musical content. Really cool band, super talented, pretty eclectic 🔥🔥🔥
Van Halen music videos are fun too.
He actually throws the pick into the audience after each section, and then grabs another one when he needs it. He kind of pioneered that 'tapping' technique, and his agent used to tell him to play with his back to the audience so no one could see what he was doing and copy it.
Eruption was one of the inside solos... there are like 7 individual solos in the total performance.
He was a manufacturer and student of guitar. He built a guitar called the frankinstrat because it had all sorts of name brand parts on it. A sheet music called tablature was invented to put onto paper what he played. It went against the grain of all, "music laws". Still known as one of the best of all time...
Love watching first reactions to the GOAT. that was great ☺️
His brother Alex is a great drummer.
When they were young boys they switched instruments and the rest was history
He was just amazing and always had a guitar in hand. Practiced all the time. In truth he had horrible stage fright which led to a drinking problem. Rumor is he was loaded during this solo too
He'd had so much to drink that he said in an interview he had no memory of that particular night, lol.
Great Family!! I wish you were there in 78!! This was 86. Thank you!!
Eruption is a single. It's only about a minute and a half. He just has fun up there with this with certain aspects of the original eruption song. It's amazing he just goes out there and plays.
FWIW...he had so many guitar picks because he continually threw them out in the crowd like mom said. The metal piece hanging down was originally called a "Vibrato Bar" then was called a "Tremelo Bar" then finally adopted to a "Whammy Bar". Pressing it down or pulling it up lowers or raises the pitch of the note accordingly.
In the second section of the solo, the part that sounds like a "Cello", is him simply pressing down on the strings with his left hand in a precussive manner in order to make them resonate sound, and then he takes his right hand and twists the volume knob from high to low to get the "bow sound" of a Cello. As his left hand hits the strings like a piano does, his right hand twisting the volume knob manipulates the sound.
The last movement truly shows how almost all stringed instruments are percussion instruments. Percussion instruments require you to strike them to creat a sound. In this solo all Eddie does is strike the strings with his fingers or pick.
It was fun going to concerts in the 80's.
I love that he was self taught.and went by sounds..❤️🤙👍😎
On early Van Halen records these are titles to his guitar solos: Eruption off Van Halen 1, Spanish Fly off Van Halen 2, basically soloing all over Women and Children First and Fair Warning! Cathedral and Little Guitars 🎸 on Diver Down. Keyboards 🎹 intro on 1984 that leads into Jump.
Fantastic, thank you!
R.I.P EVH i love you.. You are the king guitar player and very diffrent the another 👏 Brown sound
The Best!!
Great reaction ladies! I really enjoy seeing you all share your thoughts on these amazing artists and their works. You have a great channel! 🙂
There will never be another Eddie Van Halen. We were so lucky to be witness to his innovation, talent, and artistry. RIP Eddie… your music and your art and your legacy will live forever.
"Eruption" is the name of an instrumental piece that was part of this solo and dates back to the late 70's. This solo includes other Van Halen solo pieces from different points in their career as well as some improv here and there. For instance, the first piece he played when he was sitting down and made smoke rings is called "316" and it's from one of their 90's albums.
he taught me how to play guitar..many thanks EVH
The king !!!! EVH rules man...
If I am not mistaken, that was originally Eddie’s sound check routine when checking the audio for the sound engineer before a concert. The an engineer recorded it and it became part of the play set during the concert.
