This was in 1986 in new haven Connecticut. He said he was so wasted he doesn't even remember this concert. He used to practice 12 hrs a day. Plus he started out playing drums and his brother started playing guitar his brother is the one playing drums in the video until they switched. He also used to experiment with different guitars building them for the specific sound that he wanted I don't care what billboard said this man was THE KING. HE WAS NUMBER 1. REST IN PEACE EDDIE THE GOAT
You are 100% correct. He also never took guitar lessons and he couldn't read music tablature. He won piano recitals and his piano teacher didn't even know he couldn't read music tablature until one day the teacher was playing an intricate piano song and asked Eddie to turn the pages as he played. Eddie tried to do it but kept turning the page at the wrong spot. Finally he had to admit he couldn't read music. The teacher asked him how he was so good at piano without being able to read music. He said he would practice a lot and always watch very closely, the hands of other piano players when they were playing.
sounds of the instruments that Genius Eddie RIP, plays with his Guitar. -Pipe and church organ -Violin -Harp -Cello -bass -whale ,dolfin There's probably more. To this day I hear new sounds, close your eyes listening to Eruption, and imagine everyday sounds tv sea air etc, and then you realize how many sounds this music has 2024 - Açores-Portugal. RIP eternal Eddie
Eddie was an innovator. Building his own guitar and amplifier to make the sounds he was looking for. A true inventor of new technology and sounds that nobody had ever heard before. He was a pure musician and artist, creating new sounds, rhythms, riffs and melodies that were pure and inspirational to all guitarists that heard or saw him perform. All hail Eddie Van Halen!
It was in Hartford Connecticut in 1986. I have watched it well over 100 times. The greatest guitar solo ever by the greatest guitarist that has ever lived.

Best rock and roll guitar player ever. Check out his interview on, What it means to be an American ", . Came to America as a kid after WWII, couldn't speak English. Built his own guitars and never learned to read music. It's a great interview. This was 1986. It's pieces of different songs from van Halen
What u read only applies to the recording of Eruption from 1978. That listed the equipment used for the recording. What you watched here are elaborations on various other guitar pieces from other albums: 316 (the first thing he played on this), Eruption, Cathedral, Mean Streets, and Spanish Fly.
I’m assuming it’s some kind of addition to the guitar , like some kind of plug in to where it’s alternating the sound. Yes and no. It does have an echo on it but he is doing the sound by just using the volume knob. He hits the note with his fretting hand with the volume turned off, then swells the volume quickly and turns it back down quickly. He is doing it over and over so quick it makes it sound like he is using a bow (like a violin or a cello) but nope, he is just doing it with the volume knob
Also rearranged and wrote/played the Solo for Michael Jacksons, "Beat It". On his off time, free of charge. Didn't want credit but everyone found out. There's live footage of him playing it at Jacksons concert later on. Great stuff
A lot of the technical stuff you were reading was in regards to the recorded version, not this live version. He isn't using the same guitar for this live version and the actual song Eruption on the album is only about 2 minutes. This is significantly extended as it highlights several well know VH guitar riffs and solos from other songs. I highly recommend The 2 minute album version. It will melt your face off. The original was actually a finger exercise of Eddie's. This version has smattering of the actual song in it here and there. If you know, you know.
Thanks for reacting to this awesome performance by the king of electric guitar. Out of necessity he married a fender Strat style guitar with a Gibson f35 and les Paul. Using the humbucker pickups from the Gibson and resting the Strat for vibrato. He had to invent other things which he got patents for. He also modified his amps. All this was done because he could not afford the effects that others had. He created a tone through his fingers that would influence guitarist for the next several decades and probably will for many more to come. Even though people may not know the origin of it they picked it up from someone who did. Classical trained pianist self taught guitarist that couldn’t read music. This talent doesn’t just fall on you, he practiced tens of thousands of hours to achieve this.
This is my favorite guitar solo if for no other reason than the person filming this had the camera pointed in the right place - his hands! He sure made magic on that instrument. RIP Eddie
#FortWorthFabian The guitar you see him playing. It's name is Frakenstrat or Frankie because it was built from multiple different guitars. The way Eddie played, he forever changed the way guitar was played and built. His guitar solo here is from various pieces of music and songs from the band.
Unlike what was said previously it was filmed in New Haven CT over two nights. You can see the editing when something is in one place then into the sing its back again etc at the very start of his solo. Sammy tells the crowd the town is officially now called New Halen in reference to where they are.
The cathedral song you are talking about where he added some kind of effect to the guitar is just a common delay pedal for echo. He plays this by “hammering on” the notes with just his left hand. He is turning the volume knob up and down in time with the delay and his hammer on of the notes. The actual Eruption solo is not this. It takes elements from it plus all the stuff he did for years which also includes parts of songs he recorded and being called Eruption in this video.
I was 16 at the time .... Its called " live with out a net " from New Haven Ct. They played 2 nights they released the 2nd night. It was a once in a life time moment .....One of the best shows I have ever seen ....
That is not the “Frankenstrat” he is playing in this solo. This is the Kramer “5150” guitar. The “Frankenstrat” is a modified Fender Stratocaster that Eddie built and rebuilt - many times.
Really LOVE THE REACTION!!! Maybe check out NEIL PEART Buddy Rich HONOR????? Surprises awaits!! :) ♥♥♥ , or... Victor Wooten bass music????????? :) “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
this is not "Eruption" this is a solo he did for every concert, Eruption is a "song" off the 1st album heard before "you really got me" ....this is 3/4 of the way through a 2hr concert...
This is not the original Eruption…that was less than two minutes long…but it IS interspersed in this, which also includes riffs and techniques he used throughout the albums and some improvisation.
Your stats of the equipment are only relevant to the original "Eruption" song which was only like 1:30 min and was on the first album that Van Halen released in 1978. This video is NOT the actual Eruption that was played in this video. The name Eruption was just used because at the beginning of this guitar solo he played parts of Eruption - nut it is SO much more than that small solo from the album.
So sad, people who claim to be into music yet have never seen or heard of Edward Van Halen. There's is a bill in Congress that would make that illegal in the US. On this tour I was standing 4-5 paces away on the stage to his left. My uncle ran a security company that gave me access "just stay out of the way" was my only mandate. Did you catch his mistake? It was at the beginning. He put something in his mouth and set it on fire. Had he not done that, he'd still be playing with the same joy he exuded here. Nobody has had more influence on the way guitar is played than this guy. Not Hendrix, Clapton etc. The Smithsonian has a video interview on UA-cam done a few years before his death. Watch it.

The Mozart of our time, and we were lucky enough to be here for it.
It was in Hartford Connecticut in 1986. I have watched it well over 100 times. The greatest guitar solo ever by the greatest guitarist that has ever lived.
I have a copy of this on my drive.
Ain't no way in hell I am ever gonna lose this.
Just FYI....right around the 12 minute mark, Eddie is using the volume knob to create the "swells" in the sound.
Love how on the album version of Cathedral you can hear the quiet swish of the volume knob.
Eddie is without any doubt the greatest guitarist in the world (the
GOAT)

There is a reason why Quincy Jones called Eddie Van Halen when he needed really incredible guitar solo on Michael Jackson's Beat It.
Also rearranged and wrote/played the Solo for Michael Jacksons, "Beat It". On his off time, free of charge. Didn't want credit but everyone found out. There's live footage of him playing it at Jacksons concert later on. Great stuff
Saw them in 88 in Va, and Eddie was so drunk he almost fell off the stage. He never missed a note though.

I appreciate you giving the time to shout out the equipment. That said, only he could make those sounds with it. He aint leaning on it. The GOAT.

Like your galaxy analogy! Reminds me of The Planets, by Holst. You should check it out.😊
Exactly StarWars, Ed is JediGod-natural whereas Hendrix/Clapton are SithDevil-Pact

Most of these are clips of instrumentals Eddie recorded on Van Halen albums
Was beaten to it...1986, New Halen (Haven) Connecticut
Did you hear a few classical music phrases during the “ tapping” ? Eddie plays piano as well. Virtuoso- RIP great one ❤ 😊
Most of his solos was all improvisation so basically he jus fucking around lol
"Amazing solo last night, Ed!!"
Ed: "What solo?" ❤
It was in New haven connecticut in 86
It was New Haven, Conn., but they changed it to New Halen, Connecticutt.
New Haven Connecticut. Live Without A Net show. New Halen Connecticut.

Hendrix was good but Eddie blows Hendrix Away just a real innovator this guitar was altered by Eddie Van Halen
Dude listen to paul gilbert solos
Eddie’s guitar deserved a cigarette after that!
