- If you get a check engine light and you get this code P0401 this his how to do it in this generation Accord.
Also if you don't get any check engine light but your car is misfiring you have some options you can replace spark plugs cables, distributor cup and rotor (basic tune up) or you can do this process.
let me know if you have any questions on this video and don't forget to Subscribe. Thanks for watching

Thanks for watching.
Your the only guy who makes videos on this car it seems and you go into detail also. Much appreciation to you 🙏 I don’t have money to spend for the mechanic and you save me a lot thankyou Bro
Bullet Solano -- I have watched several of your videos and they have helped me when servicing my wifes' 2002 Honda Accord LX 2.3L. I truly appreciate all the time that you take explaining the procedure if not I would have not even attempted the task. I have replaced the transmission, front, and driver side motor mounts; cleaned the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve and PCV valve. For the valves I used WD-40 to free the deposits and then brake cleaner to get any additional oils off. My next tasks include the air intake manifold and while I am at it changing the motor mount near the fire wall; replace the distributer seals/ O-rings, cap and rotor; and then the front struts and check the breaks. Is there anything else you might recommend me to service or replace when I am changing the last motor mount or other items?
With much respect, Mark
Thanks Mark, the last thing you have to do is the EGR Valve and the EGR passage, and is good time to replace the spark plugs and cables if you still have not replaced it
You are an m’n’f’n professor, these instructional videos are priceless for us DIY’ers much appreciated
Thanks for that man
So I want to say thank you for such a beautifully described video. I've continously watched this video to clean my egr valve and put it back together. Thank you again!
No problem, thanks
U know exactly what ur doing. U work just like i do. U know what ur tools are called, u know what the parts are called, u just know ur stuff. Reminds me of myself. Good job sir.
Thanks man
Cool. I have a 2002 honda accord with over 200k. I never new about the egr and throttle getting so dirty. Now i know why my car idles rough. Ill probably clean the idle air control valve as well. Thanks for a great video.
No problem
Hey man. I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you. I had a vtec solenoid oil leak and started looking for repair videos. I found yours and followed it and replacing the gaskets fixed the leak(the 3 solenoid to block bolts were a pain to remove lol). Then I kept following your videos on the egr and intake. Your videos have been really helpful for anyone with a gen 6 Accord with an F23A engine. Thank you and keep the videos coming!
Hey man thanks for that
nice adding the bolt sizes and going over one more time everything that you did, great video man.
Thanks
for real, very in depth tutorial and all in 16 minutes.
I am here again, I have seen this video many times it has helped me a lot, today I was able to disassemble the entire intake manifold, because the bolt of the iac broke, but thank God I myself was able to take out the other part that was inside, and for tomorrow I will buy a clean carburetor to degrease all the intake and the iac.
And I learned all this thanks to all the Videos of this Mr. Solano, all his videos of Honda Accord 2.3 have helped me to do some things to my car myself since the mechanics here in my country want to charge other money for small things
u have a good cam it is really clear A1...
Sod Ent thanks man, Sony rx100
So detailed especially with what parts to remove. Going to try this week. Thank you!!!
Clogged or stuck open egr valve /egr passages can also show a P1399 code . Just serviced mine and wow what a difference ,also clogged egr can make intake temp reach 300 degrees . Easy cleaning with a nylon wire brush and vacuum just try to keep the carbon from entering the engine very simple
Thank you very much for this! I was able to get my 97 Accord cleaned and finally pass smog. Yah bless you & yours.
Honestly thenway you explain things and show things makes me feel like even though its a lot of connections im not scared to take it apart wow thank you so much man.
Thanks for your Channel. This got me through the repair on my 2002 Honda Accord and got me through every step. Great job and much appreciated.
+Joachim Weaver no problem Bro thanks for watching, and that's why I have this channel to help
Excellent instructions, worked perfectly for my '99 Accord 4cyl. Thanks!!
+Scott Demasi great, thanks
Great demonstration. I will be doing this procedure this weekend on my 98 Accord, 520K miles, original owner, easy to work on.
The job went great, thanks for the demo, but man, the torque on those bolts and nuts was unbelievable, I used the 1/2" drive and some elbow grease. Good thing I finally did this procedure, I caught a leak in one of the many vacuum lines, easy swap out.

THANK YOU SO MUCH BULLET, P0401 CODE , EGR INSUFFICIENT AIR FLOW, my check engine light is clear, Bullet you are a CHAMPION, thank you so much I could not of done it with out your help, I did by a new idle air control valve, and I cleaned my intake manifold it was really dirty, , my problem was I could get my throttle cable on correctly, it took me 45 min, but I did it, thanks again CHAMPION, your the best
No problem bro
Thank you man, I got the 401 code. With your tutorial video it's going to be easy.
Just make sure the passage is dry and put new gasket on the idle air control valve if you remove it
I didnt have a check engine light but i did this anyway because it looked like it would be easy to do and that it would help my car run better. Not only that but this video seemed to explain everything every well and gave me a lot of confidence that I could do this, even though i have never done something like this. I followed all the instructions taking about 5 hours to do so only to find out that when i started the car my idle would rapidly go from 1000 rpms to 3000 rprms and back down when in park without me touching the gas. This is because i had sprayed a lot of cleaner insided of the throttle body (like he shows in his video) and the cleaner ran into my both my idle air control valve and my map sensor destroying both of them. I ended up taking my car to my local auto shop because i dont trust myself to fix either of these problems and even if i did i have zero confidence that i could. In all doing so has cost me 700 dollars and the worst thing about it all is that i didnt even need to do this job i just did it because bullet made it seem so easy in his video and did not address what could wrong. It is hard for me to trust anymore of these videos after what happened with my car. If you are like me and have little to no experience doing this on cars DO NOT DO IT.
Sorry about that but in on video I explain what to do in case you have that problem
P0401 EGR Insufficient Flow 1998 to 2002 Honda Accordua-cam.com/video/neu3GWRHCPo/v-deo.html
Hey dude! I bought some new parts (EGR, IAC, PCV, and MAP), and this time made sure I put it all together correctly. It's running great! Much better than before I started.
Except for one thing. From yesterday to this morning, when I put the car in Drive and hold it still with the brake, sometimes the RPMs slow down to like 500 or lower. And this morning, I turned the heater on and selected defroster mode while in Park, and the car felt like it wanted to stall. I had to push the accelerator to keep the RPMs up, and after a few seconds I was able to let go.
Ok that’s good, question did you disconnect the battery before you started working on it? Because if you disconnect the battery the car take few days to go back to normal rpm
Bullet Solano I did disconnect the battery, so I'll give it some time. Thanks!
Yes
Solano I am bringing my car up trying to make a perfect sleeper, but you need a clean well working engine for that. your vids have helped me allot glad to see the car is done "never really done" looks nice in black.
Thanks bro
i would like to say that I`ve been watching videos on this and another code P0171 and for the first time today " You have been the most helpful in how to take apart and repair " out of any body I have been checking out !!! So I want to Thank You Very Much on your video and now i`m going to go out and do what you just showed here on this same video and see if it will fix mine . Again Thank You !!! Keep up the good work !!!
Thanks and make sure not to put too much cleaner inside the intake plenum just use a rag because some people put too much and damage the idle air control valve.
I followed your video when I changed the EGR, Air Idle Control Valve, and cleaned the intake. It was a success. Your video was very helpful. Thanks!!!
No problem
My car was running fine after changing the Idle Air Control Valve and EGR valve but yesterday, the idle speed started going up and down. Is there something you recommend to solve this problem?
Pacman your idle air control valve is bad maybe is a leak or the valve needs to be replace
I finally figured out the darn problem after checking the fuel pressure and changing the injectors. It turned out to be a bad EGR valve that failed after 3 weeks. No more parts from ebay. Thumbs up on your video and thanks for the replies.
Ok no problem, im glad that your car it’s ok now
Really appreciate the videos on the Honda, helped me a a lot to service my 98 accord, keep up the great work bullet
Thanks
Outstanding video and excellent instruction by you. I'm going to try this myself.
Ok thanks, one thing is just don’t put cleaner in the idle air control valve because some people claim to have rpm problems after that just clean the intake plenum with cleaner in a rag
Excellent job explaining. I'm doing this in a week. As well as the o2 sensors. Thanks for posting
No problem
So I'm doing this tomorrow. Why does his car run so well with this code? I assume it should run bad with a p0401 code.
@@grady.stu.8300 probably the passage is no blocked all the way, but is not getting enough air, plus don’t put cleaner in the idle air control valve!!
I like your videos, great explanations and info like torque values.
I don't trust videos that don't have torque values, goodntite is not a torque value!
Your videos have saved me a lot of money and my wife thinks I'm a genius. (sorry she doesn't know about you)LOL
😂😂 nice, no problem
Thanks for sharing.
Good video man, this is what I was looking for. Congratulation.
+Jorge Caldas Thanks Man
This is, by far, the most detailed video on how to remove the intake manifold! Great job, Bullet!
I need to replace those 2 hoses in the back, thinking about painting the cover while it's off. Any recommendations on paint color?
Thanks buddy
I did black last time
Great video! Down to earth explanation, easy to understand. Thank you for the walkthrough.
No problem
Thank you man this video was very helpful just what I was looking for I will continue to watch Your videos thank you
Thanks
Great video. Love all the details. It would have been helpful to show the cleaner that you used.
Thanks, I use throttle body cleaner but don’t put on the idle air control valve just clean the intake plenum with a rag to avoid idle issues
Thanks for your video. It was a great help. Job done.
+Graham Orr great man, no problem
To get those Idle Air Control back hoses, I found it easier to put the car on jack stands and access them from under the car. There is a clear line of sight to them from under neath and I can reach them easily with one hand reaching up to them. Also, if just removing the IAC, I found it much easier to leave the hoses on the IAC and remove them from their other attachment points, removing the hoses with the IAC, installation is in the reverse, with the hoses already attached to the IAC.
Thank you so much for these videos as they have helped me a lot working on my daughter's Honda. I have a question for you about where one of the hoses go - the smaller hose that attaches on the back of the plenum (not the one you showed removing after rotating the plenum). I can't find where the other end goes - after attaching one end to the plenum I don't see where to attach the other end in part because it seems to go somewhere behind the engine.
Thanks, one goes from the plenum to the iacv, the other one from the plenum to the back of the engine, check from underneath because is hard to get there
Hey Bullet, Since you have to go through all the work to take the manifold cover off, why not remove the EGR Valve and clean the whole passage going to it. I mean, if you clean the start of the passage in the corner of the intake cover you might as well do the whole thing and get it over with... I would hate to get it all back together just to have to take it apart again to clean that passage... Love your videos man, I think this is the 4th one I've watched today... Thanks!
Thanks Dano and the reason I didn’t cleaned is because I cleaned few months before that video that’s why and I notice that the passage was clean I just make the video that day because I didn’t see any other video on UA-cam about it but this Saturday I’m working in a 2002 accord with the same problem P0401 and the car is in my house already I have to start working on it Thursday so maybe I make a video about it
Very informative video. Thank you
Your welcome
Really informative. Thank you sir
Your welcome
Exelent job, well done good.showing how desabling every part.
Thanks
Great video Solano helped me alot
No problem
I have that 02 honda running on 270k miles .I hope I make it to 300k
Thx Very good info!!!!!
Muy buen video me funciono gracias
Thanks for the video bro it really helped appreciate it thanks
No problem bro, just make sure you don’t put cleaner in the idle air control valve
Nice video, I’m about to remove mine today!!! Thanks for the video!!!
No problem, just one thing when you clean the plenum used a rag don’t put cleaner on the idle air control valve
Man I really appreciate your videos. My car has this code, I have a 1999 Honda Accord manual trans. I took off my Egr valve and it was clogged up bad. I recently bought the car about two weeks ago, this is the only problem I have found. I plan on cleaning it all, bought how do you connect back the throttle wires?
+Kendall Tidwell great Bro, to connect the wires just watch my last video on the rear motor mount, I explain more on that video about the wires
Dude you save my day every fucking time ❤️
No problem
I am reading a lot of comments of people with after problems like the revs. What can I do to prevent this from happening with myself?
This was very helpful. Thank you.
No problem
You should post a vid on the cold air intake
Ok I will
How did you clean the bottom half since it’s on there ? Can you just spray it down like you did with the cover or how did you clean that half of it ?
I didn’t clean that, you have to removed the intake and don’t just spray cleaner in there, you need to get it out
You're awesome dude. Excellent video!!!
Thanks bud
This is a really great video it helped me a lot
Nice
exelent video... so great
Thanks bro
Thank you. Great Camara.
Thanks, Sony rx100
Thank your for your extremely well explained video. It is very helpful.
+Chris Kaufmann your welcome
thanks for the video. in order to do a good clean up service on the egr passages subsystem, and eventually on its system, as i always use, is throthe body cleaner in the sensors' area. q-tips play an important part there to dont scratch the walls adjacent to the butterfly component. after certain mileage, the distance between the inner tb intake and the buterfly metal structure increases - and adjustments are necessary - as well as the wearing out of pivoting points. there you might find teflon used by manufacturers for many reasons but the 2 most important are: 1. teflon will provide better sealeage and sliding area, 2. after many miles, depending on use too, teflon wear out - and it will create a vacuum leak hard to detect. also, overtime, it will create a misfiring condition. in any case, carb cleaner will clean out the teflon and eventually it will cause internal demage of many systems and subsystems as such. carb cleaner is usually used on old fashioned carburated systems. on newer and more superdelicate fuel injection systems you must be cautious of certain unknown procedures that will create unnecessary conditions and eventually time/ economic/ productivity loss and avoidable expenditures. for instance, carb cleaner will clean out the teflon used on the butterfly pivoting points. that is why manufacturers recomend the use of tb cleaner that doesnt have the harmful and avoidable effects of carb or brake cleaner. also, after servicing the tb with tb cleaner it will be a good idea to lube the pivoting points with just a drop of atf/ oil on a q-tip. on modern times, metal gaskets that in its majority seal intake and exhaust systems are reusable - making sure that the contact and the adjacent (mostly aluminum) parts are flat and not rounded. you could always use a file to calibrate for proper fit up. aluminum, for exp., contracts and expands with heat/ weather and other conditions. then, the old school shellack method will make sure the sealing of the gasket compliments the rest of the operation with elastic motion. dont worry about it if some sensors will detect strange fumes at the beginning. after a while, when the shellack dries out they will get used to it and you'll be done without any incidents, with its process. just one piece of advice, on tps wireless systems dont ever try to disconnect a tb, or play with a tb system, unless you know for sure that is part of the fault's procedure you are trying to correct because you will need to reprogramate or at least flash out your ecu/ pcm. its important to look for any service bulletins regarding any service procedure before you start doing a svc procedure because during the svc of fuel injected systems unintentional demage of delicate components could always happen. proper guidance will get you out of the hole even before you get there. this is only an idea
Thanks for the advice and yes a prefer not to mess with the throttle body, and to clean everything with care because is some cases if you use throttle body cleaner inside the idle air control valve is gonna get damage other then that thanks
Damn Good 👍
How do you clean out the passage on the engine... Did you spray carb cleaner into it too ?
Really good video thank you for sharing this 👍
Spay cleaner then get a small brush to scrub the inside, then vacuum all up
Good video. Detailed 🤙
Thanks
Thanks so much.
Your welcome
Do I need to do an idle relearn procedure after I do this? My idle is surging now.
You need to clean or replace the idle air control valve
Cool video man! how did you clean the intake with the 4 hole and the intake passage that is attached to the engine. The dirt and the carburetor cleaner might go to the engine. The dirt does not go inside the intake if I use a screwdriver and carburetor cleaner.? The top is easy to clean. but the other half might get all the dirt deeper . How did you clean it?
+Rey Ortiz thanks man, I clean it with a piece of wire and a vacuum. And when a use the throttle body cleaner I use a piece of cloth on the Egr hole, and the I let it dried out for like couple hours
I really enjoy your vids, they are extremely helpful to me, so thank you very much. I was wondering if I can request a vid? How would you clean/detail your engine bay?
Thanks and No problem
How to Clean Your Engineua-cam.com/video/rafgs_fm5rA/v-deo.html
Thank u bra

Great video bro, thanks 👍
Thanks bro
I noticed on my IAC valve I had a hose that wasn’t connected to anything, I had the two that are close together were connected properly but not the third hose that sits on top. Is that how it’s supposed to be or where does connect to
I think in your model is like that
I fixed, but make shakes...why. ? May be gasket or and hose in wrong side. ...😣
Jose Cruz don’t worry I think you put to much cleaner in the plenum and it went to the idle air control valve, you need to remove the idle air control valve and cleaned it up, if that doesn’t work get a new one
@@BulletSolano I found the fail, my old gasket (metal) fold it a little, I was bit a new one, and perfect !!! 😃
Nice
volvió a hacer shakes, ponga la solución en español o llamame

Cambie esa válvula del idle para que se arregle
Hello, can I just use a rag and throttle body cleaner on 4 way passage attach engine and just wipe inside each passage? Just spray the rag?
Hello bro, yes you can do that
What is that sensor called that’s above the ground ?
me garantiza k cambiando la Idl valve se corrige? o también sólo con limpiarla ...?
Lo más seguro es cambiándola pero aveces sirve limpiarla
primeros voy a limpiar ,gracias
Ok de nada
voy al jonke, nueva está cara
Okay
Any tips for getting the intake off? I have a 2001 Honda accord lx and all the bolts and nuts are off but the intake is stuck in place
If you already remove the bracket on the bottom and Al the bolts and nuts you can tap on it all the way around and you can put some pb blaster to get more lubrication in
What were all the parts needed? I heard racks? And car and troll body cleaner?
Could you use an ultrasonic carburetor cleaning machine to clean the valve. I use water and simple green in mine and would remove all the sensors on the intake and throttle body.
Yes you can but probably is not gonna clean the egr passage
Bullet Solano My machine is big enough to fit the entire intake manifold in so I think if I poke the EGR passage clear and remove the o2 sensors and the IAC valve I think it’ll turn out great. I’ll let you know how it goes.
After completing the EGR Passage repair. Car won’t start. Doesn’t turnover or anything. Battery is strong. Turn key, dashboard lights up and nothing happens.
Check all the connections
But the EGR mounts over two passages on the lower intake--what about those?
You can use a wire brush and a shop vacuum to clean it but on my car I didn’t see any blockage that’s why I didn’t do anything
hello, please explain something if you can, the sensor that comes in the front view when we open the hood before the distributor and which one in his name? do you know his part number?
Hi buddy I just all that my car finally started but it's idling from 1500 do 1000 rpm on its own and something is burning behind and under the housing...that big hose on top of the EGR housing that part you replaced on your other video I bought it ...is that what is smoking or burning
If you put too much cleaner inside that’s what is burning
Will it hurt the engine if you don't clean the EGR valve and other tubes? My car has the P0401 code but its running fine. Is it ok to ignore the check engine light or should I fix it?
Thank you.
+eiji81 the major problem that you will have is reliability, bad fuel economy and performance
And it won’t pass smog in CA
wat kind cam u used it is really good and clear
+Sod Ent my camara? Is a Sony RX 100
Good job man do you have to put RTV on the manifold gasket
Thanks, you don’t have to
@@BulletSolano alright thank you so
Would cleaning the passages, iac valve and egr valve get rid of engine stalling once it reaches operating temp on idle
Yes but probably your fuel main relay is going bad
....this is a great video on explaining step by step ...got a question...what is the gasket called ...
Intake plenum gasket but you don’t have to replace it
@@BulletSolano you can reuse the same one and won't be a problem....
@joeymartza965 metal gasket! Reusable
@@BulletSolano .ok thank you... much appreciated...and will let you know how it turns out ....
. ..how's it going .....so I cleaned the inside and the passage way to egr Valve got a new gasket put it back together started the car was good for about 3 mins then it started to idle up and down ..up and down... ..
Can the passage still be blocked and not indicate on the check engine light?
Yeah, if the passage is blocked it will not throw an engine code, only if the egr is bad
Very helpful video bro you saved me 400 bucks I just got one question for you... Why after putting it back together does my car rev back and forth between 1 and 4000rpm?
Hi thanks man, if you clean the intake plenum maybe some cleaner go to the idle air control valve, you have to removed it and get it clean
How To Replace Idle Air Control Valve 2000 Accord (P0505 CODE) ua-cam.com/video/yiZryJzTnZU/v-deo.html
That worked bro thanks alot
No problem bro
i took apart my intake manifold to clean it and i cleaned my egr valve and the issue was at operating temp it would stall but now the car surges to 3000 rpms on startup n continually does so unless turned off
Clean your idle air control valve and replace the gasket afterwards
I saw that the bottom half of your manifold was full of crud as well... I'm just doing mine and it's bad what do you suggest I do? I have a video of it... Can you take a look and make a suggestion? How do I send video to you?
bulletsolano36@gmail.com
Hey Bullet, what brand of struts do you have in your Honda Accord ??
I have coilovers
amzn.to/3QOV26K
Very good video man, thanks for sharing. I have a question for the same engine 2001 accord 2.3L they´re changing all the gaskets and seals on the engine so they took out the whole engine, this afternoon I went to the shop and found out that the throttle body does not have that little hose that shows in your video, the only hose you didn't disconnect it seems that it flows back from the throttle to the intake. Apparently its been running like that for more than 10 year, I´m surprissed it has never given any issues. ¿what is that hose for, what´s its function? it seems it just recirculates air from the throttle body to the sensor and the intake.
I think it runs coolant
@@BulletSolano Thanks for the response. Feb 13th the car was maintenance was finished and I picked it up from the shop. I notice that the Idle RPM is too high 1,500. When I first turn on the car the Idle goes all the way up to 2,000 and then slowly drops to 1,200 but when I´m traveling at low speed even without pressing the gas pedal the idle goes to 1,600. ¿can this be because they cleaned the EGR and the V-Tec solenoid passages?
That’s idle surge, probably they have to recheck the hoses making sure everything is connected where is supposed to, and check if the throttle cable is not to tight
What happen if you switch map sensor connector to TPS sensor connectors and start the car
don't know and I don't want to find out
I had a misfire in all 4 cylinders, 1998 Honda Accord. I changed my spark plugs and cables and got a new egr valve. Because the diagnostic says egr valve. I was told to clean the tube connecting the egr valve, would that be a reason why the other cylinders didn’t free up?
Probably that’s the reason, clean the Egr passage and if you clean the intake don’t put throttle body cleaner in the idle air control valve because your idle is gonna be wrong
Hey bro I have the same car it's a automatic to my question is what Honda motor can I put in it to make more power?
Hey bro, you can put any motor in the car it depends on your budget
Should I go on a clean my idle valve while I have the intake off?
Yes but if the idle valve is ok don’t do it because sometimes the idle goes bad after that
No gasket involved with that intake?
It as a metal gasket, reusable
When u spray when u clean the passage u just spary the carb cleaner directly onto it
Yes but make sure it drys before you close it up
This is the reason why my car won't pass smog and I can't get my tags updated I was an idiot and paid two different people to fix this on my car they half assed it didn't finish it and still took my money a year later now my car is tags are due and I can't do it because my engine light won't come off replaced the egr valve code still pops up but nobody wants to do it for less than a thousand dollars 😭
Hey whats up? I had that p0401 and cleaned out the air intake manifold and egr valve. when I put it back together it doesnt start...do you know what can be going wrong? thanks
I’m not sure what’s the problem but make sure that every conector is on and if you put throttle body cleaner into the idle air control valve maybe that’s your problem you need to replace that
Ain't there a plate under fuel rail with injectors that has passages for egr that need to be cleaned also
That’s for older models
@@BulletSolano I got a 01 accord 2.3..just did this on the video..so I'm good after that?
Yes you good
My 2001 Honda Accord LX started to rev between 1 to 3k RPMs like I had the gas pedal on . Turned it off then did it again and its still doing but not as bad but now it has a flashing CEL. Is it the IAC Valve ? Thanks!
Yes, get a new one
@@BulletSolano Ok cool, I turned it off cause the CEL was flashing. Can I leave it running for a few to let it catch up or will that hurt it?
Should be fine
@@BulletSolano Ok sweet, Thanks Bullet! I thought I broke it 😆
Hey Bullet, So I got a new one and it's still surging. The new gasket broke so I put the old one back on cause it looked fine plus it's from the original. After that it's still doing it. I haven't let it warmed up it does it when I start it up. Would that help or do you have another suggestion? Thanks!
I have a 2000 honda accord lx 2.3L can you tell where the Evap canister located?
Next to the gas tank
Bullet Solano thank you
