The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve helps lower the car's exhaust emissions. It recirculates the portion of gasses coming out of the engine by putting in back into the intake manifold, where the engine can burn it again, thereby reducing the emissions.

While it's off one should open the plunger on the egr and with a old toothbrush clean all the carbon buildup behind it. The plunger is the star looking screw on the bottom of that egr. Needle nose pliers will help to pull it open.
Also, the egr isn't the only thing with build up. The holes the egr bolts up to also has a passage that leads into the intake, that's where most of the build up occurs.
Don't do just part of the job, do it all, and right.

To test apply 12V to the two lower pins. They will have less than 10ohms. The valve should open outwards. I hit it with compressed air to ensure all debris comes out.
Your the man, simple instructions how to clean the egr. I took my out with a p1490 code 2002 accord, cleaned it and it had so much junk in it I scraped it out with a tiny screw driver too. Put it back in and cleared the light. I drove it and the light came back on right away. Well I looked for a new egr and couldn't find one. Well weeks later the light finally turned off! Now I'm glad I couldn't find a new one and I'm thinking that there was so much junk that it took extra time til it all cleared out.

I tuned up my whole ignition system cleaned throttle body egr valve spent hours and about 250 including oil change .. turns out it was the throttle body and egr valve! Saw the code and fixed it .. bullet knows whassup! I had the same code and also had ignition problems .. two problems solved by good maintenance

injector wire harness is really not in the way if you have a long enough extension.
Right in the center (held by spring inside) is the EGR intake. Mine was clogged so I had to loosen it up and clean it until it was cleaned

@@cesarnava1474 I ended up replacing the ignition cables because they were never replaced(high mileage) and that solved the misfire.
Idling my f23 a little too much, this is what you need to do.
You should put an H22 on that and tune it, you’ll get a lot of extra power

Just bought a good condition honda for 500$ just didnt have a battery and a few small things here and there. But the only code it has is a cylinder 5 misfire but the car runs perfect even when driving "fast". Got the code read at autozone which also gives a suggestion from what other mechanics have dealt with before and it says replace egr valve. Would a good cleaning suffice. The longest the car ever sat unused was 1 month but it got started up weekly
Yes before you get a new one, clean that one and clean the intake, and do a tuneup

So if I just buy a new EGR Valve should the code come off or do I have to clean it and unclogged it if it’s clogged and also would I have to buy a new gadget or can I use the same one it has
Before you put the new one clean the old one and put a new gasket if the old one is damage, if the check engine light is still on remove the negative side of the battery and drive around for a few days to see if that works
If the check engine light comes back on replace the EGR valve

Hopefully you’ll see this comment because I’m in need of help. I can’t seem to remove the two nuts holding the EGR valve down. My sockets keep slipping off of the nuts. What kind of socket did you use for this video? I’m thinking mine are two thick and don’t have enough space.

Hey bullet where did you buy those blue spark plug wires, and are they better voltage than standard, or just for looks, also do you gotta disconnect the battery.
I didn’t notice any difference, it should be better that OEM but I doubt it, you don’t have to disconnect the battery but is up to you

I am thinking of just using a Dremel or Drill with a long, flexible attachment and just boring out the EGR passage (without removing the Intake). Would this idea work? I am waiting now on a new EGR valve. Car throwing codes. Idles rough.

Whats the difference from P0401 and P1491 on a 2001 accord?
P0401 is egr passage low flow
P1491 is egr valve probably bad
What about the passages underneath the plate under the fuel rail. There are 4 under that plate
You have to remove the intake
Thanks for the great video. I have a question, I did everything you said and now my car won't turn over. It cranks but turns over. I have put everything back. Didn't have this problem before. Only had P0401 code. ANy suggestions? Btw it's a standard shift 1999 Honda cyl.
Thanks, make sure that all the connections are in place, maybe the distributor is not connected!! Check everything around the Egr valve and make sure the battery terminals are tide, because if you clean or replace the Egr valve that has nothing to do with the car nor starting

Any suggestions on a P1399 code? After doing a distributor oring replacement I got this code. I know now that my oil leak mainly is coming from the VTech solenoid but wonder why it's all of a sudden misfiring? I have ordered my distributor cap and rotor and plugs so we will see after that but just wondering why the sudden misfires?
If you replace the Oring double check cables and connections, you know that when you work on something, something else always go bad, thats every mechanic situation

@BulletSolano it was fairly new, so I cleaned it instead of replacing..so far three days in, it's running much better but we'll see...thank you for responding..I'm sure I'll have more questions on how to keep my baby(car) alive

You didn't need to take off all the stuff that you took off I got mine out of my 99 Honda Accord perfectly fine just the two bolts so whoever's watching it don't do all that bull crap
