    I have two dischidia ovatas. They are both very full and the largest one has 3+ foot vines. I have left them in the tiny 3 inch grow pots they came in, and are growing 3 and 5 feet away from a southern window. The pots seem like they would be way too small for so many long vines (filled with leaves), but they are very happy. I treat them like my hoyas and only water after they are completely dry. They also have a humidifier nearby. Definitely in my top 5 favorite plants I grow!

    Sphagnum Moss is one the best things to grow your plants in I think. How they provide good air flow and soak up the water is just so nice! 😍

      Great in terms of your single plant, yes. Terrible in terms of how important bogs, where it grows, are for a plethora of rare species and storing carbon =)

    Hi Nick,
    I am a follower & Friend from Queensland Australia 😊
    I luv watching your videos as they have taught me alot about my plants.
    Dischidia are Epiphytic by nature so growing on the wood plaques with moss is great.
    If you want to grow any in medium I have found Coco coir or coconut chunks are a great medium as it holds enough moisture and has enough air flow.
    They also like humidity I have found.
    If your in to the more interesting looking Dischidia I would recommend Dischidia Nummularia Dragon Jade or Bubbles as its also known as 😊

    canadian here! and i work in a plant store. i wanted to mention it depends what end of Canada your living in as to where plants are grown. generally most houseplants that take a few years are not grown in Canada, it costs too much to heat the greenhouses over many winters (think Ficus Lyrata or slow growing Sanseveria). so most house plants we get at our store are grown in Florida and sometimes Costa Rica, then come in through the port of Montreal or more infrequently in through Toronto. Small succulents and cacti are grown in Canada, typically in Southern Ontario or around Montreal. Out west (BC being an exception) from what I hear is a houseplant desert with 'common' house plants still being rare out there. We have students sometimes come in and load up before heading out west, either for themselves or to sell and make a pretty penny.

I don't generally like wall mounted plants, but yours are always on beautiful Bark..... so, TY again my plant brother. Stay well, and Happy Holiday season.

    I really love the way your dischidias are planted and displayed...on the plaques! The moss just adds a lovely natural look, and is good for holding moisture and not be too wet. Your plants are beautiful and unique. I have a large hanging dischidia (common thousand hearts) I've had a few years. It does get very tiny white flowers at times. I've noticed that, underneath the plant...it's getting leaf drop, but the top looks good and is getting growth. I think I need to hold back on the water..especially now in winter. It's one of my favorite plants.

    I was hoping you'd cover it in your video, but what do you do once a plant outgrows the plaque? Do you unwrap the wire and transfer the plant to a bigger plaque? Do you just cut off the parts that dangle freely and put them on a separate plaque? What about the original plant then? Eventually the roots will get too long and the older leaves will die, right? So then how do you go about replanting it?

    I just got my first dischidia a week ago. Dischidia major and it is is awesome!! I love how there are two different types of leaves and how spongy and unique it is. First plant I've ever had in moss and am quite intimidated at letting the moss dry out. I was planning on putting it in soil but I think I'll leave it now. It's so gorgeous on it's trellis! Love your channel btw and how it's always new and different from everyone else's!

    I have a Dischidia Ovata that also has really long tendrils. It's recently starting to grow leaves on them. I grow mine with higher humidity in the bathroom and high LE grow lights. I think key is to make sure to only water when the leaves feel less firm. They don't like being watered too often. Can't wait to see more of your videos like these!

    I grow my Dischidia ovata, about 1 m from a south facing window. It has long vines and even bloomed this fall! I've had it for three years now and repotted it once. I water it the same as with my hoyas, maybe every three weeks but it has succulent leaves and delicat roots so I'm very careful - I let the water rinse thrue the pot. Someone said they have it near a humidifier, I don't have a humidifier and it seem to love life - my climate is about 40-55% humid.

    Hi Nick, I love your channel! I have to share this as I am still laughing my head off! am French speaking and your videos are always translated with French subtitles (part of my settings I guess) and although I’m not paying to much attention to the texts, this particular video translation caught my eye…. 😂😂😅😅…. These beautiful plants have a name « Dishidia » that resemble to another one…. Yep, you guessed it right! So the automatic translation picked up this-not-so-accurate-word to identify this plant. I never thought there were sooooooo many variation of this « word » in French…. It is hilarious!🤣😂😅

    I imported a variety from The Netherlands a few years ago that is one of the ant plants that grow these big modified leaves that ants live in. It has grown so much and i love it so so much. It was labeled just as a Thailand species Dischidia. I now have several different types of Dischidia with a few mounted as well. I have some imbricata i just mounted on a large piece of raw cork bark marketed for reptile enclosures. I have a few growing on the cactus skeleton that i was able to stuff sphagnum Moss inside. I have the green form of the nummularia if you’re interested in a trade once spring comes. I bought two 2 inch pots from joshs frogs a few years ago and i have tons now. I am growing some in a hanging basket that cascades over my kitchen sink. I have to flop the vine to the opposite side of the pot when they start nearly touching my sink but also cut a bunch and have some growing as a creeping style inside a terrarium, some in sphagnum in a vase, some on that cactus skeleton wood. I love them. I have a few more types and scoop any type up when i see them. Since they are relatives of Hoya and Hoya are so hot, they are becoming an it plant now as well.

    What you have been sold as D. imbricata is actually a hybrid of Dischidia vidalii and Dischidia sp. Camiguin Island, which is predominately the plant that is circulating in the US. True Dischidia imbricata (Blume) Steud. is not in US cultivation.

    • @vespirs
      @vespirs 2 роки тому

      To add onto this, what you have as acuminata is Dischidia phuphanensis/former sp. Crested. And your “lanceolata” is Dischidia bengalensis.

    Your imbracata is actually pectinoides. The imbracata has a pale, white-ish green (vs dark green) and its leaves tend to "cup" in more. Here in Asia it goes by different names, "kangaroo pocket" in the Philippines or "elephant ear" in Thailand where I currently reside. That should give you an idea what the leaves look like. Mine, I have several of them, each ends up look like a bunch of grapes! I also have a couple of pectinoides, these like to climb up more whereas imbracatas tend to droop, probably because their leaves can get pretty thick and heavy. One more thing, the pectinoides sometimes also cup their leaves to look like elephant ears, but those are rather thin and "fluffy"-looking compared to imbracatas.

    • @vespirs
      @vespirs 2 роки тому

      Dischidia pectenoides is a synonym for Dischidia vidalii, which his plant is a hybrid of, but is NOT pectenoides/vidalii. That plant has clearly dimorphic leaves with one being a small laminate, pointed leaf, and the other a large complex domatia - it does not produce coin shaped leaves.

    Hi Nick! I'm hoping to find some Dischidia as I love all of the ones you show. I didn't see this in the video, but when you mount Dischidia, do you add soil below the sphagnum moss, or are they just growing on the moss? I hope you'll address this because I think it's important to know. I know some of your other mounted plants have soil below the moss. I would love to have every one of these plants. Fingers crossed I can find some! 🤞 Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful plants with us1

    Doing Chamberlain mentioned on a podcast that he grows d. Ovata in moss. I tried it and it works so well! Maybe you can mount yours in moss?
