Summer Rayne completely flipped my view of common houseplants with a thought she shared during an interview. She said to view your plants as "heirloom pieces" that you will keep for life and pass down. Sure, a common plant fresh from the Home Depot might not be interesting, but it will be very interesting (and very large) when it's had decades of growth. Looking at my own houseplant collection as "things I will have the rest of my life" really helps me appreciate the common ones more.
My grandfather snuck a chunk of cactus home in his luggage, probably 30 yrs ago. When it got too big to lift, he built a ramp to roll it outside every summer (he lived in MA.) When he passed, my mom propagated it so each of his children got a piece. Hers had so much growth, I now have a piece and my kids each have one too!
About a year ago I got a cutting of golden pothos ,propagated in water, watching roots grow and potted it in soil. The plant was doing well and constantly growing so that gave me confidence and I got addicted to plants 😅 now there are more than 60 other plants(most are aroids and peperomia ) in my apartment but still there's more on my wishlist. I learned a lot from you so thanks 😊 🙏
@Marga Esperanza, I would LOVE a philodendron “pink princess” but the greenhouse near me thinks it’s worth $350 (for one small plant in a 5” pot). Yeah, that’s a big no for me so I’ll have to be happy visiting it when I visit the greenhouse. They also have a variegated rope Hoya carnosa for $125 (4” pot). Another nope - I’ll stay with mine that I scored at a local HD for $15. ☺️
I'm so over the rare plant videos, I've even stopped following certain UA-camrs who seem to do nothing but showcase that. I rarely bother with unboxing videos for the same reason. I want to see how the plant is doing six months or a year from now. I just love your enthusiasm for common everyday plants.

My first plant was a hoya carnosa. It's about 30 years old, sits atop my fridge and hangs to the floor. Just cut 1 vine to start up 3 pots + can't tell. She's a beauty. Bought a ZZ in May + love it with 3 new stems. Need a silver bay and a scindapsus but I'm waiting til spring to see what survives the winter. Thanks.

I agree, these common plants are so beautiful and easy. There is a salon near me with just pothos (probably like 20 pothos total), but the pothos are from ceiling to floor and look sooo good, like a jungle.

Good Morn from Pdx, Oregon! So excited to see your new post! Thank you for highlighting these time tested beauties. I am 51, long time plant Mom, and have a collection surpassing 150, non super rare plants. I have a genuine love and respect for plants. I'm really frustrated with the plant scene now. I've found with the Chinese evergreens, they do poorly in medium to high light. Mine kept popping new leafs, but wouldn't open. They'd eventually rot off. When I put them in a low light corner though, suddenly the new emergent leafs started opening. So it cannot be understated how much these plants perform in low light. It's somewhat essential, in my experience.
I have all of these in the list except the staghorn, and they all do well in my home and care. Not really into the rare plant game. I love Accessible plants because they’re kind of like self-sufficient teenagers who do everything without being told and get straight A’s and you know are going to get into a good college and get a job straight out of graduation. Rare plants are like spoiled brat mean girls who will throw a tantrum when you don’t give them your credit card and let them take your car to the mall. Lol
Aglaonemas are the bomb! Just like your common Pothos. These two in particular have brought me so much joy. My Aglaonema tripled in size within about 7 months and flowered like mad. Spectacular really.
I absolutely love watching your videos, seriously. You're such a joy! Thank you for promoting common lovely houseplants. It needs to be said! We should enjoy plants for what they are and what they bring to our houses and not for how much we paid for them! Every single cute peperomia deserves a loving home!
I’ve actually never seen a Red Margin Peperomia for sale around my home. I’d love to get one...loving the upright form and dark glossy leaves. Very nice. Thank you Nick for featuring this beautiful plant, along with the other commons.
Out of all the plants I have, my Golden Pothos are my favorite. It's the only plant I feel fine being with reach of my kids because they don't care if they get knocked over, danced with, or used as a mini jungle for toys. Thank you for showing these tough guys some love!
Yes to scindapsus pictus! I have three varieties but the more "common" Argyreaus is the one I lose track of time just looking at it. The silver splashes really do look amazing against the dark green 😊 Also in love with all my aglonima because I've been able to get huge ones end of season for under $10. I'm all about big plants and common ones really feed the addiction.
I have only common houseplants, however, I wouldn't mind if philodendron gloriosum for a monstera albo falls into my lap, LOL. The most I've paid for a plant was $40 and that was too much for me. Most of my plants are in the $15 and less range.
Your channel is just...The Best and so are you! Would love it if you made a care routine video! Just of one daily care session showing kind of how you go about caring for your plants, what your schedule or lack thereof is, etc.
Thanks for always listing the plants you're talking about, it's so nice to have the complete name. Great suggestions as usual and an efficient video-always enjoyable to watch.
You speak my language Nikki! Give them plants the credit they deserve, I love it !!!! My favorite is also the Scindapsus and the pothos💚💚💚💚LOVE YOUR CHANNEL💚💚💚💚
I thought of the Chinese Evergreen before you even mentioned it. I am obsessed with mine-every single leaf is absolutely STUNNING, without fail. Gives so much and asks for so little in return 😍🌱
These are great, easy care plants everyone should have and start with! And thank you, Nick, for your "taco leaf" advice. That alone has turned me into a successful hoya grower! Other plants, too. Although it doesn't come up in this video, it's the best advice I've gotten and shared on my road to becoming a reformed overwaterer.
Love how you LOVE plants! I totally get it! I buy a plant that calls to me! "Get me, get me"! Sometimes I just "rescue " plants that are on their last leg! Thank you Nick for your time & enthusiasm for plants! 😍💜
My place gets barely any natural light, so I love seeing common plants and plain green foliage getting some attention! One of my favourite plants is my spider plant with no variegation - how common is that?! But it looks so fun and tropical.
I bought Peperomia Clusiifolia Red Margin on sale in a "Save a Plant" section. It hadn't been watered for at least a month, it was just hanging from the pot, looking so so sad. I watered it and after 2 days it turned into one of the most awesome and gorgeous plants I have. It's happy no matter what amout of light it gets, it grows like crazy, and I just love it
I'm only at 5 minutes and already love this video. I haven't had live plants in my house for 15 years because of a pica condition of a family member. But now, this is being managed and I am going to bring plants back in. I couldn't care less that these are common plants because i just want plants that i can care for successfully. These low light tolerant plant suggestions are awesome. I love your video style, Thank you Thank you.
Hi Nick Happy Friday! Always enjoy your videos, plus you're so sweet, glad you're not a plant elitist just showcasing certain plants, you're always showing us that all plants are interesting and fun to grow, we plant parents appreciate that, enjoy your day hugs from Orange County, Ca 🌿🌿🌿💞💞💞💞
I just found you and I love you so much!! Over the last year I’ve become quickly obsessed with houseplants and have started making macrame plant hangers to help alleviate some surface space and add flair. 😍 my favorites of my collection so far is my Monstera Deliciosa and my Purple Heart Tradescantia. Keep the videos coming! I’ll be going back and watching the ones you’ve posted. Also, thank you so much for the Monstera propagation one. The houseplant group I’m in only talks about water propagating them, so it’s nice to see successful soil propagation!!
You are my favorite! I love that you showcase and appreciate common houseplants, Thank you! Sometimes I get upset and mad at my collection because I can't afford to spend so much money only the rare plants, you and these video keep me grateful for the beautiful planties that I do have.
I’ve also been dying for the perfect staghorn! Do you have a video on how to mount them? I know you used to do it at the store so I bet you have an excellent technique!
I love easy growing/basic plants! These are the best plants to learn watering/fertilizing/lighting requirements for more difficult/'rare' plants!! Thanks!!
Vegan antlers!! I can re-watch your vlogs years later and still find my laughs. You are such a wealth of knowledge in a very relatable way! You are the best, Nick.
Collecting all the varieties of pothos and scindapsus is SO satisfying and fun! I've got all of my pictus in baskets hanging along the side of my greenhouse and they look so pretty all mixed together. I walked into a friends plant store the other day and discovered big baskets of scindapsus silver splash for like $20. That feeling of JOY over a $20 plant was so nice!! I am OVER spending $100+ on all the other it plants right now. Prices are crazy.
Nailed it, Nick! I'm tired of indoor plants that crap out on me just because I breathed on them! I have a staghorn fern that I planted about 14 years ago in a wire basket lined with coco fiber. It did fabulous outdoors in the Texas summer heat. It wintered in my greenhouse. It has grown so huge that it long ago completely engulfed the basket. It broke the tree limb that I used to hang it on outdoors. Now, rather than trying to move it in and out of the greenhouse, we put 3 screws in a greenhouse rafter and it lives in there year 'round. When we had snowmaggedon in Feb 2021, the temps were single digits for 3 days. We lost power, too. Many of the greenhouse plants died - not that staghorn fern! It's alive and well and probably 6 feet across. Oof. 😂
The great thing also about most of the plants on this list is that they will tolerate cool rooms in winter also. .I wish they were as easy to find here in rural Ireland as they apparently are where you are. Stag horn fern I have never seen here for sale anywhere even online. and that Agleonema I haven't seen either, Silver queen and maria Christine are more common here.....I would have added Philodendron Brazil and spider plants to that list also as both tolerate very warm and cool rooms and irregular light & watering and look great. thats the great thing about city living and large populations I suppose..There's always more choice.
This is a great overview. I was kind of surprised that Dracaenas weren’t mentioned, as they rank somewhere in there with ZZ plants and pothos in terms of difficulty to kill. But still a great overview. Still need a Hoya and Scindapsus!
I feel so spoiled with all the frequent uploading now! Loved this list of common plant love. I totally agree, my silvery Anne is a favorite in my collection regardless of its commonality 🌿💕🌿.
Nick for ferns, you really wanna go with a rarer kind! Weirdly enough, the common ones are hardest to look after, lol. Try Osmunda regalis or Maidenhair spleenwort (or any spleenwort really) :) we have a fern nursery here in Ireland, I think they ship worldwide, Shady Plants is the name. Check it out when you can.
Funny thing is I disliked the ZZ plant until I purchased and watched it grow... I'm totally converted, but still astonished over the prices that some people charge for itty bitty plants (mine was in a 6 inch pot for 13 bucks, that's my speed when it comes to spending on plants lol) So happy that someone out there cares for the more common houseplants...I love to see the unique ones but the wallet isn't big enough to purchase them.
Great video! Totally love all these plants, except I don’t have a staghorn yet. One I would add that brings me so much joy is the Heart-Shaped Philodendron.
The aglaonemas are such underrated plants. I think they are great to have if you are not able to grow calathea etc. The colours you can get are numerous and definitely worth investigating. 👍🇬🇧
I’m obsessed with scindapsus pictus, too. I have 8 and all of them are outgrowing their stakes which means I’ll probably be propagating even more soon, I literally can’t stop.
I honestly love pothos! They get full so easily :) Funny enough, I can't find it for sale here 😂😂😂 I'll look for it next time I visit some bigger city, lol
The golden pothos that are trailing around my house and on the wall (there's a lot of them!) become so big! I found one leaf that was a big as half of my torso (I'm 151cm girl btw). Now even those photos leaves on the wall are bigger than my head! I disliked photos long ago too because it was everywhere around my house but fall in love early this year with it because I propagated them to put on my room's window and terrarium. I planted My mom got Manjula photos cutting around 2 months ago and it growing well. Mom has hoya since at least 12 years ago and they're still thriving to this day. Her hoya always flowering too!
Scindapsus all the way. Beautiful leaves fast grower in average light and thriving. I’d rather have a spectacular looking common plant than a rare 2 leaf plant that’ll take years to grow if it doesn’t die first. Love your videos. 🌿
That’s funny, a golden pothos is the very first plant that I bought and was able to keep alive. It started my plant addiction and within a 2 month span I acquired 25 plants plus about 40 plants propagating 😅
I’ve heard people talk about maiden hair ferns being extremely hard to grow because they are sensitive and requires a lot of humidity. And I also read that peace lily increase humidity and large house plants retain humidity better. So when I got my maiden hair fern I knew it will die down and it did, I cut all the dead stems off, replanted it and I placed it in a bright place in the room but without direct sunlight, I also placed automatic water dripper in the soil so it always stays moist and I place peace lily on one side and Maranta Leuconeura var. erythroneura (biggest plant I have) on the other. This way it seems I created perfect conditions for the fern to grow without doing anything crazy in my house, and after a few months the fern actually outgrew my maranta plant.
The golden pothos is one of my favorites because of how quickly it grows. It’s so satisfying. My sad fiddle leaf fig put out it’s first new leaf in 2 months and I was ecstatic. Then I looked at the golden pothos I got a month ago and realized it had pretty much doubled in size 😂. The satisfaction of the what seems to be daily new growth is amazing
Perfect video Nick! I have a pictus scindapsus Queen Anne. I love this plant more than anything. I had some problems when I potted her up in a wall pot. I think my planting medium was bad. I lost two calathea in other pots in the process but the Queen Anne survived. I repotted her and within days she was putting out new leaves. I want all the other scindapsus pictus. The leaf patterns in silver are really captivating. Love, love, love these easy, beautiful plants. Ferns -if you don’t have an Alligator (Crocodile?) fern you should try it. This plant is gorgeous and easy to care for. Highly recommend. And, for me all of the pathos, philodendrons that I saw growing up and dismissed now have a big role in my plant kingdom. Love them. They require so little and give so much❤️
Luckily I have never had to buy any of these plants because I have gotten most of them as cuttings from my neighbor who has grown plants for 40 years! Love my carnosa and golden pothos especially 💛
I really like the idea of me passing down my plants (especially the aroids, the common houseplants and like tubers that grow really large in a couple of yrs) to my children or even just my friends when i get older as like friendship gifts or like family heirlooms of sorts cuz i am currently 15 yrs old so i started last last yr so my pothos and all sorts of plants are growing wondefully as of now so im reaallly looking forward to seeing these grow just wildly while i go about my school stuff and all that things and id like to thank nick who i actually really learnt alot by watching his videos especially like the aroid ones cuz those do help out a lot for a beginner like me so love your content hope that you grow snd grow like your beauuutiful houseplants.
Hi ! Thanks for this refreshing video. Scindapsus pictus Argyraeus is definitely one of my absolute favourites. I want to say that I got the best advice for my ZZ from you (not to water more often than you pay the rent) now I don't kill them anymore ! See you soon !
Excellent video. As you mentioned, these beauties have become common for good reason. I always loved the ZZ, and I have found new respect for them. I gave one to my girlfriend for her office. During quarantine she wasn't allowed to go into work for 3 months, when she finally allowed to go in she brought it home- it looked intact ♥️. What a marvelous plant

Lol
Alfred-Love the analogy, and yes, totally agree with you.
I had so much fun reading this XD
Aglaonemas are the bomb! Just like your common Pothos. These two in particular have brought me so much joy. My Aglaonema tripled in size within about 7 months and flowered like mad. Spectacular really.
I absolutely love watching your videos, seriously. You're such a joy! Thank you for promoting common lovely houseplants. It needs to be said! We should enjoy plants for what they are and what they bring to our houses and not for how much we paid for them! Every single cute peperomia deserves a loving home!
I love my Hoya Carnosa, mine is a heirloom plant, it’s been in our family for over 100 years and 20 of us have cuttings from it! Mine grows so well!
There is plain green hoya carnosa mixed into my crimson princess plant. I love it so much, honestly. It is gorgeous.
I love Aglaonema, pothos, and scindapsis. I don't get the hype about a lot of highly expensive plants
Same! :)
Same... I’ll covet those from afar and stick with those I can comfortably afford 🤗
I love those deep green pothos plants. They are prolific and do well in any part of the house.
Loved this video. My fave plants are the basic ones, easy to care for, they grow fast and they make me feel like a plant expert 😆
My place gets barely any natural light, so I love seeing common plants and plain green foliage getting some attention! One of my favourite plants is my spider plant with no variegation - how common is that?! But it looks so fun and tropical.
You sound so enthusiastic and happy, love this video
Thank you! You are my favorite plant person.
I have a 14 foot green hoya like the one you showed! I inherited it from my grandparents, and it's my absolute favorite house plant.
It's happy no matter what amout of light it gets, it grows like crazy, and I just love it
My golden pothos has grown so much putting it in a hanging basket in my window!! It’s by far my most proud plant
YESSS!!! Feeling the love for the Silver Bay!!!
Very worthwhile way to spend time...learning from you about the different kinds of plants (and take care of them). Thanks🤩🤩🤩
I used to be somewhat obsessed with rare plants but it got too stressful. So I'm now appreciating the plants for how they look, not how rare they are.
All plants rare or not are just as special. Thanks for highlighting them. 🌱🍃🌿🌵🌸💕💗
I agree with scindapsus pictus, they look gorgeous and grow like weed
I just love your videos. You seem like a really nice human. Thank you
Collecting all the varieties of pothos and scindapsus is SO satisfying and fun!
Thank you Nick for this video... I love my common houseplants, there are so fun and bring joy. They want to make you happy... no fuss!
I'm totally converted, but still astonished over the prices that some people charge for itty bitty plants (mine was in a 6 inch pot for 13 bucks, that's my speed when it comes to spending on plants lol)
So happy that someone out there cares for the more common houseplants...I love to see the unique ones but the wallet isn't big enough to purchase them.
I received my Scindapsus last week and I'm completely in love with it!!
Great video! Totally love all these plants, except I don’t have a staghorn yet. One I would add that brings me so much joy is the Heart-Shaped Philodendron.
Great information. I love your videos. Thank you
Staghorn ferns are one of my all time favorite. The crocodile fern is popping up at big box stores recently. Both amazing plants!
Hey, You talked me into a Pep Incana last year an I love it!! Like you said, it hard not to touch it when your near by. 😃🤗
One of my favorite plants is my spider. It's so common but gives me such joy.
You are the cutest! Love your videos so much. You have helped me so much throughout my house plant journey. Thank u thank u thank u
I honestly love pothos! They get full so easily :) Funny enough, I can't find it for sale here 😂😂😂 I'll look for it next time I visit some bigger city, lol
Satin pothos are my favorite I know it's not rare but I love that each leaf is a surprise on what pattern it will have and they grow so fast
Loving these easier too find plant videos. 😃💚
I love that you added what to look for when it wants to be watered!
Loving your single Peperomia Red Margin stem....It’s adorable, imma have to look out for one 🙌🏾🌿
I love that round pot your scindapsus pictus is in, where did you get it?
Scindapsus all the way. Beautiful leaves fast grower in average light and thriving.
I’d rather have a spectacular looking common plant than a rare 2 leaf plant that’ll take years to grow if it doesn’t die first. Love your videos. 🌿
That’s funny, a golden pothos is the very first plant that I bought and was able to keep alive. It started my plant addiction and within a 2 month span I acquired 25 plants plus about 40 plants propagating 😅
i have hoya carnosa at home and i absolutely love it, it's one of plants my parents had.
Love your house plants, they look very happy! I am sure you keep them well! Thanks! My favourite was Aglonema!
Great video Nick. And thank you for all the information with each plant! ♥
Love them. They require so little and give so much❤️
I consider all of these lush tropical plants that do no grow here in nature...so they are all rare and uncommon to me! Thanks for highlighting them!
I think every Friday night you should do a video and we have a glass of wine!! Love your info! I finally got 3 Scindaptus Pictus Exotica!!
Loooooooooooove this
I have many of these for the exact reasons you mentioned. Thanks for highlighting these common, but still wonderful plants.
Thanks for all the great suggestions!! I’m a beginner plant owner and always looking for easy-ish plants to take care of :)
