    Wow finally some one speaking up in the plant community and saying what alot of plant tubers are too afraid to say. I started collecting houseplants in 1980 and started following plant tubers in the last year or so. I'm shocked at the prices for variegated plants. When did the plant community become so elitist, and snobbish, setting ridiculous trends, especially for people new to plant collecting, putting pressure on them to spend money they don't have. There are so many beautiful house plants like golden pothos, very affordable, aesthetically pleasing and easy to maintain. No need for IKEA cabinets to put them in either, another ridiculous trend IMO 🙄

    Honestly, I find the pink princess variegation to be quite ugly and the growth pattern of the plant just adds to the unattractiveness. This on top of how hard it is to get and keep the pink. At this point, the only reason people seem to want that plant is as a status symbol, not because they actually like it. The whole point and joy of owning and growing houseplants is to admire their growth, foliage, and/or blooms and getting to know the plant and it's needs, and feeling a sense of pride in providing your plants with a happy and healthy life, NOT showing off that you spent hundreds of dollars on a rare plant that most of the people you are showing off to can't afford or relate to. It makes me sad.

    Prices are high in a way that I don’t really understand, but I try to think about how the growers and sellers are benefiting. Most of them are small businesses (often just one person) and I’m glad they are making money. I love all plants and if something is over priced (IMHO) I will buy something else. I don’t Instagram so I don’t have a plant to show it off, I have it to nurture and enjoy. This will all pass in time. Happy holidays!

  • @neurotika
    @neurotika 3 роки тому +15

    I did listen to another plantuber say that when more people acquire these “rare” plants, he finds them less appealing. Honesty was appreciated but, that’s so sad. And I feel that’s how a lot of people are. They want to be part of some club of exclusivity. I like some expensive “rare” plants (I prefer to call them collector plants) but I will be damned before I spend triple digits on any of them. I can wait.
    I don’t care if a plant is variegated, I don’t care for instagram hype. I don’t care how many people do or do not have a plant. If I like it I’ll get it when the price is right. If I don’t I will not buy it to flip it. If the variegated monstera was $10 I would not buy it. Same for the pink princess. And a lot of trendy plants right now.
    But if you offer me an Alocasia Dragon Scale or Cuprea, yes please!

    I bought a Pink Princess. No regrets! Did I pay a lot? Yep. I love when I see it's going to unfurl a new leaf. It's exciting waiting to see what the new leaf will look like/how much pink/etc. Variegated plants are extremely enjoyable for me to grow for this reason. I think for me I fell victim to "the hype" because PlantTubers introduced me to a lot of plants, and made me realize there are a lot of really interesting plants out there that I can grow. Formerly I only purchased cheap common plants at my local stores (still some of my most favorite plants!) but now I can explore so many more varieties and experiment growing more rare or exotic types. I'm having so much fun with it!

    • @mollycatcolorado9252
      @mollycatcolorado9252 3 роки тому +1

      The reasons you mentioned are exactly why people should buy/collect the plants that they do....because they bring you so much joy, happiness and excitement. Although you might have initially got caught up in "the hype", it seems that you now truly appreciate the qualities and uniqueness of the actual plants. Because of this, I would say you are now a "plant enthusiast" as opposed to just a "collector" (hopefully that makes sense). I think it is great that you are exploring the plant world to see what is out there. Lots of different, specific niches to get into or can dabble in a bit of everything (like I do).
      My concern with the social media plant craze and in particular, with the "rare" &/or "expensive" plants is that some people are purchasing plants that they financially can't afford or haven't budgeted for (impulse buys). But if a person is in a position that they have the discretionary income or have saved up money over time, then they should feel free to spend however much money they are comfortable with on a plant that they will enjoy caring for, whether that is $15, $150 or even $1500.

    totally fricking agreeeee. like honestly i feel like some big parts of the industry are becoming very very similar to the structure of fast fashion. between the speed that growers have to function at(which also leads to a lot of rly rushed and therefore kinda low quality plants) as well as, as u mentioned, all of this coveting and creating the hierarchy that, within a few months, completely changes as trends shift... i rly hope that things can naturally start to slow down as more people accumulate plants and arent all rushing to get more houseplants all at once anymore. then again if much rather have a fast planning cycle than fast fashion, just hope it doesn’t hurt people’s jobs or lead to unfair payment of workers/ possible exploitation of growers/workers (if that’s even a thing? not even super sure cuz it’s like not talked about at all i feel)

As much as I’m excited to see people loving having living things in their home, I often find that people are plant “hauling” things they can’t care for and it’s really wasteful. I don't think people realize how much time and light and pure luck it takes for a tree to grow tall and strong because not many people get to watch it grow from nothing. Everyone should watch a tree grow, and maybe then people would have more respect for these amazing creatures.

And these are the reasons why I do not support plant you tubers whose goal for their channel is to capitalize on the selling of rare plants or plants in general for absurd prices like a few “hobby” turned business plant you tubers this past year. Growing plants should be for joy and to spread and share plants, not to capitalize on the new fad and price gauging.

    I’m so happy you did this video. As some one who went from casual plant parent to crazy plant hoarder I can’t understand the status put on a plant. I also appreciate your content because a lot of other plant channels have become harder to relate to because they’re all about these “rare” plants and less about enjoying and caring for the more common and accessible plants that the majority of us are able to get.

    That was refreshing- thank you 🙏 I have ONLY “ regular “ plants and have for a while though that I was missing out and that what I have wasn’t worth anything- simply and boring, if you know what I mean but I do love them but I felt I wasn’t modern enough or trendy 😳😢 and I also felt pretty poor because I can’t afford those prices that mange of the mentions plant you covered and many more are so stupid expensive!!! Some I perhaps could but I really thought that it was way too expensive for a plant!! I don’t even spend that kind of money on furniture or clothes- I love all second hand but that you can’t get in plantworld 🤪😀 But is nice to hear that other people also find that the plant-prizes have taken a turn for the crazy!! Thanks again for putting yourself out there and know that we are some who appreciate it!! ❤️🙏 Love from Denmark 🇩🇰

    I love the honesty in this video! It’s really sad how the prices are increasing. I also really dislike plant groups (specifically fb) because it’s seems like people are only buying plants to sell cuttings for the price they bought the whole plant for or more. It’s becoming more about the money and less about actually liking the plants :(

    completely agree.
    I am known as the plant girl in my area and now that everyone and their momma are getting into plants I get several dms a week of people saying I need to check out this or another variegated monstera.
    I have two little pups that I pulled out of another cheap monstera that have just been sickly and annoying since I‘ve had them. No way I am going to pay several hundred for another. My big and old ‚normal‘ monstera brings me way more joy.

Really enjoy your perspective 😊 I'm in Europe and I bought a big hoya polyneura this autumn for 30 euros... so far it's thriving and I'm really digging it. But then it's also a well-established, healthy plant. Not some unrooted node that some hack on etsy is selling, trying to make a quick buck...

    Nick, I feel like your my plant soulmate, seriously! LOL. You keep it REAL! I love how you state your opinion on EXPENSIVE, plants! I use to fall into the "peer pressure" of "trending plants". I purchased a TON of popular plants just to seem "cool" I guess you could say. One day I was watering all of these plants, I realized I literally didn't like most of the plants that "broke me" or just in general the species, variegation, etc. This may sound strange but to me when I go water each of my plants (which is literally about as many as you have) I feel like I have this relationship with them, I feel the energy of the plant, just like some of my past boyfriends, SOME OF THEM STRESSED ME OUT!😂 If the plant wasn't making me happy or stressed me out then WHY was I buying for? I realized I was buying it because I wanted to make strangers whom I've never met in person, just online think I was amazing! So I got over that. I'm not going to pay $200 for a wet stick that I know in a year or two will be "3 cents"! So now I stick with what I love, peperomia 💕❣️, monkey tail cactus, succulents & many others but I will NEVER buy a plant expensive or on the clearance rack that I don't truly want and appreciate. I just wanted to thank you for being a real acting human being, UA-cam influencer who is real! You're not trying to sell us or say" oh you should go buy this plant for $300 right now" not everyone can afford that, I once couldn't, and I would have felt horrible probably at the time. What I want for this hobby and I know you want, it's for people to just enjoy their plans and connect with people who also love plants, not to be cool or trending. To me the best part about my plants other than me enjoying them, is to get to know fellow people in my plant community. You can really meet very interesting people, which is to me one of the major reasons I love learning about plants, other people's techniques, stories. So yeah, THANKS NICK! 🤗 HUGS! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU & EVERYONE!!!🎆❣️🎉🍷🥰

    You're completely correct, though. This past year I've seen plant prices skyrocket and it's insane how many people are shelling out big money for something that was a fraction of the price a year ago. I got my Albo Monstera D. Sept 2019 for $50 and she is a mature monstera with holes in her 5 leaves and everything. It was my dream plant for years and I sat on a waiting list for 3 years at my local nursery before they called to tell me they finally got my Cruella for me. I can't believe I hesitated and told them I'd need to think on it because $50 is a lot for a plant. Had I known then what I know now, I would have slapped myself silly for even second guessing on whether I would spend that much money on my baby. Meanwhile, fast forward to today and I'm cautioning my friends who are just starting to get into plants about not buying that "wet stick" of variegated monstera or pink princess for triple digit prices. It's been disheartening to see so many people flipping plants for obscene amounts of money online, and newbie plant enthusiasts have no clue that they are being taken advantage of. I keep telling my friends to hold tight and wait it out. The prices will go back down. Growers are working on getting these designer plants in stores and pretty soon it won't be so crazy.

    I think those discussions are so fun and interesting! I can agree with you on a lot of things you said, the hype around everything variegated is just way too much. Also the prices are so interesting, I live in Germany and here you can get a variegated Monstera leaf for 30 Dollar. But I have to say I completely disagree on the Hoya polyneura! The leaf shape is sooo pretty and its growing really well for me. (In Germany you can get a polyneura cutting for around 5-10 Dollar).

    Glad to see a plant collector (especially on youtube) talk about the hype and prices. I'm older, and have loved houseplants for many years. It's shocking and a little heart-breaking to see the prices and how many pretty houseplants that have been disregarded because they are "basic". I ordered a plant from a prominent online grower, when I received it there were about 5 cuttings in it, three of them unrooted, absolutely unacceptable. I purchased my syngonium albo for 14 bucks 2 years ago and can't believe the cost now--they grow like weeds! I give away cuttings on the regular. I guess it's up to the consumers to set the precedence in what we are willing to spend.....

    Thanks Nick For The Heads-Up About The Polyneura!!! I Would Only Buy It Small Because The Prices Are So High And Its Usually Only 2 Leaves... IF The Plant Is Difficult THEN 2 Leaves Can Quickly Turn Into 1... And A Week Later That 1 Can Become NONE!!! I Rely On My Plants To Keep Me UP... And A Plant With NO Leaves Will Have Me Feeling DOWN!!!

    Thank you for speaking the truth! I've been collecting for many years and I just don't get it these days - ANY plant selling for thousands of dollars is just ridiculous. I feel like newcomers to the hobby want an 'instant' collection so they are willing to pay big for any rare or large specimens, and that's just not what plants are about. I've acquired most of my plants from swapping and searching markets for many years. My plants are big specimens because I've been taking care of them for many years and I've learnt through trial and error what works and what doesn't. That's what plants are all about! I'm feeling a bit bah humbug about it these days, I hate thinking about all these poor plants going home to people who can't care for them properly because they're only in it for the social media glory or because its 'trendy'.

    Hi Nick! This is another video of yours that I really enjoyed! I don't get the hype on the plants you mentioned, either, and totally agree with everything you said. If I could find one at a reasonable cost, I would like to have a Philodendron "Rio" only because I love my Brasil and it would be fun to have one with the white on it. I would love to see a "Part 2" of overrated plants. I tend to only buy plants that I really like and/or love, but won't spend a lot of money on them. I can wait for the price to go down, or stumble on a great buy. When I see "Rare Plant" in a video title for unboxing or buying, I don't watch them because I don't care about those kind of plants. In the past, videos I've watched like this, most of the plants looked so bad, or only had one stem or leaf. I'm like why????? Thank you so much for sharing!

    This paying a fortune for “rare” houseplants is out of control. I have been a plant enthusiast for 30 years and I can’t believe how prices have gone up in the last year, even for common houseplants. It’s crazy that someone just paid $15,000.00 on a Facebook auction for a huge variegated monstera. That plant will lose its value so quickly as the market gets saturated with them and people move onto the next “it” plant or it could just die. The irony is that these more rare plants also seem to be more unstable and moody than the more common plants. I have palms, dracaenas, pothos and ficus trees that are all over 20 years old, they are over 10 feet tall and have to be cut back every year. They were all super cheap and never give me any problems. My more “rare” plants always give me problems. Fortunately though I have never paid a lot for any one houseplant and I never will, if I want something I just wait till the price comes down, which eventually it will.

    Well I have always considered my Marble Queen my variegated monstera. I get variegated half moon leaves on her. I ADORE my P. Red Emerald and have never even had the desire for a pink princess. Too much worry about some thig reverting amd plants are for me to enjoy and not worry/stress about. I adore my Brazil and happy to hear your comments to WHY do we need one of EVERY slightly different plant? started doing that and soon ran out of room. :( I think an underrated P. is the Jungle Boogie. This is a very fun plat to watch grow. BUT it gets HUGE fast.
