Any moisture or drop of water either in the jar, lid, pot, or jam itself can cause mold to grow. I jar things all the time without preservatives and it's safe to just scrape off any mold at the top. That's typically where you'll find them, close to the lid cause of the moisture.

I am just realizing how far I am from the earlier episodes. I still distinctly remember a couple or more scenes I wanted to pause, because it clearly encapsulated the essence of the show in the difference of personalities and styles between Andrew and Steven.
