Thank you Arthur!! 🙏🙏🙏❤️
Thank you so much! I’m only 27 minutes in so far but felt compelled to pause and write. This is so good.
Thank you!!🙏🙏🙏😁
Mike the only issue I have with this series is that I can Only like once ! Thanks ! Great videos!
🙏🙏🙏😁😁👍👍❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for your help. I'm new to using fish finders. I've learned alot.
Thanks for your support Tim! 👍👍
Thank you!
Fish finder whisperer! You the man! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I’m not the dummy I used to be thanks to these videos!🎣
Ha!!😜😜😜😜. Thanks Bill!! 🙏🙏🙏
Appreciate you Mike taking the time to share your knowledge and introductory refresher courses (speaking for myself) are always welcome, thanks!
Thanks for your support Jack!!! I really appreciate it brother!!!👍🙏🙏🙏
Outstanding video !!! It has helped me understand more about what I’m looking at & looking for . I fish De &Md but it has always amazed me when I mark fish you rarely catch them . When I’m not marking fish we catch more ? This is using a garmin chirp fishfinder.
Thanks Mike! Very helpful and Appreciate the great sessions!
🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍😁
Thank you. Very informative!!
Glad you like it brother!! There’s some cool new stuff near the end.
Thank you...great info!
Glad you like it!! Thanks!❤️🙏👍
The go- to for lowrance/Simrad... Thanks again
Thanks Allen!!
Outstanding video…just a wealth of great information there! That said, there is one thing I wanted to correct. Your explanation for why fish show as arches is not correct. I’m a college professor that teaches fisheries techniques and I have a fair amount of training in hydroacoustics as a part of that and I find this is one of the most misunderstood factors. It is not the shape of the fish or the fish’s air bladder (or its scales…I’ve heard that one a lot too). Instead, it is the physics/geometry of the sound cone that causes the arch. The fish is literally further from the transducer when at the edge of the sound cone than when in the center of the cone. If you think of stretching a piece of string from the transducer to fish, it would actually be that far away as the fish first entered the sound cone and would get closer when it was dead center under the transducer. As evidence that the arches cannot be caused by the shape of the air bladder, your arches are roughly 5 feet from bottom to top (measure it using your depth scale)…a fish’s air bladder is at most 2-3 inches tall even on a 10 lb striper. Second, you even mentioned that if your transducer is not level, you can sometimes get uneven arches (front or back leg of the arch is longer) which is very true…that shows it is the beam geometry rather than the air bladder shape that causes the arching tales to form (why else would they be elongated on one edge and not the other except that you have changed the beam geometry). Anyhow, keep up the great work as your videos are a gold mine of information on sonar interpretation and striper fishing. I don’t want my minor correction here to detract from the great work you do on these videos!
EXCELLENT COMMENT!! I appreciate your respect. Thanks for that. I used to have a comment pinned to the top and I’m not really sure if it’s still there. It basically said that there are several reasons for the arch shape, referring to wide cones, targets being at the edge of the cone, ping deflection and the characteristics of a wider the cone. I struggled in some areas to keep this as SIMPLE and digestible as possible. I used no script whatsoever. I did this because every video I’ve seen is geared towards an intermediate user even though it says otherwise in the title. My goal was to only discuss points that could make a fisherman catch more fish and have confidence in what they are seeing and not so much understanding the science. It’s a slippery slope. Just one or two complex terms early in a video will frustrate most beginners because that’s what SO many videos do. Honestly, I do really appreciate your comment and I’m always trying to learn more whenever I can so your comment is valuable to me. The knowledge I share comes from fishing full time and being on the water constantly so I try to present my videos from a fisherman’s perspective.
What’s funny, and I hope you can appreciate this. Look at how long your comment was explaining arches. IT’S HARD TO SHORTEN THIS STUFF UP AND SIMPLIFY IT IN JUST A FEW WORDS!! 😆😆😂❤️
True enough (hard to balance simple and thorough)! And I was very serious in my statement that I did not want my comment to detract from my gratitude for the great work you do...I've enjoyed your videos for a couple of years now and have learned some great tips from you! Keep up the great work!@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
Hey Mike, awesome content as always! Question, is there anytime you would use 165 HW WITH the 3 in 1 transducer? I have the 3 in 1 and thinking of adding a TM165HW to the boat for better reading at speed?
Thanks for all the info mate, keep up the good work 🙌
Hey mike. We have a Lowrance. Wired to a fuse box. Sounder has all filters on.
While the outboards running. I get dashes from surface to bottom every 1.5m
What do you recommend to fix it.
Cheers
Hey can you do a video on running at speed using your 3n1 transducer to find striper and what it looks like not using the airmar. I live on kerr lake and im having trouble seeing fish at speed using my 3n1 on my hds live 12. It would be nice to see a video of you using the 3n1 instead of the airmar.
Sure. Good idea. The side and Downscan you see me use on plane is the Active Imaging 3in1 so it does that pretty well. I’ll work on that for you.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I appreciate it. My cousin in law is Allen may. I think you know him.
The lake I fish on in north Florida is very grassy and makes it very difficult with all the hydrilla, etc. to know what I am looking at. The transducer seems to pick up all the grass as fish. Any suggestions? Your videos are awesome and you are so much help to an old man trying to learn how to use electronics.
Thanks Roy!! I really appreciate your support brother!! All you need is DOWN SCAN. It does an amazing job showing grass and even fish within the grass. Most Lowrance and Simrad displays can run DOWN SCAN and SIDE SCAN. Get the Active imaging 3in1 transducer.
Hey Mike awesome video, also have you fished the raritan recently?
Thanks brother!!!! And Yes😁
I'm going try my luck Monday, hopefully I can catch me a pb, my biggest is 37 inches

Hi, Airmar TM150 300W Chirp vs Airmar P75 600W Chirp transducers to pair with a Lowrance HDS Live unit for saltwater between 150-600 ft? Thanks.
Thank you for sharing this information! This has been really helpful to learn what I am seeing while on the water. I'm only a little ways in but my question for you is...What speed do you have your chart set at and how do you determine the best chart speed?
I use normal 90% of the time. I speed it up a touch when in water deeper than 75 feet or so. I speed it up more when running on plane in deeper water too. The ping takes a lot longer to come back up to the transducer in deep water so that’s why increase it. Your fish returns get flatter and flatter the more you speed it up, but it’s no biggie.
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Thank you! I really appreciate your help and your channel.
@@Steelin2011 it’s my pleasure brother!! I’m glad you like them. 👍👍🙏
Mike do you think there’s a deferents in how you fish for fresh water strips versus salt water
Honestly. Their behavior is almost identical. The time frames in the seasons all happen in one body of water versus the entire east coast. They go up the rivers from the ocean to spawn. In lakes they go up the river section to TRY to spawn. When water gets hot in salt they move north to cooler water. On lakes they move deep to the only cold water they can find. When it’s cold in salt they feed shallow, same as lakes. Freshwater Striper fishing can be very difficult when you’re new at it, but once you figure it out it can be fishing in a barrel. Their behavior gives them away because they can’t leave like in salt. I knew some guys that would say catching big Stripers in salt doesn’t count for whatever reason, when I would say it’s actually the opposite 😂. They are trapped pets in a lake. (Not really easy as catching pets of course, but it always ticks them off when I say that because they are poopooing salt stripers). Stripers are slaves to their instincts. Understanding those instincts is the best tool to catching them. I really like lake striper fishing in winter especially. Thanks for your support brother!!
I believe i have the correct equipment to catch them , its finding them is my problem. Does side scan help when going 20 mph, i only have DI. Or better yet if you dont where the fish are do you always mark fish or bait before you put lines out? I know fish are easier to see in summer on sonar because they are deep but what about the rest of the seasons. Should you always mark fish before putting lines out. (This is Freshwater Lakes I'm preferring too) Your videos are great Thanks
Side scan is the most important sonar on my boat. In winter and spring Stripers move very shallow up on the banks eating Shad that are sunning on the warmer shallow water. Regular sonar will not be able to show you fish in 1ft of water way off to the side on the bank. Most styles of fishing I will not wet a line until I mark fish or at least a lot of baitfish. For winter and spring you won’t need to mark fish first, but you need to mark baitfish. Get sidescan so you can see the baitfish up shallow. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks man come fish with me on lake Russal
One lake I’ve never been on. It’s a decent big fish lake. I have buddies that fish it, but never been.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS it’s a trophy lake
What is the bluish cloud at the top beneath the pollen haze?
Blue is the color of the weakest returns with this pallet. It’s pretty much always present near the surface. There’s all kinds of particles that get churned up. Algae, etc.
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS thank you so much sir👍🏻
You went away from the TM275HLW, is there a reason why?
Just because I never needed the Low CHIRP. That’s all. The high wide is the same as what I’m using now. I went to 2 thru hulls 175high wide and 175M. I’ve been working with Airmar a lot so they switched me over.
So i see you used to use the simrad 3 in 1 transducer. Now you seem to be using airmar. Id like to get your opinion. I have 2 simrad go 9’s on my boat but it was equipped with a basic entry level thru hull transducer. It works ok but i want the high chirp down scan and side scan capability. So im deciding. My boat is a 21 ft center console. I typically fish in the bay at depths between 6 ft to 30 ft. Then in the ocean between 30 ft to 125 ft. I spoke to Airmar and they recommended B75 medium if i wanted to replace mt thru hull transducer. Or the tm165 hw if i just wanted to add on a transom mount transducer which im leaning towards. But my question is how does the simrad 3 in 1 transducer compare to say the airmar 165? The simrad is alot cheaper so wondering why. Thanks
I actually only use the 3 in 1 for side and down scan. I never use it for 2D sonar. I only use the Airmar transducers. The tm165 extra wide is what you want for your depths. The medium 75 is a great transducer, but the 165 will outperform it in the shallow water you fish. 50 ft or less. I am partners with Airmar so I get lots of great equipment to use. I have the B175M and B175 high wide. I fish same depths as you so I never use the M. If I was fishing 100-600plus ft I would use the medium. 👍👍
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS thank you. I appreciate your feedback.
Know I know how to use a side scan
