You were fishing in a great walleye area. I catch both walleye and stripers in that area during the warmer months. Good info you are putting out there.
Loved the video capt! Had some great tips and tricks I always take some frozen bottle waters to put in my live wells to keep my bait a little more comfortable in hot weather. Thanks. Tight lines brother 🎣
That’s a good one! You can even throw them back in the cooler and if you have enough ice you can rotate them all day. 👍👍👍. Thanks for the support brother!! Keep the tips coming!!🙏🙏🙏👍
Good stuff Mike! I spend most of my time guiding on Murray, but that situation reminded me of fishing below the Russell Dam on Clark's Hill. Main differences are that we're dealing with bigger fish and trees there. You were spot on with the o2 level comments. Hopefully, we don't have a major problem here on Murray. Readings aren't looking good at all. I'll find out Friday with my next trip after this tropical mess.
Thanks brother!! I have fished your lake quite a few times over the years. It’s a cool place. I love being able to buy bait right on the water. I can’t think of one other lake that does that. Thanks for your support James!!! 👍👍🙏🙏
Thank you very much on this video, You describing in details all about this has got to one of the most important videos you have made.If someone can't figure out shad and keeping them alive, This is the video to watch👌.Thanks alot❤
This winter!! Email me late fall. Mikesmedley9@gmail.com. Don’t forget brother!! I have a hard time saving contact info. I’m terrible at it so please don’t forget 👍👍👍🙏. I appreciate your support brother!
I really enjoy watching your videos. You freely give out so much information, thank you. Would you please tell in your videos what body of water you are on . Sometimes you do sometimes you don’t , or I miss it . I’m currently try to watch all you you videos. It hard too because I also like rewatching the ones I have already watched, so I don’t miss any content. I live in Asheboro NC , the Jordan Lake video was particularly interesting to me . I have plans to fish for Stripes there as well as the yadkin River chain of lakes . Please keep the how too information coming. I need all tips you can provide . Thank you again my brother 😊
Thanks brother!! I really appreciate your support! I purposely don’t share the location on most videos out of respect for the local fishermen. (Especially if we are catching huge fish) If anyone asks what the location is, I don’t hide it, I email it to anyone that asks. I will gladly share every location right down to the boat ramp and even gps coordinates in an email, but I don’t like to just announce it in the title. I actually get alot more views on the few videos where I DID make the location known, so it can be tempting to be honest.😂. Thanks again Ron!!🙏🙏👍
I typically go short with line behind the boards. The boards are awesome attractants. Stripers swirl at and sometimes bite at them. The shallowest board up on the bank has 5-10ft behind it. Boards closer to the boat will have 15-25ft behind.
I’m glad you like it!! I’m not familiar with that lake. Do you have a chart I borrow for the video? I have received and mailed them before. I fold them into an 8x8 square and mail in a Manila folder. I’d be happy to send it back after I shoot the video 👍👍. Shoot me an email if you’re interested thanks brother! mikesmedley9@gmail.com
I fished there quite a few times back in the NSBA days. That’s a cool lake. I’m trying to do more freshwater stuff again, would definitely be on my list. Soap creek was my goto spot in winter.
Thanks brother!! I have a special relationship with that lake. I transitioned from salt Stripers to fresh on that lake in the early 90’s. I’ve spent MANY very frustrating days out there . I ran out of fishing buddies because I was putting them thru hell, being obsessed with figuring it all out.
Yes sir! I’ve been there and fished hard just to get my butt handed to me! My wife loves to fish but when I’m trying for the striped bass she is about ready to throw me out the boat, she always looks forward to cold weather so she has a good excuse to not go cause she knows it’s not going to be an easy day! Every bad day is usually rewarded if we’re patient enough!
Awesome video, I followed your advice for shad keeping and used it on blueback herring for lake Murray. It works on herring too. I kept 4 dozen bluebacks alive and healthy in a 25 gallon tank overnight for a fishing trip the next morning and limited out pulling boards on lake Murray. All quality fish 24-26 inches too. This series is so helpful, thank you captain Mike! P.S where did you get those rod holders that fit into the existing flush mount holders? I’d like to get something like that.
YES!!! I love it!! I’m so glad you got something useful from the video. 👍👍. Please keep me posted!! I designed that rod rail and had them built by a welder. Unfortunately the welder I was using can’t build them anymore. I’m working on someone else to build them for anyone that wants them👍👍👍👍
Great video. I saw the intro with the two maps and thought, "Great, since I'm headed to Buggs Island/Kerr Lake tomorrow." Then it ended up being on Gaston. Oh well. Do you have any tips for fishing live bait like you did without a trolling motor? My go-to is to drop rods straight down at various depths and drift. The outboard idles at 2.5 mph, plus it's a loud 2-stroke.
Pull downlines all around Palmer Point. Start midway back into the creek working out to the main lake. Ride the left side bank up and down on the points in 20-30 ft deep. Set baits between 30-20ft down. Stay near the points on the main lake once you make it out of Palmer. That’s your best bet. If you don’t mark fish or baitfish there, run down the lake a mile and set em out again. The motor noise can be a good thing many times.
Mike - what have you done with your planer front assembly/clip? Looks like you added a foot or so of fluoro / mono - what's the benefit of that extension?
Hawk eyes! It’s amazing how many people have asked me about that. I just hate the stock giant split ring all manufacturers use. It gets hung up against the arm and your line gets caught up sometimes. I made a longer loop from 90lb steel line. It holds the release a bit further from the arm. I almost never get the line hung up anymore. 👍
Thanks brother!! They are CeSmith rod holders mounted on a pop out rail I designed so I can move them all around for different situations. I WAS referring guys to a welder if they wanted a set, but that didn’t work out unfortunately. I’m working on getting someone else to make them for anyone that wants them. It’s 2 18” pieces of 1-1/4 aluminum pipe welded at a 30* angle with a notch cut out to lock in with your existing rod holder that receives the rail. Thanks!!🙏🙏👍👍
I actually designed the TOS planer floats in this video for redi rig. (The tos is team old school). Redi Rig has sponsored me for nearly 20 years now actually. You can get them at redi rig.com.
@ronalddills4566 cool. Let me know how you like them. They won’t go way out to the side like a board. They just stay away from EACH OTHER when used in pairs.
I find myself using the Navionics app constantly. It’s regularly updated and you can do really cool stuff with it like record past trips and save them. I think it’s $49 a year.
Absolutely, especially in freshwater. There are many times you can’t get a single bite until you fire up the thumper. Some guys use them all year, but late fall thru winter is when most guys use them. I’m hoping to shoot some videos with my thumper this winter. “Thump em up” makes an AWESOME thumper. They sent me one that was half the size of my old one yet performs much better. I think they make one with a remote control too. You can get one at their website or message them on IG 👍👍. Tell them I sent you 👍🙏😁
I use Accurate Valiant 400’s because I use the same reels for every type of Striper fishing in fresh and salt. The Accurate Fury is a great reel capable of every style at a lower price👍👍
If you're looking for video ideas, I think one on trolling motors would be great. Especially for us guys on lakes, we use them heavily.
