Pretty cool Mike! Man I love the sonar videos they have helped me out a ton! Thanks for another one!
Thanks brother!!🙏🙏👍👍👍
Great video capt. Always enjoy your fish finder videos great tips. Thanks brother. Tight lines 🎣
MY MAN!! I can always count on your support! Thanks brother!!!
When the sidescan is showing the jig, the distance indicator is showing how far it is from the transducer. Not just sideways, but depth too.
So when you said it was showing as around 14ft from the boat, but the jig was under the boat, it was showing how far it was from the transducer .... the screen was indicating 15.5ft of water, and the jig was just off the bottom.
It was doing its job!
Yes. That’s exactly correct. It’s been a tough point to explain.
Great video! Extremely helpful! Especially when that dude with the blue gator on his head was jigging at the bow!
Yes. He’s a very silly man. That guy actually chews on rocks. Yucky yucky rocks.
Nice video captain. Very informative!! So many fish so little time. Keep at em !
Thanks brother!!! Looking forward to fall! Hope to see y’all soon. 👍👍🙏
I always wonder when to use 450& 800 now I understand a little more,thanks Mike 👊
Thanks brother!! 👍👍👍. If you have a transducer with a 455 option I would use that mostly. you’re going to get better results in most of the water and depths we both fish. You’ll get way better range. The Active imaging side scan only has 800, but it’s a totally different animal from the ground up. 800 behaves way different in the Active Imaging Transducer. 👍👍. I appreciate your support my brother!!🙏🙏🙏
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS the Active Target Transducer is the one I have Mike
Keep them coming Mike! I'm upgrading to a sidescan 3 in 1 in the new year!
Thanks brother!!
Thanks for the video brother! Side scan has been an underutilized tool on my boat. Got the 3 in 1 transducer installed now and have to force myself to use it more. Hey, I would like to see a video of how you video on the boat. Cameras, mounts, etc. That would be interesting to see in the off season (if there is such a thing) LOL. Godspeed my brother!
That’s really a great idea. I’ll have to get that done 👍👍👍. Thanks brother!! And YES. Use side scan more 😉😉
Thanks Mike.
🙏🙏🙏👍❤️
Another great video
Thanks brother!!! I appreciate your support as always!!👍🙏
On side imaging, one has to account for the depth. To make this short: "Your fish that looked like it was 20 away to the left": One must FIRST add the depth, then the distance to the side. SO... a mark at 20 (in 20 ft of water) is right below the boat. If that mark was at 30, it would be 10 ft to the left. See? Its confusing, I know.
Yes sir. That’s why I showed our jigging spoons that we KNOW are under the boat, yet side scan says it’s 20ft to the left.
One guy had a good video stating the opposite of what you and I think, but there is one thing that he didn’t account for. He positioned his boat 20ft (20 for argument sake, I forgot the exact number) to the side of a concrete pillar that runs from bottom to above the surface. His IR distance meter showed the Pillar is 20 ft away. His side scan showed the Pillar on the screen right at the 20ft mark so it appears that the distance scale on the side scan is accurate. However, that Pillar ran the full length of the water column. When he sees the bottom of the pillar on his screen, it’s likely NOT the bottom of the pillar, but more likely a section of the pillar higher up in the water column. Fortunately for us fishermen, it’s not THAT IMPORTANT 😂
Awesome vid, Mike, and I learned a ton...but I'm still a bit confused why the spoon jigging under the boat read at 10-20' wide of the boat. Is the side scan reporting the "straight line distance" from the transducer, like the hypotenuse of a triangle connecting the depth distance and the side distance from the transducer? (the "for Dummies" course might be too advanced for me! lol)
Great explanation buddy, still haven’t received the emailed return shipping label from your vender to return the wrong hoodie,he was suppose to email me one, keep up the great work my friend.
Thanks brother!! Don’t worry about that hoodie. Jim is a cool guy, I’m sure he doesn’t mind. I appreciate your honesty though. 👍👍👍
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS thanks buddy, just let me know if needs it back, keep doing what your doing my friend.
@@striper8311 yes sir 👍👍🙏😁
I still wanna make a film with you....finding time will be the challenge......Chesapeake Bay this fall??? Love the content.....keep grinding.
Thanks brother. I’m trying to do more freshwater stuff this winter. Been staying up north later each fall. Right thru Christmas sometimes. Lots of requests for lake videos. We should probably make something happen. Chesapeake can still be a possibility. I never say never anymore. I just go fishing. 😉👍
got it. Is the depth where the blank dark screen ends out to the sides and the brown begins?
Yes sir!! You got it. 👍
So the side screen shows how far out but how can you tell the depth? Are you looking at a screen sideways? Trying to get this set in my head…
The depth is displayed in the upper left corner. You don’t have to look sideways. Left side of screen is port side of boat. Right side is starboard. The line down the middle is the center of the transducer. 👍
In Side Scan, the distance on the screen is slant range, not depth, correct? And you get an idea of depth from separation of bright spot and shadow?
How many degrees from vertical would guess you can image a good sized fish?
Be Well!
It’s so tricky. I’ve had guys send me formulas to use that may or may not work. The variable that makes it toughest is where the return is in the water column. Like you said. One guy posted a video that seemingly proved the opposite of what is happening in my video. 😂😂. Yet they happened. It’s a huge mystery I guess. Fortunately it is not very important. I’m not shooting fish with arrows so I only need to be so close 😛😛. Using a slant range like you said is probably the closest fastest single method to use.
Hey Mike. Your ducer must be angled down in such a way that the beam is actually angled forward if you're seeing the jigs from the front of the boat. The ducer is mounted on the transom right?
Good eye. I tilt all of my transom mount transducers down in the rear slightly. 1/8” usually. Doesn’t take much 👍👍
Hi Mike. You helped me out with Airmar and Joey Scruggs. What 7-9 inch Garmin andSimrad sonar MDF would you suggest. with mounting bracket. 225 grady tournement. best Mark
Hey brother!! For more hardcore guys like you the deals on NSS Evo3 displays are great. Since the Evo3 S came out (which is great) the deals on the EVO3 Are awesome. They all have brackets and will knock the snot out of any other MFD out there. 👍👍
Hey Mike. Helpful and informative video. Thanks for posting. Quick question, (maybe you posted and I missed it) but are you using the AI3in1 ducer? Or did you upgrade to the HD Active Imaging ducer with the S3100 module?
Thanks brother!! This is still the original Active Imaging 3 in 1. I’ll post some videos of the new system this fall. 👍👍
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS YEAH!!! Activeimage HD is coming. It's already out for the Lowrance side of the house. I wish it came on the Simrad side first, but what can I say, I'm a Simrad snob. lol.
Hey Mike what's up , my side imaging left side is right , and right is left how do I fix?
Go into your menu on side scan page and flip it. It will say LEFT RIGHT. 👍👍
I'm thinking its the hypotenuse distance of A2 +B2 =C2? It seems about right mathematically.
That’s as good an answer as any. So much depends on how high or low the fish is in the water column. Because there are basically two “wedge shaped beams” “looking” down and to the left and down and to the right, both sides are kind of folded out on the flat screen. Multiple dimensions displayed on a single dimensional display. The deeper you are, the wider the “center” section is nearest to the bottom so that “fold out” makes things a bit more distorted. Dang that’s hard to explain 🤪. I hope at least half of that makes sense. I was never good at math, I’m just a fisherman 😆. What’s funny is, I have lots of experience using side scan so I got pretty good at guesstimating. I really don’t even look at the range numbers anymore and manually set the range. Thanks for your comment brother!!! I appreciate it. 👍👍🙏🙏
When the sides go inwards like that twords the end, does that mean you ment inti a creek channel or somthing?
They move inward as you go into shallower water. They move outward as you cross a deeper creek channel.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Thanks.
Can you sidescan down to 70m/210f with a 3n1 active imaging?
Sure. It will scroll quite slowly, but it will work. 👍
Great job like always, brother. Thanks, one question you know I have a B175H and the active 3-1 I have them both set on high Chirp is that correct?
Yes, definitely use high CHIRP on the 185. I wouldn’t use CHIRP at all on the Active imaging 3 in 1 since you have the b175. 👍👍
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I knew something was off. Thank you, my brother
You got it brah!! 👍👍👍
What transducers ya running ?
Active Imaging for side scan.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS sweet what 2d do you recommend I’m on the Chesapeake and do alot of trolling , jigging and live lining ?
@darienfisher7168 the tm165 high extra wide is perfect for you. It’s killer and the best for where you fish. It doesn’t come in a thru hull though. amzn.to/3PAn6gS
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS thanks man keep up the good work love this series and good for me I like the transom mounts
Great video. Know you need a good title but stop calling your audience a dummy lol
ha!! I can’t take the credit for that one. One of the most popular “how to” book series ever published is the “for dummies” series. In fact, the number one SEARCH term to my sonar series on my channel is “Fish finders for dummies” it’s why I started using it years ago. It just means “learning made easy”. 👍👍
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERSand I'm new to the more modern electronics and the how to dummy series helped me tremendously 😅
@troy1594 Thanks brother!! I’m glad they helped 👍👍👍
Curious. What does sidescan appear like with a trolling motor mounted transducer turned 90 degrees from the bow, motor off?
If you were drifting slow enough, would the forward facing scan look right as the "history" passes? Long time til spring up nort' to check it out
If you turn the motor the same direction you are drifting it looks normal, but if you set to straight off the bow and drift sideways both sides keep varying. Smooth than blurry. Etc.
I was hoping the forward facing "edge" of the transducer would yield a good view in the drift direction
@@SirLoinofBeef235 it would if you’re going fast enough. I had them on the trolling motor before. If you’re not moving at high speeds you have a blurry screen, but not a useless screen.
