The very first story featured on John Craven's Newsround back in 1972 was about violence in Tom and Jerry. In the intervening years, I can quite honestly say I've not once had the urge to flick a mouse off a piano.
CONTEXT - So, at one point, in 1972, a man started a campaign to end Tom and Jerry on the BBC, which was airing the cartoon series (since around the late 1960s), and, according to the interview on (John Craven's) Newsround, the only thing that stopped the campaign was because he was sent many "fan mail" (from children) telling him not to cancel the series.
Thank you Steve for featuring Tom and Jerry. It was my favourite cartoon to watch in the 70's and early 80's. I loved the slapstick humour, and even as a young viewer didn't think of emulating it on anyone or thing, it was just a cartoon. I prefer the earlier cartoons, and still find them funny today, I used to love the howl that Tom made when Jerry really hurt him! I viewed them with such an innocent mind, so any meesages about race or violence went right over my head, but as I became older realised that it was the attitudes at the time when the older cartoons were made. Thank you for creating this retrospective, it really has brought back some happy memories.👍🏻
No worries! 👍 I'm pretty much in agreement with everything you've said there. The very oldest cartoons (first run) are really the only ones I go back to as well, if I'm honest.
This is brilliant ! T&J was my favourite cartoon when I was a kid in the 1970s & 80s, I always found them absolutely hilarious & was always disappointed when they finished, they were each only about 5 minutes long & I loved it when a double bill of 2 episodes were shown back to back! 🐺🐹
I imported the Golden Collection blu-ray from the US and was disappointed that volume 2 was cancelled. The best part it was all in chronological order, uncensored and the transfer was great. I wish they did this with Looney Tunes. I have their golden collection DVD’s which is great with many special features and being uncensored.
I used to have a lot of these types of old cartoon collections on VHS years ago, but like many people I binned all my VHS tapes when DVD came out. Feel like an idiot now.
@RetroSpectives Give me vintage uncut TAJ any day over the snowflake-safe garbage we suffer now. Old school Looney Tunes output is timeless and terrific, too.👍
When I watched the first episode all the way through recently, I felt she was portrayed more as the house owner than the home help. It's particularly noticeable in the episode where she's getting ready to go out with her friends.

Really enjoyed this, fond memories of watching these cartoons, can only echo the featured comments in the video 👍
Pretty much the same for me.

Another great dive into my childhood

No worries. Thank you for the comment. 👍
Baby puss was the greatest cartoon ever made. Turned me into the BABY FURRY lover I am today!
Mouse dress-up, or other animals too?

Classic era TAJ is the only TAJ for me.😉
Pretty much, if I'm honest.

Honestly I always thought I never knew the ladies name was mame two shoes never thought it was racist just thought she was the house owner

tommy gun- american, jerry-the hun, spike-british bulldog, so the mouse was the trouble causer. ..............
Interesting philosophical analysis. I always suspected, whilst watching as a six-year-old, that there was more to it! 🤔😉
