Circus Circus - LCD Game by "Q&Q" Retrospective
You know, at the time, as a young child, I had no idea that my beloved Kia-Ora ad was racist! I had no concept of racism. But the makers of the ad must've known... Even the reference to it being too orangey for crows (I'd never heard of Jim Crow before today). It is, retrospectively, disgusting. Still, if the objective was to make me get my mum to buy the drink, it was a sucess. However, if there was a hidden agenda to make me grow up to be racist, I'm happy to report that it failed. Despite loving singing along to it. There's much about that era that makes me wonder now, how could we not've realised? Like all the young teen girls including myself responding "Yeah" to Gary Glitters question "Do you wanna touch... Do you wanna touch me there?" Wow, how naive we were, with Gollywogs on our marmalade jars, and Jimmy Saville on our TVs. But there is much I still cherish, and I'm grateful for the fond nostalgia as well as the shattered illusions of innocence. Merry Christmas! x
I reckon everyone who owned the eval kanival ! Stint bike has it right up there as one of their all time favorite toys. As i was 6 in 1980 too this is my childhood in a video .
That toy desperately needs a re-make.
I wanted tin can alley for years then i finally got it and it was the most disappointing thing ever . You had to play it in the dark So good luck during daylight hours . I had to set it up under the stairs ! .so all those who wanted but never got it count yourselves lucky it was crap . Haha i was mid way through writing this when you mentioned it
I still want one though. 😊
They had me convinced they were two real upper class ladies until I got a little older ,
They are extremely convincing, aren't they?
Hi Steve this is a great channel I loved your video at looking at the old Argos catalogues and all your other retro videos on toys etc Happy Christmas to you 😀👍
Thanks Paul. I find there's plenty of material to choose from with the channel's general retro theme, rather than just doing retro games or one specific type of thing. I have a brainstorm list for future videos that should last for years to come. Happy Christmas!
Awesome :) Where did you find such pristine recordings of the music that was playing in the background?
It's an actual classical piece (royalty free as it turned out). Easily searchable - Carol Symphony by Victor Hely-Hutchinson.
I'm 48 and i always wanted the bigtrak 😁
Remembering Hinge and Bracket (1970s/80s Comedy Duo) 1119am 24.12.24 i lived in rochdale in the early 90's and i knew hinge and brackett aka alison and emma of freehold.
Thank you so much for this vid I worked with them several times when I was a junior acting stage manager at the Redgrave theatre in the. early 70s the Dr on the piano was always a bit bored about the stage management rehearsals and sat in the stalls looking like she was sucking a lemon Patrick was usually in charge of setting up and was much jollyier they were both very professional Robert Gray
Thanks for sharing that. Loving these old anecdotes from people who met them back in the day.
I remember cutting the things i want and putting in an envelope and ask my mom to send it to santa in the north pole i was very young back then every time i get the things i want 😊❤
That was a great idea! You've triggered a memory for me too .. I used to cut out stuff I liked from catalogues and magazines and make collages in a scrap book. Really wish I'd kept my scrap book.
I have the best memories watching box of delights, I was 12 and it was so magical to be transported into that make believe world, especially at Christmas..🎄🎄 Wish I had a copy of the DVD.. ⭐️🎁🤗
Been a while since I did the video, but I think the DVD was only about a fiver. eBay should sort you out if nothing else. Happy Christmas! 🎄
I lived near the Trevor factory In mansfield Nottinghamshire now demolished and a print company has built on it 😢 and we had the fizzy pop company mandora across the road loved the 80's
Used to have a Dayla depot in my town, and a Nestle factory too. Both blocks of flats now. Love the autocorrect by the way .. 'Trevor' Mints? I knew exactly what you meant though. 😄🤭

Immediately read that with the Rentaghost theme in my head! Brilliant! 🤣🎶
I saw their show, modestly entitled, "Sixty Glorious Minutes" at The Ambassadors twice, absolutely fabulous.
Must have been brilliant seeing them live. I've heard they were often much more risque when on stage and off-screen.
@RetroSpectives The audience was fun too.
I never thought of them as drag queens
In hindsight, I have to admit it's difficult to pin down a label. Some have taken the term 'drag act' as a little disrespectful. I'm not sure what's opinion and what's objectively right. I will be doing some looking into this. So far, "female impersonator" seems to be the best option.
Japan made great toys now it's poorly made Chinese cheap crap!
Mostly, yes. A lot of pound-shoppy stuff is absolute tat. Still some quality stuff out there (recent shopping for grandchildren in Smyths) but it can be pretty pricey. Problem with shopping for kids, is I want a lot of the stuff myself! Big kid! 🤣
Thanks for the memories! Still have my BigTrak although it’s up in the loft. Might see if it still works, wonder what the kids would think of it? Merry Christmas,
Worth a shot. Those vintage toys were often built to last.
Thank you so much, brought back fantastic memories of seeing them twice live. Happy days…
I'd love to have seen them live.
They truly were great performers in their own right. The act was brilliantly conceived to perfection and the back stories to both Evadne and Hilda was so honed it was impossible not to believe they were not the real thing. I saw them twice on stage and laughed hysterically throughout. Their musical prowess was beyond compare and through them I was introduced to the likes of Gilbert and Sullivan and Ivor Novello etc. They encompassed everything...radio, tv, stage and recordings effortlessly. A great team that are sorely missed.
One of the things for me, was their friendly, inclusive demeanour. I felt drawn in to their world like they were my friends or family, and this added to the warm feeling of their humour.
Anyone have demon driver?
I think the advert for that might be on a video on my other channel.
i have a spirograph
we have an electronic battleship, i still have a perfection.
Some things are best forgotten
Looking forward to going through this content 😮😊 so far it's brought back memories from the past I forgotten about . I've still got alot of my toys . The adverts and catalogs made me feel like child again as you showed the toy sections 😂 fantastic.
Welcome aboard!
8:34 - what is the line - I just can’t make it out 😢
"Paste, my dear." Paste is a type of antique jewellery made from glass. The joke is that Evadne thinks Hilda is accusing her of being drunk.
@ oh yes now you say it I can hear it! Thanks :)
great nostalgia tv channel
I met the delightful duo @ Swansea Grand Theatre when I was about 21 (I'm now 60!!!) They were wonderful... so generous with their hospitality but refused to speak to each other off stage... separate dressing rooms and the most brilliant wigs/hair pieces I have ever seen... superbly blended into their own hair They were kind, generous and (by that point in their careers) hated each other… or so it appeared.
I've never heard anything about that before. You'd think they would be best of friends the way they share a chemistry on-stage.
i remember Hinge and Bracket so well. To paint the picture. I was part of a long term loving gay relationship and remember the first time we saw them was on a morning TV programme.( TV meaning Television) We had quite a discussion regarding that first viewing as to whether they were drag? They were very convincing and certainly knew their Gilbert and Sullivan. Some time later we saw them live at the Grand Theatre Blackpool, Their show was set in a Victorian Parlour and was amazing. My favourite was Hilda watching what was going on at the piano through the powder compact mirror. Moving on. I was surprised when my other half, who worked in a well know department store, told me that Patrick was shopping there and flirted with him and actually invited him out for dinner. That, of course, came to nothing. Those are a couple of my recollections of Hinge and Bracket.
Thanks for that. It's been really lovely hearing lots of stories from people who met them back in the day.
Love the pullover
Has to be done, really. 😂👍
I was so happy to see this come up. I loved Hinge and Bracket. I was a young newly married woman when I first saw them on a lunchtime t.v. show. I have to admit that that first time I really thought they were two elderly ladies and thought it was rather an odd act to put on at lunchtime. When I saw them again the penny dropped and I found them hilarious. I watched everything they were in after that. Thankyou for bringing back the memories x
You're welcome. I'm not an expert in the subject, but definitely a fan.
@ ❤️❤️
saw them at the Marlow Canterbury, hilarious blue show
I've heard they could be quite bawdy in their live shows.
Dear Ladies, such a wonderful & happy time watching their performances on TV. Two great talents. Sadly Missed God bless them both.❤🙏❤️🙏
This is one of the most prominent parts of my childhood. One of my best childhood memories.
Brought tears of Laughter watching these two once again....!
Omg I had no idea they weren't two old ladies!! Wow. I was more clueless back then, I suppose and also I didn't see them that much. I liked the two Ronnie's
Can't really beat the two Ronnies for iconic.
I'm pretty sure Logan didn't retire immediately. He carried on for a while solo.
Of course you're right. I kind of truncated the script there a little bit for pacing. Should have ironed that out.
I remember getting a Pac Man game watch for Xmas in 1982 . love it .
Great into, thanks for the videos this year. Hope retro Santa gets you something nice, Merry Christmas!
Thanks. Hoping for one of those Simon toy remakes, or maybe the remake of the Atari 2600. Santa baby ... 🎅
Patrick Fyfe came from Stafford. The fictional village - Stackton Tressel, is a play on the name Acton Trussell here in Stafford.
Nice little factoid.
71 child here, I agree with most of your picks. I had the Action Man Training Tower and it was awesome. We had them going way further with our own string.
Sound like a lot of fun! 🙂
I wasn't born until 1993 but I stumbled across these two a year or two ago. Its oddly frustrating how little there is to buy. There aren't a lot of dvd releases as far as I know and getting recordings is proving difficult. I wish they woukd officially release everything they had.
Nice to discover something before our time, after the fact.
I remember them as a child & the ongoing conversation about them between my father & elderly grandmother. She was a fan & refused to believe they were two men even when presented with the evidence! Now I always enjoy rewatching or listening to their performances: humour with just a touch of spice especially from ‘Dame Hilda’. Funnily enough in some ways they remind me of the above grandmother’s four unmarried sisters (who lived together & were eccentric but funny & very kind to all their great-nieces & nephews when we visited). When I imagine the “dear ladies” of ‘Stackton Tressel’ it takes me back to childhood & my own relatives. The audio book of DH’s memories is well, worth a listen - shows quite what a consummate professional Patrick Fife was when creating the immortal character of ‘Dame Hilda’. George Logan was equally skilled if not quite so exacting in terms of his character. It was a pity the partnership ended so early with Fife’s death.
The book sounds like an interesting insight. I'll have a look for that. Lovely story about your elderly relatives. Funny really, not accepting the truth regardless of facts .. seems to be a theme these days too. 🙂
Loved these two they were brilliant
I had a bigtrak, and after about 6 month's i stopped playing wwith it cos the novelty wore off, also i got a he man and castle greyskull, and i did have quite a few of the toys me during the 80s, wonderful memories
Quite often the case with many toys .. novelty factor.
loved them great
Many thanks, I worked as an assistant film editor at the BBC in Manchester where their TV series was made. Roy Newton, the editor and I cut the film inserts for the studio based show. It was always a delight when they came to view our sequences, always kind and amusing.
Sounds like a great job to have, and the privilege of meeting them too. 😃
I loved Hinge and Bracket. They might have been technically 'drag' but to me they were convincing and so loveable.
Technically yes, I suppose. More classifiable as 'female impersonators' really.
Halcyon days. I was very fortunate to get the Lima train set that year, wasn’t long until my little brother broke it unfortunately.
That's a proper shame.
I also liked Flanders and Swann
I duckin hated H & B. A pair of freaks that were wheeled out every Christmas. No, not loved and definitely not hilarious.
