    Its so tricky for me in the northeast to figure out when to put pre emergent. I actually got the barricade this year i can't wait to try it.....but the temperatures are so wacky right now up here, this weekend will be almost 70 during the day and 28 at night. I suppose i can start measuring the soil temps this year to get a better idea. The weeds that come up in one spot are so annoying, it looks like creeping charlie and it sprouts up pretty early and NO weed killer has worked on it, it just turns it yellow but doesn't get rid of it.

    Thanks for the video. I've got one question though. This spring will be the 1st time for me to use a pre emergent. Ive got a battery sprayer and I'll be using liquid. My question is, how long should I treat the lawn for? 3, 4, 5 months worth? I'm in Canada and I have Kentucky blue grass. I'm aware that I won't be able to seed any new grass while using the pre emergent. I am assuming I'll have to use enough to cover May, June, July, August, September. Would I be correct to put enough down to cover all 5 months? What should I use with it? RGS, fertilizer and possibly some PGR in the hot summer months? Thanks!

    • @TheLawnReview
      @TheLawnReview  Рік тому

      Thank you for the question! I typically do about 4 months worth of protection. I think that’s enough to get me through the heavy germination period of the weeds. Then when you seed in the early fall make sure you put down Tenacity directly on the seed. Then once you’ve cut the new grass in the fall (2 or 3 times) go ahead and put down another dose of pre-emergent for the winter weeds. (At least that’s what I do!) I don’t usually mess with growth regulation. Just a little more technical than I like to go and I don’t mind cutting once or twice a week. I’d encourage you to check out Ryan Knorr’s channel. He’s a fantastic cool season grass resource. I know his company Lawn Supply also sells GR’s that you might be interested in! Thank you for the question though.

    I usually wait on the pre-emergent treatment till April (in central Massachusetts) in order to get protection (mostly from crabgrass) further into the warmer months. I use a “step program” product that offers (an expensive) product that allows for “seeding”. I always seem to need to reseed some of the lawn each year. Winter kill (according to my local landscaper). SO…do you have any guidance, other than what I’ve described, to get/keep my lawn in shape? Thanks for the video. For the most part, it reinforced what I already know to do. Always looking to improve.

    • @TheLawnReview
      @TheLawnReview  Рік тому

      Hey Jonathan! Thanks for the question! So a couple questions (I'll try to provide an answer in my question too.) Yeah, lawn care regiments be extremely dependent on where you live.
      1. What type of grass are you growing? Unless you're growing a unique turf type I'm assuming you're using a cool-season grass. In which case I (almost) always recommend strictly overfeeding in the fall. In your case early fall if not late summer. You will have a much better take and seed success in the fall and spend a lot less money watering in the late spring/early summer trying to keep that young grass alive.
      2. What type of preemergent are you using? If you're up for a bit of a hassle and want to be able to apply seed AND put a preemergent down then you can use a product called Tenacity (liquid herbicide). You need to apply this the exact same time of putting down your seed (or within 1 to 2 days of seeding). It's one of the few pre emergents available on the market that allows you to kill existing weeds, prevent WEED germination AND still allow seed.

    • @jonathangiven9073
      @jonathangiven9073 Рік тому

      @@TheLawnReview great answer. I use Scott’s 4 products. And I put down their fall fertilizer religiously. Sometimes I miss #3…timing. 🤷🏻‍♂️. Last year, we had a bad drought. I gave up watering in August. My well water source has limits. By September, I started re-seeding and watering. It worked well enough but I still need more seeding to start this season. I use Jonathan Greene’s brand seed…deep rooting “mostly Sun” version.

    • @TheLawnReview
      @TheLawnReview  Рік тому

      So, honestly I think you'd be happier with this product from The Anderson's (linked below). It's a higher quality product than the Scotts in my opinion. I supplement that program with Ironite between application 1 & 2 and again between 2 & 3 for that extra green up. Not 100% necessary. Keeping your lawn fed properly in the summer will actually help it to stay green and "awake" in the summer heat (depending on how hot it gets). But my recommendation to the original question would be to wait, get your weeds under control, then overseed big time in the early fall, cut it twice. Then put preemergent down in late fall to prevent winter weeds. If you're a subscriber I'll be putting out videos all year long walking through the process! Cheers!

    • @TheLawnReview
      @TheLawnReview  Рік тому +1

      Not at all! It’ll just prevent the weeds from spreading any further. But if you’re dealing with patchy areas that you want to fill in this spring, you cannot put down a preemergent as the preemergent will prevent grass seed germination just like it will weed seed germination. How bad are the patches? Is it possible it possible for you to wait to fill them in until the fall?

  • @snapcult464
    @snapcult464 Рік тому

    Another good first start is to take some samples and send them off to get a soil test so you can see how much nitrogen is in the soil and any toxins that might be present. Normally pretty cheap, 20 bucks, and most can give you a amount of nitrogen to get you going.
