Scalping and Dethatching After Killing The Lawn - Lawn Renovation Step 3

  • It's time for step 3 of the lawn renovation and I'm combining a couple things today and scalping and dethatching the lawn as one step. Scalping will cut the grass as short as the mower will go and then dethatching removes more of that dead grass and opens up the lawn so we can seed and get good seed to soil contact.

Recently subscribed after a binge of your lawn vids. I really like the straightforward no nonsense format, but the explanations are what hooked me. A logical explanation of "why" shows me you know your stuff.
I followed your link for a dethatcher and have been waiting over a week for it to be shipped. One week, and all they have managed to do is generate a label. Did some research to see if I could get one somewhere else, but that model seems to be in the works for discontinuation. I checked the manufacturer's site, and found this in the Q&A from 3 months ago:
Q "What is the difference between the Model 27022 and Model DT14B00 lawn dethatchers?"
A "Model DT14B00 is the most recent model. We have upgraded and reworked the internal electrics and transmissions to make it more efficient and more reliable. The newer model has a slightly different look and is designed to be more user friendly with no height adjustment options. As we found there's one ideal setting that works best."
Read into that what you will, but looks like they actually engineered it for the "lowest common denominator" consumer.
Thanks again for the great vids, Ryan, looking forward to learning the "why".

Not gonna lie, between you and the guys over in the LCN FB group, I couldn't resist and went ahead and bought the Greenworks Dethatcher. I wish you showed us the lawn after you raked up the dead thatch and how it looked when you were finished. Show how exposed he soil was. Less of you looking into the camera talking to us and more footage of the Labor and your voice just speaking over it. Most of the footage on your page is like that. Just a tip/request. You do great stuff just wish you showed more.

you know whats weird Ryan? when I was a kid, I hated mowing the lawn. Now that I am older and have a family and a house, my favourite thing to do is to take care of my lawn. I have Kentucky bluegrass as well. Im thinking of doing what you did because one side of my lawn is mixed with perennial grass along with my bluegrass and the right side is full of bluegrass. I really enjoy watching your videos and it really helps me understand better.

I dethatch once a year and it's a great investment. If you consider the price to rent, the hassle of lugging it to and from the rental shop, it's a much better deal to buy it. I have the Sunjoe just because its available where I live in Canada. Its great. TIPS: do not run it over your edges or else you'll scalp your lawn, always use it on the surface of the lawn. Start with your higher setting first and then lower as you go - again to prevent ripping up (healthy) grass. As you move around corners, lift and reset it down. You'll get the hang of it. Do your first pass somewhere you dont care about as much - a back corner or boulevard and you'll quickly see how to work it. You're going to need a lot of yard bags, you'll be surprised. Dont bother using the mulch bag that comes with it - it fills up super quickly. The Sunjoe allows you to switch to a power rake and it helps to clean up after you've dethatched.

  • @Methodical2

The best way to do this is to dethatch before seeding. Don't rely just on aerating. I tell folks this all the time and they still try to aerate and seed with not much success. You have to expose that soil for good seed to soil contact or at least top dress after seeding.

My GreenWorks dethatcher is pulling up grass, Thach, and dirt on the 0 settings and doing the same on -3/4. The ground is very uneven in some places and not in others. The previous owner had a large dog that created these. Should I keep using it and pull up all my grass to even out the dirt then replant seed?

I'd recommend topdressing with 70% sand 30% compost mix. The sand will do a much better job leveling and with the dead grass it will be much easier to apply. I know sand sounds counter intuitive when seeding but you are only adding a 1/4" or less and the sand will actually force the roots down.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 років тому

I plan to add sand in the future but I need waaayyy more than 1/4 inch to get some of these holes filled so I'll be using topsoil which is the same soil structure as what I have. When I can start topdressing sand in small increments I will be doing that down the road.

There's an end of winter weather forecast for a major drought this summer in Australia. It's already happening in Queensland and New South Wales, farmers are struggling. Should get yourself a flail blade power rake, set er low n tear the hell out of that grass down through thatch layer to the dirt. just be careful of flying rocks! But it will spit out a nice thin soil layer behind it as it goes. Afterwards seed it and plug it twice. Throw down some 10 10 10 as starter if its cool season grass. Water 10 to 15 mins 3 times a day, start mowing when the first blades hit 2.5 to 3 inches to thicken it up.hit it one more time with ten ten ten in 6 weeks, or before if its looking pale n ur good to go. Im really suprised your honda doesent go lower then that? Unless the vid didnt do it justice. Ive got one thats about ten years old no bells or whistles 3 speed self propelled, twin blade cheapo. It’l dam near retract its wheels past the deck and float on the blades.. its the lowest cutting mower ive ever had. Good thing its a honda, my toro recyclers briggs engine would never handle cutting as low.

I actually have a Honda lawn mower just like yours which I believe you have a HRR216VKA. I heard you say to remove blades you use a 9/16" socket? It's actually a 14mm or millimeter. Also suggest a torque wrench for 34 torque. I believe all nuts including wheel nuts are millimeters. I have replaced my wheels with new last year because of being worn especially back drive wheels.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare

Hi Ryan, this may be a bit off topic, but have you ever used a slice/slit seeder on a renovation before? I have tried aerating, in the past and it works great but my yard took a beating from "water grass" and after killing it all, I have a lot of bare spots. We also just had rain for literally 4 days straight here in NW Illinois on the border of Illinois and Iowa. Not sure if I should let it dry out some before slice seeding. Thoughts? I haven't seen a video where you have used one yet, but maybe I missed something. Thanks for everything and all the great content as always.

Did you kill the grass on purpose, or accidentally due to over fertilizing?

Have you ever used a power rake 6-1 blade for your mower? Bought one but have yet to use it. It's to late in the season to be doing any dethatching with it. Especially here in the Canadian prairies. I am about 10 min from North Dakota border.

Thanks for the very informative video. Is it better to do the dethatching on dry soil, or damp?

If you do plan on topdressing with soil, would you want to mulch the dead stuff rather than bagging it?

Hello Ryan, I do really enjoy your videos. I had learn so much from them, thank you!
I’m preparing to do all this in my lawn but have few questions:
    - I see you level your lawn after aerating.
Don’t you think by doing that after aerating it covers all the holes and compact the ground to much for the seed?
    - I’m also planning to put down some new soil.
Would it be better doing before aerating? In order to mixed the different soil/ clay, etc..?
Thank you for all your help. I really like the opening/start of your videos, very professional and like the music.

Yes you will be covering the holes but idea is to open up the existing ground to let looser soil into those holes so the grass roots can grow into that space you created with the aerator.

Is that a normal blade setup for that mower deck?

I also never remember to write it down, no matter how much logical sense it makes to do so. Instead, I keep a dedicated wrench and nut in my lawn stuff box.

Hi Ryan. I plan on renovating my lawn using your steps this fall. I was doing some research and some say to completely remove the sod (even after killing it) and lay with top soil prior to putting in new seed. I was just wondering which way is better / provides a better success rate. I'd rather use your method because removing sod is a lot of manual labor :(

I have never removed sod in any of my renovations and no issues at all

what if you marked or taped (electrical or duct tape) the socket (is it called that?) so you remember the size for the honda blade

Would I need to scalp first if I know I am going to need and be renting a power rake or would you still have done both?

What did you use to kill your grass. I need to do my front this fall. I live in WA state hope what you used I can get here.

I'm chomping at the bit to get after my yellow lawn as well. Did you ever consider unleashing a sodcutter instead of scalping? I read your comment about tilling and would think cutting would be the best of both worlds. Can't wait to see the next vid!

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 років тому

I did consider it and maybe that was a good route to go as well but I was thinking I should make sure the tall fescue is killed off since those roots can go very deep.

Ryan Knorr Lawn Care : agreed. Im going two fold by sod cutting a glyphosated lawn. Planning going down 2.5 inches. Pray for me.

if my lawn if majority of weeds. Should I mow the weeds at the lowest height to get them out once they die?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare

Doesn't have to be the lowest. You should be able to continue to mow regularly at a normal height

How low did you set the detached to? Because I’m in the process of just hand raking all the weeds out before I used my detacher because mine is low enough to pick up the dirt
