Agreed. I hit mine with a brand that's available at any major home store a couple weeks ago and my neighbors are now looking at my lawn like I'm the lawn God of my town.
Yes, the #1 thing is to do the steps, which one you use does not have nearly as much of an impact. Fortunately there are still many good brands reasonably priced.
I like your simplistic approach 👍. One thing to consider: wait a little while during early spring before applying fert (nitrogen specifically) so the grass puts energy into the roots instead of top growth. Deep roots early on will pay dividends when summer hits. Food for thought anyway. Good video.

You could always put a slow release fertilizer into the lawn at any time, like Milorganite. I also like to add gypsum, because my lawn has clay soil, and it has made a huge difference.
Some things I've done in the Midwest. I have had better luck with preemergent (scotts triple guard) I also like to dethatch before fertilizing for better contact with the ground. Another product I've used with tenacity is T zone. Tenacity works better on crabgrass but I've had better luck with tzone on creeping charlie and clover.
Thanks for the reminders, I've been wracking my brain deciding what route to go with treatments. I hit the weeds hard last year and by the fall I had virtually no weeds. I think this year I'm going to focus on thickening the turf and feeding the grass and not stress the weeds so much.

Nice video on the simple basics ... I worked with one of the top turf guys in the golf course business 4 decades ago ... he always said the key to a good lawn is simply healthy and thick grass to keep the weeds at bay ... he always recommended aerating in spring, over seeding/patching/amending soil and just basic fertilizer ... then only spot weed control .... and I have dogs so I avoid chemicals whenever I can .... I aerated and federalized my lawn 2 weeks ago eastern PA and it's already looking good ... I bag clippings near the house/doors with the small mover to avoid dragging clippings inside, but use a sharp mulching blade on the rest with the tractor ... I have a tow behind aerator so I do it 4X a year ... a healthy lawn/soil needs oxygen and microbes to break down organic matter and loosen up the soil for deep roots ... I often make my own spray on fertilizer from beer/soda, dog urine and worm casting/compost tea (and a little dish soap) ... works like a charm and costs pennies ... I also do not cut short ... med/high retains moisture better in hot months and is less strain on the grass

Here in BC we had the worst draught in memory, unfortunately a have a large kill zone I need to bring back, I'll use your recommended fertilizer with some grass seed and see how that goes.
I’ve been spraying iron sulphate this year at 5g per square metre to kill the moss. Then lawn weed killer to get rid of the broadleaf weeds such as clover and dandelion. Then I’ll scarify and spread some 9-7-7 fertiliser and overseed any thin bits. We live in the U.K. and in previous years I haven’t gone to so much trouble, but last summer was very hot and dry and some of the weeds and moss have been around forever.
I bought my wife grandpa's weeder for Christmas (1 of many presents, of course) and she loves it.. and I love it too, now that she's pulling weeds.. 😉

With my back back blower, I can literally blow the lawn clean and stand up the grass blades the day after the snow melts. Very non-intrusive, unlike raking. Then, hit it with the Sun Joe a couple of weeks later. Next, apply a pre-emerge, if necessary. Then, Lesco starter fert for the first application. You don't want to push the lawn too hard with heavy N. Besides, you'll still be reaping benefits of your Winterizer app, if you applied one. About 2-3 weeks after clobbering it with the Sun Joe (and the ingredients above), you'll be looking at a masterpiece.

Thanks! Did my rake out today and used blower to stand up some matted grass. I’m metro Aniston, 19 degrees expected. So I’m going to give it another couple of weeks before fertilizer. Plus some over seeding, but we are waking up and already turning green from winter application.
I moved from rural NY to northern Louisiana and the weeds here are aggressive. A few types pretty much require BOTH pre- and post-emergent -- poison ivy, spurge, white clover, and nutsedge. If they get established they cannot be eradicated by hand and if widespread have to be sprayed directly as an additional application. For example I have a spray product specifically for nutsedge that has to be targeted on the weeds only and is very slow acting. Great videos as always, thanks.

True about using preemergent early. It's a waste of money. In Massachusetts if you're going to use a crabgrass preventer, Memorial Day is about the right time to do it.
Today was a good time for cleanup in Westport. Put some lime down last week, guess there a 1.5in rain storm coming Thursday that'll hopefully give it plenty of water.
Happy Spring! Another great video! The weather has been crazy here in Michigan, with spring like temps one week and snow the next. I was so surprised that my soil was already soft. I usually fertilize early spring, but I did some heavy fertilizing last fall, so waiting a little later this year. Plus, I made some major adjustments after getting soil tests last year. I want to test again to see what I actually need this year. I'm ready to do some spring cleanup, I absolutely love power raking too, but holding out until after my birthday early April to see if Honey is getting me my dream machine (Toro Timemaster with electric start...bad shoulders). I like to use the mower like you to get up all the debris, but my bagger is an old HEAVY Snapper...the self propelled went out years ago and they don't make the replacement parts anymore, so mowing with that beast is NO Fun! Looking forward to more lawn videos!

Got my time master a couple years back and it was a game changer for my yard. Got me from 1-1/2-2 hours down to less than an hour for a cut. Makes it much more enjoyable and less of a time commitment for lawn care.
Looks like your miscanthus are at the point of needing dividing which is a big pain in the butt. Tying the stalks like you did is what we used to do. The trick is to get the cut flush to the ground to avoid that ugly dead ring at the bottom.
We used to take a gas cylinder with a blow torch head attachment and actually scorch the remaining dead stubs down to soil level. It is a natural thing that grasses are not affected by fires in the wild so quickly burning off that old growth expedites new growth. Not for everyone and every situation however.

For those in the South. Tenacity will damage active Bermuda grass. Don’t use tenacity on active Bermuda grass. You can use it when Bermuda grass is completely dormant like how you can use glyphosate on completely dormant Bermuda grass.
I can concur. I followed this advice from this channel and damaged my St Augustine lawn last year and now stuck with expensive product I can't use. I do love this channel but one thing needed is for you to state you only know about cool season grass and nothing about warm season. Big fan though
Now is also a great time to be loosening and picking up small and medium sized rocks. It's quite tricky to get grass seed and grass to remain green and healthy when there are rocks nearby due to the local heat soak. Dethatching with a tow-behind is a great way to get them displaced. Just be ready to put some time into picking them up and filling/leveling the holes.

Just for who need SEBOSS hardware cloth,1/2,1/4 opening ,19 GA, Hot dip galvanized after welding, double galvanized, strong and sturdy, delicate and beautiful, suitable as gopher wire, protect lawn/garden from all kinds of gophers.
The Anderson product seems like a very expensive product for what it contains. 16-8-4 means 16 percent nitrogen, 8 percent phosphate and 4 percent potash. That means you are geting 28 percent active ingredients and the rest is by products of the refining process. The current market price for18 pounds appears to be about $45. 40 pounds of 10-10-10 at Walmart is $19 or at Home Depot for $25. These stores are selling the same amount of active ingredients for 25percent les than the Anderson. Without a soils test, you don't know exactly what you need but, my local County Extension Service recommends 10-10-10 for our soils in central Georgia. (10-13 pounds per 1000 square feet. March and October.)

I got a fun easy trick for the tall grass...🔥 I burn mine every year. Crowd pleaser kids love to help.
Unfortunately with the fence behind them I can't do it there. But I tried burning them in other parts of the yard, they torch up like you put gas on them...However it didn't end well. The roots of these big grasses are surprisingly shallow and some how the heat destroyed more than 1/2 of the roots and the next year the growth was terrible. Maybe it was a fluke but I never did it again since it nearly ruined a very old one.

Seed should go down once daytime temperatures are regularly over 60F and there is no risk of frost. Fertilization isn't related, but you can fertilize when the grass overall is turning green.
I think preemergent can help you get a poor lawn under control. I've used it for about 5 or 6 years but thinking about skipping it this year. Once your lawn is in good shape like this, the lawn itself is the preemergent. What does pop up can easily be taken care of post emergent. With the cost of everything these days, I'm looking for ways to take care of my lawn and landscape more cost effectively, and the fewer products I use, the better.
I really can’t decide after watching your video if I should just use Jonathan Green’s weed and feed or just go with their green up fertilizer without the herbicide. I don’t have a lot of weeds, just a little POA annua with some nut grass sprinkled in. Great video.
I gave up on weed and feeds a long time ago. I'm sure some area good but they never did a lot for me. You could try to go the fertilize only route and if weeds get bad spot treat.

This is what I do as well. Don’t really do any pre-emergent. Just deal with them as they come up.

THIS RIGHT HERE! I strongly agree Bryan. Let your lawn wake up naturally or fertilize with only K to support root growth, no N in early spring. No one ever talks about soil temps either, each grass type has optimal soil temps it likes to grow at and that is when I put down N. Plus microbes are only active in warmer soil temps as well (60-85). Pre-emergent is the only thing I put down before soil temps are above 55 degrees. Again fertilizing to early pushes growth up rather than waiting and letting your lawn build a stronger root structure; plus you are just throwing money down the drain if your apply things before optimal growing temps and NO natural/organic fertilizer before microbes are active.
What about Lyme. I live in Maryland in an area where it’s very acidic. So Right now I have 50% grass 50% weeds .

The only caveat I would add is that a pre-emergent like Prodiamine is useful for a newer lawn, until it gets as full and rich as yours. Especially in a full-sun lawn like mine. Of course you could just spot treat all the crab grass with tenacity but I prefer to prevent it from growing as much as possible. Once the crab grass gets going it can really take over!
I just put down my first app of Prodiamine ever this week! Went with Yard Mastery 0-0-7 and Im excited. Question - it says it has fert in it but should I do a fert app a few weeks after?
@@th3m1ke I'm planning on fertilizing in a few weeks. I used a Lesco product with 0-0-7 too. But it doesn't have any nitrogen so I'm not really counting it as much of a fertilizer.

Lesco s CARBON-PRO g made by mirimichi green .. it’s Carbon and it greatly enhances your “soil” which is the absolute key to healthy Grass!! U can but this stuff on at spindle then bag rate and as much as u may want and $$$ allows. But for $35 a bag phenomenal . This is also good for any plantsor

After the 2" cut ,application of fertilizer and waiting 3 weeks, when do you apply over seading and second dose of fertilizer?
Our soil is extremely sandy here, which makes watering and fertilizing challenging, so I do it about every 5 weeks which is frequent, but I have confirmed through soil tests is appropriate. BUT as a general guideline for good growth and look I recommend ever 6-8 weeks. You can certainly go longer and adjust if you feel it may be too much and see if color declines.
I love in Chicago, can I put down Fertilizer and over seed back to back or 1 or the other 1st ?

Question... I dethatched, aerated, and put seed down in the fall which has come in pretty good. I now have a lot of weeds, can I use the tenacity now to kill the weeds or did I miss my window in the fall? I live in NC just FYI.
You should be fine. Do a test with a small section before going big.
Next time when seeding use Scott's triple action in the blue bag.
It contains Mesotrione which is the active ingredient in Tenacity herbicide. Also it is a post and pre emergent.

A couple years ago you were using lescos dimension and a year or so ago you switched to barricade dg. So now it’s PGF complete for the first application? The green works aerator still rocks.
Yes I liked the Lesco stuff but got tired of needing to go to a store to buy it in person and they price a lot of it for pros and if you are a homeowner you don't get a discount. I don't think I ever used dimension though. In the world of pre-emergents Barricade DG stuff is top rated and I showed it as well. I had great luck with pre-emergents in my beds but didn't see much difference in the lawn, hence this video.
Any thoughts about MossEX, e.g., and the timing for spreading it? I live on that south shore blue clay and it seems to be my most prodigious crop.

love the lawn videos , bought house and renovated last year so didn't pay much attention to lawn other than removing some weeds for this year with tenacity (stuff works great). i have some grassless spots in the lawn and before i lay seed should i aerate the lawn now this early in spring with some fresh seed or just give a couple of weeks? also central mass (oxford) for some climate info.

I do have one question for you regarding fertilizer; I have a decently established lawn, and I was planning on using the Anderson all purpose fertilizer across my lawn, however I do have a few bare patches where I was planning to lay down some seed. Should I use the starter fertilizer for those specific bare spots or would the standard fertilizer work fine? Any guidance here would be great!

Just have to realize fertilizer is no substitute for prep work. Soften up the dirt around the bare spots, rake the seed in, cover it with peat moss and/or straw, and water it gently every day for 2-3 weeks. I tend to rake in just a bit of organic compost, rather than buy expensive starter fertilizer. It holds moisture better for the seed.
From RI. I put down pre emergent in early April but im not sure if it worked. I put it down when we were still getting cool weather. I actually have a bag of the PGF complete I never used. Is it a bad idea to put it down if I put down pre emergent already?
So for now, just give the lawn a low mow and a good starter Fert? I will wait to de-thatch for a couple weeks like you mentioned, but I have a few bare spots throughout the yard. When do you advise I should re-seed/repair those area? They stand out a LOT when I look down on the yard from the house and drive me crazy :-)
Yes, correct. For bare spots you have a few options. One is cutting sections of good lawn out and putting them in its place. You can use a special (but expensive tool) shown here: ua-cam.com/video/eIQQDDBAy-U/v-deo.html When I bought it was $200 and I think its way more money now. A cheaper option is to not underestimate basic seed repair. This works well, just keep them wet but this is a great time of year to put some down and rough it up a bit and you will likely get germination before its too hot: ua-cam.com/video/H9H9_x8EZnY/v-deo.html
@@SilverCymbal yeah that tool is now pushing $300 to transplant the grass, so I'm gonna try to scratch, seed, water and pray (didn't have much luck last year). One other qu: I have 3,800 sq feet of lawn to treat and the Andersons starter Fert is for 5K sq ft. Can I put the rest of the bag down in a few weeks? Might do it with a lime treatment as the lawn is acidic.
I watched your video about adding the Anderson's biochar to the grass, and have ordered some. Can I apply it at the same time as I do the first fertilizing now in Spring, or might it be better to do biochar first, wait a couple weeks and then apply fertilizer?

Do you know if tenacity will work on killing Bermuda grass in the summer that tries to take over spots in my cool season grass and is it only going to remove just the Bermuda grass? Thanks so much for any help
I have heard of folks using it for that since it will hurt or kill Bermuda grass when not dormant. If you other grass types are cool season you could give it a try to see if it works for you
Over late full and winter I kept yard clean of debree, aired it a few times aswell as put calcium out. Did any of this help?
What about core aerating?
Excellent, excellent. I would start with this video and you could aerate prior to fertilzing but at this time of year depening where in the US you are the soil may be very wet and might be tough for aeration. If it was me in New England I would do the steps in this video and aerate 3-5 weeks later. You can overseed in Spring. its a little more risky but 100% possible as shown here: ua-cam.com/video/nAVDDePLoNU/v-deo.html
