I discovered a great way of 'flattening' (not levelling) anything. I use this method for seeing how badly a wall has been plastered/taped. I just use a strong torch in a darkened room, & put the torch as close to the wall as possible, & shine it across the wall It usually looks like craters on the moon..! So, if YOU use a halogen floodlight or car headlight across a lawn at night, you will be surprised..! 👍
A) I love the 'English subtitles available' note at the start 🤣 and B) if I used sand to level my lawn I'd have a beach - which might not be the worst idea (if not for all the cats in the area) 😅
I helped make ground level prior to seeding by dragging around an extra large pallet, followed by raking, treading down, pallet levelling. We did this a few times and it's lovely and level now with lush grass. It was an allotment patch before!
I was a plasterer and roughcaster for many years, I'm from Perthshire in Scotland, and we always just used local quarry sand that was used by us and the brickies, then I moved to London and experienced disasters trying to just use building sand. It's so full of clay there, and they sell "platering sand" separately, which is just washed sand that is really coarse, l hated it, it was a real learning curve, but long story short: I'm back in Perthshire, and our local building sand is fine for lawns...
Great work guys. I love my lawn and I’ll try to get as close to your level as possible, but I let the mole continue its pleasant life. He loves my lawn too
I have that compost spreader and it works amazing, because it's for compost not sand, that top dressing of sand would never work in any compost spreader, chuck a dry bag of compost in it and they are a great tool to have, you use far less compost so it pays for itself in the long run and puts just the right amount of soil in the lawn
I considered making my own lute from a pallet, but in the end I managed to reduce the size of the pallet (why oh why did I start with the biggest and heaviest pallet?!) and dragged that around. I still got reasonable results using some fine topsoil mixed with grass seed. I could not find any USGA sand!
Made a drag mat last year. I haven't been able to cut the lawn for two weeks since I fertilised it due to the rain and I'm going to have to break the 1/3 rule tomorrow it's grown so well!
Great video guys ! Couple of questions : I assume bags of Horticultaral sand work just as well ? How long do you recommend waiting to mow after dressing the lawn ? I have a rotary mower that sucks up the grass cutting, so clearly dont want to suck up all the top dressing too when cutting . Thanks
Sure would appreciate you two, packing your bags and popping over the pond to treat my lawns with a bit of your excellent Irish expertise. I'll even provide you with nonstop cups o' tea 😉 🇨🇦
Looking well Robbie, looking fitter lately! Jason must be keeping you on your toes since joining!! Quick observation, this is all well & good for smaller lawns, but very difficult & costly to work with a 1 acre lawn. The weather has caused some serious ‘bumpage’ over the winter & it’s looking like it needs a complete re-do at a cost of about €5k! 😩
My biggest issue right now is ants. So many mounds. Non of my neighbours have them. We have quite well draining soil so I guess they like it. Any tips?
My lawn is super uneven with massive dips and mounds . Is it worth just dumping a ton of top soil on it to flatten or just dig the whole thing up and start again? I'm in London and the ground is full of clay.
Great video guys. What would you use for a lawn that is clay based? Just some topsoil? Thanks in advance? Would the drag mat be ok for that? Where would you get the mat from?
Guys, Great video, good banter. I have recently taken over a 1000 sqm lawn which has been mown historically with a mulching mower. There is significant thatch and therefore bounce. Due to weather last year I never achieved a low enough cut to scarify. We are there now, I was going to spring Tine it then cut again, then treat it with a weed and feed. I’m not sure to then use the blade scarifier….. thoughts?
Really good video guys. Cause your both a wealth of knowledge, what the hell can I use to get rid of ants, but keep my lawn as perfect as you have taught me too?
To be honest I'm not sure, I had 5 tons sent out to me and its in a store and we have topdressed the lawn a couple of times with it and there is under half left
You can only really dress out about 2 inches per time. Either method you suggest is acceptable. But the seed should be the same as the rest of your lawn if you dig, topsoil and seed as the grass may have a different shade/ texture. Just bare that in mind if it will bother you.
With the levelling lutes, what width would you recommend? Garden approx 40-50sqm. 50cm, 80cm or 100cam? Does a larger lute make it easier and give better results, or does it just make it quicker for larger lawns?
If it helps as a ball park figure 30kg/sqm is a lot and 10kg/sqm isn't much. But like premier lawns indicated your asking how long a peace of string is.
I would imagine, after a long day of law leveling, a tall glass of Guinness would be just what the doctor ordered? You might even need a second one just for medicinal purposes or aching backs? 🇨🇦😆💝👍🍻 cheers!
Hi Robbie enjoyed the video, can you tell me what the difference is between Root Zone made up of 70% USGA silica sand and 30%high quality soil heat treated to 200 degrees celcius and screened over a 3mm square mesh and Top Dressing made up of a blend of 70% specially selected sports sand and 30% graded top soil again heated and screened over a 3mm square mesh , which one is best ?, i am reseeding my lawn. Levelling the lawn is always hard work but has too be done.
Hi Robbie, thank you for replying I basically just wanted to know what is best to use Root Zone or Top Dressing when reseeding a lawn from scratch, I'm ordering my lawn seed from Boston seeds.
Just make sure that the supplier specifies that there is no recycled materials or compost in there. I've seen a lot of 70/30 thats just full of bits of twig and leaf dust. Not good for top dressing.
You don't top dress with sand! You use top dressing soil, using sand will damage the blades of the mower. You only top dress the likes of a bowling green for a better playing surface. The avarge lawn is about 50 square metres 90% of people would not have the tools or could even afford to buy the tools. If the lawn is not level it was not laid properly. Another way to level then lawn is to lift the turf and add soil to level it
You need to use sand because it doesn't rot... If you use soil or compost it will just break down and you'll be left with the same hollows you had before

Robbie great video, what would you recommend to level a clay soil lawn. 70/30?
Yes 👍
It looks like you used a fair amount of sand there, how much did you use?
To be honest I'm not sure, I had 5 tons sent out to me and its in a store and we have topdressed the lawn a couple of times with it and there is under half left
What if you have decent sized hollows? Do you fill them with topsoil and seeds? Or do multiple small passes in the year?
You can only really dress out about 2 inches per time. Either method you suggest is acceptable. But the seed should be the same as the rest of your lawn if you dig, topsoil and seed as the grass may have a different shade/ texture. Just bare that in mind if it will bother you.

The smaller lute in this test just doesn't have enough weight to it. I wouldn't recommend a mat either for a small lawn
Any tips on lowering the complete lawn? I tried a pretty aggressive scarify, seems to work a bit. But I want the lawn about 6-8 cm lower.
It will depend on the type of grass, the height it is now, how often you cut it, 6-8cm is a lot
So the drag mat is an alternative to the lute or additional?
You can use either, if your lawn is bigger than 100m it will be easier all day long
@@Premier_lawns_official funnily enough I just ordered a lute today… £160 I could have saved?!🤣
@@edwardhackett-jones8126 the green lute we used in this video, its a couple of times its been used and it seems pretty good
