It shows a lack of creativity on the writers’ behalf. When creating drama and suspense in a relationship between two characters, cheating is not the only option you have. Seriously, they had almost every other relationship in that show go through cheating for drama. Angela with Andy, Dwight, the Senator. Stanley with Teri and his other woman. The Senator with Angela and Oscar.
I’m sure there’s more. But this highlights the point I’m making with how many times they had affair happen to create drama in relationships.
Them trying to recycle the same drama in the main relationship in the show is lazy, and doesn’t make sense when you take a look at the characters. Jim’s character was heavily defined by his love for Pam. Having him cheat goes against everything he was written to be. It’s baffling to me that the producers were so determined to do it…that the only thing that stopped them was when viewership and ratings were brought into the conversation. They didn’t care about what made sense for the story and characters. They didn’t care about writing off one of the central focuses of the show. Just the ratings and viewership…🤦🏻‍♂️ If your main actor who had been involved for years tells you something is or isn’t a good idea, you should probably listen to them. They’ve been involved long enough to know what they’re talking about.

His character is an exaggeration of the lazy crony/nepo office worker who fails upward… except without the nepo/crony stigma, and without the failure because of contrived writing where skill/work don’t factor into success on any project, except if it’s someone else’s. This made him even more detestable.

This reminds me of Friends. Matthew Perry apparently protested greatly when writers originally wanted to make his character Chandler Bing cheat on Monica I think with some flight attendant. He refused to do this believing that it would be horrible for the narrative and makes no sense considering his character has essentially trauma from his parents divorce who broke up because his dad had an affair. Of course the dad was gay, but he still cheated and he believed with that upbringing Chandler would never ever cheat on someone he loved.
