Excellent video! The the NASCAR H.O.F. should most definitely have something to honor the independent teams. Especially now since NASCAR has basically screwed over the independent guys with the charter system.
Great video. DK is exactly right, the independents we're a very important group of men. NASCAR should recognize those guys who did so much with so little. But NASCAR always seems to forget their roots. It's really sad that NASCAR only remembers the big stars, and not the "other" stars that helped make the sport what it WAS. Personally, NASCAR's greatest era's all ended with the passing of the working man's hero DALE EARNHARDT.
"I mighta said that, but, it was hooked up!" 😂 LMAO 🤣😂 There's never going to be drivers as genuine as ol' DK here! What an awesome dude! 😎 Thank you guys for sharing and, of course, GOD BLESS 🙏❤️✌️
This is fantastic, I've been watching every part of it I can find, his stories are epic. One of the other UA-cam channels that has been on a recent nascar history kick is Stapleton42, I've been surprised by some of the places they have been.
This guy developed a product that went in Car Radiators that sealed up leaks as an Emergency fix. He made a fortune selling it in the West . He developed and sold it in Las Vegas, Reno and other areas like that.
I don't often laugh out loud watching videos but I did for this one. Such a treat listening to D.K. What a delight to be reminded of the old days. I remember him vaguely and I feel very sad that I did not honor the independents like they deserved at the time. I do now and enjoy learning of the challenges that had to be overcome by men and teams that wanted to race so darned bad they found ways to overcome very daunting limitations. Thanks for the memories. His story is awesome.
I don't recall DK, but Smokey came to our Race Shop twice. He was just as " flamboyant " as the story goes, plus 10. Great interview, thanks for sharing. It was NEVER cheating with these guys, it was the INTERPRETATION of the rules. God bless. T.S. RACING
This dood was 29 years old in the late 70s? Damn he looks like he's 50 something to me. Not to mention this is one of the coolest people I've ever heard talk. Well done bud!
Great interview, takes us back to the good Ole days, totally different now. Saw my first race at Riverside 1976. Would like to hear more stuff like that!
This interview demonstrates what I have always said, which is there's a difference between educated and smart. D. K. was smart, which you had to be in those days to survive.
People like this are a treasure to Motorsport history. The good the bad and the ugly, they did what they had to sometimes win but as he explained just to get in the show and then let Lady Luck in a lot of cases ride along side.NASCAR would be better for it if they could go to all the drivers of the golden era who are still with us and document it before it’s lost forever
This was priceless!!! Thank you both, DK and the guys at The Scene Vault. Subscribed !!! Without channels like this, the best days of nascar racing would be forever forgotten, along with the great men who were the drivers, crew chiefs, engine builders & car/chassis fabbers. Keep up the great work!!!
These videos are so fascinating. I'm so glad that these stories are being documented. I could see him throwin' punches in the background of Stroker Ace LOL
We used bore cylinders 5 and 6 to 60thousants and up the compression ratio for those cylinders to give us a larger displacement engine. If inspected they usually checked the front cylinders. Lol
I was lucky as a 16 year old getting to meet DK at Phx Intl Raceway back when my Dad crewed for the Uno car and the Alison's Grand National ride. Dad worked with Earl Selburg in Tucson at Perfection Autocraft, and Earls son Troy Selburg and I used to build plastic models together with soldering irons adding cages and beefing them up to smash them into each other and see who's was the toughest. Troy went on to become a successful Nascar touring team crew/car chief and co-owner of a Busch car and a Cup car into the mid late nineties if I remember correctly. As for myself, back in 1994 had more top 2 finishes than any other division in the Nascar Sunbelt series, Won the best appearing car of the year, won the track championship, my girlfriend became my wife and then at the Awards Banquet she was voted in by her peers and track officials as The Nascar Golden Wrench award winner. The year after, her health declined terribly bad. For 10 years, Drs couldn't figure out what it was. INSURANCE wasn't covering DNA tests that were getting better at identifying disease and so we saved for that DNA test and finally it showed what the issue was.... the test revealed she had all the strands/markers of all the Lyme disease DNA. No Drs in our state were knowledgeable and willing to tteat for it so we drove to Nevada every 6 weeks where a Dr from Connecticut flew in to treat patients on the Western side of the country because he knew the need. 5 years later she suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage (brain aneurysm) 4 years later diagnosed with stage 4 adenocarcinoma (lung cancer) 6 years now and She's laying here right next to me and AS BEAUTIFUL AND SWEET AS EVER! GOD IS SO GOOD!!! I am thankful for every minute the Good Lord blesses us together with!! Imagine, all those battles ontop of life's everyday hardships....and to OVERCOME ALL THAT COMES AGAINST US!!! GOD IS GOOD!! GOD IS SO GOOD!!! AMEN!!! GOD BLESS Y'ALL ! ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES ARE THE ONES AHEAD OF US!!!
I love the old nascar. I’ve heard DK announced many times in a starting lineup never knew a thing about him I’d buy his book for sure. Thanks DK great insight to the best era of Nascar
Who woulda thought that Skeet Ulrich was his son! Just when you thought he couldn't have been any more awesome! DK could literally be the new "World's most fascinating man!" Burt Reynolds didn't have nothing on ol' DK here!😎
My dad was a successful car dealer when he met one of the independent NASCAR owner/drivers at a friend's cookout in the mid 1980s. This was the time when many of those guys were known simply as "Start 'N Park" guys. So dad asked the guy why he did it if he couldn't really compete. Dad said he wasn't trying to be a d*ck, he was legit curious and the guy was perfectly cool with it. The conversation went like this... Guy: Do you like what you do for a living? Dad: Yeah, I like it. Guy: Are you good at it? Dad: I like to think I am. Guy: And did you make two and a half *million* dollars last year doing it? Dad: ;/
The number of guys that he had drive for him, and the impact some of those guys had on the sport, including a certain man known as The King and his former brother in law Ricky Rudd. He also played an important role in his personal life, serving as the only real father figure to actor Skeet Ulrich.
A long time ago my parents moved to San Bernardino California. One of my father's coworkers ran a claimer stock car at the Orange Show Fairgrounds. It was dirt back then and we saw a lot of races and a lot of classes run there. The track got paved the next year and the car count went up. I remember one driver had a pristine black stock car that was one of the fastest down the straights. But he seemed rather hesitant to have any kind of contact. He never scraped the walls and when someone dove inside he would back off. I asked my father why he didn't do a little rubbing. He said it was his car and he would have to pay to fix it. Then the next year he was not there I mentioned this to may father and he said it was in the newspaper that he moved to the South and was going to run NASCAR. I was dumfounded, I told my father "It's obvious he is a good mechanic, but we will never hear anything about the amazing driving skills of D.K. Ulrich!"
I've never really been into NASCAR but this thumbnail/title caught my eye and this was very interesting. I did not expect this video to hold my interest to the end but I couldn't click away. I think I would have been a NASCAR fan if I'd been born earlier, it was probably still interesting when I was a kid but I had no one to really guide me into it. One more thing independent teams did which I think we can all appreciate is that it would surely have made the dream of being a NASCAR driver seem attainable which I think is part of what the original appeal of NASCAR racing was.
I got to see Hoosier tires turned into Mcreary tires. Certain tracks here in the South that would not allow Hoosier tires. My buddies aquired a reverse mold that said Mcreary. At a certain track my driver/owner friend looked me and said " Here we go, there's the man looking at tires" Passed with flying colors. Didn't win the race, but finished in top three. He did win the cheat. 🇺🇲🍺
Absolutely amazing story. It was all the independents, or little guys that really made the racing good. I agree, there should be a spot in the Hall of Fame for the independents, without them NASCAR would never have gotten off the ground, it would have been too boring!!
What I'd like to ask him is what was it about the tires being on the 'wrong' side that made the car faster. Richard Petty got caught with left side tires on the right (or visa versa) once. I think it was the same race he had the over-sized engine in. He was docked points but got to keep the victory.
Got the chance to have dinner a couple times with DK down on crooked at Gibsons Restaurant and man know his stuff has good taste in whiskey to with his Johnny Walker
Sounds like a salt of the earth kind of guy, like to hear more of his stories. Leaving the 80s NASCAR just wasn’t the same and I find it harder and harder to watch.
Racer complaining to race official…”That guy is cheating”. Race official to racer…”How do you know that?” Racer…”Because I’m cheating and he’s beating me!”….
These interviews are so interesting! Nascar is losing out when the characters are gone.. They needed to be there! Charter system sucks for the fans too ..
I find Nascar boring as all hell compared to racing on non round/oval tracks but watching the videos where these people are talking about how they have cheated or got around the rules is brilliant.
Ever notice that there is a theme from those who made NASCAR but weren't the top tier drivers and owners? That theme is that, NASCAR and the France Family suck and have no appreciation for those who truly made sport what it was. Perhaps that's why the sport isn't worth watching today and is dying.
how can you say "this pod is not associated with Scene brand" . yet have Scene employees doing interviews...... and then uploading it to the Scene channel???
We’re not associated with American City Business Journals, the company that still owns the Scene brand and content. Steve and I are no longer Scene employees, and the channel belongs to us, not ACBJ. The company has no controlling/financial interest in anything we do.
I can't be the only one who found DK totally fascinating..can I?
Every word he uttered took me back to the Glory Days of Nascar.
"I mighta said that, but it was hooked up." I just love this so much! And reminiscing about the old days, since imo today's NASCAR is so terrible.
Just think of all the people that got an opportunity to race in one of DK's cars. His stories are priceless.
I remember Sterling Marlin driving D.K’. s car early in his Cup career.
Man , this was enjoyable! Thank you so much for this interview!
Excellent video! The the NASCAR H.O.F. should most definitely have something to honor the independent teams. Especially now since NASCAR has basically screwed over the independent guys with the charter system.

They recognized James Hylton enough to change the points system.
NASCARS greatest era was when the cars raced could be bought at dealerships.
@@robertthurman9866 that and him and his son were killed in a traffic accident.
D K is correct about the independents helping to fill the field. They were a vital part of the program.
"I mighta said that, but, it was hooked up!" 😂 LMAO 🤣😂 There's never going to be drivers as genuine as ol' DK here! What an awesome dude! 😎 Thank you guys for sharing and, of course, GOD BLESS 🙏❤️✌️
These interviews are treasures… lots of stories got away before anyone put them to paper or film
What a history lesson , love all you do.
I wish more Old timers would talk more about ( Cheating) back in the early days. I would definitely pay attention to those videos or podcasts.
This is fantastic, I've been watching every part of it I can find, his stories are epic.

It ain't cheating, it's just racing! I love it.
Awesome interview... this man does the best he can when he can and does unto others. He's got a lot of character...to hell with Bill France.
These videos are so fascinating. I'm so glad that these stories are being documented. I could see him throwin' punches in the background of Stroker Ace LOL

What a character. Thanks for your brutal honesty. Great interview.

Super interesting interview. So many good stories Well done 👏

He had Elvis Presley drive for him? Wow.
Thank you, thank you very much!
DK is a Racers Racer... Enjoyed these stories 🏁
A long time ago my parents moved to San Bernardino California. One of my father's coworkers ran a claimer stock car at the Orange Show Fairgrounds. This was amazing!
I cant get enough D.K. . I would love to hear him give us the run down on that Kodak sponsorship
What I'd like to ask him is what was it about the tires being on the 'wrong' side that made the car faster.
Richard Petty got caught with left side tires on the right (or visa versa) once. I think it was the same race he had the over-sized engine in. He was docked points but got to keep the victory.
Yes sir sounds like honest racing to me LOL thanks for sharing🦅🇺🇸🏁😎
Got the chance to have dinner a couple times with DK down on crooked at Gibsons Restaurant and man know his stuff has good taste in whiskey to with his Johnny Walker
Sounds like a salt of the earth kind of guy, like to hear more of his stories. Leaving the 80s NASCAR just wasn’t the same and I find it harder and harder to watch.
today half the tech inspectors would be totally oblivious to a nice set of t*ts
Dude is really interesting. I saw him in person at Dover 86 and 87.
Four cars qualify for the Daytona 500 with the same engine WOW!
The "All day unit" priceless ha ha
I killed two guys once, but I only did it to get in the race 🤣🤣
I haven't watched a Nascar race since Dale died.
Love it ✌️😎🏁
DK Is SOOOO MUCH Fun to listen to 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Dont know who DK is but I like him and his memories
How did modifying the tires make him faster we’re they lighter or beveled?
Probably a softer rubber compound so it gave him more grip
Damn l didn't know that DK was still around and I think Connie Saylor drove one of his vehicles for a few races.
Interesting guy....love it..
Gazaway told my buddy who was the car owners son in 1970 at Daytona “don’t come back in the garage until you get a haircut”.
Was that race 1971 Sandlapper 200?
Racer complaining to race official…”That guy is cheating”. Race official to racer…”How do you know that?” Racer…”Because I’m cheating and he’s beating me!”….
Do you think you could get Bill Davis on the show?
He’s exactly the kind of goofy character I thought he would be from the stories I had heard about him…
These interviews are so interesting! Nascar is losing out when the characters are gone.. They needed to be there! Charter system sucks for the fans too ..
Awesome!!! 😎
Back in DK's day, you did ANYTHING to make the race, because so many guys were trying.
What a character....racing is better for guys like D.K., Larry Frank, G.C. Spencer, James Hylton, etc.
I think I've figured out what is missing from todays nascar.
Smokey would be proud...
I know nothing about nascar, I came from a Tim pool video about ww3.....
Great!
These are the guys I love and would like to meet.
I find Nascar boring as all hell compared to racing on non round/oval tracks but watching the videos where these people are talking about how they have cheated or got around the rules is brilliant.
Shorty edwards was his name.
The ultimate OUTLAW
So good. And gone. This will never be in nascar anymore. Not until a major reset.
Ever notice that there is a theme from those who made NASCAR but weren't the top tier drivers and owners?
That theme is that, NASCAR and the France Family suck and have no appreciation for those who truly made sport what it was.
Perhaps that's why the sport isn't worth watching today and is dying.
Red Skelton's grandson?
If your not cheating your not racing
I would watch nascar back in the early years. But not nowadays.
He looks just like Otis Campbell!
What a bad ass.
Back when Nascar was good!
wow!!.....whatever happened to NasCar??
Nascar was so good....
are the audio levels good? no, no they are not..
That’s when it was racing now it’s just like WWE WRESTLING
Dawgs gotta eat
how can you say "this pod is not associated with Scene brand"
.

Oh good God hahahaha
Imagine buying a car from this crook.
@@clarenceghammjr1326 hahahaha peddo sock account.
Would be probably the best deal you could get for a race ready car with a all day unit in it❤
