@@monicacall7532 Yup. The wee hours of a dark and very lonely night in 1971, feeling very scared, and that song came on. I fell in love with it and his voice instantly. His songs have seen me through some very tough times, as well as some very good times. He has no equal, as far as I am concerned.

It's interesting to listen to Gordon's early interviews and then later ones like this. He's FAR more comfortable in his later interviews. Very relaxed. Earlier interviews he could be a bit on edge. I can't add anything to what so many others have said other than I loved the man's work and seemed to be a good person, albeit a bit of a wild man in his earlier days. Thanks Gord.

When Stroumboulopoulos asked about Lightfoot's daughter asking him to change a lyric, I think he might have been thinking about "If You Could Read My Mind", since it (allegedly) was inspired by Lightfoot's divorce from his first wife. She supposedly asked him to change ""I'm just trying to understand the feelings that you lack" to "feelings that WE lack", since it was less accusatory toward her mother.

I'll be forever grateful for Jr. high & college friend Chuck Thomas (later to be my best man) for introducing me to Gord's music in 1971 w/ the "Summer Side of Life." We pretty much wore the cassette tape out. I introduced him to the less-commercially-known album tracks of "Sunflower" (and a few months later, "Surf's Up,") from Brian Wilson & the Beach Boys. In both cases, each of us had opened up to ourselves previously-unknown vistas of musical wonder, harmony, & poignant lyrics.

Great interview. Strombo- think seriously and give long thoughts and noodling on the "cover" word. It's demeaning and widely used incorrectly. It's been created and expanded upon by the commercial marketplace. Don Mclean wrote a very on target piece about it. Symphony conductors or major singing artists do not announce every song not written by themselves as a "cover". It has merit on its own to just sing a song "written by" or my version or arrangement etc. If you should ever think seriously on it and cease using it, pass the idea forward

I've had it on my wall ever since and when people come over everybody says cool guitar and I tell them the story. Stompin Tom's love for his fans was truly genuine.
