    The 4090 laptop GPU uses the same AD103 die as the 4080 desktop GPU, see how those compare here next: ua-cam.com/video/z2531DDo55w/v-deo.html
    Update: At 4:49 I show that this laptop has 8 lanes of PCIe 4 for the GPU, which is correct, however not all 4090 laptops are like this. It seems to only be 8 lanes if the laptop also has an M.2 slot that supports Gen 5, like this GT77 laptop from MSI. I have another 4090 laptop here that uses 16 lanes and hits 24gb/s in the test just like the desktop. Difficult to say how much difference this makes though, I wouldn't expect too much, not enough to affect the conclusion of this comparison at least.

    Nvidia rebranding the 4080 laptop as a 4090 to trick people into thinking that they're getting the fastest GPU available so laptop manufacturers can charge sky high price for their products.. classic.

      Sad thing is people are falling for it like sheep lol. Anyone that knows anything about gaming laptops and their architecture knows the 4090M should be the 4080M, no less they should always put "M" on their labelings, they just do this to further confuse their customers into thinking they are getting a desktop type 4090 in a 4090M laptop. AMD thankfully is more transparent, but I really can't wait until Intel breaks the market of GPU's and causes the competition to change their tactics. I went full AMD, and I don't plan on supporting NVIDIA for quite some time, especially after their capitalization on market manipulation and using miners for that. 40 series cards they went full price fixing in terms of 40 series involvement and 30 series remaining stock.

      @@crearg8259 I think the biggest thing is the naming. This is more relatable to the 4080 desktop type, so this should have been labeled as the 4080M. The current 4080M they have would probably be more relatable to the 4070ti or 4070 desktop, which should have been named 4070M. They did this to net higher due to the names alone, and confuse the consumer yet again. It's quite deceptive, as normal consumers will see "4090" and think oh cool that is like the 4090 desktop. People should be skipping NVIDIA this year to show consumer power against their market manipulation, yet it won't occur.

      @onlytheneeded412 Рік тому +12

      @@crearg8259 that is another point as well that you bring up, which is a good point and kind of lines up with what I meant, that their naming schemes if they are trying to line it up to desktop should be lined up closer to their desktop counterparts if that is their goal. Like the 3080M should have been the 3070M. However, this 40 gen series chips they are able to actually name them according to what they were doing, so the 4090M should have been named the 4080M as that created gap allows them to actually name them more closely to their desktop counterparts, yet they decided to instill that gap creation continuance to yet again confuse regular consumers. The consumers like us though see through the issues presented, while regular consumers will not.

    It was actually the 900-series that last used the -M notation, because they were trying to highlight the fact that the newer laptop dGPUs in the 10-series had closer parity with the desktop specs (minus wattage).
    That said, if they're going to deviate this hard, you're absolutely right. They should either include the -M, or name them more aptly for the specs they're meeting. This is either a 4090M or it's a low power 4080, but it's definitely no 4090.

    There is a very big problem with the naming conventions of these cards as you point out. I remember back when I primarily used a laptop for gaming, every card ended with the 'M' to indicate it was the mobile counterpart of a GPU and we knew they weren't the same as the desktop version.
    Several years later, here I am looking to move back to a laptop (without being clued up on them for years) thinking that they were squeezing actual 3080's etc into laptop now with pretty relative performance to the desktop counterpart. Oooh how I was wrong.

But of course it would have been better to be called 4090M 4080M etc, maybe even include TDP in the name.

    • @Frozoken
      @Frozoken 5 місяців тому

      Ik it's late but ofc it wouldn't keep up because it's literally the exact same cores, mem bus width and cache as the desktop 4080 except at a lower power limit with gddr6 instead of 6x which btw they can interchange whenever they want like they did with the 3060ti just putting Gddr6x chips on the die instead of gddr6 a couple years later.
      Tldr: It is quite literally a gddr6 4080 desktop limited to 175w instead of 320w so ofc it'll perform worse than even that

      And that's why price/performance is so stagnant this gen in laptop. They named and priced everything a tier above when compared to the last gen lineup.

    Hey Jarrod I have A few recommendations for when you do a comparison of differnt CPUs in games for example since you compare 11th gen vs Ryzen 5000 series you seem to always test games that are more demanding on the GPU rather than the CPU eg Cyberpunk 2077 or Control , or if there are some CPU intensive games they ussualy always hit 300+ fps any ways I think for most of the users It doesn't even matter that much if the game can already hit 250+ fps in CS go , sure some competitive players still might might want to see that but the experience is mostly gonna be the same unless they have like 360hz monitors...
    So my Personal Recommendation is when you Compare Intel 13th gen vs Ryzen 7000 series in games Use the Cpu intensive games with setting in that affect the CPU the most...
    For Example Raytracing in games Nowdays seems to be getting A lot CPU intensive
    So You shold test The recent Games that have Raytracing
    1: Spiderman Remastered (With RAYTRACING)
    2 Hogwarts Legacy (With RAYTRACING)
    ETC....
    And if you think that is a lot of work load I think you should just stop testing the lower settings of the (Story Driven Games i.e Single Player games) from the benchmarks of the higer-end Laptops
    Like Realisticly No one is goona want to Buy An RTX 4060 laptop or higher to Play on Low or Medium setting on (Single player games)
    So for single player games Just test the Following settings from Now on...
    1 : High
    2 : Very High or Ultra (if Available)
    3 : Raytracing Medium
    4 : Raytracing Ultra
    Granted you will have to test Dlss3 or FSR3 when that becomes available and you have two resolutions to test 😬
    So,
    For Upscaling use the following setting
    5: Very high or Ultra (if Available) + Dlss2 /or Fsr2 (Quality)
    6: Raytracing Ultra + Dlss2 /or Fsr2 (Quality)
    7: Raytracing Ultra + Dlss2 /or Fsr2 (Quality) + Dlss3 /or Fsr3
    Please Consider testing according to them as they might be more helpful for a lot of people By tehe way Love your Videos Man ❤

      @TabalugaDragon Рік тому

      they won't be close in performance, because they will still use lower end chips than on desktops. So even if by some miracle you brought them to the same wattage as on desktops they'd still perform worse, because Nvidia are too greedy.

    I used to buy these pc magazines and remember reading about laptops running the original Far Cry at med. settings at a decent resolution. It was considered a miracle. It still amazes me the power notebooks have these days. And still we are complaining... I grew up with a Dell Optiplex 166mhz Pentium, 32mb RAM and a S3 4mb GPU, we are truly spoiled these days.

    4090 is basically a 3090 ti desktop which is only 1 year old now still insane! it can’t keep with 4090 desktop it’s just too much power maybe one day if they can somehow make a 4090 desktop power more efficient it could compete with the next series still if u limit a 4090 desktop to the same watts the 4090 laptop beats the 4090 desktop so still very impressive for power efficiency!

      They will keep improving but there will always will be a gap. It's less about tech than physics lol. A laptop gpu can't keep as cool coz there's not enough space. I suppose there could be material/liquid cooling solutions for it but in the end there's only so much you can do.

    • @theo5675
      @theo5675 Рік тому +2

      @Gman 749 I agree u can't beat physics so not sure why people are complaining lol
      it'll get somewhat better for sure with still a gap between but I mean how can people not appreciate that its only about 1 year gap from the most powerful desktop GPU!! That's an amazing leap in tech!

      @Anthony Lee the biggest complaint is the pricing but reviewers seems to be fixated on the fully specced out msi Titan 4090 which is the most expensive one on the market. an Asus Rog Scar 4090 is in the 3500-3800 range which is still a hell of alot but considering the performance you're getting in a laptop it's somewhat understandable.

    Could you please do a comparison of an Alienware m18 with the RTX 4090 to their top end Precision Workstation laptop? The would be for the primary purpose of running SolidWorks? My theory is that the gaming laptops have exceeded the performance of the "Workstation" engineering laptops and have finally nullified the difference of the OpenGL drivers that are customized for CAD softwares. Thanks

    With the Pascal 1050ti - it was the first identical full fat gpu on both laptops & desktops & the laptop version was even faster thanks to the foundry refresh. Oh how far things have strayed now! 😮

    1:07 umm no, 1000 series didn't have "m" in the name because mobile GPUs in that generation has essentially the same specs and nearly the same performance as the desktop ones.

    Nvidia should just have just called the 4090 laptop the 4080M considering it has the actual 4080 desktop chip in it. 4090 laptop just isn't even in the same league as the desktop despite both having the same name and eye wateringly high prices.

    I have gone back and forth between the rtx 4090 benchmarks and 4080 benchmarks (from jarrod's) and from 10 random games, @ 1440p, the 4090 seems to be 18.86% ahead of the 4080 at avg fps. (no frame gen benchmarks were used)
    i didn't feel like keeping track of the game titles, but here are the numbers i got. top row is 4090 bottom row is 4080. (avg fps/0.1% low) i rounded up or down based upon .5% or higher - one game did have the 4080 performing better, i didn't include that in the average @1440p, as it seemed like it was an outlier
