  • Howdy, y'all! After holding off on stacking any bales through our heavy monsoon rain season this year, it's finally time to get these walls up. Our roof trusses are scheduled to come in a few weeks, and we've got great weather right now, so here goes! In this video, we're putting up our first section of straw bale wall. I apologize for not capturing every step of the way, but we were trying to figure out some of the details as we went. We'll definitely be capturing more of the details in future videos, so stay tuned. In this "hybrid" method of straw bale building, the weight of the roof will be supported both by the straw bales and each of the floor to ceiling bucks that frame the doors and windows. As such, each section between two window/door bucks forms a complete straw bale wall structure from bottom (sill plate) to top (box beam). A modular box beam will be assembled across the top of the entire wall length over both the bucks and the bales before the roof assembly will be place on top. Also, a short stud framed wall will be placed on top of the south wall to create the roof slope before the trusses are installed.
    Hope you can check back to see our progress along the way!

      So far, just a single drainage pipe underground from the bathroom area to the septic.

    Brian and Pam appreciated this video as not doing Straw bale here it was good to get familiar with terminology like door bucks and vampire stakes etc. Great explanation as to how those things work! I like your idea of rigid foam as a gap filler at the top of your walls. As you know I used it as a sandwich making 4 " insulation for the underside/floor of my cabin. All the best guys!

      There are so many different ways to solve problems that it can be tough to make a choice sometimes. Although I think we could have made the foam work, I believe we've come up with a straw solution now! Stay safe out there. We'll have to get together again soon. Been a little while.

    Why not just fill the gap between the bails and the top plate with Adobe?

      We definitely thought about making some bricks to fill the gaps. Talking through a few different possibilities. Stay tuned to see what we come up with!

    Great filming and explaining! Didn't think it was possible to "out OCD" Bill from Upside, but this was close : ) All kidding aside, this is such a great, environmentally friendly build and so well thought out. Foam "cheese slice" is great solution!

    • @MidlifePrices
      @MidlifePrices  2 роки тому

      Yeah, I go a little overboard sometimes 😃. Can't help it. I think the foam was an interesting solution that I think we could have made work, but we've talked a little more about it, and I think we have a straw solution that we like now. Stay tuned for the next video!

    On the corners, you could use rebar through all the bails.
    To make up for the height of the french door, you could go from the bottom with the foam. That also gives you protection from moisture creeping up.

    • @MidlifePrices
      @MidlifePrices  2 роки тому

      We were leaning toward starting with foam from the bottom, but we've come up with another solution that we'll describe and use in the next video. I think it will solve the problem. Stay tuned! We will be using rebar "staples" in the corners to tie the bales together at the corners.

    I think you told me on one of the live streams, but how do you keep the walls from racking? Do you tie the corner bales somehow? Exciting!

    • @MidlifePrices
      @MidlifePrices  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, we will be using rebar "staples" to tie the bales together at the corners. I'm also thinking of adding some simple 2x4 support structures at each of the corners, similar to what makes up the edge of each of the window/door bucks. Trying to avoid the bale-only sections from "sagging" a little lower than the sections that have the additional buck support. Also leaning toward a few of these extra supports along the west wall, which has no windows or doors. Make sense?

    good video ty for good expiation of what is happening at this point, , please in some compacity find a way for Pan to help you, if pam feeds you all bails grunt work, she will find a way, crying as she works lol this will increase the speed of the build and free you to assemble the house, i know it is hard to work by yourself, thumbs up in support of your channel Tom

    • @MidlifePrices

      I hear you, Tom, but right now I think how Pam can be the most help to me is to document. First, it's just too hard to think about and pull off while doing all the building tasks, but it also (I hope!) makes the footage a lot more fun. I'm trying to get away from too much of me just dryly describing the process I'm going through. Pam's interaction spices it up a lot, I think. Hopefully you guys will agree! Thanks for watching and supporting.

    We heard a 'rheumatroid' that you all have started building. 😃 About compression and bale height: Typically, windows and doors have the same header height, unless it is a specialty window placement, or something. Have you considered making the walls one bale higher than the door headers? That way, you will have a little bit of wall above the door and its cheaper than buying rigid foam. We hope Pam can get into this and enjoy this process! This is the fun part! Put the camera on a tripod and go for it! 😃

    • @MidlifePrices
      @MidlifePrices  2 роки тому +1

      We've discussed a bunch of different solutions. Having a full bale over all the windows and doors would require taller bucks, so not sure we can do that. Think we may have solved the wall height problem while still using bales the whole way (stay tuned for next video!). Still thinking of ways to fill the gaps above and below windows and doors. Would love to find a way to make bales work there, but not sure. Thanks for watching!
