  • Taiwan is preparing for its presidential election, and there is a lot at stake at the ballot box.
China has warned voters in Taiwan to make the right choice when voters elect a new president.
A win for William Lai, the leading and ruling party candidate, would - according to Beijing - endanger the island's relationship with China.
Jeff Semple looks at how the vote could affect Taiwan's future and the fears of a possible military conflict.

Regardless of how many people support "unification," the ROC lost its de jure sovereignty after the UN vote on Oct 25th 1971. Before that, the ROC was a de jure country who had legal authority of all of China (including the mainland and Formosa/PKM). After the UN 2758 vote on Oct 25th 1971 (thanks to Kissinger who screwed the ROC), the ROC's de jure status was transferred to the PRC. One China status has never changed and until the ROC/Taiwan declares independence, the ROC will also be part of One China whether you like/admit it or not.

@@jeffchun What you need to understand is, for the PRC, it doesn't matter what happens on this Saturday. As far as the PRC is concerned, the ROC, or TAIWAN, or whatever you want to call it, is a "separatist region" like Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts of Ukraine. It is because the US gave the legal ruling authority of One China from the ROC away to the PRC on July 10th 1971 whether you admit/like it or not. Until the ROC, Taiwan, Free China, Formosa, or whatever you want to call this place declares independence, it is still under the One China umbrella as per both One China Policy and One China Principle.
Most people in Taiwan simply don't have a clue about the whole PRC/US issue. Essentially, the PRC wants the US to fulfill the promise Kissinger made in 1971, while the US won't allow it because now the US sees the PLA as its #1 national security threat. What you don't understand is the objective for the US has changed over time. The PLA was no match for the US military decades ago during the unipolar world, that's why the US was not concerned about the rise of the PRC. Instead, it welcomed the rise of the PRC as the US benefited from cheap labour. This is also why the US has always snubbed the sovereignty of the ROC since 1971. In 2023, it is a very different situation. There is even a term for it called the "Thucydides Trap." In order for the US to maintain military primacy and world dominance, the US has to do something before the PLA catches up or even surpass US military capabilities. That is why the US is now aggressively supporting the ROC's "self-determination." Why? The US wants to use countries in the first island chain as cannon fodders to defend US national security interests, while they continue to use the DPP to provoke the PRC. The more Taiwanese doesn't understand the real problem, the closer the ROC will be on a path to war.

Be mindful that in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan and war ensues, the Taiwanese people's resentment towards China will significantly escalate. The loss of fathers, sons, brothers, and friends on the frontline defending Taiwan's democracy will deepen their aversion and anger towards China. Taiwan, having cherished freedom through democracy, will staunchly resist falling under the rule of an autocratic communist government dictatorship. Unless China addresses this dispute by acknowledging the respect due for Taiwan, the war is likely to be protracted with unimaginable casualties.

Taiwan, represented by KMT (Kuomintang) under Chiang Kai Shek committed war atrocities during China's Civil War against CPC.
Over several years after the 1927 Shanghai massacre, the Kuomintang killed between 300,000 and one million people, primarily peasants, in anti-communist campaigns as part of the White Terror.[126][127] During the White Terror, the Nationalists specifically targeted women with short hair who had not been subjected to foot binding, on the presumption that such "non-traditional" women were radicals.[127] Nationalist forces cut off their breasts, shaved their heads, and displayed their mutilated bodies to intimidate the populace.[127]
Torture, rape, and collective punishment were common Nationalist practices during its counter-insurgency campaigns.[104]: 91-92  The Nationalists uprooted and moved entire communities in an effort to more easily monitor Communist activities.[104]: 92

A few years ago the Kuomintang jumped in bed with Reality and changed its tune about invading mainland China and overthrowing the PRC. That is when the US got to work creating pro-American political parties and bankrolling alternative Taiwan leaders. Funny that the US love of democracy and freedom does not extend to the neighbouring island of Okinawa, which was never liberated from Japanese occupation after World War 2. (Although in political terms the country of Japan is still occupied by the USA with no timeline for its independence. Japan has not yet signed a peace treaty with Russia or the USSR.)

A large part of China was ceded. China also had to give up Taiwan to Japan and a lot of money in exchange for “peace”. UK also built a park in Shanghai and erected a plaque at the entrance “ Chinese and dogs are not allowed”. After the second world wars, during which almost 10 percent of Chinese killed by Japanese, U.N. passed a Resolution 2758 recognizing that “there is only one China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China territory”. 99 percent of U.N. members including G20 only recognize China and not Taiwan. 1. Almost 20 years ago, Quebec wanted to separate from Canada. Most Canadians were very upset. The Canadain government did every thing it could to prevent it.
    2. It is true that Taiwanese votes can vote. However, the person they elected must obey the U.S. government. All candidates must went to the U.S. to be interviewed prior to the election. In addition, Biden already announced that he would send a delegation to Taiwan to tell them what they can or cannot do.

The salient points to remember before voting.
Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. This is an irrefutable fact. China and Taiwan became separated because of a civil war. This is an internal matter of China. China alone should decide how to reunify with Taiwan.
The people on the island has no right to decide their own future. It has to be decided together with the people on the mainland.
China -Taiwan reunification is an internal matter of China. Foreign powers should stay out of it.
Leading Taiwan to separation and independence is leading it down the path of war.
A vote for the DPP is a vote for war.

@@asainipa lot of eastern countries including china have far greater participation in local level politics who in turn have a much bigger choice in choosing the party leadership than western countries do where it’s all chosen by special interests behind closed doors and if real change is brought by democracy like in 2016 than democracy has to go.
I’m so sick of the hypocrisy of the west where the deeply flawed systems we acknowledge at home as such, are used to put down and meddle with other countries. This is why I left Canada for a country largely based on the Chinese system. It’s nice not having political propaganda shoved down your face 24/7 about obscure minorities as a reason we should hate each other and think we have a choice when every party is run by similar groups of oligarchs. By interfering with yet another great power the west will reap what it sows while the third world rises and industrializes from the ashes of colonialism

@@guanda3312 it’s funny because the humiliation of Germany by the British and French caused world war 2 and the west learned nothing, continuing to try and artificially keep other countries down except this time it’s the Americans. They also said the same thing about crimea after supporting ultra nationalists all over the post ussr causing all these wars in the former Soviet Union. Guess what’s happened from the war in Donbas, the Americans have been humiliated on the world stage because they refused to negotiate and their Ukrainian nato trained vassal has been systematically destroyed, leaving it clear that Russia possesses the top land army in the world.
Western minded people like to compare everything to hitler because not only are they overly propagandized and overly dramatic but also world war 2 is the only historical event they know and they typically don’t even understand it well. First it’s Putin is hitler, then it’s Xi, now we need to hate Kagame and call him hitler. All of these leaders at one point collaborated or tried to collaborate with the west only to have their faces spat in and now are supposedly evil for fighting back against ultranationists who want to undermine their country and in some cases like azov or wazalendo, want to slaughter their own people. But somehow they’re like Hitler for fighting back while the west who arms all these people are supposedly the good guys for defending their “sovereignty”. While why does the west need to be in Taiwan, Ukraine or Congo. It’s also interesting how netenyahu who actually acts like Hitler(living space, actual genocide) enjoys complete western support. Like give me a break I’m so sick of the illiterate politics of the west
