The so called "friendship" is always "strategic" and transactional. NATO will help you in continuing the never-ending war but you cannot join NATO until you prove your worth (there is a significant damage to your country from a long-running war). Even after that there is no guarantee because you might benefit more from NATO than NATO from you/Ukraine after Russia is weakened.

Also, it sounds a bit greedy to only favor the US because they see us as a base to counter China. We need Russia's oil and their longstanding friendship. Balancing our relationships is key, but we shouldn't forget our true allies.
