Hey Doc... I live here in GA too and we just picked up that Mclane 25" Reel mower... I used your affiliate link so hopefully, you get the credit. I have a ton of crabgrass. I think it's from the landscapers we used last year because it's growing in rows along the path of their mowers. Never had a problem before. I've sprayed twice and I used the "rag on a pole" method from your crabgrass vid... but still no luck. Any suggestions for application or products. This stuff is stubborn!

Had the builder install Meyer Zoysia instead of Bermuda when my house was built 15 years ago. Happy I did. Always hated Bermuda in residential lawns. If you don’t cut it more than once a week in growing season, you’ll have to keep cutting it higher and higher as the season progresses to keep from exposing the brown stems. Always hated that about it.

Common Bermuda on sod. Nothing you can do? Pylex or burn it all down with glyphosate. That’s what you can do.

Another tip....once you put down the seed and rake it in, then rent a sod roller and run it over your seed area before you start watering. This will ensure good seed to soil contact. Makes a big difference.

Hey doc. I had to rototill my back yard do to my dogs digging holes and the hard stomping of there feet killed the Bermuda grass. This there a thicker more durable Bermuda I can seed? I put down chicken wire to keep my dogs from digging. Now I just need a grass that can handle there heavy feet running over it. Hope you can help I’m in sunny California if that matters thanks.

Never overseed hybrid Bermuda! Fert, sun, water, it’ll take off. People get scared of fert because they don’t want to cut grass too much, but you have to feed Bermuda and cut it often to keep it weed free and healthy

Hey Doc, I have common Bermuda grass that was already in place when I bought my house. Last year I put down some blackjack seed in a part of my lawn that was bare. Now when the grass is fully grown, you can tell the difference between the 2 grass types. The common is a deep darker green and the blackjack is a brighter green. Would you recommend using common over hybrid in this instance or do I keep putting down a hybrid in the hopes that it will take over the common?

my lawn is hybrid Bermuda from sod (most was laid down years ago and is well established, but I recently laid down about 300 sf of new sod. I subscribe to Scott's lawn care, and this May, for the firs time, they said they'll be sending me Bermuda see for overseeding. But based on your lesson, if they're not sending me the more expensive hybrid seed (which I doubt they will), should I just tell them not to send me the seed?
Also, a few parts of my lawn have Devil grass. I'm now quite concerned that it will eventually take over. How should I kill it? Spray it with an oil and then hit it with Round Up? Then what? I'm planning on using Pro Plugger to get Bermuda to grow there afterwards. I also have a Sun Joe scarifier and dethatcher.

Doc, I have a 1.33 acre lot we built a house on 3 years ago (central Texas). In the front I had Bermuda sod laid, sprinkler system. Just put 4K sq ft of Bermuda in back yard as well. I live in SoCal Desert area of Coachella valley. I have Irrigation, but the seasons are warmer and in the winter we over-seed with Rye, and the Bermuda comes back each spring as the heat kills off the seasonal rye. Planting twice a year, once in Bermuda and once in rye takes a balanced schedule. I want Bermuda year round and want to grow and build my lawn right. Tired of messing around. Not sure what type sod was here, I’ve bought two types and have yet to decide which I should use.... I’m confused. My lawn has lots of weeds. I’m treating with Weedstop first and not sure when I’ should over-seed. Still researching it.

I’ve been doing research and I like palisades zoysia though I’m having a really hard time finding company’s that sell good seed. Trying to locate a medium blade zoysia that doesn’t mind tons of Florida sun and a few hours of shade. Any advice?

If I put premergent down in early March, I also put fescue seed down 2 weeks ago. It doesn't seem to be coming up and the little that is growing is not great. Should I have not put premergent and if so is there any way to get the seed to grow like a liquid soil treatment? Also could it be that it hasn't stayed wet constantly?

Doc, need advice for my land. What options do i have in the south like south Ms for type of grass that will grow constantly and does not require maintenance? We do not have foot traffic, no traffic other than when i mow the yard. Everything i have seen so far basically focuses on small lawns but i have 30 acres of grass areas to maintain and 70 acres of forest that does not require maintenance. I am one of those people who used contractor seed mix from Lowes which has multiple types of grass seed in the bag. The grass is taking off and looks nice but the issue i have here is with land prep for seeds like spikes. I need something 8 to 10ft wide to spike the land due to the amount of land i have and then what is the correct type of seed should i be using?

So not related to over seeding, but a question on newly laid sod and leveling. Here in Texas and my newly laid sod is starting to take hold and green up. However, it’s extremely uneven after the irrigation was installed. Can you top soul/sand the sod and level it? It was laid in December’s but obviously has just recently started to take hold.

    1. When planting seed is it more beneficial to use a drop spreader vs a broadcast spreader, or does it even matter?
    2. When it comes to planting Bermuda seed, what does your watering program look like for new seed? (how many times per day and for what length of time)
