    It seems too good to be true based on the thumbnail, but I'm a new homeowner who installed my own sod in the fall and this summer I dethatched it after the hard winter, applied some fertilizer and water, and got on a good mowing schedule, and my grass is a dense, healthy, deep emerald carpet of Kentucky Bluegrass that looks like something you'd see on HGTV. When I bought my house I eventually sheet mulched away all of the grass and planted a food forest. I then gave away my lawnmower to my brother-in-law who still uses it today.
    What is nice about this approach is that now, in a very small city lot, I grow hundreds of pounds of fruit and vegetables. When I need grass clippings for compost I need only wait until the weekend and my neighbors cut them, bag them up for me, and leave them on the road for me to pick up. They are very nice.
    While they mow their lawns I enjoy watching them work to make half my compost for me.
    I often read a book in the shade of a pear tree and drink tea.
    Before I put in the food forest I wouldn't have been very healthy eating the grass. But now I have about 80 species of edible plants growing every season. This generally costs about 15 hours of work a season between starting plants, planting, and harvest.
    I don't tend to water my garden so I also get savings on the water bill.
    Thanks for the lovely lawns.

    Ryan, thanks- that was very helpful. Planted seed for the first time- used Scott’s EZ seed. It’s coming up nicely and it’s been four days. Question for you: it seems even though I seeded evenly, I may not have used as much seed (lawn is about 150 sq ft and I used one bag in order not to overseed). Should I wait it out or throw some more seed while the grass is still coming and I’m in my first week? I am watering twice a day and it’s a mix of sun and shade with tree cover. Also, If the suggestion is to seed more, use EZ again or get normal seed? Thank you- much appreciated.

    I do lawn care and landscaping in my neighborhood. I burn off dead areas in the yard if it's safe at the time. I put down a thin layer of topsoil in bags. I add my fescue and rye seeds. I sprinkle a little starter fertilizer. I rake it in good. I water the area, then add a layer of pine straw. It doesn't choke the ground as bad as hay straw. That's been working for me in the spring time.

    very interesting to see the way its done in the US.
    back in the day we called this "in seeding" or "seed dressing". hear in the UK we feed / weed ten weeks ahead of time. then we cut down to 3/4inch, dethatch, spared seeds, cut to 1/2 inch and let the cutting go to ground and brush in. then its just water in. job done. also go over on seed by 50%. liquid sea weed is always the best on new grass.

    After throwing on the starter fertilizer would you throw on some type of dirt or soil or would you just water it?

      If u have obvious bare spots of no grass throughout your yard then it would definitely benefit u to go around and top dress those areas with soil first before u seed. It would also help to seed those areas by hand that way u can put it on a little thicker than the spreader.

    • @SalGuelphON

      I did this by digging about 3 inches throughout my yard and then mixing triple mix with a rake and then seeding followed by some more triple mix- so far so good.

    • @RickWilliamscrm
      @RickWilliamscrm 3 роки тому

      @@johnp82 It improves the soil. It's like priming a wall before you paint it. Great for the existing lawn as well. The holes allow the moister to get into the roots.

      @@RickWilliamscrm no I know the benefit of aeration but I don't think it will improve germination of grass seed.

    • @RickWilliamscrm
      @RickWilliamscrm 3 роки тому

      @@johnp82 The seed needs moister to germinate, aeration increases the soils moister. That's the best answer I got. It's also how Tru-Green does it. If I was doing bare spots, I'd rake them out put down new dirt and buy a patching product that has seed, fertilizer and some density to hold it down. Water it twice a day when it doesn't rain.

    One thing I will do since I only have a riding tractor is to use an articulating hedge trimmer to cut my new grass so I don't end up putting too much weight on the yard
    I know smaller mowers are not as expensive but you gotta convince the wife that I don't need a secondary mower

      Plug aerators for sure! Water about 2 days before and then aerate. You'll get good results and pull about 2 1/2- 3 inch cores with no problem
